For the second time in as many days, a prominent Republican has likened Pres. Obama's policies to socialism.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Another prominent Republican told the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday that the president’s spending plans are pushing the country to the brink of socialism.

Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, the only member of the senate to earn a perfect rating from the American Conservative Union, called President Obama “the world’s best salesman of socialism” on Friday in describing his prime time speech earlier this week.

DeMint, a fierce opponent of government expansion, told the CPAC crowd that conservatives might have to “take to the streets to stop America’s slide into socialism.”

His remarks comes a day after Mike Huckabee told the conference of conservative activists that “the Union of American Socialist Republics is being born” with the president’s stimulus package.

“Lenin and Stalin would love this stuff,” Huckabee said of the government bailing out financial institutions.

I have not heard how the Republicans would "fix" the economic problems that are plaguing this country. They seem to know that Obama'a plan is wrong, but they offer not solutions. They had 8 years to right the ship, they have no credibility. Rush Limbaugh, a high school dropout , seems to be emerging as their leader and spokesperson. Only in America!

thomas   February 27th, 2009 11:54 am ET

If the second amendment allows for unfettered stockpiling of munitions by private citizens, what do you suppose the words "to promote the general welfare" in the preamble of the Constitution mean. The preamble states the purpose for all of the other amendments. It appears that socialism was written into the Constitution. What country did you say you were from, DeMinto?

BKrause   February 27th, 2009 11:54 am ET

If DeMint and Huckabee were mentally alive and well, they would realize that it is their party that has driven America to the edge of despair resulting in the drastic measures we now need to endure. These voices need to be much more humble with their criticism and tone. It doesn't work anymore.

Nick   February 27th, 2009 11:53 am ET

Let's be serious. This is fear mongering at its worst. At this point, all of those banks, etc. should have wound up in receivership...i.e. wards of the bankruptcy court. But wait.....a ward of the court? That's socialist. Get a clue you right-wing illiterates. READ 'The Communist Manifesto', 'Das Kapital', 'The Red Book' or a few others before you start crying...or yes vist Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras or Germany. Then again you could do what I did....spend 20-odd years in the Army, get an education and learn what's actually going on. The private sector, skewed taxes and a less than knowledgeable populace got us here. Grow up and face the solutions....or create some. just remember government costs money and bonds are loans.

Seattle Sue   February 27th, 2009 11:53 am ET

OH72====Why don't you check your facts before you post? The Democrats have not had a majority in Congress for the past four years. But I suppose you being a Republican you think you can say anything and expect people to believe you.

Jim Ma   February 27th, 2009 11:53 am ET

Scary Ken sounded like America for a min there...when Bush was in office. Figures. All the kiddy rambo brats with their hey diddle diddle straight up the middle ideology. Yep, we went through this all before but ya know, history isnt important so we just keep up the BS. Education took a backseat to blind patriotism, now its almost as if they are fighting for the same people that brought us here, its definetly enough to make you wonder, by the way, anyone see a boyscout lately?? its bad enough when i was kid only weirdos did that but now every kid looks like a hitler youth, or better yet, a communist general, got a medal for everything under the sun, if you ask me sh!t got real scary for a while there. Im all for Obama fixing this mess we are in. Im not dumb enough to think itll all be my way though, but its about time we have an intellgent president with better awareness of the day.

What?   February 27th, 2009 11:52 am ET

What are you talking about? Ya...we had a wonderful past 8 years you bunch of idiots. Open your eyes. Maybe if you all thought a bit more about the ones that don't have and less about yourselves this country wouldn't have so much poverty in the streets. Every Republican in office has taken this country in the wrong direction in my eyes.

Why should we listen to individuals telling us Obama is doing the wrong thing when Bush put us here in the first place. You all need to crawl back under the rock you were under and let someone else run this country for the people and not for the corporations.

While I think the rhetoric in these statements is at least a little exhaggerative, I can't write them off entirely, at least not in priniciple.
Anyone questioning the validity of the core of these arguments should google articles and essays by Austan Goolsbee. He was Obama's economic advisor during the presidential campaign and his ideas on wealth and its redistribution using the government as a gathering agent may shed light on what's up here. Informative stuff.

I call for an end to BOTH dems/reps ... all of them make me sick.

@ Rapier -

You're wrong. The first 5-6 yrs of Bush's tenure the economy was screaming unemployment was low, and we were safe from terrorism.
Enter Pelosi and the democratically controlled congress....a little over 2 yrs ago....now, the economy's in the toilet, we have racial tensions because you elected a waffle that looks black, has no experience, and really can't identify where he was born......there goes the nation. It wasn't conservatives, idiot, it was liberal bunholes like you, that want "fairness," for all, without anyone having to work...or make their own way....what it is, White Guilt? Or are you one of those that support Obama merely because he's saying he's black?

JMG   February 27th, 2009 11:46 am ET

Socialism! R u serious! They are not even giving the man a chance! These Republicans are acting as if this whiole economic meltdown started the day Obama entered into office. Think about who has been in the office for the past 8year... Did you forget about him people??? Obama is just trying to come up with sensible solutions that will be helpful for everyone and to pull people out of the slumps. Its not going to happen by tomorrow! But everytime he comes up with a solution, the conservatives just shut him flat down. Obviously your way of thinking is not helpful because if it were, we wouldn't be in this mess. GIVE THE MAN A CHANCE!

carol   February 27th, 2009 11:46 am ET

It's too bad that Senator DeMint and Mike Huckabee do not have the grace to realize that their party LOST the election! Now they are waving the "FEAR" banner again that the past failed administration used on middle Americans. Instead, it would be nice if they showed patriotism by supporting the new elected administration to get our country moving again. Shameful.

Glenn Rollins   February 27th, 2009 11:46 am ET

The Lord has opposition? How could this be? He is leading us down the road to salvation by putting us tens of trillions of dollars in debt. With the help from the media, how could anyone deny that this is the best for this "crisis". It worked well for G W B, so all Obama had to do was substitute the word "terrorist" with "crisis" and all the sheeple just follow. Just say the magic word "crisis" and the US treasury and Americas wealth is yours to plunder.

Marie   February 27th, 2009 11:46 am ET

Even with the daunting problems that the country is facing, the GOP is totally unable to go beyond labelling and name calling.
Their political discourse is at the 4th grade level. Come to think of it, it is not so unrealistic, because it will take at least one generation before the GOP can fool Americans into electing republicans back to power.

Some Guy   February 27th, 2009 11:45 am ET

Rev. Huckabee....perhaps you time would be better spent rereading your Bible. I think you missed the part about feed the hungry, cloth the poor, love your neighbor. I would suggest "Good News for Modern Man". It is a great "socialist" text. Might I suggest starting with the Sermon on the Mount. You seem to be stuck in the Old Testament. Most of it tells about the life of a man called Jesus. You have heard of him right?!

Look at Demint – tight-wad, slicked-back hair – he just looks crooked – kind of like that used car salesman who had that great deal.......and was willing to say anything for the sale.

DeMint – used rhetoric salesman

So let's see now – let rich people cheat and defraud American citizens to make as much money as they possibly can. Then, watch the entire economy collapse as a result, and millions lose their jobs. Then, complain when the government steps in to try and help people keep their homes, and keep their jobs. Nice. What's the matter, you'll have to buy a 40" TV instead of a home theater? boo hoo hoo.

This country needs a kick in the butt in terms of common decency and morals towards which we may engender fairness and equality, rather than greed and jealousy.

Slick DeMint – I wouldn't trust him with my watch, let alone my future

This is just more of the same from republicans. They copy Limpbag's rhetoric, pick one lie, then really hammer on it until people start believing it. Hitler's propaganda department would be proud of republican tactics today. Socialism is that lie currently. We are not socialist. Obama's vision of America isn't one of Socialism. This hammering of lies is the reason the republicans have been swept out of power to the fringes of politics.

Gpras   February 27th, 2009 11:43 am ET

Obama a socialist? I thought we put that to bed. Let's see he wants energy companies to expand green jobs and new technologies, he will promote private stem cell research to foster new breakthoughs. He wants the PRIVATE sector to build bridges, trains, roads and refit buildings to reduce energy dependance. Since when is it socialism to provide health care education and promote energy independence? That means vitually all countries in the western world are socialist including the Netherlands. They provide health care, child care, education and are on their way to energy independence. Everyone is socialist who believes government is for those who can't help themselves. Hey based on the last 8 years can anyone defend capitalism and even democracy both destroyed by Mr. conservative George Bush. wow. Name calling that's all this is.

Ryan   February 27th, 2009 11:43 am ET

I just think people should study history before they spout off about things they are completely ignorant on. America's (not rebuplicans, democrats, liberals, or conservatives) wasteful and arrogant attitude got us into this mess. We are going to need to tighten our belts and have a little humility if we are going to lead this world away from this economic mess. President Obama did not create this problem...and he cannot fix it. He can only do what he feels will help. So if everyone would stop yelling at each other and go volunteer at a soup kitchen or something else useful maybe we would have a chance to right this ship. None of this bickering is constructive, we need to get off our lazy American butts and stop waiting for someone else to solve our problems.

Was their a plan in place for when the wheels fell off a few years back? Was there a plan to stay out of a bogus war?

Now that we are here in the now, what is their plan? If everyone gets a tax break, who pays the bill? We've allowed our leaders to do this to us.

What country are you people talking about. This isn't communism its socialism. The USA has been a socialist country for years we just don't describe it that way. The "Fairness Doctrine" is an idea advanced by Pillboy and his like. Obama has no intention of putting that back up and Sean Insanity knows that. It gives him something to talk (complain) about. Trickle down economics does not work. The rich guy still has the porshe and the poor guy still has to wash it for him for a pack of gum. Reagan the pinnicle of Republican thought instituted socailism when he bailed out the S&L companies. Was that due to a lack of regulation. Just maybe.

B   February 27th, 2009 11:41 am ET

As a moderate Republican, I have no problem admitting that Bush did his part in spending this country to financial ruin. He also turned a blind eye to the greed on wall street and the frenzy of a housing market. Please realize, that those aspects have really nothing to do with the war as many claim. Much of that links back to the Clinton years in which his policy was to push home ownership for EVERYBODY...helping lead to the housing issue we have now and the spark which set this economy on fire. I think we as a country need to accept that we are broke and that we can no longer consume with no regard. That is why I think we should just bite the bullet and not have so much packed into a stimulus that simply tries to sustain our current love for consumption. Paying this back is going to cripple us further in the future for generations to come!!!!!

Nola   February 27th, 2009 11:41 am ET

Do a search on how well the socialized medical systems in Canada & Great Britian are working and see if that's what you want. If Obama is truely trying to reform health care and bring down costs part of this must be medical malpractice tort reform which has been absent from all he has put forth. This is not suprising since the trial and unions were the 2 largest contributors to Obama and the DNC. Whats good for the trial bar is not good for you and I

For you Democrats...Socialism:

1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2 a: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property b: a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
3: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done

I love these people who keep insisting that the Bush years were this boom time. The fact remains that we only saw a net gain of 2 million jobs in eight years, which is anemic when compared with the previous administrations. What was Jim DeMint doing in the last eight years, or was he part of the rubberstamping machine that looked the other way and refused to deal with the problem untill it blew up in our collective faces? Its easy to talk tough when you have no power, but I doubt Mr. DeMint would be as decisive were the situation reversed.

Conservatives have been running the country for the last eight years, with full control of the executive and legislative for six. If this were the first time that huge deficits were run up under a conservative president they could argue that Bush was an anomaly but this happened under Reagan too, and a Democratic administration had to clean up their mess .The Republican purveyors of blind deregulation, cronyism and emasculation of the SEC have no credability at all and no alternative ideas to fix this mess, just bluster..The myth of Republican fiscal responsibility is officially dead, RIP.

How often did democrats support Bush's policies?? He was president right?
By democrat logic, that must mean that the democrats were "objectionists" during the bush years?

The opposition is there to call the government on when it does something wrong, not to be "yes men" for the president.

