Taylor, a Democrat, says the budget isn't 'change.'

(CNN) – Mississippi Democratic Rep. Gene Taylor blasted the budget outline President Obama submitted to Capitol Hill today, saying “I don’t like it…change is not running up even bigger deficits that George Bush did.”

“That’s what George Bush did very well. Apparently that’s what President Obama is doing.”

Taylor, a conservative “blue dog” who voted against the stimulus bill, noted he was still reviewing the plan but was troubled by the additional amount of spending for many government programs on top of the recent increased funding many agencies received in the economic stimulus bill.

Watch: Conservative Dems dog Obama

As a member of the Armed Service Committee, Taylor noted the budget only gives the Defense Department a “small increase,” which he said would barely cover the cost of living adjustments for the military.

Taylor pointed to President Obama’s inaugural address that called for Americans to make sacrifices, saying “It’s certainly not reflected in his budget.”

His budget is a joke, who was the guy that was going to read it line for line and erase needless spending? Did he get to busy? He never got to that with the stimulus package, did he? I heard one of his cuts is the USDA budget, thats funny does Obama know that 2/3 of that budget is food stamps, school lunches, and welfare(WIC) money for the under privileged, unemployed, etc...? We all know darn well he is NOT cutting any of those programs. When is Obama going to take "Responsibility". He did just spend a trillion dollars in 30 days.

Republican-Extremists dug us in this hole because they know how to campaign, but are woefully inept when it came to governing. George the Stupid, Newt the Grinch, Rush "Oxycontin" Limbaugh and every other blubbering neo-conservative mouthy-shill from Ann Coulter to Michelle Malkin – all of them – rah-rah-rahed most into thinking the conservaties were responsible enough to trust that there would be transparency and honesty in their governing. But, no – they were too caught up in their own campaign rhetoric to step up to the plate and spend the necessary political capital and public money to rebuild our infrastructure, reveal the true cost of Cheney's Folly (Iraq war), adequately fund NCLB (No Child Left Behind), regulate the banking industry (FTC/SEC) and protect our food supply (FDA)., recover from Katrina (FEMA). The list goes on and on with their failures to govern.

Time to pay the piper and guess who has to do it? All us bleeding heart libs who happen to believe that being indigent and a minority isn't a sign moral inferiority or there is a lack of ambition and self-determination. I'm just an average, middle-of-the-road American whose beliefs have been demonized by the extremist-right as somehow morally inferior to their own. No, I'm not liberal, just a moderate that's been pushed aside to the left. by a bunch of neocon thugs.

It is time to grow up and quit allowing the "Joe the Plumberization" of our public discourse.

While, I am not of the same mind, Mississippi Democratic Rep. Gene Taylor is, in his own words, a bluedog. Where is it written that eveyone must always agreee? However, I am very surprised and disheartened that Rep. Taylor has chosen to comment before he finishes, "reviewing the plan".

Politicians are their own worst enemies, sometimes.

Good luck, Mister President! There are a whole lot of americans, standing firmly behind you.

They need to get behind the ideas and try them if we are to come out of the bad position the last eight years put us in. The only ideas to come out anti budget so fare are outrage that the rich might have to anti up some more taxes and stop spending and do nothing. Get out of the way if you don't intend to contribute to the fix.

I guess Mr. Taylor didn't know that the cost of the the two wars didn't come from a separate, neat little "War Budget" that Mr. Bush kept in the mattress. While trillions of dollars is a big amount, at least all spending is included in it.

REG in AZ   February 26th, 2009 3:51 pm ET

It is hard to compare an Obama honest budget to a Bush deception and to fault it because it contains so much necessitated by the problems inherited from Bush-Cheney. It would be irresponsible to not try to resolve the problems and it is totally irresponsible to fault the costs of doing so.

To all saying give Obama a chance. You need to go back to school. The American people gave him a chance thats why he is president. It is sad that you don't know this but if you are a citizen then it is not only your right to question the leadership of a president it is also your responsibility. We are not his citizens. He is our president. He works for us.

beevee   February 26th, 2009 3:51 pm ET

It looks like Mr. Taylor is disappointed with the budget because he won't be able to help his business friends with big contracts from the government. Tough.

Maybe they could lay off some of the staff at the WHITE HOUSE and do without new drapes, etc. Maybe Michelle could be a stay at home mom and lay off the entire staff.... Hey.. that's sacrifice !! We all should do our part... financing these banks. No-one asked me.. I DID NOT want to bail out any of the fat corrupt corporations. He should have spread the money to the people in this country. They would have spent it and so on ...

Steve   February 26th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

I am sick to death of hearing people blast these ideas, but not present any ideas of their own. It doesn't take a particularly smart person to see a problem. We all know there are problems with the budget and the economy. It takes a smart person to come up with ways to get us out of this mess. Taylor isn't showing any brains by complaining about the situation. Where was he when the budget was being put together? If Taylor doesn't want to step up and help, instead of just sitting on his fat Democratic butt, then he should just shut up. McCain did nothing but whine and complain about Obama when he was running against him. See where it got him? Taylor should take that as a lesson for the future. Americans are tired of hearing politicians snipe at each other. Get off your butt and do something!

