Bunning apologizes for Ginsburg comments

Sen. Jim Bunning issued a statement Monday about his recent comments on Justice Ginsburg's health.
Sen. Jim Bunning issued a statement Monday about his recent comments on Justice Ginsburg's health.

(CNN) – Sen. Jim Bunning apologized Monday for recent comments that suggested Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg would be dead within a year.

In remarks at a Hardin County Republican Party dinner, the Courier-Journal newspaper reported the Kentucky senator said that pancreatic cancer is "bad cancer. The kind you don't get better from," and that the longest most patients live is nine months after diagnosis, even with surgery.

Bunning - who said he plans to seek re-election next year for a third term - also said he supports conservative judges, and that's going to be an issue very shortly because "Ruth Bader Ginsburg ... has cancer."

“I apologize if my comments offended Justice Ginsberg (sic),” Bunning in a short statement released Monday. “That certainly was not my intent. It is great to see her back at the Supreme Court today and I hope she recovers quickly. My thoughts and prayers are with her and her family.”

The Supreme Court announced earlier this month that Ginsburg, the only woman sitting on the high Court, had undergone surgery for pancreatic cancer. She returned to the Court Monday without fanfare and joined her male colleagues in hearing oral arguments.

The health of some members of the nine-member court has been a political topic in recent years. Ginsburg's recent cancer diagnosis has renewed speculation President Obama might soon have an opportunity to name perhaps several justices.

Update 4:24 p.m.: Neither Ginsburg's chambers nor the court had a reaction to Bunning's apology Monday afternoon.

She's too old to be a Supreme Court Justice. She almost looks senile in the picture.

What Bunning expressed was his 'Gut Feeling' about Justice Ginsburg's health. Republicans like him have a tendency to put their feet in their mouths only to turn around and apologize. Sadly, your true nature is already out and we will mark you to the ballot box come 2010.

why not, that is just total lack of knowing what is correct and a politician should know

If we can't say nappy headed hoes or put monkey's in pictures on newspapers, than he can't predict justice's death

Senator Bunning is factually correct regarding pancreatic cancer. He has no reason to apologize for speaking truthfully.

Gives you a pretty good insight on how a repub think's.That's simply a sick remark. They do not have any reguard for human life as long as they can gain from a situation or think they can gain.Sounds like the hate continues to spill from the repub's.

Bunning giving a prognosis without an MD degree is just like Frist diagnosing someone by watching a video that was done 8 years prior. Please let me diagnose the GOP...DOA!!!!

Sen. Bunning, I'm glad that you apologized, but please get a hold of yourself. Your party is already on a downward slope; comments like yours only speed up the process. Who knows; she may out-live you.

Just keep it up repugs. We need your ineptness to help us win in 2010 and 2012. At this rate the Dems should have an easy time of it. Never seen so many stupid people as the repugs have become. Never, never vote republican; they want to see America fail.

But... Bunning's comments were insensitive and he's being disingenous. He was attempting to score political points and secure his base. Nothing works better for the GOP base than talking about liberal activist judges. Bunning knows this. He knew what he was saying. Can't cover up his intentions or motives. No Orwelian-inspired thought police force is required to figure out what's on this guys' mind. He made that crystal clear – i.e. Obama will be appointing a new SCOTUS justice soon, and time to prepare to fight for conservative values, etc... We all know the rest.

Merciful heavens. How anyone could blame Senator Bunning's thoughtless comment on President Obama is a mystery to me.

And I'll be you a hundred bucks that "Typical White Person" could not off-the-cuff name three important U.S. Supreme Court decisions except for Roe v Wade.

Senator Bunning still thanks the GOP is still running things on Capital Hill, Executive branch too, Does he remember the 2006 and 2008 election. Keep talking and in 2010 the GOP will be even a smaller party. Please who cares what the GOP thinks anyway. I hope Senator Bunning looses his Senate race.
