WASHINGTON (CNN) - In the wake of a highly publicized chimpanzee attack, the House made its first official move to ban humans from owning primates as pets.

The House overwhelmingly voted in favor of passing the Captive Primate Safety Act on Tuesday, which prohibits people from buying or transporting primates across state lines to keep as pets. This legislation amended the Lacey Act, which had only applied to wildlife and fish.

The bill moves now to the Senate, where Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer of California, and Republican Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana will lead the effort to pass the legislation.

Your right Debby....only problem....this woman legally had the pet claused into the laws of her city forbidding this beautiful creature as a pet. What happens with those that currently have them?

Someone also mentioned the 10th admen. being violated by the right to choose......

sadly, lots of people are not taking responsiblity for their personal actions inviting government to regulate...perhaps some peer pressure would help.

I applaud this! Primates are NOT pets!

Missy, JJ, and Shawn-Tx- the only maulings you hear about are pit bulls, but many other breeds maul people and animals. The media knows people eat up the stories about pit bulls, when they are consistently down at number 5 on the list of breeds that have bitten every year. Pit Bulls are bred to be docile to humans, and human attacks by pit bulls are rare, but the media makes sure we hear about every single one of them. You three have obviously never truly known a pit bull. Ignorance creates fear.

Jon in Ca (California is CA, Calcium is Ca): Obviously you're just trying to rile everyone up in light of The New York Post's bad judgement referring to our president as a primate. Not funny.

    IT IS GOOD

With a single 200-lb chimpanzee having the strength of 8 muscle-bound men, , , but also having the stability of a "multiple-personality-psycho" schizophrenic with serious mood swings, , , I think Congress's bipartisan effort to save idiotic Americans from their over indulgence in individual rights, , , WAS A VERY GOOD THING!
