From

(CNN) - I'd give the president's performance tonight a solid B: Substantive, not inspirational. Sober, more programs than hope. Lots of promises - details to come.

Borger, take a flying leap into reality.

Wendy Taylor-Hill   February 25th, 2009 1:15 am ET

President Obama knows how to talk to the average American and the not-so average American. He is an excellent speaker and gives us inspiration.

He is a true visionarian and that is what truly great people are.

Dave   February 25th, 2009 12:50 am ET

This is a bit contradictory from Borger's earlier article from today where she stated that we need someone who sounds like they know what they are doing. I bet Borger and Gergen fight over who is in love with obama more backstage while Anderson watches, very annoyed.

Brad, California   February 25th, 2009 12:48 am ET

Gloria, you just don't get it – maybe that's in spite of rather than because you have worked your way to a CNN Senior Political Analyst position.

My mother, a lifelong, diehard republican in her late 80's who has never missed a vote in her life and has never voted for democrat as well, called this evening to tell me that President Obama had delivered what was in her opinion the best presidential address that she had ever heard, topping her previous all-time favorite by Franklin Roosevelt. President Obama spoke directly to America and made himself very clear.

She hit the nail right on the head when she said that the problem with the "analysts" and the "governors" is that although they may in fact be highly educated, they are missing the ultimate qualification – they have never lived through and in the middle of a great depression, so their thoughts and comments are basically inflated attempts at self admiration of their own theories which no one really cares about anyway.

Are you just another one of the throngs of commentators who hopes that the president's plan fails, because in hoping for failure of his plan, or any plan for that matter, you are in turn hoping for defeat and the failure of America just to prove your own points of ignorance.

You should consider returning to Colgate University to re-learn some of the things you've apparently forgotten along the way, such as understanding that the citizens of American are the ultimate judges, and a journalist turned political comentator under the guise of an analyst is nothing better than an out-of-work American looking for hope and a job, and nothing worse than a southern governor attempting to have his way to Washington paved by the failure of our country.

Shame on you!

yonimal   February 25th, 2009 12:41 am ET

what do you mean it was not inspirational???? it was such an uplifting speech.

ken from jefferson city   February 25th, 2009 12:41 am ET

Gloria give the man a break ,if that speech couldn't motivate you seek
medical help.

oknfl   February 25th, 2009 12:37 am ET

I give it an A+. Just my opinion and reaction.

Hillary B.   February 25th, 2009 12:36 am ET

I disagree, I found it to be incredibly inspirational. A+ in my book!

Wolf-Woman Palin Charlotte, NC   February 25th, 2009 12:19 am ET

Borger didn't listen to the President's speech. You can't listen when you are constantly running your mouth interrupting everyone.

joan knapp   February 24th, 2009 11:57 pm ET

President Obama's speech was honest, straight forward talk to the American people. He laid out the challenge we must face and conquer in these difficult times. He was inspirational and told all of us what needs to be done NOW and in the immediate future. He's fantastic!

Kula   February 24th, 2009 11:55 pm ET

I am wondering why Borger has been undermining Obama right from the primaries to the elections to even now that he is a president. This woman is racist.

Tribunus Plebis   February 24th, 2009 11:51 pm ET

Gloria... Please try to get into the moment. This was an historic occasion: Obama, the first African-American president, addressing a Congress still full of mostly white men who are older than he is, and by comparison he's the indisputable energy source in the room, in fact in the nation - a rousing, serious, intelligent, smiling live wire of a man, who's not backing down from his historical moment. A "B"? Please...

raagos   February 24th, 2009 11:41 pm ET

i think u doing u job,, becuase u get paid talking on tv. but alot people lost they jobs waiting for any hope

also nobody cares what u think about speech

i love cnn. BUT THIS POLITICAL ANALYST GLORIA BORGER

Kathy   February 24th, 2009 11:41 pm ET

Wait and see. No change... No action... Just follow the leaders... Pelosi, Frank and Reid.

Sheri   February 24th, 2009 11:38 pm ET

final grade A, YES WE CAN AND WE WILL RISE AGAIN
GREAT AND PROSPEROUS NATION WITH A GRADE "A" PRESIDENT

S. Wright   February 24th, 2009 11:30 pm ET

"Substantive, not inspirational."

Really, Ms. Borger?

What substance did you hear? Any details about anything? Any plans?

Substance. I do not think that word means what you think it does.

Substance = detail. That is what the banks, the credit markets, the investment houses, and businesses all over this country care to have divulged to them.

We got nothing, Ms. Borger.