Those of you that are able to read and differentiate..need to study something besides Obama-laced websites. DeMint's 100% on the mark, and Obama himself admits it in his own writings, his wife's writings back it up, as well as the multitude of unscrupulous supporters that have funneled and laundered money throughout his campaign. If you truly care about your future, and the future of your children, or this country...you'll step back, and evaluate Obama's ideas and proposals and see that they are nothing short of poison for the economy of this country. Bush ran up the tab, but kept us safe. Obama's stepping on the gas and running up the debt exponentially, apologizing to our enemies, and taking away your rights....all simultaneously. Open your eyes, shut your mouths, and read for yourselves...it's not a Republican v. Democratic issue, it's the livelihood of the nation, a free nation, that's at stake...Obama only cares about power and control...and once you give it to him, it's too late...he's on his own agenda to create a state where he can do, and take whatever he pleases from whomever; and soon he'll turn on his very supporters....to feed the need.

They think that everyone in America thinks in the same way as they think in their own little provincial world. While it is true that certain regulartory commissions were "defanged" during Democratic Presidencies, if you check, you will see that those loosening the regulartions were the GOP, who actually did control Congress (you have to have a two-thirds majority in both Houses to control Congress).

There is a lot of blame on both sides for the past. But we must stop dwelling on the blame game, and try to find out something that works. If you have better ideas, submit them on Change.org, the official website where ideas from the people of the country are then submitted to our new President. But I have to agree with Obama 2.0 down below: the honor system doesn't work for business and Wall Street. Nor does it work for the banking world.

Heather in Seattle   February 27th, 2009 11:38 am ET

Republicans, extreme socialism is bad, but not all aspects of socialism are bad, just like not all aspects of capitalism are good. Are you afraid that Obama will get his social programs to work and our country will end up better for it and you will have been proven wrong and have to change your ideas? Is it the change from what you have conditoned yourself to believe that scares you the most???

Rico   February 27th, 2009 11:38 am ET

And what do you expect from the Republicans? Any idea that does not directly benefit them is always a bad idea.

Larry, Apex, North Carolina   February 27th, 2009 11:38 am ET

Brian from Fort Mill, SC-you really don't have a clue, pal. Have you ever been to Canada or Mexico? Do you know anyone from those countries? You are a typical empty head who doesn't know what he is talking about...

Q   February 27th, 2009 11:38 am ET

I think the only people here who are playing the blame game is completely obvious...

IT'S THE DEMOCRATS! All you guys can do is blame Bush or Republicans...

I don't see any ideas coming from you all either...more of the same...

NRMD   February 27th, 2009 11:37 am ET

I had been in this country for the last 15 years. I am sorry to say most Americans think about their parties (political and private) than their country. America is becoming a party country. Elsewhere people are divided based on their race and religion. In America, we are divided by party politics. Do any one love America? then leave your party now.

Priscilla   February 27th, 2009 11:37 am ET

I guess it's okay for Republicans to ruin our economy, take America into the wrong war, and all the other lies and deceptions of the Bush Administration, but it's not okay for Obama to try to clean up the mess!!!

NOT!!! I applaud President Obama for his efforts and determination to help the America people. Republicans are so very out of touch with Americans! Wow, Republicans, get a grip!!!

Dave   February 27th, 2009 11:37 am ET

Here we go again. The GOP, instead of offering intelligent and coherent alternatives, resorts to their old scare tactics, whining, and obstruction. Seriously, why can't you clowns come up with some original ideas of your own? Are you people really that dumb? Oh wait, your ideas have been tried and they're responsible for getting us into our current position.

Obama   February 27th, 2009 11:37 am ET

Okay we got the type of Socialism in which... the Politicians, wall street, and lawmakers know all the loopholes, lobbyist, and companies get involved in all this under the table money, investments, bonuses etc etc.. So these Politicians, lawmakers and lobbyist can pad their pockets.. and the country ends up going under.

Then we got the Socialism where there are a few more laws, more guidelines. A Government that is realistic where there are less bonuses and exchanges with Politicians and lawmakers and our Country stays afloat...

Hmmm. which would I want?

Frank Smigelski   February 27th, 2009 11:37 am ET

STALIN AND LENIN? COME ON NOW.

Senshuken   February 27th, 2009 11:36 am ET

Since when is "socialism" a dirty word? The Cold War is long since over, the old Soviet Union never practiced socialism anyway. Here in the U.S., we've never practiced pure capitalism (the closest, ironically, was Hong Kong). Denmark, if I remember correctly, was pronounced as one of the countries where the population was ranked among the happiest in the world. They practice "socialism". I really don't see what the senator's complaining about. Someone ought to tell him that Stalin and Lenin are dead and that this is the 21st century.

Majority or Minority?   February 27th, 2009 11:36 am ET

If ppl want republicans they would have voted for republicans. Mr. Obama hasn't held the presidencey with the flip of coin, it was the choice of the majority and he is fulfiling what he has promised. If the majority wants U.S. to be what they wanted it to be you got no choice but accpet it. That is what democracy means. If republicans policy works for the past 8 years, with no doubt McCain would be a president. First he was competing with an African American president that was a big advantage for McCain, but the economy pain is far painful. As a person what I want is who will give me job. Done!!! We gave you 8 years, u missed it, now we have to give another 8 years to Dems, then if they fail, then America can't keep trying a new party must be formed. That my personal thinking. Now it is time for the republicans to close their mouth and watch because you are a failure. Done!!!

Republican comedy   February 27th, 2009 11:36 am ET

The ignorance this guy is spouting is insane. How about you guys 1: learn the definitiion of socialism. 2: Come up with an answer that isn't feeding money into the hands fof the rich while cutting medical care and education to the poor.

Steve-o   February 27th, 2009 11:36 am ET

Eric – Germany, France, Russia, Netherlands, Sweden, Canada. Heaven forbid our country sink into the depravity and despair of these refugee camp nations. "Socialist" is just another label.

Republicans.....

You have a choice to make.

You can either be a part of the problem (whine, name-calling, hate-mongering)

OR

You can be a part of the solution (ideas to fix this mess????)

Lisa P   February 27th, 2009 11:35 am ET

No surprises here. We got into this mess because Republicans can't figure out the difference between a good investment and a bad investment. I have no problem with Obama using my taxes to invest in the future of this country. After eight years of Bush & Co. flushing money down the drain it's about time!

EARL THE PEARL   February 27th, 2009 11:35 am ET

IT IS AMAZING THAT WHEN HERBERT HOOVER BUSH WAS IN OFFICE THE REPUBLICAN PARTY RUBBER STAMPED EVERYTHING HE DID. BUSH PROBABLY HAD ONE OF THE LOWEST I. Q. OF ANY PRESIDENT WE HAD SO WHAT THAT TELL YOU OF MOST SENATORS AND CONGRESSMEN IN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.

We'll meet you there   February 27th, 2009 11:35 am ET

If you want to meet us in the streets, Senator, prepared to be vastly outnumbered!

garry albrecht   February 27th, 2009 11:35 am ET

This republican like most others are defeatist. Their new-founded religion of principal is 8 years too late.

Kurt   February 27th, 2009 11:35 am ET

Better a socialist than a Republican congressman, who with Pres. Bush destroyed the monetary base of this country through give aways and legislation to benefit the rich. Not to mention a costly and unneeded war in Iraq that sucked out billions of dollars to the defense companies while wasting our tax dollars. Give me a tax and spend Democrat any day over a don't tax, but spend like drunken sailor Republican.

Craig - Hastings, MN   February 27th, 2009 11:35 am ET

"Conservative": In my Websters it is defined as"Resistant to change."This so-called "Socialism" is a misnomer. Some don't want change because it threatens their "ideals" such as someone else picks up the tab while they do little or nothing except shift money around to make themselves more wealthy(on paper). Again while they do little or nothing to help the nation except blather about how THEY shouldn't have to step up to the plate themselves. Obama is at least trying to do something while these so called "conservatives keep trying to eliminate civil rights and CONTROL people by giving hem just enough to survive. TIME FOR A NEW PARTY PEOPLE. I submit we dissolve the GOP and put Limbaugh on trial for sedition. Maybe then some people will uinderstand tha WE are all in this mess together.

Rich People Don't Pay Taxes!   February 27th, 2009 11:35 am ET

Leona Helmsley said what all rich Republicans and Democrats want to say "I don't pay taxes; little people pay taxes."

That is why they are so upset with the Prez; they will have to pay taxes now! LOL.

Eric   February 27th, 2009 11:35 am ET

Obviously these sorts of speeches at conference like that only serve one purpose: get the base excited. All of the derisive comments here just help to prove that.

I don't doubt that the Republicans will indeed come up with something that sticks with more than the 27% that never swayed from Bush, but they haven't yet and I don't know that they will before the 2010 midterms.

Until then, I apprehensively support this course. 62 million Americans (including me) voted for this sort of change and we're just going to have to see what happens. Meanwhile, I find the name-calling and insults to be completely counterproductive. Some of you really need to grow up.

Larry, Apex, North Carolina   February 27th, 2009 11:35 am ET

Coming from you, Senator Meatball-thank you for the compliment. Check out what crummy shape your state is in, and what backwards "leadership" you have in South Carolina before you start judging other people...

Frank   February 27th, 2009 11:34 am ET

define socialism...oh yeah, you can't. The american public is TIRED OF BEING TREATED LIKE IDIOTS by our representives. Throwing around button pushing name calling labels isn't going to get you elected anymore...git off the TV, git to work and fix this mess.

Di   February 27th, 2009 11:34 am ET

Before Obama was elected most GOP were aware of his Socialism views. At first I was angry but as weeks pasted, my Heart is broken for OUR COUNTRY! Dem need to pull their heads from the sand.

Scott   February 27th, 2009 11:34 am ET

For all of you complaining that the republicans are just squawking all the time and not coming up with alternative answers...get a clue. Their alternatives get squashed by the majority. I've read plenty of alternatives because i've looked for them. They're not hard to find, but don't expect the media to talk about them. Senator DeMint and Gov. Jindal have all kinds of great ideas that are far better than the socialism ideas that we're heading towards.

Alex   February 27th, 2009 11:34 am ET

Obama has said multiple times that if the Republicans have a better idea, let's hear it. And the Republicans instead are wasting time by complaining about helicopters and boogey-man political philosophies that 99.99% of Americans don't care about. GOP: come up with a better solution - and one that doesn't require millions of Americans to go jobless.

cubscoutmom   February 27th, 2009 11:34 am ET

Until the GOP come up with some concrete plans....nothing they say to me will stick...its like trying to hold water with your hand..and the water slips between your fingers...They had 8 years to do better..but they didn't, so shut the hell up...and stop trying to incite hatred for President Obama...The GOP are coming off like the bitter, hateful party I have nothing but contempt for them...this country is in a mess...and President Obama is trying his best...He only has been in office over a month while the GOP had 8 years to put us in the mess in the first place..

JL   February 27th, 2009 11:34 am ET

Really? Socialism? Are you sure? Coming out of 8 years of a dictatorship, I really don't care.

This type of rhetoric is designed for one reason only...to tear Obama down because he's popular. The republicans don't like it...it really isn't about running the country.

It would be neat to know how many of you blogging here have ever looked up the definintion of words like "socialist" and "communist" before throwing them around so easily. My guess is few or none. Do you even know the true definition of capitalism, or do you just repeat things like a trained parrot? It's time to break the trance and start thinking for yourselves, people.

Ex-GOP Gal   February 27th, 2009 11:34 am ET

Socialism is what the Republicans have brought us to. There is no other answer to get out of this. That is why they whine and complain but have no solid solution. And no, Pelosi and Reid had no power to do anything in Congress until this year.

Pretty much the rest of the industrialized world is more socialist than the United States. Full-on socialism is probably a pretty bad idea but then again so is full-on capitalism. I've been around Europe and social democracies have everything we have plus free college education, health care, etc.

Keep it up guys. You are only hurting yourselves. But you got nothing else so we expect you to continue your rants and obstructionism, negative comments and we don't expect you to contribute anything positive to help us out of the mess YOUR administration left behind. Senator DeMint likely does not even know what "socialism" is. They use this ridiculous rhetoric as fear mongering on the weak minded, while hypocritically supporting the socialized programs of military, SS, postal service, police, fire, etc. Give me a break.

Here's a little history lesson for these absurd neocons: the National Socialist Party was actually FAR RIGHT. Look it up.

Might Jesus have been socialist? Oh, no! Not the Jesus of your greediness and prejudice!

