Laura Bush dishes on life post-presidency

Former first lady Laura Bush said she and her husband are back to their old routine in Dallas, Texas.

Former first lady Laura Bush said she and her husband are back to their old routine in Dallas, Texas.

(CNN) –- Just over a month since they left 1600 Pennsylvania Ave for a quiet Dallas neighborhood, former first lady Laura Bush said she and her husband are “back to our old routine.”

In her first post-White House interview, the former first lady told ABC News that she and former President George W. Bush were enjoying coffee together every morning, holding dinner parties with friends, and dealing with the hunt for furniture. “Life is great,” she said.

"We have very little furniture. We don't have a kitchen table or a dining room table," said Bush. "Friends loaned me a kitchen table, and the other night I had 16 people for dinner, and I had to borrow chairs from the Secret Service next door.”

Laura Bush says her husband is meeting the neighbors, making trips to the hardware store, and catching up on some reading via a Kindle. His latest read is a novel given to him for Christmas by former Vice President Dick Cheney.

And while Laura Bush lived and breathed politics for the last eight years, the former first lady said she did not watch President Obama's first address to Congress because she simply forgot.

"I thought it was so ironic that for eight years I would be a nervous wreck before the State of the Union, and for days before, as George would be preparing his speech, worried about it and thinking about what was going to be in the speech," Bush said. “And this time it came and went and I didn't even think about it."

The first lady, an ardent champion of Afghan women's rights while in the White House, also said she was worried that people “will wash their hands of Afghanistan, and I think it'd be a terrible mistake."

    Laura said...
"And this time it came and went and I didn't even think about it."

Her comments should not surprise any everyday working American ,after all the county is in a mess by the hands of her hubby and she didn’t even think to listen. Why? because all they care about are themselves!!! What a disgrace!!! People are out of jobs, losing homes, no health care, dying because of Bushes war and she could care less how our NEW President wants to rebuild AMERICA.

She makes me sick to my stomach!!!
I'm so glad they are OUT of the WHITE HOUSE, what a mess W. left!!!

I am for Obama ........... but this joke was to good to not post.

    Stimulus Payment Info.

"This year, taxpayers will receive an Economic  Stimulus Payment. This is a Very exciting new program that I will explain  using the Q and A format:

    Q. What is an Economic  Stimulus Payment?
    A. It is money that the federal government wi ll  send to taxpayers.

    Q. Where will the government get this  money?
    A. From taxpayers.

    Q. So the government is  giving me back my own money?
    A. Only a smidgen.

    Q. What  is the purpose of this payment?
    A. The plan is that you will use the money to purchase a high-definition TV Set, thus stimulating the economy.

    Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China ?
    A. Shut up.

Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the US economy by spending your stimulus check wisely:

If you spend that money at Wal-Mart, all the money will go to China.
If you spend it on gasoline it will go to the Arabs.
If you purchase a computer it will go to India.
If you purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala (unless you buy organic).
If you buy a car it will go to Japan.
If you purchase useless crap it will go to Taiwan.

If you pay your credit cards off, it will go to bank management bonuses and they will hide if offshore.  Same with stock investment.

Instead, you can keep the money in America by spending it at yard sales, going to a baseball game, or spending it on prostitutes, beer and wine (domestic ONLY), or tattoos, since those are the only American businesses still operating in the US.

Ah to sit at the dinner table with Laura and0 "W". Will he choke on the prime rib, will he communicate a complete thought to his friends or will he pull on the fake door?

    Yes that is true entertainment.

aside: Not everyone can love "W"!

Hope she doesn't get used to having W around the house. We're expecting him to be thrown in jail for treason, war crimes and profiteering.

That this woman married a moron speaks volumes to her intelligence level. She's too dumb to see reality if it slapped her in the face. George and Co ruined our country and she says "life is great". No one needs to say who she ask about that statement. Great for her, miserable for the honest people of this country!

Simply put...the Bush's are into themselves and snobs. If she doesn't have furniture yet then she's been awfully lazy for 2 months plus...KNOWING they were moving months ago?

When was the last time all you haters wrote your own representatives? Things don't just happen by the swoosh of a pen....they have to be voted on by yours (and mine) reps. I don't see how a ridiculous plan for a rail from Las Vegas to Los Angeles is any different from some of the economic mistakes Bush made. We're talking BILLIONS of dollars! Again, the "leaders" get what they want while some of us still can't find a job. I'm not saying Bush is completely innocent in this economic equation, but we have to remember that the Republicans attempted SEVERAL times to put a stop to the never-ending subprime fiasco that pretty much, is the root of the situation we are dealing with.

    From the LA Times:
"Tell me how spending $8 billion in this bill to have a high-speed rail line between Los Angeles and Las Vegas is going to help the construction worker in my district," House Minority Leader John A. Boehner of Ohio complained as he and all his fellow Republicans voted against the stimulus. Republicans cited the rail project in accusing Democrats of breaking their word to keep the bill free of pet projects.

Of course, Harry Reid insists that not ALL the $$ is going to the rail which is located in HIS DISTRICT.

Laura, as usual, is too generous. She is a class act and the country hasn't had a first lady with her charm for ages. Their life sounds like what we all long for, but with Obama in the White House, all of our lives will be sorely affected by his thoughtless moves so far. The Bush's will be considered "rich people" and they'll pay for it. Unlike some of Obama's people who don't pay up (unless they get caught). Laura probably didn't watch Obama's speech, besides not being interested like me, but because he blasted her husband and continues to blast him every time he makes a move. Why would she want to listen to him any more? Me, I watched reruns of Jerry Seinfeld.

We so hope Laura and George are enjoying their fancy new lifestyle while our country crumbles and our soldiers die in Iraq and Afghanistan.
George should be sent to Iraq for the remainder of the war – you know, the war he started based on lies!!!

I really disliked Bush as President but always liked Mrs. Bush.

What I find interesting is people saying how great a President Bush was. Must be rich, white or just plain stupid.

Laura Bush was a great first lady. If you like her husband or not that doesn't take away from her in her role as first lady. Judge her on her record and not her husbands. I think she indeed showed the dignity that is expected of a first lady.

I like the part where she said:

"she did not watch President Obama's first address to Congress because she simply forgot".

I'll bet you want to forget the nightmare George W. left sitting in the White
House. Your husband has gone down as one of the worst P.O.T.U.S.

    How embarrassing !!!

I guess the Clinton's didn't have the furniture issue, since they stole the furniture and chandeliers from the White House. No first lady will ever have as much class as Laura Bush.

Well the Bushes are back in Texas. Many of us are greatful. As they ponder where and what type of furniture to buy, perhaps Mr. Bush will ponder the mess he and his administration left us in. Some of us have a hard time wondering where our next loaf of bread is coming from, much less having a table. Poor, poor Mr. Bush!

    Honeychild and a few others:

You are so full of hatred and jealousy. Liberals preach hate and are the real ones who have their head in the sand. Democrats are all about control, not bi-partisanship. The Republicans were too nice, to a fault.

I echo the sentiments of others: I am very nervous about what those in power have in store for our country. Laws and rules are being changed that many will not realize. The basic foundations of our government are truly in danger.

I wonder if the ghosts of all the dead haunt their dreams?

    Probably not.