Nothing.

marie   February 24th, 2009 11:17 pm ET

I give the President an A,I thought it was very informative, inspirational and very straight forward. I did not like the republican response that followed.I have never seen the opposing party address the country following a Presidential address before. Why was that necessary. The majority of Americans don't care what they think.I think that was very disrespectful and unnecessary.

Al, California   February 24th, 2009 11:12 pm ET

Only A+.
We are rewarded beyond belief for supporting Obama campaign.
And please invent a mark well below F for the previous president speeches. What it could be? G or H – or better W.

peter   February 24th, 2009 11:11 pm ET

why solid B Borger? why not A+? I saw a determine president who care for this country then any other past president in my life time tonight.

I give the president myself an A+ not solid B.

G.U. NEAL   February 24th, 2009 11:05 pm ET

I give the President's speech a B- He spoke with confidence and vigor, that as people working together with the focus on sound solutions and hard work we will recover from our serious problems.

I believe that with prayer and Gods help, we will rise as a nation healthy and stronger!

Austin, Texas

Susan   February 24th, 2009 11:04 pm ET

Not inspirational?? Did you listen to, and watch, the same speech that I did? Your comment serves to reinforce my belief that political analysts are, as a rule, terribly out of touch with the average American.

Obama 2.0   February 24th, 2009 11:03 pm ET

Borger is not qualified to grade Obama! What has she ever done to qualify her to grade one of the best president this country has ever seen?

mel   February 24th, 2009 11:03 pm ET

You are kidding right? Even McCain voters dials were off the charts on the top.....

D Collins   February 24th, 2009 11:02 pm ET

Did Borger listen to the same speech the rest of us heard? I think the analysts have been in their seats too long and need a vacation badly. If that did not find that speech inspirational then she must have slept through the speeches of the last 8 years.

JUSTICE   February 24th, 2009 11:00 pm ET

WHO ISTHE LOSER THAT GAVE A "B"? THIS WAS AN "A" PERFORMANCE ALL AROUND.

stephen   February 24th, 2009 10:59 pm ET

An excellent speech given by Mr. Pres.ident

JT from TN   February 24th, 2009 10:56 pm ET

Yea lots of promises but I want him to com thru on these promises. We can talk all day but action is what we all need. I really wasn't looking to be inspired tonight. I was looking for leadership.

Katherine Wilson   February 24th, 2009 10:55 pm ET

The USA todate do not torture prisoners . . . what are they doing to the non-violent, young, uneducated offenders at Florence, Co maximum security prison. These non-violent offenders are given more than life sentences and left in locked down for 23 hours a day. It is extreme punishment to the family and the individual. Save money and allow time served plus community service. We will have shown mercy to the least of us, living up to the principles we profess as we lay our hands on the bible. Thank you!

Cathy   February 24th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

I give President Obama an A+ on his performance. I think he did an outstanding job and I was definitely inspired.

sherryscoobydoo   February 24th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

I believe he got an A on his speech.

i'm waiting on my legislator's in washington to actually respond to someone like me who doesnt make 250,000 and up.

i hope they help the president to help me and my family instead of themselves.

i have called them all and no response.

i want to see the accountability of the companies and the agencys who do more harm than good and dont care who they hurt or have to account to anyone.

cabmaker 1   February 24th, 2009 10:52 pm ET

Wonderful speech.. Great President..He will make changes in america that will go down in History as the Major turning point is social change beyond anything that most americans could ever believe

Joe White   February 24th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

The Republicans are basically throwing a temper tantrum. They are responsible for the mess the country is in, the HUGE deficit, and the loss of the White House, and the Senate and House seats. The served under one of the worst Presidents in history. They are fortunate to have retained the seats they have in Congress. They should be ashamed, not attacking a new President.

babs from Denver   February 24th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

This was a SOLID A+ speech. Tough, informative, forward looking AND most of all intelligent. How refreshing to have a president that looks, acts and talks presidential.

CA Loves Obama   February 24th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

I don't think the forum of tonight's speech was set upf or details – it should have been inspirational and it was.

My grade: A

Farrell, Houston, Tx   February 24th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

WHAT IS JINDAL TALKING ABOUT WHEN HE TALKS ABOUT KATRINA SAYING GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT PLAY A PART WHEN GOVERNMENT PAID $176 MILLION TO LOUISIANA FOR KATRINA RECOVERY. IS HE ANOTHER REPUBLICAN NUT CASE.

Joe Fattal   February 24th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

He gets an F until the stimulus proves to be the right bill for eveyone. He makes good speeches, and most people are attracted to that. But sooner or later he has to come out with something beside a speech.

Darren D.   February 24th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

My President got a "A"! Nite-Nite LA Gov 'J"!

