Media critic blasts Chris Matthews' 'man crush' on Obama

CNN

Goldberg takes issue with media coverage of President Obama.

(CNN) - It has become one of MSNBC host Chris Matthew's most infamous lines of the 2008 presidential election:

"I felt this thrill going up my leg," Matthews said the night Obama resoundingly defeated rival Hillary Clinton in the Virginia and Maryland Democratic primaries.

And former CBS News Correspondent Bernard Goldberg, who has long alleged liberal bias in the media, highlighted that line as indicative of the media's "slobbering" press coverage of candidate Obama during his campaign for the White House.

"That's not commentary, that's a man-crush," Goldberg declared on CNN's Reliable Sources Sunday.

Goldberg, the author of the new book “A Slobbering Love Affair,” credits the media coverage of the 2008 presidential election for ultimately resulting in Barack Obama's victory.

He specifically faulted coverage of the prolonged Democratic primary campaign, during which two historic candidates contentiously squared off.

"I think in elite liberal circles, certainly inside the media, race trumps gender, and that's why they slobbered over Barack Obama, and took Hillary Clinton to the back room and beat her with a rubber hose,” Goldberg said.

Goldberg also faulted political journalists for not digging up controversial sermons of the president's longtime pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, until Obama had already effectively captured his party's nomination.

"These tapes were available, you didn't have to be Woodward or Bernstein to dig them up," Goldberg said. "If those tapes had come out six months earlier, certainly a year earlier, I don't think Barack Obama would have been the nominee.

"I think Hillary Clinton would have been. And I think she would have been the president today," he continued. "And in that sense, she's the biggest loser in all of this."

Goldberg is a Bill O'Reilly in making. He does good coverage for REAL Sports. However, he is a moron when it comes to political/news coverage. He is always complaining. Why FOX News does not give him a gig and be done with it?

ummm, maybe the "fairness doctrine" is needed, but then again nobody really watchs MSNBC because they don't show both sides of the issue.

Say what you want about Fox News, at least they bring people on everyone of their shows who has an opposing view point. The same can not be said for the rest of the media.

Obama won because he had the best message and the least baggage. Clinton simply had too much baggage.Gender could have just as easily trumped race if he was the one with the baggage.

Chris Matthews is forthright and honest about his feelings, unlike many anchors with a hidden agenda. Chris doesn't come across as being "in the tank" for anyone, but rather in being drawn to a candidate based on that candidate's appeal. Is it any better that other anchors get their talking points from the higher-ups, and that their agenda and bias comes from a higher source?

Republicans had better watch out. The so-called "liberal elite" and left-wingers are becoming mainstream. Right-wing conservatives are losing face, and being seen increasingly as extremist and out-of-touch in their views. They will simply continue to lose face until they are a thin, angry, minority, a party of conniving extremists plotting to regain control. How ugly!

Goldberg should have never quit wrestling. Politics are boring and the WWE is exciting. The only good thing is that Goldberg is still speaking his mind. My question is WHO'S NEXT....................

Cheney rigged votes in Florida? Wow, WEll i guess that just gets down to the point here...Media bias is strong and people like this will believe whatever you tell them..Im sure the thousands who follow Hardball, and don't "get thrills up their leg" everytime Obama speaks, probably think there is something seriously wrong with them. You know, Chris Matthews said it so it must be true. CNN is the most reasonable news station, post election. I think Fox News was the most fair during the election.

Bush won the election with 52% and the libs call it a narrow margin.
Obama won by 53% and they call it a landside. Huh? go figure.
Obama won for one reason and we all know what it was. Now we can all go broke and still think he's the greatest.
some people are as delusional now as they were in Nov. Maybe they should start spending there 10$ a week rebate on milk instead of kool aid.

What's with goldberg's obsession over Chris Mathews' comment!? Do I detect jealousy as a root cause of his unecessary criticisms??

Goldberg, come out of that closet right now.

I see the Dem's are still crying about how Bush "stole" the election in 2008. It's ancient history, get over it.

    Like my bumper sticker says.

Palin '12 Change you will be begging for.

Unfortunately, by then the damage will be done and our great grandchildren will still be dealing with the cost.

I am really appalled at some of the comments regarding race and sex in this blog, including Goldberg himself. Obama was not elected president because he was black. It was because the other option was a guy who had let his campaign completely slip out of his control in front of the entire nation and a person (male or female doesn't matter) who was incapable of answering basic questions. Yes Joe some times mouths off out of turn, but he is not an idiot and he is aware of world issues. If we are going to break down the love affair into it's basic features, it's because Obama was charismatic, intelligent, organized, calm (in a sea of chaos) and collected at all times during his campaign. (with regards to Hillary, there are a whole slew of reasons outside of race & gender to discuss there).

It's not about jungle fever you idiots, it's about human appeal. You didn't see people running to elect Jesse Jackson or the plethora of other black politicians out there. It's not about race or gender, unless you're an absolute idiot. The few people that liked Obama b/c he is black probably balanced out the same number of people who didn't like him because he was black. Which means, it was left to the rest of us to actually make an intelligent decision.

This point of view is so sophomoric that I’m surprised every time it's bought up again. The Obama story was FAR more interesting for historic reasons as well as the way in which his campaign was run. None of it was like anything we'd seen before. That makes it news! News, get it! And if you're in the business of news you're likely to be a little more successful if you run with the stories that are MORE interesting! See, it's not that complicated.
Look, you can like Obama or not. That’s fine. But, sweet mother of God, can we please move beyond this part of the debate? Please?...

Excuses, excuses. America as we knew it is forever changed, and that is a very good thing. I love watching the coverage because I know all the negative talk, voting against the stimilus package, etc...all of it , is based on fear. Greed is no longer the prevailing force. Those days are over.

Larry, when you calm down, grow up and stop name calling, remember this: Your use of the term "tards" is ignorant, insulting and very hateful to the families and individuals who cope with special challenges.

In particular, your hero, Sarah Palin. How do you think she feels about your cruel and infantile expression?

Am sick and tired of this so call liberal bias if that were true how come the U.S has had more republican presidents than liberal ones? How come George W. Bush was elected twice? If the liberal media was so good a their job of brainwashing the american people into electing their president than you would think more liberals would have become presidents by now. Wouldn't you? The truth is that as the saying goes "the media is the culture" meaning that people wanted change and the media was just reflecting that change!

Why didn't Goldberg dig up all this dirt on Obama back then? He blames "the media", but isn't he part of it? The Jeremiah Wright story was a red herring then, as it is now, so maybe that's why it wasn't so vigorously pursued.

The "liberal" media is NOT the reason that Barack Obama was elected by an electoral landslide. If you want to "blame" someone, blame George W. Bush. GWB was an absolute DISASTER of a "President!"

It was GWB's incompetence and stupidity, as well as the unethical and corrupt practices of his administration, that was responsible for the election of Barack Obama.

Now, really, what do you expect coming from Bernie Goldberg?

He's a real masochist and probably a misogynist as well.

I happen to think Chirs Matthews deserves kudos for showing his real feelings on the air.

Did this guy not notice that millions of citizens were also enthralled with Obama's charisma and ideas? Is that somehow also illegitimate? Perhaps Obama is a historical and inspiring figure who warranted and continues to warrant our attention and good will. Stuff a sock in it Goldberg, and all your fellow negative neanderthals. You don't get it and you never will.
