WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The White House released an excerpt this afternoon of the speech President Obama will deliver to a joint session of Congress this evening:

"But while our economy may be weakened and our confidence shaken; though we are living through difficult and uncertain times, tonight I want every American to know this: We will rebuild, we will recover, and the United States of America will emerge stronger than before.

"The weight of this crisis will not determine the destiny of this nation. The answers to our problems don’t lie beyond our reach. They exist in our laboratories and universities; in our fields and our factories; in the imaginations of our entrepreneurs and the pride of the hardest-working people on Earth. Those qualities that have made America the greatest force of progress and prosperity in human history we still possess in ample measure. What is required now is for this country to pull together, confront boldly the challenges we face, and take responsibility for our future once more."

To Ryan,CA. I will place you in the same category as those educationally lacking fools who seem to be unable to speak or even spell complete words. I refer to them as the abreviates. The ones who always have half of a word still lodged in their throats. And whether you agree or not B.O. offers one thing and one thing only-a lot of bull defecation. I would have used the generally accepted word but then I too would have become an abreviate. And I know that the moderator for this site would not have approved of its appearance.

God Bless you, and God shine his light on the United States, the greatest country in the world. WE WILL SURVIVE...and be better than ever.

OMFG!   February 24th, 2009 7:45 pm ET

I feel the need to comment on this article because CNN closed the thread of jindal critizing the President's address! Jindal is a 37 year old idiot! Obama has been President for under 1 month, and the old farts from the GOP have "lost trust..." W.T.....F!?!@? The GAP hasn't given the new black guy (oohhh, I said that, oooohhh) even 1 month and they have LOST TRUST in the President, I...D...I...O...T...S...!!!!

Dear Gray Old Perverts,
You idiots lost, because you fools are OUT OF TOUCH WITH THE REST OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE REST OF THE WORLD!
You have to get a guy like Bobby (I wanna be a white guy) Jindal disagreeing with a popular president. I hope NONE of you fools get re-elected in 2010 going forward! The MAJORITY of the WORLD AND I WOULD FEEL SAFER IF NONE OF YOU JERKS WAS IN POWER!

"I've instructed my members, when the camera cuts to you, look like someone pissed in your corn flakes," said Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY.)

Seems the Republican members of Congress have been busy today taking lessons and practicing their grumpy expressions to "wear" for the TV cameras during President Obama's speech tonight. Can the quote above and their theatrics really be true? If so, it's disgusting, petty, childish, and irresponsible of them to "plan" such a "show" - who do they think they're fooling? It truly seems that the Republican Party has become "The Party of NO" with ZERO credibility!

I can't wait to watch Obama's speech. But I know what the Repugs wil say, so I'll turn the channel after that.

The Repugs are showing us what they're made of – all NO WAY and no answers. They can't get rich off Obama's plan. They can't give money and contracts to their cronyies. Boo hoo! It's so funny watching them implode.

I'll vote for Obama again and again – primary, general, he'll win again hands down (especially with the clowns the GOP circus has to offer!)

It is Change allright but not what you thought it was gonna be, even the LIbs beloved Bill Ayers, stated that Obama looks like he will go down because of Afghanastan!

Biased   February 24th, 2009 6:54 pm ET

I will be listening to hear if this is more of a Presidential speech or whether it sounds as if he is still running for office. Until he comes out with more detail, which his aides say he won't be – and lets those who are in trouble or uncertain about what is going to happen next, he can offer hope all he wants but the devil is in the details and until people know them- the uncertainty will never go away because they don't know what wil happen next.

I am 20yr old black felmale from a small city in Alabama. I'm surprised at some of my fellow Americans. Do people really think that all of our problem will be fixed in this short amount of time? Despite what you heard, President Obama is not the Messiah! He is man with a heavy load and many problems to fix. Problems that include education, jobs, health care, and wars; how can people truly think that he could fix it all with the flick of his wrist? I believe that in time, President Obama will solve many of the problems that we are facing as a nation. But we must do our part to help. That is what makes us the United States of America. Despite our differences on issues, we are still united! At least that's how it should be....

It really sounds good but it won't happen until a true person of character and perseverance occupies the White House. Someone every American can admire and respect. Maybe this will take place. But not for another four years. We must first suffer through another inept and clueless administration. Time is running out folks. The voters need to wise up and wise up quickly.

I love the bozos who are complaining that – gasp – Obama is giving a speech tonight. The State of the Union is just that, a speech. To my knowledge, no President has whipped out a pen mid-speech during the State of the Union and signed an Executive Order.

Grow up, folks. Tonight's a traditional speech that has been given by presidents past and likely by presidents future.

