Media critic blasts Chris Matthews' 'man crush' on Obama

CNN

Goldberg takes issue with media coverage of President Obama.

(CNN) - It has become one of MSNBC host Chris Matthew's most infamous lines of the 2008 presidential election:

"I felt this thrill going up my leg," Matthews said the night Obama resoundingly defeated rival Hillary Clinton in the Virginia and Maryland Democratic primaries.

And former CBS News Correspondent Bernard Goldberg, who has long alleged liberal bias in the media, highlighted that line as indicative of the media's "slobbering" press coverage of candidate Obama during his campaign for the White House.

"That's not commentary, that's a man-crush," Goldberg declared on CNN's Reliable Sources Sunday.

Goldberg, the author of the new book “A Slobbering Love Affair,” credits the media coverage of the 2008 presidential election for ultimately resulting in Barack Obama's victory.

He specifically faulted coverage of the prolonged Democratic primary campaign, during which two historic candidates contentiously squared off.

"I think in elite liberal circles, certainly inside the media, race trumps gender, and that's why they slobbered over Barack Obama, and took Hillary Clinton to the back room and beat her with a rubber hose,” Goldberg said.

Goldberg also faulted political journalists for not digging up controversial sermons of the president's longtime pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, until Obama had already effectively captured his party's nomination.

"These tapes were available, you didn't have to be Woodward or Bernstein to dig them up," Goldberg said. "If those tapes had come out six months earlier, certainly a year earlier, I don't think Barack Obama would have been the nominee.

"I think Hillary Clinton would have been. And I think she would have been the president today," he continued. "And in that sense, she's the biggest loser in all of this."

    LARRY:

Talk about needing to get a job, life, or a basic grip on reality. Unemployment hits Democrats as much as Republician. To imply that being liberal means being unemployed is simply laughable.

Additionally, I am not sure who you are referring to when you use a term like "Tards" but I suspect that it is further evidence of your place in an otherwise civilized society.

Either the name Larry is riddled with severe problems that all who share your name must spew here or every time you post (quite frequently) you spew hatred. Get some help. I am sure there is a highly qualified mental facility prepared to handle your case.

No, I disagree completely with your premise. The 'media' reported their genuine delight that finally, they had a candidate who spoke well, and got his message of change across. George Bush and his buddies destroyed not only America, but really made a insane mess in Iraq

All I have to say is I'm ready for the honeymoon to be over with Obama. Does anyone realize we are borrowing to pay off debt with the whole stimulus plan? You want to create jobs and get people to buy things in the local economy. PUT MONEY DIRECTLY INTO THEIR POCKETS! How do you accomplish this? TAX CUTS! But the media has greenlit this whole stimulus package because their savior Obama says it will work. He is going to push us into a Socialist society. I didn't serve in our Army to be part of that. The media, be it FOX or CNN has done nothing to show who Obama is. He is a gun hating, socialist who wants nothing more than to get every American on some sort of welfare. Control the people control the country. Wise up.

'Vote Republican because someone has to work'

    Bernie Goldberg,
You nailed this one. The love affair is ridiculous. I think it's cute how others deny any liberal bias exists in the mainstream news. The ONLY balanced network is FoxNews and the liberals can't stand someone standing up to their system.
Congratulations on the success of your book! I'm buying one this week.

Neither CNN or any other News organization should be intimidated by this kind of commentary. In my humble view, the press has generally been quite tough on this very new administration. What happened to the traditional "honeymoon" period? Does this President not have the right to try to solve the many problems that he has inherited with the support of the people? Is it not enough that the press reports the facts as they find them as oppose to just being critical to sell papers and make ratings? We are all in a very tough period here. We need the best chance possible at solving these problems. We need the press as well as all three branches of government to help with this - not just be critical. The do nothing critics on the right and the left show how easy it is to just be critical. We need well researched facts and clarifications from the press, not just interviews with other newspeople and professional commentators with various points of view. That does not help anyone. It does not inform, it just "stirs the pot", which may help ratings, but does not inform the popular discourse.

Where's the bias? Matthews had a "man crush" on Fred Thompson too.

You'd think Bernie GOLDBERG would be more cautious about throwing around new world order-type conspiracy theories. What a crackpot. He only serves to validate the Ann Coulter theory of success: you can make millions by writing crazy books that feed into the fears and hatreds of mindless reactionaries. Goldberg and his ilk make me worry deeply about this country.

That this piece begins by focusing on Matthews seems strange to me. I have always thought of Matthews as a straightforward pundit, not as a news anchor bound by the standards of unbiased reporting.

If one wants to argue that the media coverage of Obama was biased, one should target those who aren't paid to express their opinions.

'Tis better to keep your mouth shut and have people"think" you are a serious idiot then to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Goldberg was fired for dishonesty. Where's his journalistic integrity? He is just another loud mouth schrill for the right wing losers who have brought so much destruction to our nation and who are so adapt at pointing out the shortcomings of others but fail to see their own.

Rush has a man crush on Bush, and the media did not car then, so why now?

Mattews was a huge Bill Clinton hater too, and the media did not care then either.

Bernie Goldberg's a bitter old conservative who can' t come to grips that the Dems won big this year. He fails to mention that Fox "News" is the most biased news organization on the planet (in a close race with Al-Jazeera) that carries the water for the Republican party. His opinion is useless.

Do any of you Democrats even read the entire article before you start bashing on the Republicans? He isn't saying that the Republicans would have won, he is saying that Clinton would have won.

Thats the problem in this country. Nobody listens to the whole story and THEN makes an opinion. They immediately jump the other side the first chance they get.

Get with it people. If any of you want this country to get any better you better start working together or at least get along.

    Mr. Goldberg,

My 16 year old daughter went to the book store the other day and picked up your book. When she's done reading it I'll pick it up and read it. Until then, I'll keep my opinions to myself, unlike some of these other folks that are dumping on you before they even read the book. I'm sure they'll say they read the book, but somehow I doubt it.

With that being said, something tells me I will certainly enjoy your book.
