Watch McConnell on CNN's State of the Union.

(CNN) - Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell Sunday stopped short of calling on embattled Illinois Sen. Roland Burris to resign, saying he'll follow the recommendation of the Senate Ethics Committee.

"I think the Ethics Committee can work," the Kentucky Republican told CNN's John King on State of the Union. "I think in this particular instance, it ought to work quickly, and resolve these differences and make a recommendation to the full Senate."

News surfaced last week that Burris had spoken with impeached Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich's brother on more than one occasion about the possibility of raising money for the former governor before being appointed to his Senate seat.

The Senate Ethics Committee has launched a preliminary investigation into the matter.

Sadly, Burris was connected to "Blago the Crook" ....... sorry Burris, you must resign!

Mary   February 22nd, 2009 3:21 pm ET

Let Mitch support the investigation of the Bush Administration. Mitch please call for that investigation. I feel Burris should resign and deal with his legal issues.

John from California   February 22nd, 2009 3:17 pm ET

I would like to call on Senator McConnell to join with Senator Burris in a joint resignation.

We need to start talking about the first $350 Billion that Bush and his friends distrubuted among themselves than the resignation of sen. Burris. We (American) need to know where is the money?

Burris needs to go – you could read slime ball from the moment Burris accepted the appointment by El Blago; any ethical person would have immediately refused the appointment by another slime ball.

Mel of Alexandria, Virginia   February 22nd, 2009 2:58 pm ET

Indeed Burris should resign, but a hypocrite like McConnell would be like the pot calling the kettle black.

Chris   February 22nd, 2009 2:45 pm ET

Funny how this man and others played the race card to get him into office. You sure don't hear them now do you? No, but they sure can play that card whenever it's to their convenience. This too will end, I'm sure, as Obama works towards that very end. Hold everyone acccountable, Mr. President, even those of your colors -- white or black!

Hey Bruce! Politicians want gun control because they are afraid of insurrection? I just read this morning about an 11 year old child allegedly murdering a pregnant woman in her bed. He used a 20 gauge shotgun specifically designed for children. There is no legal requirement that these weapons even be registered.

Does your interpretation of the 2nd Amendment's well-armed malitia include children? Like the well armed malitia some are using in parts of Africa?

If your children have access to firearms, I hope you are behaving to their satisfaction.

I for one am much more worried about armed children than I am with armed overthrow of the government.

I find it unfortunate that every sentence coming out is always bias at all times! Having the guts to say that he hopes this government facing the deficit will sober up...well who have been drinking out of control for the past eight years! They are still looking for their voice and currently their voice uses the same rhetoric...notice I have not put any adjectives to this rhetoric since by default any adjectives can also be said about any opponent...and at this time the voice needed is the voice that unites citizens while using common sense values to get out of this mess and to not be afraid to prepare and face the future together...I guess that is why people voted for President Obama and that is why they still have tremendous confidence in their President!

I am a liberal Democrat who voted for Obama. I do not want anyone sullying the ethics of this party, and if they do, they need to be gone from our party. The Democrats have fought too long and too hard to be in the position of power we are today to let one man's selfish ambitions to cause us to be in question.

Burris passed himself off as having been beyond reproach in a situation that demanded the appointee as being above reproach. He lied. He was involved with Blago's office, and therefore dirty, though he denies the obvious. He should be asked to step down; if he doesn't, he should be forced to do so.

If Burris remains, the Democrats will again begin to take on the patina of a corrupt party, and those who do not support our president will begin to call out the 'race card' against those in the administration.

I would want a brave Democrat in the senate to ask Senator Shelby from Alabama to provide a copy of his birth certificate(just like President Obama did) to prove he is a US citizen.
If he can't do that his mental capacity should be examined closely to see if he is fit to serve in the senate. Because he sure prove himself a moron by questioning President Obama's birth eligibility even though all this had been debunked by his birth certificate.

Proud American   February 22nd, 2009 1:36 pm ET

regardless of burress (who shouldn't have been appointed in the first place)..Let me tell you about Mitch McConnell:

The folks in KY once trusted him but now they hate him because he is a proven hypocrite. He will lose his seat to a Democrat in the next election because no one trusts him anymore and KY is really suffering economically. They are angry because he is against the stimulus bill.

He's lost his power.

S Callahan   February 22nd, 2009 1:34 pm ET

Acctually it's not a 'balls' issue.....the Ethics committee is designed for this purpose. It's good to see those in Washington are 'finally' using it...perhaps this will be the beginning of 'cleaning' up Washington.

I never thought I'd say it, but I wish that my man McConnell would resign. He and Cantor are killing our party. Liberals are gonna come up with hundreds of acronyms for GOP. Go On Pals, get lost. That's mine. I wish we had better representation than these two fools.

Tom   February 22nd, 2009 1:17 pm ET

I think that Burris should just go to work in the Senate. If telling a little fib (or not speaking carefully enough) was enough to disqualify from the Senate, the place would be half empty. e.g. Ted Kennedy, John Kerry. Burris may actually be an ethical politician (oxymoronic, I know), who can do a little good for Illinois before he gets stomped in the next election.