Who would have thought that the Civil War is still alive and ongoing today?

State Rights issues have ALWAYS been the wedge issue the southern states have used for populism support, and it appears these issues will also be what takes the Confederacy (and the Republicans) to their grave.

Lincoln would be a Democrat today....... am I right?

You have no more power Republicans.......seriously...there is no fight left in you – even if you're in denial – it's just the truth.

Michael   February 26th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

The Michigan Democrat comments sounds of idiocracy. How can you possibly think that the Democrats alone created this problem. Both parties (Republicans and Democrats) are equally to blame and if you are going place the blame one one party then you are not politically asute of the issues.

People like yourself on both sides of the aisle are (Democrats or Republicans) in theory, you accept what ever is told to you in the media under the name of "liberalism" or "conservatism".

Take time look at the "REAL ISSUES", without prejudice to the political party and make a judgement as what is best for the American people as a whole.

Henry Miller, Cary, NC   February 26th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Rachel said, "Also, if Taylor is so concerned about the budget, then perhaps Mississippi should decline any money from the federal budget or stimulus!"

Sure–as long as the people of Mississippi can stop paying Obama's taxes.

I don't get it–a lot of people keep ranting "Don't like the stimulus, don't take the money!" Are you all really so stupid as to think it's reasonable to demand that people pay for your freebies and get nothing from it themselves?

You welfare parasites are starting to get annoying.

Cleaning up after W   February 26th, 2009 3:50 pm ET

I agree with TShea. The reason there is so much spending is that Obama did not hide the costs of the wars like Dubya did. He can make the budget look a lot nicer to the braindead repubs out there if he used the same crooked accounting tricks as King George.

Taylor is just like the Repbulicans. They don't get it. While I don't like deficits we must keep in mind that these are not normal times. Every economist I read says we need fiscal stimulus in these times. These are times calling for Keynesian economics and not the same old political grandstandstanding dogma coming from the right – after all they caused this mess to begin with. As far as Taylor is concerned, frankly I don't care about his military budget. We spend way too much of our GDP on the military now as it is. As was raised in the past election, "who are we afraid of?" Terrorists? Last time I checked they don't use Abram tanks.

One Democrat who has sense enough to believe that what his president told us is important enough to stand on his own two feet and voice his displeasure with words that have no backing is big news on either side of the aisle.

Rather than tar and feather this guy, democrat or republican, independent or other...we should applaud him becasue this is the kind of leadership we all claim to want.

Just shut up and let Obama do what should have been done decades ago. I can't believe I heard a Republican senator sneer at the idea of investing in batteries for cars. That was like Julliani making fun of social workers. these republicans and fake Democrats are just chattering away like they have control. But they don't. Haha. You, lost. Now shut up and let a real man take control.

Sam   February 26th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

I love this. If this was McCain pushing the same Trillion Dollas Budget, all of the Democrats would be saying "more of the same", but because it is Messiah Obama, they all turn the other cheek. All of this spending is way to line the pockets of the Democratic Party. If you look at the way the "Stimulus Bill" is written, it calls for a tons of building projects, roads, bridges, etc. Most or not needed according to the experts. The key is the the "Stimulus" laws are written so that it requires that Unions get the majority of the work (Unions like to pay off elected officials, namely Democrats to keep the money flowing to them). If you get the work and you are "non-Union", you are still required to pay dues to the local Unions that did not get the work. How does this make sense? Another blatant abuse of Govt. designed to help the Democrats campaign donations flowing next election cycle. So when someone is calling the President out on his wasteful spending and abuses (especially those in his own party), we should all listen.

Seriously?   February 26th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

Let's stop pointing the fingers and start working together. The divisiveness on this board does nothing to help this situation - where people are hurting badly.

Jackie in Dallas   February 26th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

Good point. However, until you have a better plan, you ought to be specific. Bet half the stuff you don't like is for projects in other states you don't feel warrant the money. Yep, there is some crap in there, but no we can't get rid of it all and still have a concensus.

What was the figure (I think, 40%) were Republican pet projects that were allowed to stay in the hopes of getting bi-partisan support? Perhaps you should lead by example and cut some projects that benefit Mississippi...

Independent   February 26th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

Guess what you fools.. including Iraq and Afghanistan in the budget is a dog and pony show. Those 2 wars do NOT cost 1.75 trillion dollars a year.
In fact, Obama's first spendulus plan alone cost more than an entire 5 year war in Iraq. And I thought the left praised all government spending as stimulus? Soldiers need salaries! So do workers at defense contracting companies! Sounds to me like the left should have been the biggest supporter of the war "stimulus"

We can't afford this. Sorry, but soundbites about "charging the rich their fair share" (who already pay the vast majority of income tax) is not going to come up with an extra 1.75 trillion dollars. It just doesn't work.

America is finished.