Harley   February 24th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

Well Obama Says Alot But No Details !!! He Says He Wants To Cut Spending But He Spent More Money Than Any Other Pres. I Don't Understand Pres. Bush Sent Troops To Afghanistan And The Dem. Got Mad He Does It And It's Ok !!!! Oh i Forgot He Is God

Andrea   February 24th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

President Obama has accomplished more in his first month than the Republicans did in the last eight years. He's on the job, and I am loving every moment of it.

EC   February 24th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

Despite your solid B grade Gloria, I gave President Obama an A compared to the stiff and oh so boring response Gov. Jindal gave. I was disgusted that Gov. Jindal used Hurricane Katrina as an excuse to lay blame on excess spending!!! When if fact HIS STATE was supported by outside help than from his own Republican President or Party, who did absolutely NOTHING!!!!

Paolo   February 24th, 2009 10:43 pm ET

Obama did a good job at lessening the pessimism.

Katherine Wilson   February 24th, 2009 10:43 pm ET

The USA todate do not torture prisoners . . . what are they doing to the non-violent, young, uneducated offenders at Florence, Co locked down for 23 hours without contact. Save money and send them home to serve family and country. Thank you!

loverboy   February 24th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

obama gets an b+ from me

Independent voter   February 24th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

A+ for our President, his encouraging message filled with hope and strength! A+!

Cuban-mom   February 24th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

Loved President Obama's speech. Now its up to the GOP, WILL they continue to spew hate, obstruct, criticize or will they join the Democrats and help our Nation to recover?

I notice that on all the TV polls most Americans watched, and gave Obama kudos!

GOP .......don't be on the wrong side of history, it will be your undoing!

Jim   February 24th, 2009 10:40 pm ET

Its an A overall: A+ on identifying the needs of the nation; B+ on hoe and inspiration; C on detail but its not wat you expert the president to do on the stage; and A on talking to the american people.

CJ   February 24th, 2009 10:40 pm ET

Honey where were you! This speech was very inspirational. Promises with no details, were you not listening. I remember vividly when Obama stated he would be making cuts in the budget, much spending on things not needed. This man gives more hope, inspiration, and pride to the American people than they have seen for years. Barack was sensational. Go Barack and Michelle, the world loves you!!!

Jindal, The Republican Tool   February 24th, 2009 10:40 pm ET

The Republicans are out of touch with reality. They think that Bobby Jindal is going to save their party. Let me tell you Bobby Jindal is just an idiot trying to play that "I'm the son of an Indian immigrant" bs card. Bobby Jindal is a tool and I'm not a bit impress by him.

Jindal wish he was Obama, Sorry dude, you are not, not even close.

Dr. Judy   February 24th, 2009 10:39 pm ET

Jindal gets a D.

He is so great, but after Obama, he fell flat.

jonny   February 24th, 2009 10:39 pm ET

I thought the speech was totally inspirational!! Especially the stuff about education.

redddog   February 24th, 2009 10:39 pm ET

I love President Obama. I hope the United States can offer every willing child/student/person the opportunity to get more than a high school education. I've always wondered why this was never provided. If President Obama told me to jump off a cliff, I would have enough faith in him to do it. My only concern while watching President Obama speak was watching V.P Biden with that frown on his face. To me it didn't show support. for President Obama. If V.P Biden has regrets then get off the stage and let somebody else sit that chair. President Obama sends a message of HOPE, whether he can deliver or not. At least he's trying. I am 57 yrs. old, college educated and retired to due some health issues. Currently I am taking care of my disabled Dad, but I do fully intend to volunteer my services, as President Obama has requested, hopefully at Good Samaritian Hospital of Baltimore Md..

a little sad   February 24th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

I'd give Jindal a c- – overly dramatized platitudes with no facts backing him up.

On the other hand, if he is pro-life, does he believe that life bgins at conception?

If so, does his being a "pre-existing condition" as his mother was pregnant when she arrived in the US, can he be considered qualitifed to run for president? After all, if life bgins at conception, he was born to non-citizens who had not arrived in the US when his life began.

mary,florida   February 24th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

A+++

Tina   February 24th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

How dare the republican party speak of Hurricane Katrina. The republican party is clueless and the American people are sick of the politics

michel rubini   February 24th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

Get BOBBY JINDAL off the air! He makes me crazy!!!!!!!

Sharon   February 24th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

Well, Gloria I think the American people know more of what is going on than you guys. We understand that the President knows what we are up against and systems are needed because there have not been any in place from previoius government. We already know what the President is going to do while you guys are scratching your heads trying to figure it out. Just open your eyes and look around and you see how the deficit is going to be cut. I just giving you a little hint.

