Laura Bush dishes on life post-presidency

Former first lady Laura Bush said she and her husband are back to their old routine in Dallas, Texas.

Former first lady Laura Bush said she and her husband are back to their old routine in Dallas, Texas.

(CNN) –- Just over a month since they left 1600 Pennsylvania Ave for a quiet Dallas neighborhood, former first lady Laura Bush said she and her husband are “back to our old routine.”

In her first post-White House interview, the former first lady told ABC News that she and former President George W. Bush were enjoying coffee together every morning, holding dinner parties with friends, and dealing with the hunt for furniture. “Life is great,” she said.

"We have very little furniture. We don't have a kitchen table or a dining room table," said Bush. "Friends loaned me a kitchen table, and the other night I had 16 people for dinner, and I had to borrow chairs from the Secret Service next door.”

Laura Bush says her husband is meeting the neighbors, making trips to the hardware store, and catching up on some reading via a Kindle. His latest read is a novel given to him for Christmas by former Vice President Dick Cheney.

And while Laura Bush lived and breathed politics for the last eight years, the former first lady said she did not watch President Obama's first address to Congress because she simply forgot.

"I thought it was so ironic that for eight years I would be a nervous wreck before the State of the Union, and for days before, as George would be preparing his speech, worried about it and thinking about what was going to be in the speech," Bush said. “And this time it came and went and I didn't even think about it."

The first lady, an ardent champion of Afghan women's rights while in the White House, also said she was worried that people “will wash their hands of Afghanistan, and I think it'd be a terrible mistake."

They should borrow some furniture from McCain’s one of the seven houses.

It will take time to come out of Style, Aristocracy and Luxury.

Dick Cheney gave Bush a book about hunting Quails.

Bush actually needs a book to enhance his IQ.

I'll wager Laura Bush has always been proud of her country… unlike the she-boon.

I'll wager that the "she-boon" never killed anyone either.

Now that Bush has plenty of time on his hands, maybe he can do the military service he obviously NEVER did in Alabama. NO ONE has been able to prove he ever ACTUALLY did his duty in the state of Alabama.

donna, take a breath and look up socialism. You people keep screaming socialism and clearly don't have a clue as to what it means.
One thing is for sure..... no body could possibly wreck this country as much as the Bush administration did. That idiot George had 8 years to do the right thing and he just kept getting it wrong. Now you're already throwing stones and haven't even given Obama a few months. Very open minded and big of you.

    Irregardless is not a word.

Definition of regardless – in spite of, without regard for.

I know of 6 people who became unemployed today. They are fearful. They are wondering how they will be able to put food on their table and the Bush's are wondering how they will be able to entertain since they need a bigger table and more chairs. Sad.

Wow, a story about life after the White House and it draws political fire from idiots.

When Michelle does the same interview four years from now I'm sure others will be more polite. You don't diss a wife because of her husband! Did you know she leans more Democrat than a lot of elected Democrats. Just look at the abortion issue for one example.

People, the country is in trouble, not because of Bush and not because of Obama but because you people who don't seem to have the ability to think. We are in control of the destiny of this country and we don't reach our potential through ANY elected official!!

The Afghan and African women won't forget you...you did alot of advocacy for them....

Former Pres. Bush must be reflecting on the deception he had placed before him...hopefully....fourtunately.. God is always full of mercy and is forgiving for that he should be thankful each day.

Mr. President, if you had caught Osama bin Laden yesterday, would you be sending 17,000 more troops to Afghanistan? It may not be the most important thing in the world to catch bin Laden. There is more than one kind of warfare. Osama used USA planes to take down the World Trade Center. Pretty smart if you look at it from a point of view that everything is fair in war. But is bin Laden being much smarter now by sucking the USA into a black hole in Afghanistan? Generals are somewhat like football players: they know how to run the same plays that they learn in high school and nothing more. If my street finder can direct my car to any location, and if you can find a cell phone in a jungle, and with all of our satellites, technology, our missile systems, our bombers and our Navy—why should we ever go on a war mission that we can’t get back home in time for dinner with the family? Mr. President, don’t get bogged down in Afghanistan like President Johnson did in Vietnam and miss a great opportunity to make America a great place for everyone. Anyway you would be more likely to find Osama in Saudi Arabia than in Afghanistan or Pakistan.

Uh, did somebody clue Raymond in as to what FLOTUS stands for? He is asking if she made a speech to herself. Not only is his comment sexist (just because your HUSBAND is President, you as the FLOTUS (first lady of the United States) have a role to play as well.

    @wall st

Your comments lead me to believe that none of your relatives, friends or neighbors has lost their lives in the Iraq War. How else can you make it seem as though the lives lost are insignificant by discounting Dave's justifiable anger at the deception of the administration that initiated the war? It's obvious that you're still out of touch with main street.