If you people would've voice your opinion back in 2001 after 911 when those liars were telling the world that Saddam had WMDs, when they knew he didn't, we wouldn't be hated all over the world and we wouldn't be spending 10 billion dollars a month in Iraq rebuilding that country and thousands wouldn't be dead, but nope you people don't care about that, that's different, the white guy did it, so it's ok, but the black guy is trying to help the average american, it's a CRIME. Term limits
Drop 100% retirement pay after 4 years
Drop special medical care (they can use Medicare like everyone else

1. Learn to spell
2. Term limits would require an amendment to the Constitution it is not up to individual politicians to decide this. An amendment is a very formal process.
3. Congress does not get 100% retirement after 4 years. They never get 100%. A little research on CSRS and FERS would make you look less ignorant.
4. Congress gets the same medical benefits of any federal civil service employee. Again just a little research will help you not look ignorant.

Wow. Why is it that the diehard Obama supporters always slam anyone who doesn't go along wth Obama? It was people like this who let Bush put our country through some bad times. Bush supporters used to scream unpatriotic when someone didn't agree; now the Obamamaniacs are displaying this same attitude. When you don't question what politicians are doing, then the politicians will do their jobs but also do what's best for them on the sly. Our govt should also be by consensus; some will alway disagree but we should all be able to question authority. This is part of helping as Obama needs to have more then one way of looking at things in order to get good solutions. It seems like the Obamamaniacs want things run like in Iran – no dissent allowed.

You will see what I am talking about, because the Obama administration has stated they will reveal the amount of funds spent during the Bush administration that was not OPENLY acknowleged.

I think each of us should take a deep breath and allow the president the opportunity to put his plans into motion. It seems that no one is willing to let him go forward with what I believe will turn our economy around. It is going to take time. It took over eight years to get us into this mess, and it will take more than a few months to get this stimulus kick-started and on its way. He has only been in office for 5 weeks. Give the man and his staff time. Correcting this economic mess is going to take all of us pulling together as Americans to get our country back on track.

Val   February 26th, 2009 3:40 pm ET

Why is that congressmen from the poorest southern states that get the most federal dollars complain the most about spending? Why is it that money that they get is good government and anything to help anyone else is irresponsible, big government, waste, etc. ? If everybody who wants everybody else to cut spending would be the first to step up to cut costs, the mess we're in will go away that much faster. But I don't expect this congressman or the Republican from Lousiana or the governor of South Carolina to turn down one cent. I expect them to wheel and deal to get even more.

Maybe Obama needs to take control of spending bills; rather then relying on Reid and Pelosi. They are going to make him a one term president.

Rick Sutter   February 26th, 2009 3:40 pm ET

How are you sheep going to pay for this? Many of you don't pay taxes now!

OK, I am an independent and have been for a long time. I DO NOT vote for anyone (with few exceptions) that has "incumbent" next to his or her name. BUT, come on Obama has to run up the debt to try and fix what the Republicans and Bush did. Obama DID NOT make this mess the Republicans made it and the Democrats have done NOTHING to try and fix it. ALL YOU REPUBLICANS can try and put the blame elsewhere but the majority of American know better. The conflict (only congress can declare a war) has cost us a fortune in money and a lot of lives yet ALL of America know Bush either lied or put such pressure on his intelligence heads (BUSH appointed them and yea if they did not do what he wanted – no more job – gee wonder why they did as he wanted and gave false information). Obama is NOT to blame BUSH and his RIch crony buddies are. All the Bank and Wallstreet crooks were and are Republicans. Go FIgure.

I am truly worried about America's future and the future my children will have. Washington is hell bent on destroying this country by selling our debt to foreign countries. Who is going to pay back the debt? And how on earth can we afford to? If all income over $75K was taxed 100%, it still wouldn't be enough to afford this budget. America, please stop drinking the Kool-Aid. Our survival and our children's survival depends on it.

Boston Irish   February 26th, 2009 3:38 pm ET

Angus McDugan, who is being racist? Simply because someone disagrees with the President does not make them a racist. I could use the same logic by saying anyone who voted for him is racist because they didn't vote for a white man. Neither remark is true. The only way it would be true is if you disagreed with him or voted for him simply because he is black. Now, that is racist!! Disagreeing is simply stating your opinion, which everyone is allowed to do.

How about we all slow down and THINK a bit! and not rely on "the economists"- according to Bernenke-we'll be out the recession by the end of 2009-AND THIS IS COMING FROM THE SAME MAN WHO SAID WE FINALLY WERE IN A RECESSION 1 YEAR TOO LATE.

The President cannot please everyone, looks like it's your day to be disappointed Mr. Taylor. Seriously folks, elections have consequences and America made one HUGE mistake last November in electing this rube. All we can hope for is for enough principled Democrats to realize what is going on and try to slow down this slow-motion slide into Hades! I'd honestly like to think Bam-bam has America's best interest at heart ... but you have to care for the country first and I doubt he gives a rat's rear for America or her people.

Even DEMS are now starting to see what a menance they have elected.

And to you liberal facists on this blog – yes, the so-called 'Blue-Dog' Democrats were mostly Republicans. For 2006 elections, Rahm Emanuel told these Blue Dogs to change to go Democrat but they would be respected for keeping true to their fiscally conservative beliefs.