Put an End to the Republican Reign Over the US   February 24th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

WHY is this Bobby Jindahl guy blowing smoke up peoples butts?
He makes a FABULOUS Childrens Book reader. Such emphasis in his blithering words.
Republicans are such hypocrits. Spending was perfectly fine while the CHENEY/Bush administration was spending it.

And another thing......to those who say Obama's the anti-christ.....look at where Jindahls ansetry comes from........Let's call it like it is......Mr. Bobby Jindahl would be MORE of an Anti-Christ than Obama since he DOES come from the Party of EVIL.....REPUBLICAN.

Mari   February 24th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

President Obama's speech though familiar, was brilliant. He called out the best of America! No wonder his approval rating is in the 60+% rate!

Now its up to the GOP........ I ask do they continue their usual obstruction? Or will they join together with the Democrats to pull our Nation back on the path to prosperity?

Sadly.......... the GOP will continue their vile-obstructionist politics, and you know what it will get them? VOTED OUT OF OFFICE!

HOPE WON.......... YES WE CAN AMERICA.......AND YES WE WILL!

Marin   February 24th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

Just B?
This was at least A-.

aless   February 24th, 2009 10:34 pm ET

He gets and A+, especially when compared to Governor Jindal

america first   February 24th, 2009 10:33 pm ET

A+A+A++++++++++++++++++++++++!!!!!!

G.R.I.T.S - Girl Raised in the South   February 24th, 2009 10:33 pm ET

Wonderful speech regardless of what Gloria Borger says. Now, if we could just get Jindal to talk to us like we're adults. I feel like I'm watching an educational video in grade school.

mark   February 24th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Great speech, inspirational yet grounded. Jindall has a tough time rebutting that.

Tom in Delaware   February 24th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

My favorite part was when he said the ARRA didn't have a single earmark.

Of course, the fact that it's nothing more than a collection of every liberal earmark that never actually made it into any other bills for the past 20 years needs to be completely overlooked for that statement to be true, but hey, technically he's right.

And if you, the American voter want to belive that BS then be my guest...just don't get all worked up when this whole thing collapses and people like me said "I told you so."

2010   February 24th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

One word: Brilliant.
Sorry you were not inspired, Ms. Borger, but I respectfully disagree. President Obama did a great job tonight.

Frost/Tennessee   February 24th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Jindal... is this the best they have? Like a used car lot seller.. Click

Bobby Jindal   February 24th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Bobby Jindal sounds like an infomercial. So fake.

Marie R   February 24th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

I give him a A plus

Joan , Ontario   February 24th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

I disagree. He gets an A+. If this inspiring speech doesn't bring Americans together and bring confidence then nothing will. He eloquently hit so many markers and did it clearly and intelligently. I actually enjoyed just listening to him speak and how often can you say that about a political speech? I wouldn't want to be Jindal having to respond to that speech especially with the huge PR problems the Republicans have gotten themselves into. Their leaders and the people on the front lines are so disconnected right now. President Obama did your country proud tonight. I hope you all appreciate him because he has the hardest job on the face of the earth.

Bobby Jindal   February 24th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

OMG!! Is this guy for real??

He sounds like a commercial, a bad infomercial..

CARL   February 24th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

GO PRESIDENT OBAMA . GREAT SPEECH. YOUR GOOD.

CARL   February 24th, 2009 10:28 pm ET

PRESIDENT OBAMA what a speech HE is GOOD.
GOP don't be the party of NO. watch out GOP we have a great president. get on board. Obama will be a great president.

The REPUBLICANS look horrible on t.v. always negative .
You will keep losing election acting that way.

Proud American   February 24th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

Why didn't the Idiot republicans stay at home if all they were going to do was sleep? Losers.

mike   February 24th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

who cares what grade u give it

Ex-Republican for Obama - TX   February 24th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

Are you kidding me???? That was a wonderful way to inspire our country. I wonder what grade you will give Jindal?

joblesscollegegrad   February 24th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

your thoughts are unimportant...Obama gets an A+

Susan   February 24th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

I grade him with an "A".

Matthew, Detroit   February 24th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

LIKE THE OLD SAYING...

The Devil is in the Details...

aliou FL   February 24th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

I give him an A+++.
At last an intelligible speech. Far away from the bush's giberies of the last 8 years.

Matthew, Detroit   February 24th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

BARACK IS A STONE FACE LIAR.

He is going to raise taxes.

His new budget appropriations bill comes put next week. 450 Billion and it has thousands of EARMARKS in it.

He just said no earmarks. What a Liar.

He is going to spend more money than has ever been spent.
He is going to tax more than we have ever been taxed.

ines   February 24th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

Solid A+. He just made it look easy.

john   February 24th, 2009 10:21 pm ET