Obama *is* taking action. Tonight, however, he's giving a speech, just as Bush did before him.

smokesignals, can we afford more than 30 days of Obama/Democrat spending? In 30+ days he has increased the national debt 1/5 of what Bush did in 8 years. If that keeps up, he'll make Bush look like a financial wizard. Mind you I ddn't like Bush. I'm glad he's gone. But I thought BO promised us changes. He preaches financial responsibility, then spends money we don't have. He sends 900 MILLION dollars to the Palestinians, while our people suffer.

If he took 200 Billion of the stimulus package, and gave 100,000 to people in forclosure, he would have helped 2,000,000 people!!! That would have ended the housing crisis, the bank crisis, and infused money into the economy. Instead he gave it to the corrupt and greedy banks, mortgage company and all the rest that donated so generously to his campaign.

Let's face it, we were duped. Let's here his sweet talk tonight, so all you loosers can swoon and put cherios on your forhead and drool over Saint Obama. Then get your checkbook, because it's gonna cost us, big time.

One thing he will say is that most of our troops will be out of Iraq by August 2010. Sounds pretty much like that is when "conditions on the ground" would warrant such a pullout. Thanks for following Bush's lead on this, it's good to hear him acknowledge that Bush was right on this.

Start the "camera count". Let's see how many times Obama "needs" the audiences, the cameras, the clapping in order to do his job. Americans don't need sales talk – they need substantive remedies. Since he has been President – he's been in front of crowds yapping while the stock market sinks, the unemployment rates go up, people are displaced from their homes, crying on the news and this guy is smiling.

Wow, this guy can do absolutely no wrong for some reason or another. He gives us a bill that ONLY aids certain homeowners. What about us that were financially responsible and decided against even BUYING a home because we couldn't afford it? So my taxes will go to help a few? Ridiculous. I can understand stimulus for the financial sectors, we all benefit from them staying in business. But I don't benefit from Bob down the street getting some of my tax money to help him keep his home. I wish I could own a home, can't afford it though. What about the wonderful car stimulus package we did? Oh wait, the car corporations will STILL go bankrupt, good call on that one. Nobody is going to be buying cars right now, but hey, money well spent Barack. What about this new stimulus package that has important spending such as providing for new sod for the Smithsonian musuem grounds. Wow, that is stimulating. I don't care what you have to say Barack, get back to work and come up with something competent, that's what we are paying you for, not for pretty speeches that "inspire" us. You are proving to be as worthless as old King George Bush.

Fix the economy   February 24th, 2009 5:41 pm ET

Just fix the economy already. Less talk, more action. Just do it. It can't be THAT hard. I am sure professional economists already know exactly what to do to get this thing fixed pronto, so let's just do whatever they recommend. Besides, giving fancy speeches that sound nice is just silly. If we wanted someone like that we would have elected him President by now. What is the whole point of speeches anyway? It's not like anyone pays any attention to them. Certainly not the traders on Wall Street. Whoops I misspelled "traitors" in that last sentence. Sorry.

John   February 24th, 2009 5:37 pm ET

@no corporate politics,
You dolt! That;s why we voted for Obama. Because he didn't just tell people what they wanted to hear. He has said all along that this would be a difficult road. He even said during the campaign when asked, "Are you afraid you might lose?" And he said, "No. I'm afraid I might win."
He never said this would be easy. He never said things were rosy. He never said We'd have immediate Peace and Prosperity.
It's the Republicans that tell the Christians what they want to hear and then sell their votes to the highest bidder. It's the republicans that haven't done anything to stop abortion, until they finally screamed and they banned harvesting stemcells from zygotes that would be flushed anyways. It's the republicans who controlled the Congress, Courts, Executive Branch and the media. Yet, we still don't have prayer in public schools.
The only promise they kept was to cut taxes for rich guys.
You are the one who was lied to. Not Me.
You are the one who is dissillusioned (and should be). Not me.
You are the one who was cheated and didn't know it. I was too.
But, that's why I voted for Barrack Obama.
Liberals won. Get Used to it.

ken from jefferson city mo   February 24th, 2009 5:35 pm ET

This is what we need to hear because this country is the greatest and
everybody knows it I'm tired of all the doom and gloom our president ,
or the press is going to solve our problems we are if we can remember where we come from for example we all have lost a job at least once in our life and what did we do we got off our butts and found a new job , also we lived when money was tight before and look
we made it and we came back stronger and the stock market been
down before and it came up again and finally if you lost your house that means 1 thing if you can do it once you can do it again so don't give up that's not what we are about , just get every morning and say
how can I make this country better and remember the old saying
WHAT COMES AROUND GOES AROUND and WHAT DOESN'T BREAK US WILL MAKE US STRONGER.

That is what he does and well reading from a teleprompter.

What really matters is positive action and we have seen little of that in the first month.