You’re hilarious! Telling what we supporters thought would happen. We unlike you don’t think that things will get better as soon as his elected. That is just plain stupid and ignorant after all the mess left around. Ignorant people like you scare the heck out of me thinking we expect a hand out. For your information I make more than 300k a year, and I am more than happy to pay my share of taxes, not because I want to but it is the right thing to do. I’ve seen the “conservatives” value at work and where it’s gotten us a global recession… Good job by the way. Easy to criticize after destroying the USA.

angelooo bad.   February 27th, 2009 11:32 am ET

So what? In all the advanced European countries limited social programs work perfectly. The main concern of the fat-cat republicans is that they will no longer have a stranglehold on the 95% percent of decent hard working Americans. No longer do we have to attend Yale, Harvard or Standford to have a chance at a decent life here in the USA. Corporate greed and the military industrial complex will finally have to share there greed with the rest of the citizens. Boo hoo, too bad...

Sadly this doesn't at all surprise me. The republicans do the same old thing over and over again. They gain control of Washington and financially gut this nation. All the while blaming any one other then themselves. Then they lose control of Washington and for the next 8 years spend what little mental capacity they have, to come up with conspiracy theories. Thats all they ever do. They are a party that has finally been shown for there true colors. And America as a majority just simply doesn't buy into it any more. What republicans have done to this country is a disgrace.

I think that the policies of Obama and his new administration are going to ruin the creativity, morals, values, and sense of hard work that has made America the world's greatest superpower.
Taking money from those who Make the Money is not going to encourage young, intelligent, entrepreneurs to build a business which will give American's jobs.
Social economics DOES NOT grow new jobs. The best business grow and the worst ones fail. This is what keeps the world moving forward, which is a sense of trying to be Better than the next guy and producing a product that is better than the next.
Taking money away from those who are achieving Greatness and giving it to those who are Lazy, will Ruin our country and penalize those who have worked their whole lives to be the best.

jazz   February 27th, 2009 11:31 am ET

I think it's very hypocritical that the GOP never complained or raised any concerns over the spending by the Bush administration, and are now screaming about spending. They need to realize that what they did got us where we are, and something different is needed. The Obama plan IS different; not more of the same, which the GOP wants. I'm starting to think that the GOP should definitely push more spending on education for themselves, since they don't seem to get it....

Eric   February 27th, 2009 11:30 am ET

So the conservatives need to take to the streets to prevent our slide into socialism? Refresh my memory here, wasn't it a Republican that initiated our slide into socialism with TARP? And during the last eight years, should Democrats have taken to the streets to halt the rise of oligarchy? Sorry folks, but when the income growth rate for the working poor declines by 3% (which it did during Bush's first term), and the income growth rate for the top 0.1% grows at 9%, and the top 0.01% grows at 18%, you've got yourself the makings of an oligarchy. Unequal distribution of wealth is a fact of life. Absolutely. But when the incomes of Americans are distributed this way, you get our current situation.

ERS   February 27th, 2009 11:30 am ET

As far as I'm concerned the Republicans have absolutely no credibility and no right to make any comment about the current economic state...or anything else for that matter. These guys got us in this economic mess with their 'war on terror' (keep the American public in fear they won't know for sure what we're doing), never ending pork (how about the bridge to nowhere?), and tax cuts for the wealthy . They refused to see the signs of an economic downturn and do something about it before it got out of hand. I feel like I'm listening to a bunch of 5-year olds angry because their guy didn't win the big race. Get with the gameplan folks...you guys are supposed to be working FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE..ALL AMERICANS...not just the rich and famous but the little guy too! We've had enough with business as usual. If you don't have an alternative that makes sense (and obviously your 'tax cuts for the rich' did absolutely nothing so I don't want to hear that anymore) then keep it shut.

This just shows the state of denial in which republicans perpetually live. If the republican congress and Bush hadn't made such a hash of things, President Obama wouldn't be forced into the position of having to make the potentially unpopular decisions necessary to clean up the mess. Republicans have no credibility at this point so they really need to clam up until they have redeemed themselves (if that’s even possible.)

The Reps blame Clinton for triggering the problems with the Economy, but when they were in control, they did nothing to stop it. The Reps had a surplus when they started and now look where things are at. Of course, they'll blame the Dem control off the house during the last couple years of Bush's terror as the cause. The Reps are all about blaming the Dems. They spend, but don't bother about who's going to pay for it. As long as the rich get richer.

They claim we're heading towards socialism, but quite honestly, when I look at where the Reps were taking us, it's the lesser of two evils. The Reps want to have the ueber-rich and the poor. They want to control how every American lives their life and give them just enough to get by while they sit back and pat each other on the back and tell themselves what a great job they did saving Americans. The Reps feel they are superior and no one is capable of making any decisions but them and we really don't know what we want, but they're there to tell us.

Fact is, majority rules. Guess what Reps.... You aren't appealing to the majority and if the majority wants more social programs that help the bottom half of America, then there's really not much you can do about. Your fear is from losing the power and wealth, not what it would mean to America.

Question, if your child was very sick and needed specialized medical treatment, how would you select the physician that you are going to trust with the life of your child? Would you select a doctor only by listening to what he says he can do for your child, or would you look at his accomplishments in his field and his success rate at treating your child’s illness? The problem with Obama is that he has no track record and NO ACOMPLISHMENTS. He has no applicable experience whatsoever. While serving as junior senator in Illinois not only did he fail to represent his constituency by voting present 314 times, he successfully sponsored only 3 bills over 4 years while having 112 of his sponsored bills defeated, not a good track record. We are starting to see that words, promises and empty accolades are meaningless, it takes experience, humility and a history of success to lead our country out of this debacle. We made a mistake electing this man. The sooner we admit it and ask out legislators to scrutinize every move he makes, the better off we all will be.

JeffD   February 27th, 2009 11:29 am ET

I am sick an tired of hearing about how bad the 8 years were under Bush. Fact is the economy was booming in 05 and 06. Bush spent like a liberal and is a reason we are where we are at, along with many other reasons such the lack of fiscal personal responsibility by each of us. Obama is leading us to socialism plain and simple. I do NOT want his policies to work. I would rather be poor than live in a big gov't controlled country that he is pushing. If he comes up with reasonable solutions on lower taxes across the board (including the wealthy) spending less, etc. then I would support him. Until that day comes I hope he falls on his face.

Dean P Valencia Ca   February 27th, 2009 11:29 am ET

Maybe its time for South Carolina to cede from the union...again.

Jason   February 27th, 2009 11:28 am ET

Actually a comment like that coming from THEM, if I were Obama I would take it as a compliment. I'm sold.

Nathan,   February 27th, 2009 11:28 am ET

The Republicans have no concept of what everday Americans are going and more importantly they don't care. They're not a growing minority because Americans have a love affair with Democrats, they're a growing minority because American are tired of them not caring about us, Americans. They throw this word socialism around as a political football trying to scarepeople. Couldn't the precription program the GOP approved under Bush be considered a social program. The fact is the Republicans could care less about wheather or not you or I have food to eat or a roof over our head tomorrow as long as their so called conservative priniciples are not compromised. These people are outdated and thus out of power.

Bill   February 27th, 2009 11:28 am ET

Mike & Jim should stop whining and listen to the people. The people need help and Obama is making an offer.

MAtt   February 27th, 2009 11:28 am ET

This country was founded on capitalism it work for over 200 hundred years... just because it failed because some people got to greedy doesn't mean the system is flawed.

Hopefully obama spends more money driving this country into greater and greater debt. I hope he raises my taxes... genious plan.

Virginia – Stalin is under your bed.

Jerzjen   February 27th, 2009 11:28 am ET

Did someone put drugs in the drinks of these people? They want to plunge the U.S. into thrid world chaos! Do these people hate America that much? The absolute hatred coming out of this convention is scary! Barack Obama was elected President of the United States by an over whelming majority. The policies he's implementing are the exact same ones he ran his campaign one. And the American people elected him. You don't like his policies fine. No one will. Not even Democrats. If they don't work, the American people will not re-elect him. GWB dragged us into a war based on lies, he should have been impeached. But you didn't hear Democrats talking about over throwing the government or any other such nonsense. The Republican leadership....if they have any......had better get control of whats going on, and better do it fast.

David M. Loucas, MD   February 27th, 2009 11:27 am ET

It does little good to wave banners of fear like the boogieman or socialism. This is just another empty-headed republican ploy. It is yet another scare tactic from another borg-like republican clone from the collective state of denial. Clearly Mr. Demint has nothing more to offer than fear words. He, like his coven of like thinkers, fails to take responsibility for the enabling, co-dependent actions that fostered the heinous and disastrous outcomes of that Incompetent-In-Chief in the white house for the past eight years.

Mr. Demint needs to be reminded about what the message of the 2008 presidential election was all about. He still has not received the message from the American people: We don’t believe you; we don’t trust you, and we really don’t care what you say when you engage in that mindless exercise you call thinking.

USA LOVER   February 27th, 2009 11:27 am ET

To the person spouting how the Democrats have run Congress for "years", technically you are correct, as the number TWO qualifies as years. BUT THAT IS EXACTLY "ONE" Congressional Term... FOR SIX OF BUSH'S EIGHT YEARS, REPUBLICANS RAN THE HOUSE AND SENATE...

republicans.. your arguments are disinguous. period.

THANK GOD President Obama is pulling the curtain back on ALL of the budgetary shennanigans of the last 8 years....

the Iraq war should have ALWAYS been counted in the budget.

Libby   February 27th, 2009 11:27 am ET

I saw a quote in an article about the new budget proposal: "We are all going to have to make sacrifices to make this work."

As an American I am willing to make the sacrifices necessary, but I expect to be able to choose what I will sacrifice. With big government, those choices will be taken away or will be dictated. The reason that I oppose big government is that it requires us to have less control over our own lives. My interpretation of that is: We have less freedom.

I would like to know what others think about this.

JR   February 27th, 2009 11:27 am ET

If Obama is selling Socialism, what is the GOP selling? Fascism?

Deb   February 27th, 2009 11:27 am ET

The nerve of all this criticism when the Republicans are the reason we are in such a downward spiral. After almost ten years of doing what they wanted and trashing our economy they now worry about a big government? President Obama is working as best he could with the disaster he inherited. South Carolina is third in high unemployment...please Senator look in your backyard before you cast stones.

JKT   February 27th, 2009 11:27 am ET

People who keep putting down Socialism have never tried it. Go live in Denmark or Sweden for a while...see how nice it is. Socialism isn't the boogeyman.

Cecil   February 27th, 2009 11:27 am ET

This is so funny. Everyone else's fault but the repubs. Let's just call people names and criticize because we have No new ideas and everything is fine. There is a reason why repubs in Congress are becoming an endangered species, YOU CANNOT ADAPT NOR RECOGNIZE THE NEED TO CHANGE. Maybe 2010 will be a wake up call since you hit the snooze button in 2006 and again in 2008.

LIP   February 27th, 2009 11:27 am ET

Can we please get it right. Stop confusing the budget with the deficit. Bush inherited a deficit from Clinton and Obama inherited a deficit from Bush. Obama is bragging that he will cut his deficit in half, but this amount will still be greater than what Bush inherited from Clinton. Spending more is not the solution to anything, but providing more entitlement programs which is what the Democrats are good at doing. It buys votes for them and that is it.

Chelle in Fla   February 27th, 2009 11:27 am ET

well why don't we let the banks fail and see what happens??? sounds like tahat's what the republicans want done. DO NOThing

George   February 27th, 2009 11:26 am ET

A billionaire am acquainted with told me 2 yrs ago "am not a Republican, but thanks to GWBush tax cuts he has made me a wealthier man". So then it is fair to say that during the Bush years the rest of the 95% of the country was living in a oligarchy. Dont recall any of the current pool of conservative politicians currently crying out loud "socialism" accusing GWBush of plutocracy. The Republicans party has become the party of whinners, looser s but most of all "the Party of Hypocrasy".

Karen   February 27th, 2009 11:26 am ET

So Sen. Demint why don't you tell us how you did it in South Carolina. Oh wait it is one of the poorest states in the union well except for that little tax haven for the wall street club in Charlotte. What a slick manipulator you are. Use inflammatory words and incite people to riot over what!!!! Fairness being introduced in the system. What happens then your rich buddies who bought you that seat in the Senate might not have as much money to line your pockets with. Where were your cries of outrage when for 8 years this credit card bill was being run up. When outrageous mortgages were being sold to people. When people were dying in hospital waiting rooms because there was not enough people to see them and lack of any care until they were dying. Who will feed and cloth their children. So here is my inflammatory word – you sir are a fascist! Serving your corporate non-human masters.

