Biden convenes first stimulus oversight meeting

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Vice President Joe Biden convened the first of what is expected to be a series of weekly stimulus plan implementation meetings Wednesday, saying it's critical to ensure that "the money that is spent is spent well."

The $787 billion package "is about creating and saving jobs now," Biden said. "We've got to make sure we hold as many people as possible accountable. (We need to) follow the money to make sure it's getting out there and is working."

Biden, who has been tasked with overseeing the distribution of stimulus funds, announced several fund disbursements, including $15 billion in Medicaid assistance and $10 billion to help make public housing more energy efficient.

Several Cabinet members attended the conference at the White House, including Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, Office of Management and Budget Director Peter Orszag, Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

Former Interior Department Inspector General Earl Devaney, who has been tapped to head a new Recovery Act Transparency and Accountability Board, also attended.

The Transparency and Accountability Board was established by President Barack Obama to ensure that the stimulus package is spent in an open, efficient manner.

The "unprecedented spending" in the stimulus package, Obama said Monday, comes with an "unprecedented obligation" to avoid waste.

"[U]nprecedented obligation" to avoid waste unlike President Bush who put 26Million dollars in cash on a jet and flew it to Iraq, and later said he was unable to account for it. I do not recall McCain complaining about that. Obama is clearing doing all he can with large expenditures targeted for maximum impact to stop the current meltdown. To delay would be to repeat the mistakes made by Japan when they had a similar economic crisis.

Obama is demonstrating an extraordinary level of competence. He has raised the bar on what Americans will expect in their leadership. Not one Republican commentator or politician comes across as credible in their criticisms.

They should name the dog either Salia or Malasha. Its nothing but the two girls names put together. It has a nice ring to it.

I see Biden is playing "catholic" with his wednesday ashes. Too bad he doesn't actually believe or practice anything the church teaches.

He wants to look all serious, have people think he attended Ash Wednesday mass. Truth is he fell asleep on an ink spot during nap time, and nobody told him about the mark. This is kind of like putting a pyromaniac in charge of a fire prevention meeting.

Odd that Barack wants openness and efficiency, seeing as this thing is neither.

Guess a more appropriate title for Biden would be Pig Monger, as he's overseeing the dishing out of pork.

This action, as with so much else, clearly indicates that the Obama Admin is serious about their commitment to both transparency and accountability, which renders so much of the Republican criticisms as simply invalid and just political ranting. Last night George Will made a statement that I think I quote accurately as, ‘President Obama wants to take it from the successful and give it to the unsuccessful’. When Republicans use narrow views such as that to criticize, yet they actually blindly and stubbornly supported the arrogant irresponsibility of Bush-Cheney, and then they advocate that they offer hope for the average American with having a real desire for bipartisan cooperation, as Bobby Jindal stated, yet they just follow a strong and united obstructionist policy that literally only faults, blocks and attempts to sabotage everything, they really instill no confidence and rather only generate contempt. It seems they always try to justify returning to more of the same concentration on Special Interests and a select few where they gave only apathy, the costs and an abundance of subterfuge to the many and that is totally unacceptable. Republicans now simply depend on rhetoric to deceive instead of deeds to believe.

YES – let's make public housing more energy efficient as opposed to ELIMINATING the need for public housing.

How about free beer/wine coupons to be sent with unemployement checks too??

I certainly hope they passed out a copy of Turbo Tax to these cabinet members! This huge pork bill will need the democrats to start paying their taxes.

He's got something on his forehead. But seriously, it is so nice to see transparency in action in our government. This makes it even more apparent that the Bush admin kept everything behind closed doors.

ANOTHER RIP-OFF: You can be sure that years from now we will learn of the billions of dollars in the stimulus that were wasted, misappropriated, and essentially stolen–and no one will be punished. What a pathetic joke. A once great nation ruined by incompetence and greed.

Biden keep an eye on Jindal. The ones that start trouble are always the crooked ones. The repugs are mad because there wasn't any money going to their rich pals.

Does anyone REALLY think this administration is going to disclose how or if money gets wasted??

*IF* a corporate CEO or banker used the funds to buy a tuna sandwich there will be Senate hearings. But money going to ACORN and democrat pet projects will disappear without a peep.
