Laura Bush dishes on life post-presidency

Former first lady Laura Bush said she and her husband are back to their old routine in Dallas, Texas.
Former first lady Laura Bush said she and her husband are back to their old routine in Dallas, Texas.

(CNN) –- Just over a month since they left 1600 Pennsylvania Ave for a quiet Dallas neighborhood, former first lady Laura Bush said she and her husband are “back to our old routine.”

In her first post-White House interview, the former first lady told ABC News that she and former President George W. Bush were enjoying coffee together every morning, holding dinner parties with friends, and dealing with the hunt for furniture. “Life is great,” she said.

"We have very little furniture. We don't have a kitchen table or a dining room table," said Bush. "Friends loaned me a kitchen table, and the other night I had 16 people for dinner, and I had to borrow chairs from the Secret Service next door.”

Laura Bush says her husband is meeting the neighbors, making trips to the hardware store, and catching up on some reading via a Kindle. His latest read is a novel given to him for Christmas by former Vice President Dick Cheney.

And while Laura Bush lived and breathed politics for the last eight years, the former first lady said she did not watch President Obama's first address to Congress because she simply forgot.

"I thought it was so ironic that for eight years I would be a nervous wreck before the State of the Union, and for days before, as George would be preparing his speech, worried about it and thinking about what was going to be in the speech," Bush said. “And this time it came and went and I didn't even think about it."

The first lady, an ardent champion of Afghan women's rights while in the White House, also said she was worried that people “will wash their hands of Afghanistan, and I think it'd be a terrible mistake."

The only way to move on is to right the wrongs done by the previous administration. Are you stating that you wish them to get away with the crimes they have committed? If someone breaks into your house and shoots your loved one, are you just going to bury them and "move on?" I think a little justice is in order. Justice for people who have denied justice.

Please leave these people alone. You Dems have dogged them out enough. Have your good time now because if Obama does not do everything perfectly it will be the repubs turn and he will surely be dogged out well. There will be a point in time that you can not blame Bush anymore.

For those of you that voted for the Democratic president, in 4 years please tell us how you feel when half your paycheck if you are employed is taken for taxes, when you are told where you can get medical services and when you can receive them, and you wake you and realize that this country is now headed toward socialism in the greatest sense of the word. The govt now owns almost 40% of citibank, the education secretary is looking at our children attending school for longer times, and you all believe that President Bush is totally responsible for the mess we are in. What about all the liberal spending of the Clinton administration and the Democratic controlled Congress the last couple of years of Bush's administration. At least the world knew not to mess with the U. S. and I'm not sure they feel the same with the new president. God bless George W. and Laura Bush and may this country survive until 2012 and elect a new president.

Change is coming Obama! We need a leader…
Wow TCM you are starting to sound a little Timmoty McVeyish. And we all know how he ended up. You must admitt that Bush stunk up the office. If he did not do so bad we would not have Obama so you should thank him for that. If Obama is all the things you say he is how did he out smart, out manuver, and out think all of your nice white heros? If he is sub par your guys must be sub sub par. Stick that in you pipe and smoke it.

To John: "I completely agree with you Greg, 100% . Only the undecuated people that gripe about how life wasn't handed to them complain about the last 8 years, maybe if people took the time to bust their butts to get an education, like I have while working, then maybe you wouldn't feel you need a socialist/marxist president."

Really, John? Are you that ignorant? I mean you can't spell uneducated. You must really have no contact with the working poor that I see everyday. They work 2-3 jobs with no health insurance. Kids working to support their families. No family-sustaining wages. A sick day is catastrophic. People don't want everything handed to them but they want a chance to get ahead. Bush didn't care at all about these people. Obama was one of these people. He lived and worked with these people. He cares about all people.

Businesses need to invest in their their enterprises to grow. Countries need to invest in their people.

You obviously don't know what Marxism/Socialism is. I suggest that you read a few books. If you truly understood these ideologies, you wouldn't be so semantically challenged.

Personally I'm tired of people who say they have earned what they have but yet are so reluctant to see others have a chance to attain it. That's the fundamental difference between you, John and Obama supporters. We believe every person in this country matters and should have the equal chance you have to earn success like you have. If you were around the urban community where I live, you would know that under Bush, so many chances were shut off. Republicans want to close the door on those not in their circle.

    Really John. Get a clue!

"Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first." –Mark Twain

Blame fixes nothing. What are you doing, or not doing? Pointing a finger doesn't fix a problem, it exaggerates it. And attacking a person only shows your character, not theirs.

Under 1 month of Obama, not so much better off. In fact, no raise this year and lost 30% of retirement income. This country is in for a world of hurt the next four years.

Sorry to break it to you bonehead, that happened before Obama was in office.

I live in Dallas and went to see the 2.1 million dollar ranch home in Highland Park. It is a joke and the neighborhood is old and has cracks in the road. The secret service live in a 1.3 million ranchhome that we , the tax payers ,are paying for. What on earth was Laura thinking when she bought this house. It is a tear down that needs rebuilt. Only the land is valuable. I am sure now that she made the comment of having no furniture, the bush lovers will come to their rescue. Maybe they can hit some estate sales in Dallas.

I think that W will have a difficult time raising 300M for his Library. Who will donate that kind of $$ when we are trying to keep our homes from forecloser. The people in Dallas are not very fond of him lliving here.

If I ever see him in Dallas, I may throw up my finger at him.
If the rest of the world was watching the State of the Union address, why were the Bush's not watching. Something is very wrong. He never even watched his own movies, the W and Farenheight 911. I guess the nighmare would cause sleepless nights in Dallas.

Thank goodness he is not our President any more.

Why don't dumb W hop in his pickup truck and go to Aaron's rent all? I am sure there is one in Dallas somewhere. I am sure they rent him some stuff to tie him over until Mother Bush buys some new stuff. In the meantime the milk crates have to do. LOL

OK, Laura, you're so concerned about Afghanistan, how about you send both your daughters and son-in-law right down to sign on the BIg Green Weenie line aka Army?? Then they too could go downrange and risk death or being maimed. I have no use for either of the Bushes – they are clueless to the havoc they've wrecked on the thousands of catastrophically maimed Soldiers and Marines I've seen. Good riddance.

Why can't people leave them alone... I have never heard/seen people so mean and rude as I did when Bush was in office (I mean it was his fault if somebody died in anybody's family....) If he had not did anything after 9-11 people would have called him a coward etc... (and by the way he did not go to war on his own –other people had to agree)

It just seems that he couldn't win and now with Obama it seems like he can do no wrong!!! People are blind when it comes to him. Like after June 09 you have to have some kind of label on your ammo and anything prior to this you have to destroy!!!! I'm sorry people wake up he is not perfect (and neither is anybody else)

He is sort of like Hitler .. I mean if you would stop and think with him we are loosing rights and this is only the beginning... As far as the longer school days or school years how would they have liked it if they had to go year round???? I don't think the Obama's like their daughters as much as it seems ( he threw a fit when school was cancelled telling people to toughen up!!!! Maybe he wants his kids to slid across the road and get killed or be paralyzed like my father in law is from an auto accident..

WAKE UP PEOPLE YOU WILL FIGURE OBAMA AND HIS PEOPLE OUT WHEN IT IS TOOOOO LATE!!!!!

In 6 to 12 months all you whiners will look back and wish someone like G. Bush was president. Look at whats already mhappening in the congress and with the cabinet picks. We're in for a long 4 years of great speeches with no meat in them. Watch and see......the good ol' days will be alot better without Obama, with our speaker of the house, and Mr. Biden............