If a republican is against it, then it must be good for the country, because they don't want anyone in this country to succeed. They are hoping by keeping everyone down they can boost themselves up. WRONG. Americans can grown up and so should the do nothing party.

George Jackson   February 27th, 2009 11:26 am ET

I prefer what President Obama is selling, whatever you want to call it rather than having my country in the toilet, where it currently resides. Thanks to the Republicans, America is in the tank.

They have NO authority to criticize anyone.

red   February 27th, 2009 11:26 am ET

I think that everyone here needs a clue... so here it goes

100 Senators
435 Congress men/women
1 President
9 Supreme Court Justices
this equals 545 people that are directly responsible for the domestic problems that plague this great country. if they want war there is war, if they want big and complicated government well guess what? if you have an issue contact your representative then let them know how you really fell, but ya know what not a single one out here will even bother.. So stew in your own juices America you elected them...

susie   February 27th, 2009 11:26 am ET

Helllloooooo......the Democrats have had power for the last two years, so stop blaming all the problems on the Republicans! An article on "Community Reinvestment Act" needs to be shown and show who is really at fault. It looks like the Dems have a lot of responsibility on the state of our economy.

yellowdoggie   February 27th, 2009 11:25 am ET

Its funny to me how so many people who respond here talk about how Republicans should shut up, stop the name calling, yadda yadda yadda, and then they turn around and do the same thing. The problem is that many that voted for Obama will have no part in anyone critisizing him. The great thing about our country is that we have at least two parties, we should have more, but that is better than one party controling our government. I am not happy with the Bush years, but it was not just him, it was Democrat's and Republicans in Congress as well. We should all be very wary of the path we are headed. To say that we should embrace socialism, which I believe we already have many socialist programs in action, is to say our founding fathers were wrong to want to prosper as individuals when they came to this great land. Rome did not fall in a day, it was a slow erosion of the system. I believe that is what we are seeing today. You can call it being progressive, I call it moving away from our values and eroding what is truly important.....dedication, the ability to overcome, smart personal decisions, restraint, and many more. Our Government is becoming to big and we will all pay the price for that soon.

RIDLEY ADAMS   February 27th, 2009 11:25 am ET

Is Jim Demint rich? Will he give up his pay along with the other GOP idiots to the homeless who haven't been doing the job they were elected to do for the last 8 years or longer? Did he sound the warning sirens when Bush was messing up and spending money? Did Mr. Demint call 911 when China was sending us tainted goods or flooding our markets with cheap low quailty merchandise with inflated prices. Did Mr. Demint call 911 when there were so many illegals in our towns, that I thought I was on vacation in Mexico. A letter to you!

Dear Mr. Demint:
Please go back in your closet and take the GOP with you!!!! You have been hiding along with McCain, Jindal, Shelby, and Mr. Boehner while the FAT CATS OF WALLSTREET, your friends SHOPLIFTED America.

Kevin   February 27th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Republicans have given up on calling their opponents' LIBERAL. Their new buzz word is "SOCIALIST".

Well Senator DeMint, I'd rather have our president's socialism than your excrement.

TS   February 27th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Randy – Obama has only been in office a little over a month. You gave GWB 8 years. Can't you give Obama some time too.

xargaw   February 27th, 2009 11:24 am ET

How many times does DeMint have to be completely discredited before the media ignores him?

New Yorker   February 27th, 2009 11:24 am ET

"rightsaid" is wrong. Even the few of the honest democrats will admit that their hand in the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac debacle sent us spiraling. Stop trying to blame the GOP;some of them may be corrupt /immoral but not as many as in the democratic party. That's a fact.

Barbara C   February 27th, 2009 11:24 am ET

It is surprising to me that the Republicans are so resistant to the government doing what it is supposed to do. Take care of its citizens. They should do what is good for the majority, not the minority. If we don't care for the least of us, what then is the purpose of government? The rich don't need government, they just like to use government for their own selfish needs. That is exactly why we are in this position. We need to re-build our schools, help our kids pay for their education (the more educated the people, the better the economy; they should not have to go into "indentured servitude" to pay for an education); provide health care for our citizens – how can other countries provide health care? Why are drugs more here than anywhere else? We can do so much forbusiness and the wealthy, lets start doing for everyone else.

Shawn L   February 27th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Listen to me people, this is sad. Many great minds have said a house(nation) divided will fall. If we are going to have democrats AND republicans for the "health" of the nation then don't both of them have to actually be concerned with the state of the nation? I'm sorry people but why do we need a two party system when one of the parties is only concerned with themselves, GOP! "All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent." T. Jefferson – listen to the man

john   February 27th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Matt   February 27th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Criticise policy, don't call the President of the USA a socialist. Typical GOP character attacks. Perhaps the GOP should fulfill their role as the opposition party and help drive legislation to the "middle".

Man O Man   February 27th, 2009 11:24 am ET

So it's socialism when we spend tax dollars on to rebuild our own infrastructure and help our own people and to try to get us off the oil addiction by investing in future technologies. But it's what, capitalism when the same tax dollars are spent on social programs and infrastructure rebuilding in Iraq? On a $10,000,000,000 a month war in Iraq that Cheney and Rumsfeld scoffed at ever costing more than $80 billion a trillion dollars ago? And as for socialism, GW open those gates in the fall by his Goldman Sachs CEO giving $30 billion to his corrupt cronies with no strings attached. The republicans era is ending. They are becoming relics of the past. As Palin said in a right-wing radio show last fall, "God will decide who wins on November 4." Well, thank GOD for that.

Todd   February 27th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Hey Neel!! Shut Up!! How's that for idea. Not for Barrack, but for you and your bleeding heart buddies on here!

You Libs did nothing but complain for 8 years – even when you controlled both Houses during that time (Oh, and did less than any other time in history with that control). It IS our turn to whine and complain. You all act like no Republican has ever lost a job, a house, or a life due to this crap! We have and will continue to do so – even more now with Dictator Obama at the reigns!!

Funny thing is – even with no house and no job, not one of your lost your computer!!!!

tony   February 27th, 2009 11:23 am ET

So, based on the result of the last election as well as the state of the economy, are the Republicans the world's worst salesmen of capitalism and conservatism?

Pat Riot   February 27th, 2009 11:23 am ET

Don't blaim capitalism. We haven't had true capitalism in almost 100 years. If you understood the function of the Federal Reserve system and the business cycle you people would understand that our biggest enemy is more government. The closest thing to a free market capitalist society is Hong Kong. This region was also recently voted the most free nation in the world. Does it really sound ok for the government to have more regulations on the people than the people on government? Socialism is not the answer to problems created by central planning. Don't you people get it? This is simple government 101. A powerful government is dangerous to the freedom of its citizens. Government is not efficient and it is not sympathetic. Government is force...Period! The force to take from one by means of coercion and give to another.

Mike   February 27th, 2009 11:23 am ET

He is just a snake oil salesman(obama).

Anne   February 27th, 2009 11:23 am ET

If the Republicans had a plan for fixing the mess they got us into they would not be using these buzz words. They are still trying to rule by fear – it drove this country to the brink yet I have not heard one new idea out of their hatefilled mouths. They just do not get it.

Republican in Oklahoma   February 27th, 2009 11:23 am ET

I agree but what alternatives to the republican offer other than more of the same as last 30 years that got us in this mess?

I think these failed businesses need to go away (pure capitalist here) but many people in both parties (including GW Bush) that that would be a dissaster right now.

So what can we do?

Nancy   February 27th, 2009 11:23 am ET

The Republican Party has become a joke! It is the party of no ideas and has made a business out of "The Sky is Failling" routine. They are going to have a real hard time attracting new and young voters. I am really tired of people believing that ONLY THEY work hard and have a work ethic. We have huge problems in this country, and at least we now have an administration that actually DOING something. Will they make mistakes- yes. Will they try to correct it-probably. Keep moving forward-President Obama. And to think I use to be registered as a Republican.

Todd M   February 27th, 2009 11:22 am ET

The Republicans must try new arguments. These names didn't work 4 months ago before the election and they don't work now. I don't recall any Republican other than Ron Paul decrying the profligate spending of the eight years under Bush.
The name calling won't work because the public sees the spending criticism as hypocrisy. No one is buying it.
I am so disappointed. It's like they're not even trying.

Sama Mondeh   February 27th, 2009 11:22 am ET

The Senator has his facts mixed up and off base. He has probably forgotten how this country got in the mess that President Obama is trying to fix. Partisan polics has its place, but this is certainly not the time. The country needs serious thinking from all citizens to get out of this economic malaise occasioned by eight years of republican, conservative ideology. I will take Obama's "socialism" any day over what we are now going through.

chelle   February 27th, 2009 11:22 am ET

Nadine...what precisely happened in Canada?? For one – we aren't socialist...we have SOCIAL PROGRAMS much like yours – except we also have universal health care – our unemployment plan is more efficient – our retirement plan is similar. So stop pointing fingers at Canada as some scary socialist country. For another – the USSR was not merely socialist – in case you hadn't noticed – it was a dictatorship run by inhuman monsters. Being socialist doesn't equate with a lack of democracy. Many socialist governments have been elected democratically. Another thing is that Americans are terrified of the spectre of socialism without even KNOWING what it is!!! Uneducated use of a word does not make it true.

But hey – cut taxes and leave it at that...that'll help build schools, hospitals and get you out of the recession. Every other nation in the industrial world is having similar problems and taking similar action but hey you are the US – you ALWAYS know best!!!!

Chad   February 27th, 2009 11:22 am ET

Thanks Jim DeMint for speaking the truth!!
More government is NOT the answer.
The scariest phrase in the English language is "I'm from the government and I'm here to help you."

deanz   February 27th, 2009 11:22 am ET

Is he wrong?
You folks on the left side of the aisle are so enamored with centralized government, take good look at the happenings over there in Europe. It's not all berries and cream. Things may be bad here, but its worse over there. And Jay... If you love Sweden so much perhaps that is where you ought to be. Limited government (not no government) is how this nation became the greatest the world has ever known. This is how American Exceptionalism was born. More of Washington DC is not going to make the situation better.

Doug, New Jersey   February 27th, 2009 11:22 am ET

Ian   February 27th, 2009 11:21 am ET

Here is a politician that relies on sensationalism to get re-elected. Ignorant comments like this make our country look bad. Socialism is a label used by Republicans, just like liberal, to get votes. He knows that this country is not even close to being considered Socialist, but he uses the term to try and spark fear in his constituents' minds. If Republicans think there is overspending then say that we are overspending, but don't try and make the United States look foolish by calling it Socialism.

Alicia February 27th, 2009 10:37 am ET - You cracked me up. Totally accurate. Bitter old Kentucky Fried Cracker

Brad: February 27th, 2009 10:36 am ET - What we have now is not pure capitalism anyway. Regulations and agencies that made sense and acted as safeguards to the system have been dismantled by interested parties with successful lobbyists. These folks have serious financial interests in staying at the top of the economic food chain and have benefited handsomely from stacking the deck. Pure capitalism thrives when the playing field is level.

it wasn't socialism when, starting with reagan, republicans started funneling money to the wealthiest of the nation. all that did was result in the greatest concentration of wealth in the richest 1% of country since ... you guessed it – the great depression. for the past 30 years, money has been flowing one direction, and we wonder why we end up where we're at.

i find it amusing that the corporate welfare that we've had, especially for the past 8 years, was nothing but good ol' capitalism, yet when we actually try to help out people who could actually use it ... oh my god, we're socialists!!!

IDU   February 27th, 2009 11:20 am ET

As a resident of Arkansas, I deeply regret that we have stuck Mike Huckabee on the U. S. He has one agenda–whatever Mike wants, Mike gets. Other than that, just a little blind ambition is all that keeps him going.

Oh, yes, more tax breaks for the ultra rich.

Will   February 27th, 2009 11:20 am ET

Jim Demint and Mike Huckabee have been the purveyors of Fascism for the past ten years in their support for Bush and other republicans. So who are they to slander Barack Obama? Mike Huckabee, it appears, is nothing more than a petty gossip (amongst other things).

