(CNN) – "We now have a president who's going to put science at the heart of our environmental policies and decisions," Michelle Obama said to a cheering crowd of employees at the Environmental Protection Agency Thursday. "It's a new day."

Mrs. Obama spoke to roughly 1,000 EPA staffers, her latest stop in a series of visits to government agencies, thanking employees for their work and assuring them that they have "unwavering support from a phenomenal president."

"This new era puts the EPA at the center of President Obama's highest priorities, securing America's energy independence and securing the future of our planet by combating climate change," the first lady said.

The EPA is an agency whose mission is particularly close to Obama's heart: public health. "I've often spoken about my most important job - being a mom, and like mothers and fathers everywhere, the health and safety of our children is our top priority," she said. "This is what it is all about - the future."

The first lady touted environmental spending in the president's stimulus plan which designates 10.5 billion dollars to the EPA to "continue to clean up our communities and improve the health of our fellow Americans." The boost in environmental spending is nearly 50 percent higher than President Bush asked for in 2008, and includes funds designated to improve sewage treatment plants, drinking water systems and to protect waterways.

The first lady maintained the president will "champion bold policies and make smart investments" like create more energy efficient buildings, Obama said as the crowd roared.

"See now that's exciting, you know you're at the EPA."

Saw an interesting note; if Jesus had spent a million, every day since his birth…until now…it still wouldn't match what Obama's committed to spending in less than a month ..........

jajajaaa .. that came out on The Daily Show !!! oooohh very interesting note.

Anyone who doesn't believe we live in a sexist society just needs to read these comments!

My opinion – Michelle Obama is a great person, and doing a great job, and the EPA needs this money and this moral support to address the growing environmental problems that this country and this world faces.

Other than those paid by Exxon/Mobil, I am dying to hear the names of all the "scientists" who claim the earth is cooling.
    Yeah, that's what I thought.

A new report just came out stating that Antarctica is melting faster than previously believed. What will be the final piece of evidence to make these nutball wingers take their head out of the sand? When it's 130 degrees in the shade, and too late to do anything about it?

It is so tiresome to see this nonsense talking point spouted over and over. Almost as stupid as developing a sudden concern about "the deficit" when it was your Republican president who squandered all the budget surplus on a pipedream war.

Thumbs up To all of the Positive people blogging today – I agree with your uplifting remarks! Thumbs down To Valerie, Steve, and the other unhappy people. Put on a happy face. Life is too short to be so negative. They're going to be around for eight years – get used to them. God bless

Does Michelle REALLY care about ALL the children in America?

Her comments in her Princeton thesis sure tell otherwise.

I would hope she had a change of heart, but since she has had her children indoctrinated in Rev. Wright's church of hate, it doesn't seem so likely.

After all hate is a big part of a Democrats existance, just read the ticker. Hate to a lib is like truth and facts to a conservative. What you live by.

All you Dems critisizing Bush for doubling the deficit remember this: it took him 8 years to double the deficit. Obama has spent as much as money as being 14 years in Iraq, with one stroke of a pen. After 8 years (God help us) of his presidency, the Bush adminstration spending will look like a trip to the fiveand dime store. And again, Michelle you were not elected to anything, now go be a mom to your kids

  14. arithmetic is liberal

Every time the Republicans get voted into power based on "government doesn't work" they spend their entire tenure trying to prove that to be so.

It's nice that we finally have an administration that believes in science instead of mysticism.

When is someone going to give this woman a cheerleading uniform and pom poms!! Good grief, she likes the camera as much as her husband, and I frankly am tired of seeing both of them every time I open the paper or go online!! Rah, Rah, Ree-Rah, Rah, Ras.....

Why do people like you keep doing this?! Our children's future has already been spent by Bush and his Administration on this wasted ware in Iraq! Why didn't you speak up these past years against this debt then Deborah? Obama's only been in the WH a month, Bush had eight years to squander away a budget surplus and THEN turned it into a deficit that has ALREADY bankrupted our children's future! So give it a rest okay?
    -------------------------------–
Actually, it is people like you who are ignorant to the fact that we will never recover from this stimulus bill. It is a waste and will not create the jobs it promises. Facts are facts...

Iraq & Afghanistan were not "wasted wars" back in 2004 when the majority of Americans & Congress approved them. I don't remember any of you Democrats saying we should not attack! Oh yeah...there's a dose of reality for you...

if you really want a debate, stick to facts. Don't stoop to insults (including negative connotations for republican, democrat, liberal, conservative, etc.) and personal attacks on people's intellect. It doesn't help your case.
