(CNN) – Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is lending a financial hand to a group of House Republicans who have become targets of a new Democratic campaign over their opposition to the $787 billion stimulus bill.
In recorded telephone messages, text messages, and e-mails set to be sent out this week, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee plans to highlight the opposition of 12 House Republicans to stimulus package.
“What Republicans wanted was a bill to strengthen the economy,” Romney said in a statement announcing the $1000 donations by his Free and Strong America PAC. “What the Democrats passed was a bill to stimulate government. We are committed to helping these courageous Republicans defend their position and fend off political attacks.”
The “Undaunted Dozen,” as Romney calls them, “[stood] up for fiscal responsibility and [said] no to spending abuse.”
Although the former GOP presidential hopeful referred to the dozen members targeted by the DCCC, Rep. Adam Putnam of Florida was not sent a donation because he has announced that he is not seeking re-election in 2010, according to the PAC’s statement.

Please Can somebody just throw a pie in his face!
These 12 repugs (and all but 3 others) stood up for "conservative idiot-ology" while telling the rest of Americans "Suck it up and loose your jobs and homes like real Americans".
When you "bite the Bit". (Racing terms.) You go for the lead.
I really wish the GOP would focus on helping pull the US out of this economic crisis instead of only looking for ways to get back into power. Small minds = small ideas.
The twelfth one is just waiting for his turn under Romeny's desk...
If we had a gold standard and no central bank this wouldn't even be an issue.
The money should have went to some needy family and stop this maddness poeple.
isn't that called bribery?
Boy could I teach you how, to win the Triple Crown. The Racing Expert at your service. "Unbridled">>>>>
OHH BOY, IT'S THE "PARTY OF NO" AGAIN! "TAX CUTS FOR EVERYONE"!!!
Matt in Detroit,
You are moronic!!! Still drinking the Repub kool-aid? Hey if Mitt had anything good to offer then he would have won the race... but he didn't.
Obama/Biden '12
Romney, don't you know these 11 or 12 people won't be anywhere to be found when you make your run for President...you think you're buying future favour with Republicans, but you're not.
Why did it reach these heights, Romney and the come latelys' have had their heads buried in the sand during the last eight years and suddenly they have fiscal insight, if you climb down from the ivory towers, refuse self salaries, then you have some merit
Mitt would make a great weatheman
Romney, the Republicans, and the Mormons are fighting for relevancy. If they want to put their money into defending their positions (Free and Strong America PAC, anti-Prop 8), that is their prerogative. But as we saw during the campaign, all of the money in the world can't help you win if your message is wrong. Romney and Obama both had lots of money, but Obama won his party's nomination because he had the best message.
The "undaunted dozen" is just another republi-con example of naming something the opposite of what it actually is. These undistinguised twits are more accurately just indistinct ditto-head "party uber alles" republi-con sheeple.
Jim@Obstructionist was last week's DNC talking point designed to belittle republicans and all of those who didn't drink the Obama kool aid or dream about walking in on his shower. I am sure those elitists have come up with something new by now.
This is obviously an attempt by Romney to build support for a primary bid in 2012. What Romney has not realized yet is that the far right Christian conservatives of the Republican Party reject his religion as a cult, and will attempt to defeat his primary bid.
Being a member of the political party that thrives on prejudice and division sure has its' disadvantages.
dummy!! what is the purpose of this? i think that 11 grand could have been put toward better use...typical...
Please remind me . . . what exactly did Mitt Romney and his Republican buddies do over the past 8 years to head off this mess we're in now?
Oh, yeah . . . apparently nothing other than contributing to it and cashing their fat paychecks. Say what you want about Obama, at least he's trying to do something. Trust me Mary – your stock investments would be disappearing much faster if Obama weren't pushing this stimulus package.
Keep posturing Mitt, that seems to be what you do best.
And....scene...
In Act II, he's going to go get an over-tan by "accident" so he can compete with Jindal and Steele...just watch....the guy couldn't be more of a strutting political peacock.
If the Republicans thought Mitt (with his 5 sons serving their country by running around in air conditioned buses getting Daddy elected) was the best choice, why not make him your party choice instead of McCain?
Because, competence is not a qualification for serving as an elected Republican! You have to be "born again" Christian ... not a Morman. The GOP had 8 years, failed miserably and have nothing to add to solving the problems: they just whine and quote Nancy's drug policy ... they just say no! The republicans don't even want to help their own people: posturing that about not taking unemployment funding ... let them eat cake – tax cuts for the rich – the failed policies of the past will be the failed policies of the future ....
The purchasing of support for his next presidential bid begins ...
when was the last time romney had to worry about a morgage or health care
Where were these fiscal watchdog Republicans when Bush was spending like a madman for the alst years? They didnt stand up and say NO to Bush and where was Rommey for the last years crying about the high spending of the Bush years and the 8 years the Republicans were in control of the House and Senate.....the answer...he was no where.