$630 billion to overthrow a sovereign nation, okay with that. $780 billion to rebuild America, socialist or communist. That, my friends, is the mentality of the current Republican party and consequently the reason they are where they are.

tolstoi   February 27th, 2009 11:20 am ET

Most of the people who are afraid of socialism don't really understand what it is. Socialist policies don't always lead to Communist governments.

Do we want to have military troops walking the streets, do we want free speech, pay attention people"

I'm not sure whether Huckabee, DeMint, Boner, Palin and the like are more stupid or more dangerous. Anyone who suggested "taking to the streets" to reverse Bush's policies of domestic spying on people like me (an Iraq veteran who deployed and called home), unnecessary and costly invasions of sovereign countries, and general erosion of 95% of the Bill of Rights (all but the second half of the Second Amendment) would end up in a secret prison or GitMo.

I'd never ever ever think I'd wish this on anyone but...hopefully these guys will get brain cancer and die.

Latoones   February 27th, 2009 11:19 am ET

That's what I love about coming to the CNN website. No matter what's going on in your part of the world, you can always get a real big dose of reality or not here. For goodness sake, our president has only been in office for a little over a month. He was literally given a raw deal when he entered office and he knew what he was getting into and didn't back away from it. He's trying to get us out of this black hole that the past administrator did. So while we're laying blame and criticizing him, why not do this . . either be part of the problem or part of the solution. I choose the latter. President Obama, I stand by you wholeheartedly. Remember, the last time I checked, you have to spend money in order to make money and from where I stand, he's trying to do just that!!!

Isaac   February 27th, 2009 11:19 am ET

If we slide into Socialism, it isn't Obama's fault. Rather, it's the failure of capitalism on Wall Street that is to blame.

Roy   February 27th, 2009 11:19 am ET

As USUAL, the Republicans beat the drum.....they have a word....Socialism......they are not sure what it means.....they just know it grabs headlines.

These Republicans would rather more people lose their jobs, and the country fall further into decline, JUST SO they can look forward to the next elections. SHAME on these Republicans...........I will remember all this in the next election, who helped with a plan when the economy was down, and who sat on the side and just called names..........it's all about PARTY FIRST PARTY FIRST for the Republicans.......heck with the country.

SOUTHIE   February 27th, 2009 11:19 am ET

Where was he when Bush was making his agenda changes. Oh, he's a Repulican't...
Never mind.

Erika, KS   February 27th, 2009 11:19 am ET

As a former lifelong democrat now registered independent, I'd have more respect for the democrats if they would stop ranting about republicans and Bush, because, as I recall, democrats helped Bush and the republicans out tremendously.

Democrats in Congress gave in to every whim that Bush wanted. Democrats have no leg to stand on. They had control for the past two years, yet they did NOTHING! Prices continued to go up with them in charge. They are weak and spineless. They can take their share of the blame, if they want to play the blame game.

gsawalker   February 27th, 2009 11:19 am ET

I am an INDEPENDENT!! Both parties have issues!! The Democrats have been in control in the Congress for years, so don't defend them and then blame the Republicans for all the spending and problems we are in today. Both parties participated in and adopted all the spending and ALL the problems we have. NOW, only the democrats have the power since the republicans are in the minority. There is no balance of power!! I only hope and pray the socialist plans, the OUTRAGEOUS spending President Obama is pushing through both houses doesn't put us all into the worst financial condition ever....

Daisy   February 27th, 2009 11:19 am ET

Just Obama one person alone can not fix America economy. We ALL have to stand behind Mr. President to back him. we ALL have to work hard and save and invest if we want America to have a future. Just blame, blame, blame, blame is of no use. Shut up. GOP. think of a better solution, not just opposition. Jindal. you have been used. speak your heart. don't get used by the GOP machine.

Ed from Wisconsin   February 27th, 2009 11:19 am ET

Are you serious Republicans? Bush runs the the debt up to 12 trillion, starts a unjustified war in Iraq that cost 10 billion a month and makes policies which helped to cripple are economy. The Republicans didn’t have anything to say, they were there cheerleading the the former president on his ridiculous spending frenzy’s. Furthermore, there is nothing fiscal conservative about the GOP’s agenda, they wrote the book on wasteful spending. They did it for 8 years straight! Now the new administration has to clean up their mess, and all they want to do is be the party of opposition. Why do they want the American economy to fail?

neil   February 27th, 2009 11:19 am ET

Between what bush spent and what obama is spending has anyone figured how long we taxpayers are going to take to pay this off and how much it is for each of us?????? The blind cheering of this is like setting your house on fire to warm up rather than putting a sweater on.

eric   February 27th, 2009 11:18 am ET

To the geniuses that keep saying the republican have no ideas and want to complain about us bashing the administration I have two words for you; SHUT UP You are the same morons that blamed Bush for everything and complained about everything that he did. When you are a minority in the house and are unable to give ideas because Pelosi and Reid say that they are in power and it doesn't matter what republicans say it is a sad state in this country. For all of you loons that like this socialist program please name me one place in this world that is has worked.

Obviously, socialism should be the least of our concerns with liberal whacks like you who feel it necessary to "censor" and kill the "Freedom of Speech". Excellent philosophy...if we can't shut them up, don't let them have air time...more of the liberal "Fairness Doctrine" at work. Hey!!! Foolish senators!!!!

The reason he had to have this big of a budget is....

1. He inherited a complete mess.
2. He incorporated the two wars that your boy Bush got us into.
3. He's trying to get us back on the right track while incorporating new ideas and plans. Its always better to start new things and plans during bad times rather than good times. If we are in a low, you might as well scrap somethign and start fresh (healthcare, energy, etc.)

Vote your local Republican out.

RTinVA   February 27th, 2009 11:18 am ET

I'm so tired of hearing this. The Republican broke the government, bankrupted us economically and morally, and now they breed the same fear mongering with rhetoric straight from Karl Rove. They call the Obama administration socialists, but their ilk, caring only about power and policies that promote unbridled greed, would be quite comfortable as leaders of the Communist Party.

Terry in Iowa   February 27th, 2009 11:18 am ET

This is simply irresponsible rhetoric and comes from the same place as McCarthyism. These aren’t leaders, but pathetic fear mongers.

Over the last two administrations, 16 years, the Republicans have held the majority in the House for 12 (consecutive mind you); six of these with control of the White House. In the Senate, they held the majority for 10, four when they also held the White House.

Democrats aren’t blameless, but give me a break. The facts are: our infrastructure has gone to hell. Our education system has fallen way behind. We handed our energy policy over to big oil. We neglected to go after those who are responsible for 911. We invaded a sovereign nation based on lies and ulterior motives. We deregulated the banking industry into oblivion. US Manufacturing industries are all but dead. Our health care system is crushing us. What have they been doing for the last two decades?

I'll tell, you they have been masking and ignoring the real problems of this nation with the mantra of cut taxes, cut taxes. Yea that's worked real well. Have you checked the deficit lately?

It’s time for all of them to put up or shut up.

In my 46 years, I’ve never seen any politician work as hard or take on the job with so much personal responsibility and willingness to be held accountable, as I’ve seen in just Obama's first 30 days in office.

So with all the respect due, Sen. DeMint and Mr. Huckabee, shut the hell up.

JD   February 27th, 2009 11:18 am ET

Repubs think Socialism is so horrible – "take from the rich and give to the poor". I guess their alternative – "ignore the poor and give more to the rich" is democracy? If that's the defintion, I'll take the fairness of socialism. In both cases, the rich are still rich.

Ray Lawson from Danville, VA   February 27th, 2009 11:18 am ET

Some people seem to be surprised that President Obama is pushing such a socialist agenda. I guess they weren't paying attention during the last 2 years. Everyone had fair warning but they ignored it. I'm glad some of the republicans are finally waking up.

New Yorker   February 27th, 2009 11:17 am ET

Ira – You are right about one thing, "Socialism calls for near or complete equality.." , and the problem with that is it discourages responsible living by penalizing people who work for a living and rewarding people who want to leech off of others' earnings. It's a very unfair system and has dire consequences.

To the rest of you foolish bloggers, just because it's hot in the frying pan doesn't mean we should jump into the fire. I say bite the bullet: suffer the consequences of the financial market, even if it means a full blown depression, and start over again. It's better than losing our freedom.

A San Francisco non-believer   February 27th, 2009 11:17 am ET

And DeMint is a poster boy for stupidity. Oh sorry, that's an insult to all of the stupid people in the U.S. (many are the voters of S.C. for putting an imbecile like DeMint into office). hey, DeMint why don't you consult your bible to find the solution to our economic, energy, health care and education problems. Can't find anything there? That's it's based on the same pack of lies you espouse. Why don't you just your ignorant mouth!

james   February 27th, 2009 11:17 am ET

Doesn't the South Carolina flag still contain the flag of the Confederacy within it?? So DeMint would have the Facist States of America. He's got lots of cotton to plant down on the plantation. Maybe Huckabee could spare a few slaves to help him get'r'dun, while they could set back on the veranda sippin' mint juleps, watchin' all those darkies a sweatin' an toilin' in the noon day sun. How about South Carolina just succeed from the union, I'm sure they could make it fine all on their own. Anybody who agrees could just travel on down there, I'm sure the'll find lots to do, with one of the nation's highest unemployment rates. 'Dimwit's' got plenty uh field work for y'all!

arnie   February 27th, 2009 11:17 am ET

I guess we wouldn't have to bail out th banks if your friends that you gave tax cuts to than wreck the economy. Better yet we wouldn't have to borrow tons of money to try to get back on track. It like a bank robbery and you handed them the gun. If Obama is going down the road of socilism the Republicans paved the way.

Jodi, NC   February 27th, 2009 11:17 am ET

I guess the senator and other conservatives are oppsed to social security and medicare too. i wonder if they will refuse their social security checks and medicare benefits when they become eligible. Public schools schools? Social security? Medicare? Unemployment checks? We've been a socialist country for decades already. These fear mongering bums are confusing socialism with communism. They really don't know the difference, yet the fearful right wingers still follow them lock-step. It's really quite sad.

Oh and to the guy who said socialism doesn't work, we're still nowhere near modern day europe when it comes to socialism. Western europe seems to be about as rich and well off as we have been, so you can't just flat out say socialism doesn't work. It's communism that doesn't work. These fear mongering conservatives really should learn the difference between the two.

Marc   February 27th, 2009 11:17 am ET

Virginia – Thanks to post the complete definition of 'socialism' according to the Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. Now in answer to your question/affirmation, you forgot one thing – In socialist based governments, the property is taken by force, without any warning and consideration.
Take a look at what has been happening in Bolivia, Venezuela and Ecuador, THAT is socialism (or a very populist version of it).
So far I can't see any hint that the current administration has the objective of erradicate the private ownership. OK, there's this thing with the banks but it's the same solution that Europe has been used on their banks, and like there, it's supposed to be a temporary situation.
Do you have any proofs that it won't be?
Like Huckabee and DeMint..., you don't seem to have any.

At some point, republicans will have to understand that the old ideology of the past is not going to work. At some point, they'll need to abandon the Rush playbook and start asking Americans the what it is that we're looking for. In the meantime, its the same old GOP Neo Conservative Crap.

My fellow Republicans once accused Franklin Roosevelt of promoting socialism and even communism through the New Deal; the result of his policies then and during World War II was a rebirth of American capitalism with a global reach. I am an Obamacon (a conservative who voted for Obama), and I am confident that his policies will give birth to a bigger, better, and more democratic capitalism in the U.S. and around the world.

What Obama is doing is simply forcing the trickle-down to take place because the GOP's version of trickle-down economics, i.e., trusting the rich and corporate America to let go of their stranglehold on the nation's wealth AND THE MEANS TO MAKE MORE OF IT, has proven to be completely idiotic. Altruism is the first thing flushed down the $30,000 toilet to make more room for more wealth.

Jim   February 27th, 2009 11:13 am ET

@ Jim in Texas,

Do you know nothing of how the tax system works? It is TAXABLE INCOME that will see the increase in rates. This does not equal revenue. If you have expenses for managing and running the business such as supplies, payroll and the like THAT IS ALL TAX DEDUCTIBLE! You obviously don't own or operate a business. If you do I sure hope you aren't the one doing your taxes, if you are you've likely been boning yourself and paying way too much.

