Mayors want full access to stimulus

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) - The U.S. Conference of Mayors said Monday in a letter to President Barack Obama it's concerned that several Republican governors have said they plan to turn down a portion of what's offered in the $787 billion stimulus package.

"Mayors know, better than anyone, that there are families suffering because of the recession in every state of this great nation," said the letter, signed by Manny Diaz, mayor of Miami and president of the group.

"As a nation, we cannot allow our citizens and communities to needlessly suffer when assistance is available to help them survive and rebuild in these troubling times," the letter said.

The conference asked Obama's administration to devise a system that allows cities to have access to all the programs in the bill, even if an governor chooses to reject it.

Of course they do, so many cities are in serious trouble. The mayors can have the money that the GOP governors do not want!

What's very amusing is that when the Stimulus helps the economy and we return to prosperity the GOP will attempt to spin things to make it look as if they were helpful & bipartisan........ BUT....... we, the People, have been watching closely and..........NO...... the GOP ONLY OBSTRUCTED.

It will be interesting to see if the people suffering in those states stick with what got them where they are today, or will they step in a new direction and vote for change with a Democrat......Republicans vote for the Party and NOT the American people.

Let voters suffer enough and they'll look for change what they have.

Republicans vote for the Party. Party first, American people second/third.

Give it to the Mayors and Counties. They know where to put it and who needs it most. The state governments would serve it like Political Plums and who needs that. Go Big Daddy O!

Would governors play politics while the local officials know their cities are suffering?

Can anyone say Mark Sanford? great story on the wire last weekend about South Carolina having the 3rd highest unemployment in the country (and may reach 14% by the summer) threatening to turn down the money "on principle" while local officials in his state are screaming that they need it.

These Governers are not hurting, there is NO recession until it hits them personally and none of them are hurting from this bad economy, only the people they are suppose to represent are the ones hurting, and they can stand in front of the TV cameras and make the decission not to take certain parts of this Stimulus that will help the people of their state just because of their political standings..........because they are afraid that if the plans fails they won't be hurt politicialy......but to heck with all the rest of you people out there , they don't care how it hurts you........kick them out of office now........because this stimulus is going to work......I hope and pray that it does, not because I want the credit to go to President Obama but because I care about this country and the people who are suffering now..........about the buisness big and small......come on people don't you want this country to survive? Forget about whether you won or lost in this election.........we all go down if this fails........

Smart move! Yes, let Mayor of their city take charge and we don't have to worry about the evil Repulcians governors tuning it down becasue they have their eye on 2012.

Great idea! I'd like to see money go directly to the cities instead of through the governors' offices especially since some of these prima donna governors want to turn it down. Apparently some of them have no regard for anyone but their rich contributors. Giving the money directly to the cities could certainly cut down on red tape and administrative expenses.
Also I just read an article that says we are giving $30 billion in arms to Israel to help them kill Muslims. They're a strong enough nation that they should be able to pay for their own arms. Think how many people in America that money could help! I'm not anti-Israel, but I was thoroughly disgusted by their invasion of Gaza.

If you don't want it don't take it... Who cares!

Any governor that takes stimulus funding without considering the consequences is not living up to his/her oath of office. That means the impact of an entitlement that comes with 24 month funding has to be considered, and if the state budget can't handle it then you can't take it.

I hope these states Governers who are thinking about not taking the money are thinking about the people and not their pride. Then again this would be a true test to see if the plan works, because if it doesn't work then the states that don't take the money should recover sooner than the states that do.

Just a few questions-– What were these Mayors and Governors doing with the money when times were good? Aren't they supposed to be more fiscally responsible than the rest of us? Why are they all BROKE now? Hmmmmmm

I think it is a shame that the Republicians are strangling thier constitutients by not accepting the funds that are geared to help the people of their States by playing POLITICS with peoples lives and lively hood. The folks in those STATES should start a RECALL of the Governors who are only looking looking out for themselves and not the folks who voted for them. The people in this America should now look very hard at who they put in office to represent them.
Those Governors should be outed. They need to loose their jobs.WAKE UP PEOPLE. FIRE ALL THOSE GOVERNORS NOW>

It would seriously APPEAR that the hundreds of Mayors across this country show more INTELLIGENCE and INTEGRITY than the Governor's governing these states threatening to "oppose" billions in stimulus money!

WHO IN THE HELL TURNS DOWN BILLIONS IN DOLLARS? Unless you are Bill Gates, Warren Buffet or Oprah Winfrey...... WHAT IDIOT turns down billions?

Republicans are proving over and over again, it's NEVER been "country first"....its THEM, THEM, THEM FIRST!!!
