Laura Bush dishes on life post-presidency

Former first lady Laura Bush said she and her husband are back to their old routine in Dallas, Texas.

Former first lady Laura Bush said she and her husband are back to their old routine in Dallas, Texas.

(CNN) –- Just over a month since they left 1600 Pennsylvania Ave for a quiet Dallas neighborhood, former first lady Laura Bush said she and her husband are “back to our old routine.”

In her first post-White House interview, the former first lady told ABC News that she and former President George W. Bush were enjoying coffee together every morning, holding dinner parties with friends, and dealing with the hunt for furniture. “Life is great,” she said.

"We have very little furniture. We don't have a kitchen table or a dining room table," said Bush. "Friends loaned me a kitchen table, and the other night I had 16 people for dinner, and I had to borrow chairs from the Secret Service next door.”

Laura Bush says her husband is meeting the neighbors, making trips to the hardware store, and catching up on some reading via a Kindle. His latest read is a novel given to him for Christmas by former Vice President Dick Cheney.

And while Laura Bush lived and breathed politics for the last eight years, the former first lady said she did not watch President Obama's first address to Congress because she simply forgot.

"I thought it was so ironic that for eight years I would be a nervous wreck before the State of the Union, and for days before, as George would be preparing his speech, worried about it and thinking about what was going to be in the speech," Bush said. “And this time it came and went and I didn't even think about it."

The first lady, an ardent champion of Afghan women's rights while in the White House, also said she was worried that people “will wash their hands of Afghanistan, and I think it'd be a terrible mistake."

Linda, if you had been paying attention we don't exactly have a President that favors abortion, just one who favors a woman's right to choose. If you don't want to have an abortion, don't. But you don't have the right to tell anyone else what they can do. Enough of this crap.

Poor lady can't be easy stuck with that dolt for the rest of your life.
Maybe some Rich Republican will "donate" furniture. You have 4 more years to catch President Obama's speeches. I understand, it's still too fresh, you probably would have looked at the C student to your right and found him lacking."

I am an A student in Accounting, and I made sure I didn't watch Obama's speech (read the transcript though), you talk about Bush, Obama lied to everyone's face when he said their were no earmarks, because I am pretty sure there were over 10 Billion worth, but then again that is the Accountant in me.

    4. Uuuuuuugh….. Laura Bush needs to STOP with the "sappy" BS.
    5. She makes me sick to my stomach!!!
I thought the liberals were passionate, loving, and tolerant folk . I have seen how you cry when someone spoke badly against the current FLOTUS (for good reason). Personally, I think the FLOTUS and children are off-limits but I also think you need to give the same level of respect to Laura Bush that you expect repubs to give to Michelle Obama, they are not politicians. They are wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters!

What a wonderful First Lady, Mrs. Bush was! I am not an Obama supporter, but I do hope that Mrs. Obama will set as wonderful an example as Mrs. Bush did. And I also hope that President Obama will not have to endure the utter hatered that President Bush had to endure. (Remember over 50 million people voted AGAINST him) Thank God they are back to their old routine, and enjoying life. After 8-years of making sure the American people were safe from terror, they deserve some rest and a PRIVATE life. By the way, my 18-month old horse is named "George W", with his registered name "The President", and my dogs name is "W", with his registered name "Champion Shenstone's Commander 'N Chief". May God bless America and former President George W. Bush and Mrs. Bush! Thank You Mr. President & Mrs. Bush for serving your country!!! Less than 1/2% of the American people would make the sacrifics you made, nor could endure the harsh criticism and hatred.

Well people, the damage is done. There's no need in us giving ourselves a heart attack over something we can't change. The best thing most of us can do is forgive Bush for what he has done, this is for your sake. Because if you walk around with this hate and anger in your heart it only affects you, Bush doesn't have a clue to what you are going thru. He will have to answer to a greater judge than us, and that is God. Prayfully for his sake he has asked God to forgive him, but according to the word of God he would need to apologize and ask the American people to forgive him for what he has done as well, in order for God to forgive him. But right now, it seems as if he is walking in a lot of pride. I know we all make mistakes, but you are a much better man when you are able to admit to your mistakes, something Bush has not done. So, I pray that God would convict his heart and that he would respond for his on soul, it is in trouble.

George Bush was a great President, Obama is a disaster.