It appears to me that Sen. DeMent's comments are veiled threats ... that imply some sort of violence. Yes I know , he would strongly deny that was the hidden message in his comments and truly I doubt that violence is what he wants. He just wants to use a very veiled threat of violence in his attempt to push back at President Obama's approach to addressing the issues of the day. Hoping that the treat of violence will slow the proccess... I didn't vote for Obama but I do believe that his approach (bipartisan and relatively open) has merit even if I don't agree with everything that he proposes. Senator DeMent on the other hand is just another example of narrow minded, take no prisioners approach that the party I was once proud of now takes. I'm beginning to think that I'll may never find another republican that I can vote for!!

Ever since this country was founded by radical liberals who had the audacity to believe that a leader should be chosen by men, not ordained by God, conservatives have had difficulty adjusting to our ideals. Their only answer now is to resort to whining and name calling in a futile attempt to rally the people. Happily, so far, the people aren't falling for their anti-American screed.

Another Constructive idea from the State of SC. It's nice to know that politicians from a state that's last in everything still think they should tell the rest of the country how to fix the problems that they help cause.

It be nice instead of throwing around big words they don't understand they could try and actually come up with an original idea. Of course what do you expect from a state who blames their high unemployment on failed drug test.

Can we drug test the US Senate? I think the ones from SC are high on ego and stupidity.

Newsflash!! Hey, I am not saying Republicans are perfect, but moving forward in this nation is going to take the help of all...not just the Democrats posting on this blog! Let's not forget that it was old Democratic ideas (i.e. lending to those who should never have been in their own home – equality for all) that started this mess. Bush was just stuck with the bag when the house came down. If you guys are all on board with Obama's policies...then what was so wrong with George Bush? He grew the government just like a good Democrat! I got it now...Hope = the largest U.S. deficit times four. Can I have my vote back Mr. Obama...John McCain is looking better and better!

John W. Olver   February 27th, 2009 11:12 am ET

Let's see, conservatives have so far called for any acts to stop the President (Alan Keyes- "Barack Obama Must Be Stopped"), now open insurrection (Jim DeMint – “take to the streets to stop America’s slide into socialism.”). They have called Pres. Obama a socialist, communist, a facist, and a terrorist. They have equated him with Hitler, Stalin and Lenin, continue to question his citizenship and called for his arrest and deportation.

A conservative supreme court has already thrown out the citizenship garbage and Obama's birth certificate has been posted on line and validated by FactCheck.org.

Calls for Obama to be stopped by any means or the nation will fall should be investigated by the secret service because they are treasonous.

The failed ideas of the Republican Party since Reagan have left us with a nation in shambles economically and very much weakened geopolitically. Republicans, even when the majority of Americans disagree with them, think that only their ideas can possibly be good ideas and any others are anti American .

They might very well be worked into a frenzy over Democratic policies under any circumstances but the questioning of his citizenship and the constant drumbeat of communist, alien, Hitler, etc. would never be in the mix if Obama were a white man. The Republican Party has descended into paranoid racism. I hope some rational conservatives either gain control of the Party or break off and form a new and true conservative party soon.

Meanwhile I hope the wingnuts that will be inspired by Keyes, DeMint, Huckabee and others are stopped before they go over the edge.

So what's really wrong with socialism? Anybody who's spent any time in Europe knows that the people in those countries, especially the elderly and disadvantaged, enjoy a standard of living and quality of life that we can only dream about in this country. As America becomes more socialistic, the higher we'll be able to hold our heads in the western community of nations.

REPUBLICANS = the party of NAME CALLING!!

Where was their SOLUTIONS?

Where was their HEALTHCARE REFORM PLAN?

Where was their TAX CUTS FOR THE WEALTHY??

Where was their REGULATION OF WALL STREET?

Where was their SOCIALISM CONCERN when they were spending billions and billions of our money??

Yep.... ALL these southern dick-heads do is "name call or finger pointing". SO TYPICAL and so very old, Americans are SICK and TIRED of the name calling and the whining, WE WANT TO HEAR THE GOP'S SOLUTIONS!!

Is that silence I hear..........?

Dieter Zerressen, Denver, CO   February 27th, 2009 11:12 am ET

All this takeover stuff started when Republican chickens finally came home to roost and 8 years of trickle down economic theory – 16 if you count the Reagan years, as you should. Let Obama have a chance to pull these irons out of the fire, stabilize these industries and turn them back over to private control with some reasonable oversight.

Siegfried Schrfanz   February 27th, 2009 11:12 am ET

A Canadian with roots in Germany and Austria, relatives in Chicago, a business background and an MBA, and a retired teacher rejoices in the measures undertaken by your President Obama. He is indeed a blessing for the USA and the world in his proactive policies to improve medical care for everyone, for restoring stability in the financial market and to reduce foreclosures and engage in a proactive and responsible foreign policy. Keep supporting him, you guys, and expose irrational comments and criticisms for their lack of economic understanding and lack of community awareness.

Well I have to quit my job so i can live as good as my neighbor. He is jobless and recieves government money. He eats better than me because they have food stamps. His house is 3 times better than mine and the government is going to basically give it to him because he cant afford it. And when the housing market goes up he will be able to sell it for a major profit. Me on the other hand have worked hard and had a job my whole life. Had to save money to buy a house and car. And I have to pay for my food myself but my reckless living jobless neighbor has it better than me now and will profit from it. Well now you can pay for me too and i wont have to pay for him. America what a dream.

More of the same types of comments here. Democrats bashing Republican, Republicans bashing Democrats. I think that each and every one who responds in here is no better then a home town gossip. Not a one of you know what you are even talking about. Each one of you pick facts out of thin air or you pick a fact that will help make your case. I don't care who you are Dem or Repub, the problems facing this country are born from Greed!!! Greed by the big corporations, the corrupt politicians that get elected every term, and yes, even the average American citizen who puts their wants above everyone else's needs. American is Doomed unless we stop the bickering and get into Action as a Nation. America, stop thinking as an indivdual and start thinking as a Nation of people who care for others. We think too much about the safety and welfare of other nations while our nation and it's people continue to suffer.

susanb   February 27th, 2009 11:10 am ET

Fact: Bush inherited a budget surplus from Clinton. He turned that into a budget deficit.

Fact: The national debt when Bush took office was $5 trillion and heading steadily downward.

When Bush left office, the national debt was $10 trillion.

Debt – from $5 trillion to $10 trillion under 8 years of Republican rule.

And the Republicans now think we should take them seriously when they spout their fiscal conservatism?

Please..... can we say HYPOCRISY !!!

What a bunch of vile, arrogant, delusional idiots.

The U.S. will never be the same. We will not have incentives to work harder - we will demand four day work weeks with two hour lunches and will be paid equal and live in box homes. We will be Europe. Hey, if something slowly evolves you won't really notice it to be true. Mark you calendars today and then take a hard look in three or four years and you will notice how America will have changed.

Thanks to the "I want my handout" bunch and "I don't want to work" bunch. You have all brought us down and you either don't know it or you are fine with it.

Helen, NY   February 27th, 2009 11:10 am ET

It is a sad day for America. We have a radical socialist president in the white house. Add fuel to the fire, he says that he was voted in by Americans in last November. He is dishonest. He took advantage of Financial crisis and got elected. People now realize what he is doing now to destroy our country. There will be rationing of health-care, rationing of food and other essential commodities. Get ready for suffering and poor days ahead. Unemployment will rise because small businesses and corporations will not be able to hire people with tax increase, capital gain tax increase. In the coming four years, our country will go to the socialism and we will be spending several years of our lives to correct this situation. There will be no respect internationally for our economy and our currency. We have a total destroyer in the white house. Wake up America.

Brian from Fort Mill, SC   February 27th, 2009 11:10 am ET

Conservatism is not dead, but it is on life support. I'm sure it will come back, but not anytime soon.

Capitalism is also on life support. And President Obama is the defibrillator.

Now, let's talk about socialism. Social Security is socialist. Medicare and Medicaid are socialist. The Public School system is socialist. The police forces in all cities and towns are socialist.

Capitalism, in and of itself, is not the problem. The problem is when our leaders try to remove the safeguards to protect us against greed and corruption. We all know that pure capitalism never worked. That's because pure capitalism is based on two things: need and greed. That's why we have all these "bubbles" that burst, that take down the economy every ten or so years.

Jim DeMint should change his name to Jim DeMented!

Socialism may appear to provide less uncertainty in a time of uncertainty, however we have to resist this temptation. At our heart America is a country dedicated to Democracy and Free Markets. You own your family business, your home, your car. You choose your doctor, your plumber, your place of employment. Our hard work and entrapreneurial spirit is what made us a great economy and a great nation and that is what will help us to get out of this recession/depression. We have to resist the urge to socialize, we have to resist the urge to borrow against our children's future and spend instead of facing our current economic problems ourselves. We need more fiscal responsibility not more pork spending disguised as stimulus.

Baloney, shoving socialism down our throats is not salesmanship. Of course is easy to sell socialism to those who won't be paying for it, at least right away. I do hope that those expecting to benefit from the new socialist regime will enjoy the monthly chicken and ten pounds of rice they will be receiving from Obama, as opposed to the oversized flat screen TV and two cars in the garage that they enjoyed compliments of capitalism and the free enterprise system. Hail to Obama and economic justice.

JW in JH   February 27th, 2009 11:09 am ET

I think that if a Republican didn't like the salmon in the Senate dining room, he'd accuse the chef of socialism.

If everyone hates socialism so much, let's get rid of the fire department and go back to Colonial times, when you had to pay to get firefighter protection. Let's also disband public libraries, public schools, city trash collection, and oh yeah, the police. Hire your own dang bodyguard if you're worried about crime!

Mike Chung   February 27th, 2009 11:08 am ET

We in Canada never fail to marvel at the doomsayers south of the border who weep and gnash their teeth while wailing at President Obama's valiant attempts to reverse severe economic conditions in the U.S. , partially caused by unchecked capitalism and outright human greed. "He's practicing Sociaslism!" goes the outrage. The ones who are crying foul, do so safe in the knowledge that their homes are fully paid for, their jobs secure, and there are three square meals on their tables every day. About time they look to the welfare of their fellow citizens who do not now have those luxuries.

Does the Senator really expect a market solution to our predicament when the private sector is so debt laden and unwilling to grant credit? Government is the only institution large enough to cover our major financial institution's staggering losses. It's the only institution resiliant enough to help in the long term scale our current economic situation requires. Plus... if Obama were really following in the footsteps of Stalin and Lenin, Congress would have been disbanded immediately after the inaugural parade and most likely executed. DeMint and Huckabee would be in some northern Alaskan gulag as quickly as it took them to make those comments. They and all US AM radio personalities be sitting on 24 x 9 inch benches attached to the wall of their respective windowless isolation cells. Ice cold water would be up to their ankles.

FF in PA   February 27th, 2009 11:07 am ET

You liberals are truly misinformed. Despite what Obama says, it wasn't Republican "tax cuts" that caused the current recession. It was government policy, pushed by both parties, that created the situation we're in.

We can now see Obama for what he is: the most radical, leftest president in American history. His agenda may sound appealing to many Americans but I'm not up for the change he's proposing. Have you been to Sweden? To Germany? Nice places but the standard of living is nowhere near as well as ours. That's where Obama is taking us.

Libertarian   February 27th, 2009 11:07 am ET

Republicans need to understand that actually paying your fair share of taxes IS NOT SOCIALISM. Every time someone says "let's get the wealthy to pay their fair share" the Republicans cry socialism.

What about the OBSCENE amount of taxes I pay as someone making less than $75K per year? I can't hide my money in the Cayman Islands to avoid taxes.

Trouble is, American voters are generally ignorant. To accuse somebody of being a) liberal and b) a Leninist-Stalinist is just idiocity. Can somebody be a) a Nazi and b) a Zionist? The more I watch how people who cannot find Iraq on the map decide – through their elected representatives – what to do with a war in this country, the less glorious the concept of Democracy looks to me.

Too true. And soon, if we are forced to follow the policies of Comrade Kommisars Obama, Reid, & Pelosi, China and Cuba will look to us as examples of communist, socialist states.