Simmy   February 22nd, 2009 1:15 pm ET

Seadog,

I'm a Democrat, but I totally agree with you on this. When they fought him for his Seat, I knew he would win because the Law was on his side. This time, I'm not so sure. This time he's dealing with shrewd and unscrupulous politicians; each party having a different agenda, but both agreeing when it comes to kicking him out. This is politics at its worst. I hope he prevails. If he doesn't, he'll still be a decent and honorable man. So sad.
**********************************************************************
Andy,
Bush and Cheney lied about the WAR. Cheney encouraged his chief of staff, Libbey, to lie for him. Please stop the drama. You want corrupt politicians to leave Washington? Are you saying that the Congress should be shut down? You do realize that most of the fight against President Obama is rooted in corruption? Do you understand that there are politicians fighting behind closed doors against change? Wake up poor misinformed soul.

valwayne   February 22nd, 2009 1:13 pm ET

The ethics process can work? Has it worked with Congressman Rangel, or Barney Frank, or Murtha? Has it worked with Sen Dodd? Why is it such a crime for Sen Burris to have forgotten about a few embarassing conversations than for Harry Reid to stick in an $8 billion gamblers train from L.A. to Las Vegas at the last minute before anybody could read the spending bill. The Democrats are neck deep in corruption right now. If it makes them feel better to drive a new African American Senator from the Senate in an attempt to burnish their image go ahead....but nobody is going to think you've touched the real corruption!

VON BISMARK,Vienna.   February 22nd, 2009 1:09 pm ET

bankrupt   February 22nd, 2009 1:01 pm ET

Of course McConnell didnt call for Burris to resign....McConnell wants this thing dragged out until 2010 so that a Republican can pick up the seat, in 2010 or a special election before then. VERY TRANSPARENT. In the meantime, all McConnell is doing by not resigning himself is turning the Senate into the world's most expensive nursing home, with a little help from Byrd, Kennedy, Spector and Bunning.

Tom in Atlanta   February 22nd, 2009 1:00 pm ET

Of course he stops short of asking Burris to resign. He wants a weak democratic candidate who is a joke for the IL 2010 election cycle.

Mitch Mcconnel wants to see the country BURN rather than have Democrats in power.

C.S.A republicans   February 22nd, 2009 12:49 pm ET

Old turtlehead should retire. You would think telling endless lies would get boring after a while.

Seadog   February 22nd, 2009 12:47 pm ET

I'm a republican and have no ties to IL, but I think both parties are out to hang this old man, for no good reason. Senator Burris, unlike most from Chicago has never been involved in any sort of scandal so far as I know.

The democrats want him out for fear he will not be re-elected in 2010. The republicans want him out so they will have a chance in a special election.

There are folks far more corrupt than Senator Burris such as: Hastings from Florida; Frank, Dodd, Murtha and a host of others who have been caught with their fingers in the cookie jar.

Let the man alone! I see nothing that indicates he will perform badly as a senator . . . and much better than most in both parties. Why? Well, far as I can see he has no axe to grind and is not overly partisan.

Linda in MS   February 22nd, 2009 12:47 pm ET

Ummm, Bruce, I really don't think we're talking about accidental shootings, my man. Gun control is all about keeping guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them, like criminals, who buy them on the black market, unregistered. I have a wonderful nephew, former militay, now in law enforcement, and I hate the thought that he is up against violent criminals with more fire power than he's got.

Steve   February 22nd, 2009 12:42 pm ET

Mitch! Remember Napoleon's dictum that when your enemy is destroying himself, stay out the way! Illinois Democrats like myself (and I imagine that also includes the President) want Burris out . If Mitch, Boehner, Cantor and the other loud mouths of the Rep Party start bashing Burris, Democrats will push back. Burris has a big mouth and ego. Learn to controls yours, Mitch.

Steve in Las Vegas,NV   February 22nd, 2009 12:36 pm ET

Bruce February 22nd, 2009 10:55 am ET

AND ANOTHER THING!!! These corrupt politicians want GUN Control because they are afraid maybe the citizenry will finally raise up against our OWN government…NOT because it will do anything for crime. Less than 2000 people died from accidental gunshootings in the home last year nationally. How many died from Drunk Driving? How many died at the negligent hands of Physicians!? THOUSANDS more. ALL of Washington D.C. is becoming Corrupt and Crooked, and the States are following suite. Why Not? If National Politicians can double their personal net worth in one single term, why can't State Politicians?
------------------

You are right about the gun control part. The control part is POWER.
Control over the people, but all that does is to protect criminals from armed citizens. After all, all these budget cuts means police officers being laid off. And yes, a lot more people have died from drunk drivers than guns, but they won't try to ban alcohol. Tried that and it failed.

And yes indeed DC is the city of corrupt and crooked politicians, and most should not be there but they decieve the voters at election and a lot focus on getting re elected and doing the bidding of special interests & lobbyists.

Big J   February 22nd, 2009 12:28 pm ET

As a 'bleeding heart liberal' I believe Sen. Burris (sic) is a trainwreck.