Emanuel lied his *ss off. These 'Blue Dogs' are already sick to their stomachs for having to look at Nancy Pelosi and listed to Harry Reid, and after being BURNED by EMANUEL and OBAMA, they will ALL COME HOME TO THE RED.

Don't forget, Emanuel is the same guy that worked with Obama and Rezko to elect disgraced Rod BLAGO as govenor, and Rahm also dealt with Blago to sell Obama's senate seat and also his congressional 5th district seat. It is all on tape and there is nothing that NOBAMA can do stop stop this scandal from coming out. CAN"T WAIT!!

Lawrence Reiner   February 26th, 2009 3:36 pm ET

Rep. Taylor and Republicans still don't get it! There is a new wind blowing in this country. Its time to build the turbines to catch that wind. Those whose fore sight is blocked by their lack of hind sight should get out of the way. I am sick of hearing that there is too much spending. Thats a jingoistic cry that is out of line for anyone who is truley committed to working on ways to cure the country's ills. This is a plan we are going to use cure this country's sorry state. There is too much whining and not enough support. Stop being negative and start finding ways to cut wasteful spending. Like the F-22, attack submarines, and stealth ships.

This President brings a new perspective to Washington. A perspective that is so sorrly needed among the beltway crowd. Haven't any of the Republicans (except A. Spector and the enlightend Senators from Maine) learned anything from the last 8 years? The
Republican leadership has been pitifull in their same old partisan responce to new ideas.

For years the federal budget was for programs and services the Bush administration wanted. There were a great many of things that needed to be done that were not included in his budget.

Now the Obama administration has an opportunity to fund the things the Bush's did not. So transportation, education, health care and public safety are included in the current budget.

Pay now or later. We are at the later. How many more bridges must fall before we realize public safaey is too important too ignore?

At least we will be making the investments in this country for a change. We allowed a war and allowed the fat cats to rob this country blind and now we want to ask the american people to once again put healthcare and other programs on hold. I say let's move forward. Burying our heads in the sand won't stop the mounting debts of healthcare that we will continue to experience each year. We need to fix these problems now and not wait. And let's stop cursing our children. All this talk about leaving them a debt is saying that our children will be incapable of fixing this mess. We need to lift our children up because this is their future and I believe that they will be fully capable of handling any crisis that comes their way. We have to be careful about the things that we put out into this universe.

Q   February 26th, 2009 3:34 pm ET

It's so funny to hear about these "uncalled for" or "unjust" wars. There was not one single American who was against it back in 2004. All Americans were itching for payback as to what happend on our soil. Some people are just so short-minded they can't remember...

The difference between President Obama and former president Bush is that President Obama has a plan. As we speak, the Obama administration is going through each and every line of what we are currnetly spending money on to eliminate wasteful spending on programs that will save the country trillions of dollars.

As for Rep. Gene Taylor's comments, who admited that he hasn't read the entire purposal...all I can say is he's from Mississippi and trust me, Mississippi has not seen change since the 1950's.

DP   February 26th, 2009 3:33 pm ET

Obama's halving of the deficit within 4 years is a joke. Read his budget. 2009 – 1.5 trillion, 2010 – 1.1 trillion, 2011 – 1.03 trillion, 2012 – 757 billion, 2013 – 791 billion, 2014 – 811 billion, 2015 – 878 billion, 2016 – 893 billion, 2017 – 906 billion, and 2018 – 1.002 trillion. What he forgets to tell everyone is he is creating bloated budgets and leaving gaps that have to paid at a later date. In case you are wonder, George Bush had only a 459 billion deficit in 2008. Obama's smallest deficit in 2012 is almost twice of last years deficit. What happened to "Change" and controlling the spending? All of you democrats need to quit writing checks you cannot cash.

Len   February 26th, 2009 3:33 pm ET

President Obama is being truthful to all Americans. He put it all out there. He is not hiding anything, including the two wars. Bush did not put the budget, he just took money from Social Security, medicare and whatever else he could get his hands on.
I do not have a problem that those making $250,000 or more paying additional taxes, they basically got a free ride for the last eight years.

We have a president who is honest and has a plan. And don't you worry, this budget will be changed after all the law makers get their two cents worth.

Do you think those 65 million voters are equipped to take care of anything when they live in states that are recieving the majority of their tax money from the states that vote blue?

Are you serious?

WE are supporting YOU.

The greatest intellectual swindle the Republicans ever pulled off was convincing thier base that the government is taking money from THEM to give to minorities. It is to laugh. You DO realize that the majority of the money you get in the South and the Midwest comes from taxes collected on the COASTS, right?

I have nothing but pity and contempt for people who believe as you do. You've simply been hoodwinked, swindled, scammed, and lied to. And each and everyone one of you have swallowed that garbage hook line and sinker.

Give me a break with "generational theft." Debt is inherent in both the capitalist system and government in general. We must use more debt now to generate economic activity but lessen it when the economy inproves, as stipulated by the original Keynesian doctrine which helped get us out of the Great Depression.

We went into Afganastan because they were harbouring the terrorists who brought down the World Trade Center and destroyed part of the Pentagon and killed a bunch of Americans in the process.

