(CNN) –- Just over a month since they left 1600 Pennsylvania Ave for a quiet Dallas neighborhood, former first lady Laura Bush said she and her husband are “back to our old routine.”
In her first post-White House interview, the former first lady told ABC News that she and former President George W. Bush were enjoying coffee together every morning, holding dinner parties with friends, and dealing with the hunt for furniture. “Life is great,” she said.
"We have very little furniture. We don't have a kitchen table or a dining room table," said Bush. "Friends loaned me a kitchen table, and the other night I had 16 people for dinner, and I had to borrow chairs from the Secret Service next door.”
Laura Bush says her husband is meeting the neighbors, making trips to the hardware store, and catching up on some reading via a Kindle. His latest read is a novel given to him for Christmas by former Vice President Dick Cheney.
And while Laura Bush lived and breathed politics for the last eight years, the former first lady said she did not watch President Obama's first address to Congress because she simply forgot.
"I thought it was so ironic that for eight years I would be a nervous wreck before the State of the Union, and for days before, as George would be preparing his speech, worried about it and thinking about what was going to be in the speech," Bush said. “And this time it came and went and I didn't even think about it."
The first lady, an ardent champion of Afghan women's rights while in the White House, also said she was worried that people “will wash their hands of Afghanistan, and I think it'd be a terrible mistake."

People are struggling all over the country and she's worried about not have "high end" furniture to "ENTERTAIN" her friends. Who the hell can afford to entertain a bunch of friends these days?

It sounds like they planned for their life in Texas about like Bush planned for the Iraq war–as in "not at all". Sorry about the furniture, but there are a lot of people with more serious things on their minds than dining room tables.

Wow! With the poor spelling and grammar in these posts, I'd question the appropriateness of many of you expressing more than shallow, oversimplified retorts about a man and woman who held/hold no malice towards you.
Few people want to be president because it is an overwhelming task, however, many are willing to play Monday morning quarterback in attacking this president. Yes, he made many mistakes in 8 years, but this new guy is on a pace to make George look like a genius!
You can't discourage business owners from making money by taxing them more heavily, AND expect them to grow their business..i.e., create jobs. Never has greater taxation on businesses led to PRIVATIZED job creation and expansion.
So, lay off the Bushes and focus on your Robin Hood, and remember to ask yourself, "Is this 'the change we (truly voted for) NEED.'"
She's exactly what a first lady should be like. She is greatly missed, but glad they are both doing well. I wish the former President and First Lady all the best.

First off, Laura Bush used to be a Democrat and became a republican AFTER she met "W". Just because she kept a smile on her face didn't hide the fact that she obviously was merely biting her tongue to keep from venting all that pent up anger against the absolute stupidest president ever, He wasn't just a very stupid president, he was a stupid human being. How can anybody see any good in the GOP who believe that Americans should only watch out for their own interests and leave the rest in the dust? Is that what Jesus taught? No. Jesus said love your neighbor as yourself. Bush, who claims to be God's man on earth, practiced the religion of feed the wealthy and don't pay any attention to those in real need. Laura, please take the time to re-educate your pathetic insignificant other. With a little luck, maybe you can convert him to a Christian Democrat.
President and Mrs, Bush, I was always told when people are talking about you they are leaving someone else alone. Thanks, for all you did for us as Americans and humans. Over 4 thousand soldiers can't get back to their old routine because they are dead thanks to this woman's husband. They don't deserve to be back to their old routine. The should spend the rest of their lives tending to the grave sites of all those killed in Bush's War. This Bush family has nothing but nerve.

You have such a great life,that you don't know how real people live.I have been without a job since last June,for reasons some of our work went overseas,which the last President did not try to put a stop to.HERE in a small town of Minn.The Steel Plants are laying off up to 500 people,what a disaster,just enjoy your parties and your new home.
I'm so happy that "life is great" for the Bushes....but what about for the rest of the American people? Our economy is tanking, families are suffering, soldiers continue to die in W's war, and the Bushes are still living high off the hog. Doesn't seem quite fair, does it?