The Black Congressional Caucus should be more than embarrassed, they should be ashamed, by their initial support of this man. Obviously, he was more concerned with what he could engrave on his mausoleum than with the integrity it would have taken to turn down the offer. And, just as obviously the BCC was more concerned with the color of his skin than his integrity.

Durbin, who has made a career of just 'going along'...Daley of Chicago, who, try as he may, will never be anymore than a pimple on his fathers' behind....and now, even from the opposing party opposing Burris resignation....is it no more of a crime for a weasel like Burris to offer to pay for the seat than it was for our now former, and soon to be Bubba's cell mate, to offer to SELL the seat? and..AND..if for nothing else...he should resign 'cause of just plain stupidity (a trait shared by members of both parties...I mean...quite aside of his own lifelong desire and campaign to be appointed, he really ought to have know that ANYONE Blogoeovich appointed would probably be suspected of offering to BUY the seat is some way shape or form...hell...Burris even admitted that he had hundreds of people soliciting the seat for him. Anyone who believes that Burris didn't solicit that seat should him/herself become a professional fence straddling politician themselves!

This poor dumb political hack is being hounded out of office by other poor dumb hacks with even greater undue haste than in Blago's case. I hope Burris doesn't resign, stops talking to the press, and gets some better lawyers than he's had who can preserve the "due process of law" to which he is entitled. Everyone is a judge and jury and has jumped to conclusions without knowing the facts, which can be known _only_ after notice of the charges and a full opportunity to be heard on them

Terry - California   February 22nd, 2009 11:49 am ET

The best way to address all of the "corrupt gamesmanship" in State and National Politics is to install Term Limits. The Founders never intended that politicians make elected office a career. I vote to send all Members of the Senate home after two terms, and all Members of Congress home after four terms. Political Corruption is caused by too many promises, to far too many people, who are not interested in the well being of the country, only the well being of their wallet. I believe that any housewife, who manages the household budget, could quickly understand how corrupt Washington is, and she would quickly install "Time Out".

The criticism of Barack Obama's administration, to this point, is unprecedented in American political history. They have certainly done a better job than with Bush in his first hundred days which they all slept through, not to mention the unlawful declaration of war against Iraq and the subsequent patriot act, that none of them read.
Still, if you don't think Barack Obama is criticized much then tune your television set to Fox News . . . their business is ignorance and business is always booming.

Roland Burris hungered for more than anything else in his empty,
pathetic, uneventful life to be a famous politician, lusted after it his
entire unnoteworthy career. Craved that the media would follow him
around, clamoring after his every word and movement. Dreamed of
being in all the newspapers and on all the tv news and talk shows.

Now he is, and they are.

Funny how things work out, ain't it...

When are the people of america going to WAKE UP and do something about politicians who think LIEING is normal? Wrong is Right, Sex ISN'T Sex....Kickbacks aren't REALLY bribes....The politicians of this country are no longer idealists. They use political office for their personal gain. Democrats OR Republicans....We have ONE more choice than Communist Russia Did. Whoopee!

my   February 22nd, 2009 10:48 am ET

Burris made a racist comment. This is the truth. If he would be white he would be yelled on from all sides. The fairness had to be for all. Not only one race.
Like with that cartoon.
What if all blondes would demand all the cartoonists who did cartoons about blondes to be fired. Or jews, or muslims, or whoever...?
I agree that the cartoon was strong, but this is country of free speech...or it is not? Where are the limits?
I think the limits should be determined -somehow....
the cartoonist should not be fired, just reminded of the limits, and given chance....
I personally am not a fan of these cartoons, I hate making fun of people, but it exists, people laugh, only the limits are needed. Fair limits.

Have a good look, ladies and gentleman of America. the State of Sleaze, and its corporate mouthpiece, are calling for a good politician, to step down, because of honest mistakes and oversight and without due process. The State of Sleaze, with its puppets in place, and others, seeing an opportunity to move ahead, have no qualms about their malevolence, but they sure know how to whip up the mob !! There is no stopping the sleaze oozing across state borders, tainting others, as it spreads across the land, all in the name of infotainment, yellow journalism and character assassination !! Even bringing in a man's family's final resting place, to be used against him, hoping to prove how unworthy he is !! Can you stoop any lower than that ? Only, worms and maggots and some in the State of Sleaze, are able to find solace at such decomposing levels !!
" Constitution ? We don't need no stinking Constitution !! We can railroad anybody we want, including you !!" NEWS RELEASE FROM THE STATE OF SLEAZE.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

let the people of IL boot this guy out of office, as they are the only ones who have the real right to do so. and let the people of IL make the choice of who will represent them, which is also their right.

End Of An Error   February 22nd, 2009 10:37 am ET

Burris paid to play. He needs to either resign or be removed. Race does not in any way enter into this. Anyone who pays to play needs to be removed from office and those who sell influence need to face the courts for influence peddling and in this case, since it involves a Senate seat, treason.

Texas Proud!   February 22nd, 2009 10:33 am ET

Burris needs to go!!!!!!!!!!!