We went into Iraq because Sadam would not let weapons inspectors in to verify he was not producing biological and chemical weapons again...note the "again" part since he had a track record of using them and using them on his own people. If Sadam had simply let the weapons inspectors in there would not have been any doubt about the intelligence that said they had them which is exactly what he (Sadam) wanted everyone to think.

Let the next generation set the agenda for our future..the previous has us in this situation and it will take the next to get us headed in the right direction…no politician elected over 50…

I agree – over 50 have the same ideas!

ray   February 26th, 2009 3:24 pm ET

Agree with Gene Taylor – This is just the beginning, Obama will put us in an even bigger hole. His programs are will never work. Just spend, spend and spend. The only positive hope is that Obama will only have one term, but by then the US will run out of money. When he gets close to running up the debt even higher – he will then start taxing the American people making 200,000 then 150,000, then 100,000 until he gets down to $50,000 maybe even lower.

I have to give him credit – he is a good preacher – maybe he belongs in a southern church – not president. – wake up America

Mel of Alexandria, Virginia   February 26th, 2009 3:24 pm ET

This was expected. The Democrats can never walk in lock step like the Republicans do. The President will have to fight some of the members of his own party as well so as to do what is right for the most of the people. The government of the people will have to be relied upon to push through the necessary legislation and budget, because some of these representatives do not make sense. When the circumstances are abnormal we cannot expect that the old ways of turning things around will do.

Jerky Jackie   February 26th, 2009 3:24 pm ET

Sometimes, when I go shopping for groceries, I buy bulk....although I am not going to eat all the food today, I know that in the long run it is cheaper to do so....even though I can feed myself at the local diner for under $5.00 per meal (or less than $15.00 per day) I can make the very same meal for pennies on the dollar when I buy in bulk....albeit I have to make a lot of the dish and my daily food variety is a little mundane.

I understand exactly what Obama is doing.... though the cost of a thorough and complete grocery list is far greater than that one serving $5.00 meal, our cupboards will finally be stocked.

Is this a hard concept for Americans?? If so, that alone illustrates the greater need for education funding....

Helen   February 26th, 2009 3:24 pm ET

Why doesn't this man who I have never ever heard of go take a hike. If he doesn't have anything constructive or positive to say he needs to shut up. It took the economy 8 years to get into this mess it will not be fixed in 50 days. Instead of grumbling and complaining saying what is not going to work, why don't those that think that they have the solution stop dividing and speak up with positive feedback and stop trying to tear down what is trying to be done. Nothing will work if we all sit around point fingers and hope that soemone else idea fail so that we can say "I knew it wouldn't work". The ideas want work if we all keep working against each other rather than with each other. The elected offficals(some of them)in Washington are not worried about the people who are loosing homes and jobs they have their mansions and jobs secure, they want to see how much more havoc they can raise. Start taking some their pay, homes and let them loose the life style that they are accustom to and see how fast they will find a way to fix things.

The man is in the zone and has the heart of the tinman , the brain of the scarecrow and the courage of the lion. God Bless all of you out there that Obama has especially touched and you know who you are!! God Bless our Big Beautiful Country and Thank You CNN.

This is crazy. He said he would change things around. He said he would stop a lot of this crazy spending. Now we're back at where we started. He is spending and the American people are letting him. His excuse is for change. Racking up a bigger deficit and trying to justify it by claiming it will create more jobs. Let's all move to North Dakota where there is a surplus.

Clark-Iowa   February 26th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

I think republicans need to take a step back. After all, the last eight years were lead by an incompetent, terrible president who didn't care about helping America at home; and giving his buddies tax-breaks. Maybe you should give Barack a chance at leading us out of this recession (which he will), and give us our eight years back

Marcelo   February 26th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

So first he kvetches about the deficit running up, and in the next sentence he complains we are barely increasing military spending? Is the right side of his brain talking to the left, or has the stroke fully set in already?

And for those saying that Bush only added 5 trillion – how about you start counting all the things Bush left off the budget and hid under the rug under emergency spending bills, like his needless war?

Now you can blame Dems in Congress, You can blame Republicans.

The fact is Barack the idiot could have spent money on that but instead he bought condoms. He is a moron and does not deserve any respect. HE IS A NAIVE BOY and talked all you people into voting for him. You like to vote for popular. The next guy you people will vote for will be George Clooney. I think he is a great looking guy but that does not make him presidential material. But you will vote for him because he is cute, or talks so sweet in your ear. Grow up.

What exactly are you going to do to help your neighbor?

-Shout at them and call them losers because they lost their mortgage and you still have yours?

-Are you going to throw rocks at workers hired for stimulus projects while shouting 'pork'?

Maybe you just need to admit your failures...
Your conservative policies have failed America. Admit it and move on.

Spending makes sense if you spend on the right things. Just because spending money to kill people in Iraq was wrong does not make spending on the infrastructure of this country wrong as well. People use your brains and stop with your partisan bs.

Okay lets try this again. Lets say our country is a big ship.As it stands right now it has many holes in it and she's beginning to sink .Now can someone please tell me why it is unwise to put money into fixing the ship. Oh yeah and please don't use the last eight or so as a example because WE all know where they were putting money.