Obama, Reid, & Pelosi are know-nothing bums who want to force their failed pipe dreams of communism down our throats. Anyone who is a REAL American sees the disaster these 3 are pushing. The solution is simple: Send Reid and Pelosi packing in 2010. And in 2012 do whatever you can so that Nobama can add to his list failed community organizer, and failed president. Then we can turn around to all those lib freaks who spewed "Jesus was a community organizer" and say "Yeah, well Jesus didn't fail like Obama did."

Keep REAL hope alive. Stay strong and soon the Dems will be out, then it can be time for REAL change to believe in.

If Jim DeMint has received a perfect rating from this group, just who does he stand for?
His party and their encouragement of corporate greed and deregulation that have gotten us into this mess.

The Clueless Elite of the GOP had a majority for most of Bush's 8 years and they signed on to every Pork Barrel idea and he signed off on them for all that time.

Their destruction of the Regulatory Process started with Reagan's Govt is the Problem and ended with – the waste in Iraq, the mess after Katrina, and the current World economoc disaster.

Now the only thing they can due is threats to take to the streets to stop the Socialists.

Are they going to bring back "Kill a Commie for Christ" bumpers stickers too?

Sniffit   February 27th, 2009 11:06 am ET

Well, at least we know why they all ran to the gun store when the sane portion of this country elected Obama because we liked his ideas and wanted them to be tried...the very ideas these guys are trying to mischaracterize as socialism to birth a new era of McCarthyistic paranoia. The 2nd Amendment blather is just a smokescreen. See, in their world the democracy they so fervently pretend to love and defend only matters when they control it and their ideas guide it. When the majority gets "uppity" and elects someone whose ideas they don't like, they have no problem rationalizing their way towards civil war. I believe Michael McToken called it "revolution" yesterday. I suppose it's not far from the truth though...the GOP is revolting (yeah yeah, a pun, so sue me hehe).

Until then, STFU.

Lenin for dummies   February 27th, 2009 11:04 am ET

I can't understand why "socialism" has become such a bad word anyway. Since when did the idea of fair and equal compensation become a poison to society. Monatarism HAS NOT WORKED over the last century (with the excpetion of a couple of years of boom due to market swoons) It's not like this administration is calling for a complete nationalization of industry and commerce! After years of the failure of Laisee-fair economics and un-regulated free for all for the gluttonous Wall Street jet set, I say maybe it IS about time for a revolution!

David   February 27th, 2009 11:04 am ET

We're all communists now. Totalitarists Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and Frank all tell us what we can do, and when we can do it. How much money we can have, and when and how we can spend it. Thank you for the socialist totalitarism. Where’s the Liberty?

Ryan, Denver   February 27th, 2009 11:04 am ET

Why are the Republicans trying to paint themselves as fanatical libertarians? Truth is they really do support socialism – socialism for the hyper-rich. Well, we now know what happens when you let monster coorporations hold all the cards in the deck.

Enforcer   February 27th, 2009 11:04 am ET

Listening to sour grapes Reps scum bugs, get a life!!! And what do you call Bush then if you call Obama a Socialist? Does that make Bush a communist?

Michael Polito   February 27th, 2009 11:04 am ET

Obama clearly has a Marxist temperment: he has spent a ton on these giant spending bills, and so he has to own them. Obama's left-wing vision will turn America into Europe: and what is Europe? An irrelevant, failed left-wing joke. All of Europe- from the former USSR to Britian: it crumbling under the leftists. Bush's spending was bad, no question, but that is no argument for even more!

George   February 27th, 2009 11:04 am ET

Once again another southern Republican politician opens up his mouth to spew absurd accusations based on fear. It appears that purveying fear is all these extreme conservatives have to offer to the American people. They offer no solutions to fix health care, unemployment, rising fuel prices other than invoke fear at every opportunity. The American public are no longer buying into this after 8 yrs of constant fear mongering. As for Huckleberry Hick perhaps he should consider running for president for the "Union of American Extremist Conservative Republics".

a party critize a bill that helped it's people so much I guess if it were for the top 1 percent it would have been alright.

Ray Fisher   February 27th, 2009 11:02 am ET

I think the Republicans are preparing to declare mental bancruptcy as they are stuck with the fear mongering as their last resort!!! The President is merely attempting to crawl out of the hole they created which requires tons of money at present, but socialism is more akin to the actions of the last days of the Bush administration. Bailouts are more socialistic than investing in new ideas. Within a year or two I predict we will have start new industries manufacturing products utilizing new energy technologies.

james   February 27th, 2009 11:02 am ET

As a US citizen and former republican who voted for Bush, I would take socialism over ignorant denial-ism and Bush-ism any day. Yea, let's just cut taxes and everything will be peachy. Give me a freakin break! Republicans have zero credibility and I'm surprised there are any left.

Lou   February 27th, 2009 11:02 am ET

Why is everyone blaming busy- this housing mismanagement happened on Clintons watch, not bushs, it spiraled on bush's watch and he did nothing to save it. Republican spending - it was more like the Republicans becoming like Democrats that caused spending to burst out of control, and now since the Democrats are in office, spending is OK with everyone - think about what you are saying - when the Republicans were in office under Clinton, was there not a surplus, and tax cuts - yes, plus the Repulbicans halted all the spending that the government (Clinton - Democrat) wanted to do, which helped to balance the budget - Then Republicans became like Democrats and engaged in spending, government grew and now we have Obama. Ken   February 27th, 2009 11:01 am ET

Psychologists can probably explain what it is that makes idealogues morph into demagogues, but it is happening to the GOP on a large scale.

It's kind of humorous to see the specific kind of ire directed at the President from the former slave states. It sort of sounds like they're starting to build a new case for secession . . .

An American   February 27th, 2009 11:01 am ET

Seems like "SOCIALISM" is the biggest buzzword among conservatives...

I think that the Obama administration needs an all-out marketing campaign to combat this rhetoric coming from the far-right.

Obama needs to convey to the public just what "socialism" actually means... and then display to the public why what he's doing is NOT by definition socialism.

The democrats neither WANT nor advocate "socialism." They're not trying to control the means of production, or have full government control over all all of the aspects of the economy– all they/we are advocating is to have better OVERSIGHT... better REGULATION... so that the economy doesn't take another downward spiral like this again. As for nationalizing of banks and such– the administration would have TEMPORARY control over SOME institutions– not total control over every aspect of banking. HUUUUGE difference. Regulation and better oversight is NOT the same as "socialism"!!!

To the Rush's and the Sean's and the far-right dittoheads out there... Obama is NOT a socialist!!! Left of center, yes, but no, not a socialist! Empty– but dangerous– rhetoric, coming from the left!!!

jim Cal   February 27th, 2009 11:00 am ET

People wanted this guy because people don't want responsibility. They want someone else, like government to take care of it. You can see it happening with our schools, laws, and youths. They are going to get what they voted for. I hope they be happy, I think not. I didn't vote for him.

Andi   February 27th, 2009 11:00 am ET

What a joke! Yeah, I hope the GOP does 'take it to the streets' to warn people about the upcoming conversion to socialism. I'd actually pay money to watch that. As if they knew any 'streets' in their home states!

And Huckabee's 'Lenin and Stalin would love this' shows his lack of education – Lenin and Stalin were Communists. Socialism is an economic system. Neither of those brutal dictators supported socialism, per se, they used the theories to 'sell' themselves to the people, but as we all know, they did not take care of anyone but themselves. If it had been Socialism, they wouldn't have had to 'purge' millions of their own people.

Johan Bc Canada   February 27th, 2009 11:00 am ET

Fundamentalist fear mongering, How to start a theocracy. They appeal to the not-so-well educated, to those who like the simplicity and comfort of being brainwashed. Even in this world-wide crisis they feel they have the luxury of playing politics, of obstructing those who are chosen to rebuild,

Joyce Becker   February 27th, 2009 11:00 am ET

Jim DeMint doesn't have a clue what he is talking about, he is so narrow in his thinking. He is out of touch with the times we are living in, Republican policies of 'give to the rich and it will trickle down to the poor' just won't work and never has, he will never get the message with his closed mind. At least President Obama is trying different ways of getting capitalism to work to help the country. I wish they would study what socialism and communism really is before they spread their fear tactics around for the uneducated to chew on, it really shows his ignorance.

Mr. Jonathan   February 27th, 2009 11:00 am ET

Anytime money is spent on important infrastructure, and social programs, they have to cry "socialism."
Do they even know what this country would be like if prior "socialist" programs had never existed?
I guess that they dont care about having an 8 hour work week, or medicare, or social security, or fair pay for a honest days work, or roads to drive on, or bridges to cross, or unemployment insurance when they lose a job. I could go on for hours.
The same old song and dance was done leading up to the Great Depression. It was the Republican party that argued for months with FDR about "socialist" legislation. They argued that our country would become socialist if these programs were enacted. Their stalling of needed relief was what made unemployment raise to 25% during that time. Their policies hindered needed relief then, and they are at it again!!!! They were wrong then, and they are wrong now.
The fact is that conservatives have little to no vision. Change comes slowly to them, if it comes at all. It seems that the deep south GOP senators just dont get it. They tout concepts that explain why putting money into their states will only cause problems. I call it LAZINESS!
Too lazy to handle the projects their states need. To lazy to come up with any real plans. The GOP is in its death throes. As long as idiots like Jim DeMint keep sounding off "socialism" as an excuse for opposing needed reinvestment, the GOP will continue to wither away, like the whig party did.

johnrj08   February 27th, 2009 10:59 am ET

OK. Let's outlaw Social Security. Let's eliminate the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force. Who needs the FBI, CIA or FDIC? Forget FEMA and the SBA. And let's cut out those scientific grants that enable searches for cures to terrible diseases and new technologies that might have improved our continued survival on the planet. Anything that the federal government does is an evil Marxist plot designed to subvert the American way of life and destroy capitalism. Yeah, we'll show those Lenin and Stalin guys. And, in the meantime, we can all start getting used to living in a Third World country. Who votes for these guys?

Ursula   February 27th, 2009 10:58 am ET

The senator makes me want to puke! The republicans won't give Obama a chance to fix Bush's mistakes. They always bring the "S" word into it. I tell you what... I am soooooo sick of republicans that I may have to leave this country and go to one with ZERO republicans!

I only wonder if the sheep who buy the idea that a benovelent big brother is the answer to thier personal problems.

Frankly this budget, bail out and powergrab scares the crap out of me.

Civil wars have started over less.

My only hope is that the American people still belive in personal liberty enough to put a stop to this crap.

Where is the OUTRAGE when in 2001 GW BUSH gave 1.35 trillion dollars in TAX CUT to the RICH & CORPORATE AMERICA   February 27th, 2009 10:58 am ET

To the republiklans, "socialism" is the new word for "terrorism"!

The republiklan party and it's group of bigoted & hateful leaders are so out of touch with the american people and are back with their demagoguery of calling people names, whom they despise and are "Unamerican" to their hillybilly sensibilities!

What's new? – They've alienated blacks, hispanics, arabs, moslems, and now calling our beloved president Barack Obama a socialist!

Is this the party of LincReagan or Rush Limbaugh & Sean Hannity?!

****Reagan will be turning in his grave and closing his ears to the words of the political hatemongers*****

AdamW   February 27th, 2009 10:58 am ET

Funny how they got us into this mess. Ok, here's an idea.

If these politicians represent their people then they shouldn't get a dime of the recovery money and we'll see how long they stay in office.

Anyone who doesn't want the lower taxes can pay more if they don't need the money.

Idiots.

Craig   February 27th, 2009 10:58 am ET

These guys need to stop, the real american people voted and we are tired of the hurray for the rich and to hell with everyone below that level. These are unprecidented times where this contry hasnt been before, yet not a republican 1 can give us any answers for a fix, except give the rich tax breaks. I cant speak for everyone else, but by the way the election went most think the other way.

The republican party is showing their true colors,,,,,the color is racism. The southern politicians are still fighting the civil war. I am a yankee,,,,,born in Michigan. After my retirement my wife and myself moved to the tidewater portion of Virginia. It did not take long for us to realize that the civil war was still being fought. I did not fight in the civil war,,,,,,nor did my father or his father. Southern people for some reason cannot live in the present.,,,,,,,,they live in the past,,,,,,and i mean the past. Black people are here to stay ,,,,,,the same goes for homosexuals. These same people that are so opposed to our new president,,,,,,maybe someday your own son or daughter may bring home a black inlaw. Stop the bickering,,,,,,America deserves better than what you are expousing.