Looking forward to 2012 to kick Obama out of office"

I completely agree with you Greg, 100% . Only the undecuated people that gripe about how life wasn't handed to them complain about the last 8 years, maybe if people took the time to bust their butts to get an education, like I have while working, then maybe you wouldn't feel you need a socialist/marxist president.

People do pick apart every word, don't they? So she says "Life is great." What, you wish her life wasn't great? You're wishing misery on her? Why? If it's because you're miserable and you believe she should share in that fate for some reason, that's pretty ridiculous. My life is fine, and I currently struggle with finances and job situations. Life is hard right now, but that doesn't mean it has to be miserable. Your state of mind is a choice. Just rise above your circumstances.

You're wrong, Annie. I have every right to tell you not to kill someone, rob someone, paint grafitti on my house, sell pornography to my kids, etc. Therefore, I have every right to ask you not to kill your unborn child. It's that simple.

Just another proof that neither of them had any business being in the White House to begin with. And wonderful for you, Mrs. Bush. Your life is great and you don't care what the President says. Like you don't care what state the country is in, its people and its almost 5000 military families who no longer have their loved ones with them. Good job! Keep giving dinner parties, making 150K giving speeches written by someone else. Enjoy your life. Just try not to get too much on TV. Americans have real news to watch.

The comments here based on LB's article simply proves my point about most people. They are always looking for someone to blame but themselves. Subprime loans are bad news and never should have been allowed because people getting them have no self control. Oh, and by the way subprime is a gift from Clinton not Bush. Take responsibility for yourself. If I lost my job now the last person I would blame is Obama.

Cry me a river, her husband has turned OUR country upside down we are at the threshold of hell, there is no telling how long it will take to get things back the way that we want them to be. Does a war that was a total lie, with thousands of lost soldiers, mean nothing to some of you people on here???? If you had had a soldier their, a beloved son, you Bush lovers would sure as hell know the difference. Try to think of the thousands of INNOCENT Iraq citizens who lost their lives because of Bush lies as well. Think people, Think before you uphold any of this administration, its is a lost cause on those who cared enough to SEE the truth. I really wonder if you realize how many of our guys are named. There is no defense for what Bush did. Look in the mirror and try to uphold him I DARE YOU!!

haha...all of you idiot Bush haters are so uneducated, so unknowing of the ways of the world...and so far up Obama's behind....

Wait a year or so, when you paycheck is seeing a 40-45% Fed tax deduction, because, well, Obama's plan to rape businesses and the rich....fell a little short.....and he's now taxing those making 50k or above.....see what you fools say then...

Bush spent a lot, but he protected us. Obama shamed this country, and committed treason against my brothers in arms who sacrificed for this country and it's freedoms...by apologizing to our enemies....that's an unforgiveable offense.

Change is coming Obama! We need a leader...

Wow do we have lots of Bush Haters. I think they need to take a look at them selves the bitterness you people have is a disgrace. If your that negative go to another country and live. I believe that Bush is being giving a raw deal. I have lots of respect for the former president and his wife. I wish them well. They have just not gone out to purchase furniture yet. She is not crying you crazy fools. Lets see all of you putting up with all those liberals and democrates. It is the dems that are crying all the time not the republicans. You will all realize one day that he did do some good for this country. He at least respected the US and wore the flag pin. Obama would not wear the american flag on his lapel till the end and would not salute the flag. TO me that is the Biggest disgrace to our country . Oh he will wear now but beware he will will make just as many mistakes. Watch your money folks. Look at t he people he has gone thru already they have serious money issues....At least the Bush family is honest. My heart goes out to them with these awful disrespectful comments these people are making. They need to get a life. Peop

Nothing new here... these disgraceful people deserve nothing. Notce the usual hate filled republicans who allowed the theaft of everyones children, grandchildren and great grandchildren dont even care. We are all held accouintable in the worlds eyes until we actually hold the disgusting human garbage who created such attrocities are brought to justice. From George Bush, Dick Cheney all the way down to thes coward soldiers who tortured and I DEFINATELY include those Soldiers who stood back and watched.

We need a monument erected so we never forget the disgrace those military members brought on America. Hopefully to include the names of every single one. Again including the cowards who sat around watched these attrocities take place.

    True American Cowards!