Wait a minute Dems did Bush spend too much or not enough??? Obama has control over this budgest he is chosing to add more to the national debt than Bush every did in a single year. Bush 5 trillion in 8 years Obama 1.75 trillion in one year! You do the math!

Barney Frank should be hung out to dry for letting his buddies at Fannie and Freddie get away with so much.

Gerry M, Eugene, OR   February 26th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Democratic Rep. Gene Taylor needs to get with the program. We don't need additional carping from the sidelines. What we need is cooperation from the Congress to get by this tough economic time. The Rep. needs to let go of his over inflated ego and think about what is good for the nation, and not what is good for his political resume. I'm pretty disgusted with these pols who think they know better and they have a better understand. Where have they been during the 8 years of the Bush administration where the economy was driven into chaos.

Paul Ohio   February 26th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

First, Jason. Its accept, not except, but thank you for the input. This budget and stimulus is nothing short of generational theft and the young paying for debts of our elders. I can not wait for taxes to increase on the people who worked hard in school, have student loans, pay their bills, and are responsible with their money. If you take from John to give to Jack and Jill, you will always have the support of Jack and Jill. The cycle continues.

Doug   February 26th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Finally someone stands up who is paying attention to the facts. I am an O democrat who wants the discussion to take place. The tea party is starting in the states and will get to washington by 2010. The money has become limitless by this budget and they say that everyone who voted has already endorsed this concept. I don't think so and government should not follow this phony judgement call to save the country.

Bubba Nicholson   February 26th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

The federal stimulus is not a stimulus at all, it's just a catch up on a lot of things that the government should have already spent money on.

The reason we are in this pickle is because the government has been too parsimonious for the past 40 years. We have infrastructure we need to maintain, but we also have infrastructure that we have needed to build! We have freight trains, but we need rapid rail. The reason our infrastructure fails is because we overspend on personal transportation vehicles. Our cars are ten times bigger and heavier than necessary for comfortable travel, that means our bridges and tunnels have to be that much bigger, too.
Most places in the USA have no public transportation at all and it is a disgraceful waste.
But because of our national strength, the rest of the world leans on us. We need to provide them with the hard currency they need to facilitate international commerce. We haven't been doing that. In this crisis, we must buy up weak foreign currency with ours in exchange. We should purchase commodities from weak economies, too, to give them the hard curency they need. The demand for US currency/money is there, and we need to fill it.

Here, we're now able to replace buses with over 500,000 miles. We've been buying used buses for years.

Economy was fine until the Dems took over congress. Now i think i am going to have to quit my job so i can recieve the government benifits and bailouts that my neighbor will receive. Heck he has a better house than me but hasnt worked in years. He gets food stamps and free health care and now Obama is going to give him the house he cant afford. He hasnt worked in years and he is doing better than me!!!!! Well now you can just pay for me too.

Bob   February 26th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

As one who lives in a "military community" and who has worked for the military as a civilian, I recognize that I run the risk of being accused of blasphemy when I say that I am pleased to see that no more than a minimal increase for the military is reported to be included in Obama's budget. While our service men and women certainly deserve the best our country can provide to them in terms of pay, promised benefits, and health care, the Pentagon has got to be the most bloated, wasteful, corrupt entity in government. And there's already plenty of those with which it can compete.

****************************************************
Unfortunately, the economic picture today is not the same as it was when Bush began his spending spree while simultaneously cutting taxes on the rich.

The Enron-like accounting, caused by leaving the costs of Iraq off the budget, and by overstating the revenue stream by including tax revenue that they had no intention of collecting, made the budget picture looke rosier.

We have to live with the economy we have now. Obama's approach may not fix everything, but I have yet to hear any approach that is guaranteed to work better.

Craig Nazor   February 26th, 2009 3:16 pm ET

One of the reasons this country is in so much trouble now is that so many problems were ignored or underfunded for the past eight years – "No child left behind" has not worked, not only because it is flawed, but also because it wasn't funded properly. Our energy policy is a mess because Bush ignored global warming (after promising to address the problem in his 1999 campaign speeches), which means at this late date, it will be even much, much more costly to address. Bush also all but ignored the growing crises in health care, providing bandages instead of the major surgery it needed, largely to please the big health care corporations. And then Bush put an unnecessary war on a credit card, and gave tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans.

Obama's approach IS change. He is being honest, and he is addressing the problems. That fact that it will cost a lot of money is because the former administration had its HEAD IN THE SAND for eight years, and that head placement comment is being very, very charitable!

PAM TAPLIN.

TIme for what. Time to spend 1.75 Trillion the first year.

Time to spend 1.,75 the second year.

You people love to complain about President Bush bankrupting America and getting us in trouble.

We are out of money. We are broke. He had the chance to spend it on infrastructure or Mortgages as he promised, but instead he spent it on crap. Things that should have been in the general budget.

He HAD his chance. He BLEW it. HE let Nancy Pelosi write his bill.

He FAILED out of the shoot within 45 days. HE IS A FAILURE AS A LEADER. YOU PEOPLE BOUGHT INTO SMOKE AND MIRRORS. YOU BOUGHT INTO THE RHETORIC.

President Bush was a terrible financial conservative. He failed us and did not keep track of his budget. He spent too much money.

BARACK is WORSE. WORSE because his best IDEA is to cut DEFICIT spending by his fourth year to 550 BILLION.

That means that he is spending more than he takes in EVERY year for 4 years while adding AS much or more to the NATIONAL DEBT, than President BUSH did in 8 years.

THAT IS WORSE by any math.

Mike   February 26th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

No....are you forgetting there are 65 million voters who did not vote for this man. That there are 65 million people who will not stand by and watch him drive our country into the ground.

That there are 65 million voters who do not believe socialism is the answer.

That there are 65 million voters who will not work their butts off to take care of the other 70 million voters.

Do you really just expect us to sit back and watch this man single handily destroy everything that is good about America?

I find it hilarious that these libs are surprised that their party is running up a big deficit. That is what your party does! Of course the deficit is going to increase!

BTW- Shouldnt this congressman be talking to his Governor HAley Barbor about why he is rejecting the stimulus $$??
Seems Mr TAylor is mad at the wrong guy!

This time around , the cuts are going to hurt across the board.
Its time for sacrifice. Expect all interest groups to be ticked off.

Deficit reduction means things get cut...across the board. That means social programs, military, tax loopholes, tax cuts for the wealthy.
Its all fair game. And the defenders of their programs on the chopping block are going to whine and have tantrums big time.

So the fact that parties are unhappy with the budget cuts is just something you have to deal with. No one will ever be happy about a budget.
But I am sure CNN (Contrarian News Network) will find some way of blaimng OBama to facing up to our realities which we all ignored for a decade.

This is suppose to be change??? It seems like more of the same.
Say we're not for big govt, then announce the largest spending and growing of the govt ever in the world.
Say we're not for bailing out unscrupulous investestor on wall street. Then bail them out. the Remember "Bush is bailout Wallstreet instead of Main street" diatribe?).
Say instead of spending $10billion in Iraq it should be spent here. But then instead spend it in Afghanistan.
Say we are for bipartisanship, but deny the other a voice, or ability to offer up and debate on the issues.
Obama says one thing but does the other. I guess that's the "CHANGE" we voted for.

Brad   February 26th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

How come it is so difficult to understand? Bush's budgets didn't include the wars, he started with a surplus, and he wasn't trying to inject capital into the market so the country's economy wouldn't collapse.
Even without the economic issues I would have been surprised if the budget wasn't larger simply due to the inclusion of the war in the budget and the fact that there is no surplus to start with.
Glad they finally found their voice, but where were these 'fiscal conservatives' the last 8 years?

Jim in Texas   February 26th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

Mr. Taylor is right! The president is a "fraud", plain and simple........he says one thing and does another, this is not change it is more of the same if not worst. I am a big time supporter of President Obama and I believe he is the right guy to be leading our country.

However, the amount that Obama wants to spend is ridiculous. Lets focus on a few things first. There is no reason to be spending this much money when the company is in so much debt.

Lets first bring down the National debt and then begin all of these programs. I thought Obama would be smarter than this. He is totally leaving himself open to being slammed by the people that elected him.

I know that many of the programs in his budget were part of his campain promises, but I think Americans want fiscal responsibility at the same time. I think Americans were on board with the last stimulous plan but this no budget makes no sense.

(Not to mention the de-regulation pushed by the Bush Administration, which just fueled the fire.)

The U.S. government is the only entity large enough to help dig our country of of this hole.

Yes, Obama is proposing spending that will in the short term increase our deficit. But in the long run, we'll get infrastructure, a new green, sustainable economy and less dependence on foreign energy.

The President wants America to start making sacrifices, how about the government?! I'm sure America would be more than happy to sacrific but not when our government isn't doing the same!!!! Wake up America, its the same old politics, just a different leader!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Angus McDugan   February 26th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

Racist!

Q   February 26th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

WOW...a Democrat speaking out against Obama? So, somebody finally sees what is going on here...spend spend spend...

More of the same...

bebo   February 26th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

So which one is it A. apparently b. he is or C. you're not sure? Which one is it?

Simmy   February 26th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

A Blue Dog Democrat is a Republican in drag. You will be replaced.

Maggie from Virginia   February 26th, 2009 3:02 pm ET

Mississippi Democrat... Enough said.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   February 26th, 2009 3:02 pm ET

Funny, the GOP rubber-stamped every budget fearless, Jet-Pilot put before them and helped bankrupt the country!!!

Now, they're blocking any attempt to fix it!!!

Remember this in 2010, people, remember it good!!!!!!!

Rachel   February 26th, 2009 3:02 pm ET

The problem is exactly what Obama said it was, there was a lot of money off the books during the Bush years. The budget they have is probably a reduced budget in comparison to the "true" amount of money that Bush was spending.

Also, if Taylor is so concerned about the budget, then perhaps Mississippi should decline any money from the federal budget or stimulus!

Jason, Los Angeles   February 26th, 2009 3:02 pm ET

I think Obama's got it right. We can't be so short sighted right now. It seems to me that as long as deficit goes down, spending isn't the issue.

Marcia, Marcia, Marcia in CA   February 26th, 2009 3:02 pm ET

You need to back your president like YOU backed Bush. You are the reason the deficit is so high, NOT President Obama.

FedUp   February 26th, 2009 3:02 pm ET

The Governor from Mississippi appears to be as impulsive in reacting as the most misinformed citizen. Anyone with a bit of sense could see that the deficit was going to be larger, based on what the government has had to infuse into the system to kick-start it. If it were that quick and easy to sort out this mess, we wouldn't have been in it in the first place (don't you forget, "the fundamentals of the economy" were in good shape last year – sarcasm! according to our dear expresident!!) I can't for the life of me understand how people expect the economy to magically start churning again without the infusion of capital and with it confidence. Gone are the days of living on love and fresh air, which is apparently what some in government appear to think is the solution. What is up with these governors in the south of the country...disturbing!! Everyone criticizes...has anyone come up with a solution that works yet...no...then zip it and try to be part of the solution!!!

Chris   February 26th, 2009 3:01 pm ET

Hopefully Congress and President Obama can start getting this deficit under control. Our national deficit is 11 trillion dollars! If it gets too much larger we will never be able to repay it....ever....

Cynthia - Arkansas   February 26th, 2009 3:00 pm ET

Do they want a budget that has all the big ticket items hidden. Will that make them "feel" better. That's been the problem for the last 8 years. Sticker shock, yea. We have just never seen the true cost before.

President Obama is doing the very best that he and his administration can do to hold this country together. All of these people need to stop complaining and start helping.

Michael   February 26th, 2009 3:00 pm ET

Obama is a far left spending liberial. Little by little Democrats will turn against the irresponsible big government spending being pushed by Obama.

How can he take jabs at the deficit he inherited and then triple it on purpose? Who thinks that is OK or is anywhere near rational?

All Americans, Democrats and Republicans, moderates and conservates alike should rise up and call for a stop to this now. I do not call on liberals because they think this is good and are to stupid to ever think otherwise.

Obama Victim   February 26th, 2009 3:00 pm ET

Obummer is going to make W look like Thomas Jefferson..................what a loser he is

Sniffit   February 26th, 2009 3:00 pm ET

As long as he doesn't start saying "tax cuts," he'll be fine.

Virginia   February 26th, 2009 3:00 pm ET

And here I thought that Michelle and Barack were advocates of our service members' families–how can that be when the new budget outline barely covers a cost of living adjustment for our service members as quoted here:

"As a member of the Armed Service Committee, Taylor noted the budget only gives the Defense Department a “small increase,” which he said would barely cover the cost of living adjustments for the military."

We can't keep doing this, but we knew this would happen–all I can say is "Don't blame me, I voted for the other guy!"

Deborah   February 26th, 2009 3:00 pm ET

We didn't need Obama to proclaim

"make sacrifices"

We already are and have been.....

What part of WE ARE BROKE

Doesn't this Administration understand?????????

dejah   February 26th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

This guy smells like a Rethug. He may be part of the problem instead of being part of the solution.

Anonymous   February 26th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

These Are the reasons why i refuse to vote for people running for office who were in these political circles when my parents where young ( now 78 and 83 ) i will only from now on vote only the future next generation into office...
Let the next generation set the agenda for our future..the previous has us in this situation and it will take the next to get us headed in the right direction...no politician elected over 50...

Robert   February 26th, 2009 2:58 pm ET

Ok, what's your idea? If you don't have one, keep your trap shut.

tom   February 26th, 2009 2:57 pm ET

He is a white man from Missippi.

I guess not all dems are bad!!!

Go The GOPers   February 26th, 2009 2:56 pm ET

This guy will have the political lifespan of a gnat.

Of course he has to challenge President Obama because he's from the south. His state voted for McCain.

proud american   February 26th, 2009 2:56 pm ET

Gene Taylor is a Democrat in Name Only. He comes from one of the most conservative districts in the nation, in Mississippi.

He is one of the handful of Democrats who voted to impeach Bill Clinton.

Come on, CNN, do your homework and stop writing misleading headlines!

liz   February 26th, 2009 2:55 pm ET

So he hasn't read it yet?!?! So really what you are saying is this guy is a Republican?

KC   February 26th, 2009 2:54 pm ET

...but Obama does it faster and with more gusto....don't you think?

Concerned in MA   February 26th, 2009 2:54 pm ET

Let the infighting begin.

please   February 26th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

What Mr. Taylor forgot to mention is Bush racked up deficits going to war with/ fixing Iraq. Obama is trying to spend money here, to create jobs here, to help people here, replaced the infrastructure here, help the schools here.... Big difference.

njborne   February 26th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

He's from the South and the South political machine is deafening with opposition to President Obama's plans to renew America.

truthsayer   February 26th, 2009 2:52 pm ET

Well we know a blue dog is really a conservative in sheeps clothing....
and the fact he is from Mississippi says a lot about his mentality