Paul   February 27th, 2009 10:58 am ET

So... Mike, just so you know, we, the people of America, know you're hoping we fail. You're hoping more people lose their jobs, that people take their own lives our of despair. You're hoping this economic mess claims people's lives, so that you can claim Obama's policies did it and you can take back power in 2012. No sacrifice of people other than yourself is too great, right?

gl, Pittsburgh   February 27th, 2009 10:58 am ET

nadine   February 27th, 2009 10:57 am ET

Do any of you remeber what happend with Russia or with China or with Canada - did socialism really work????? UH NO Get a clue and figure out that with socialism, the goverment will pretty much tell us what to do for a living, what schools to go to, can we buy a house. They acutally had a list for those wanting a house, first come first serve, and if you were not next in line, the person could not get a house, is this what we really want - how about standing in line for 10 hours to buy a loaf of bread - is this where the US wants to be heading or do we still want to be able to go to the grocery stores, malls and buy what we need. Do we want to have military troops walking the streets, do we want free speech, pay attention people

slickingdom   February 27th, 2009 10:57 am ET

This country is in the throws of an economic disaster. Capitalism
coupled with deregulation and greed has failed this country. The
stimulus package comes from the George W. Bush era. He gave away
billions of unanswered dollars of taxpayer money to the very ones that
help send the financial system into disaster. I still don't hear the GOP
idea of how to solve this mess they created !! Only criticism of the ones
trying to come up with a solution to stifle a downward spiral.

Audrey   February 27th, 2009 10:57 am ET

CMC, spending money doesnt make the govt socialists. Its spending money with strings attached. Obama's stimulus plan not only spends money we don't have, it subjugates the states to the federal govt. The plan grossly explands the role and authoritative power of the federal govt. Explain to me how a more pervasive govt will result in the further protection of our rights and liberties???

mike33   February 27th, 2009 10:57 am ET

Wow...this rhetoric so reminds me of McCarthyism....but since the conservatives so much want to turn back the clock in the U.S. to the 'good ole days' of the 1950's - when we everyone had such 'equal rights' I guess we shouldn't be surprised.

babs from Denver   February 27th, 2009 10:57 am ET

All I have heard from Republicans is criticism and name calling. I would be more inclined to listen to them IF they offered alternative plans. Right now they seem to be the party of sour grapes.

Randy   February 27th, 2009 10:57 am ET

People with work ethic and education have spoken and the market is down 40% since BO took over. The worst drop in history, including the great depression. I thought he was going to fix everthing? I have yet to see him paying peoples mortgage and bills like so many Bo supporters thought. Instead they are the first people who are laid off. Dont worry you can go make $8hr building a bridge or digging a ditch to fix a road! Global warming and Bo the two greatest rip offs in history, stupid little liberals.

Robin Dawe   February 27th, 2009 10:56 am ET

Whenever some right wing nut-job speaks about his/her rejection of our President's actions to get us out of the mess they created, CNN feels the need to give it air time. Why?

Leave those mushrooms in the dark, while the real men and women correct the mess they made. Ignore them – please.

rightsaid   February 27th, 2009 10:56 am ET

Who got us into this mess?

Republicans have pushed deregulation until several different markets just couldn't take it. Sad fact is that the Fed Govt is the only thing big enough to (maybe) save us from depression. Obama is just trying to wield the federal power necessary to avert disaster. And it won't be his fault if it fails.

The GOP brought us this mess.

Matt   February 27th, 2009 10:56 am ET

Republicans seem to have a lot of fun labeling things and making shaky connections then they do actually formulating sound policy. Truly the party of "no".

Joe   February 27th, 2009 10:56 am ET

You guys are idiots. The economic downturn has been linked to greed and get-rich-quick strategies as well as policies instituted during the Clinton administration. Yeah some of Bush's policies didn't help but they wouldn't have been bad if there was some knowledge of what was about to happen. This is not Bush's fault and blaming Republicans is naive and something that democrats have become very good at. The American people are hearing what they want to hear and not what they need to hear. Obama's policies are not what this country needs right now and to call them socialist might be a little bit of a stretch but it's not far off at all. He needs to get a better grip on this and reach across the aisle like he promised (one of many promises not being kept so far). If he doesn't start doing this and everyone keeps backing him like he's the next coming, then he will drive this country further away from where it wants to be.

J.P.   February 27th, 2009 10:56 am ET

This stimulus is not "free" money. Someone will have to pay for it... in excessive taxation. The government has no money and doesn't do anything to make money. The government cannot give you a dime until it confiscates it from someone else first.

Excessive taxation is precisely the spark that tore the colonies from the British motherland, and ultimately led to the birth of our great republic.

No government can control an economy, without first controlling the people. And the "producers," the ones who bankroll ALL economic activity and prosperity in this country, will not sit by idly and go willingly into economic slavery.

The producers will simply "go 'John Galt'" and will sit on their investment dollars. And when that happens, who will be left to pay for this socialist utopia currently being forced at gunpoint on the American public?

Socialism has only killed 100 million people... let's give it another try, shall we?

ervington   February 27th, 2009 10:56 am ET

Seriously, can we please move beyond silly name calling? This is really front page cnn news? That a senator threw a scary name at a plan? No analysis of the plan, no analysis of the word being thrown around, no analysis of if the two coincide empirically....just, some senator used the word socialist so it's front page news? Can I get a job at CNN?

Billie   February 27th, 2009 10:56 am ET

Our country needs socialism, and the only reason that these repubicans are afraid of it is because once we instill a socialist system, the people will actually be in charge. It means that their days of padding their pockets are over, and that the people will be at the forefront of policy–I am sure that for a GOP leader, that is a terrifying prospect! Ha Ha.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE: YES WE CAN!

Howard   February 27th, 2009 10:56 am ET

What do these conservatives know anyway. Haven't they and the Republican party been in charge for 28 out of the last 40 years??
The republicans have done nothing but expand the government and the deficit during this period. Conservatives can say what they want, but now they look just like hypocrites. What ideas do they have to offer?? Let the financial system fail?? Let foreclosures ruin the housing market and blow the international finance market to shreds?? Who do they think holds all these bad loans?. They are banks all over the world. The problem is a world wide problem, and the US is supposed to be a "shining light" according to them. How can you be the shining light if your whole economy is in the toilet. At least Obama is trying something. I haven't seen the conservative or Republican plan. Maybe a reader can point me to it??? Calling people socialist is just ridiculous. What does that mean anymore?? I could call these conservatives: gap toothed, cousin marrying, closet perverts, but what does that accomplish. Come up with a plan to resolve this problem. Then I will call you smart. Otherwise, go to your basement and shut up!!

Robert   February 27th, 2009 10:56 am ET

Sen. DeMint is suggesting that conservatives "might have to take to the streets?" The American people did not do that even when the leaders of the country broke the laws they swore to uphold. We voted them out. That's the way we do it in this country, Jim.

Huckabee's comments are intended to set himself up for the '12 race. He's not helping himself; he's just creating more unrest. We tried it for 8 years with his party in control, and the world went down the toilet. Obama's been in for 5 weeks. Let him try something different than what the previous guys did.

If his way doesn't work, you'll get your chance in '12.

gl, Pittsburgh   February 27th, 2009 10:56 am ET

brink of socialism which mean to the Republicans helping poor people. The Republicans really hate poor people and feel the government should not help them.

jim   February 27th, 2009 10:55 am ET

Instead of offering SOLUTIONS all they can do is be the new bullies on the block. We are in one of the worst economic time's and republicans are acting like this is high school with all this name calling, here's an idea, offer some solutions, ask your mightly leaders Hannity and Limbaugh.

Stev   February 27th, 2009 10:55 am ET

I wish he would just shut up. After all the rubbish they've put us thought, they still have the nerves to be opposing common sense and intelligent approaches. I have decided to no longer become a registered republican. Republican ideas are like a winery putting old wine into new wineskins and claim it to be the best.

Independent   February 27th, 2009 10:55 am ET

Get this idea from Hannity?????? You people are digging yourself deeper by saying such things....

Your President spent, spent, spent and spent....and when the Dems took control of the Congress, than your President put out the old veto pen...a little late wasn't it....You all were happy when he was giving you what you wanted...now, it is a different tune, you will have to pay more taxes....You make all that money....you look down on the poor, do you help them....NO!!!

As you told the Dems back in 2000, you lost so get over it.....I remember that so clearly...

Big Ed   February 27th, 2009 10:54 am ET

What a DORK! That is an arguement that will be hard to defend! DeMint is just another nobody trying to be somebody. Why don't you and your other knuckleheads go back to D.C. and help the people you are supposed to be representing instead of posing for the national media.

If I were a South Carolinian, I would be telling my "Senator" to shut his face and get to work!

Canadian   February 27th, 2009 10:54 am ET

I love how the GOP promoted "Country First" during the election but has proven otherwise since. The sore losers have done everything but put the country first with the new administration. GET OVER IT, YOU LOST!!! How about supporting the president in his ideas and plans for this country. Much how the rest of the world endured W for the last 8 years. If the plan fails, you get the last laugh but why not give the stimulus package the support it needs.

You know why the GOP doesn't like the stimulus package? Because they know it has a good chance to work. And if it works, they've lost the White House not for just the next 8 years but possibly the next 16 years. People who think that the GOP is resisiting this package for the good of the country are blinded by the bigger goals the GOP has. Do your research before you criticize Obama. Give him some time. We are all responsible!

illinoistom   February 27th, 2009 10:54 am ET

And to all you Obama supporters that said "he really doesn't believe all that socialism stuff. He will actually govern from the center," do you still think he intends to govern from the center?

Margie   February 27th, 2009 10:54 am ET

Bush must of been the world's best fish oil salesman because he sold his socialism for the rich hook, line, and sinker to everyone of these same clowns that are now gripping about Obama.

J.   February 27th, 2009 10:54 am ET

Yet another GOP obstructionist. Obama should stop with trying to be bipartisan because the GOP will never let him. America knew what they were getting with Obama and we voted for him anyway. The voters spoke and they liked his agenda...Oh and the GOP has absolutely no credibility when it comes to spending. Tax and spend is much better than borrow and spend.

Stop Obama!!   February 27th, 2009 10:54 am ET

Someone needs to stop the slide toward socialism that Obama has started. We voted for change, but not to change the foundations of our country. I applaud Sen. DeMint!

OBAMA TAX TYRANNY
//////////Here It Comes/////////
Under Obama’s new Government Taxation Plan
on our SMALL BUSINESS we will pay:
INCOME (Rich Tax): $250,000; $10-20,000+ a year
SOCIAL SECURITY (Increase): $50,000+ a year
ELECTRIC: (New Tax on Energy): $6,000+ a year
HEALTH CARE (Government Plan): $100,000+ a year
TAX DEDUCTIONS (Loss): $7,000+ a year
We will be forced to lay off 10-12% of our work force
and raise prices to the consumer by 20-22%……so everyone
pays in one way or another. The definition of rich being
$250,000 income…….this is income used to purchase
equipment, inventory and other items that we are already
Taxed on.

More knee-jerk overblown name-calling from the party that gave us an unjust, unwinnable war, an economic fiasco, torture as a policy, secret rendition, concentration camps, the stacking of government agencies with cronies, electronic eavesdropping, and so much more.

Craig- Easton, PA   February 27th, 2009 10:52 am ET

I saw the headline and I thought either DeMin or Inhofe. Gotta wonder what alternate universe these guys live in. They'd watch the whole country go down the tubes gladly while genuflecting to the great god Market. That's the same Market that gave us such stellar free enterprise advocates as Bernie Madoff and Enron. No wonder the public now has more faith in government than business.

mac   February 27th, 2009 10:52 am ET

So??? We've had socialism for the rich for years! It's called "trickle-down" economics. Maybe, just maybe, one day the Republicans might have some new ideas, but I'm not holding my breath.

Leo D, PA   February 27th, 2009 10:52 am ET

Like General George Patton emphasized, trust is a false hope when
dealing with socialists, and the Army will keep America strong. It is
time to act now, like President Obama mentioned; however, he was
speaking on behalf of big government and the Stimulus Plan, which,
now has shown a reverse trend, with every taxpayer holding about a $35,000 debt to be paid off? When, and if the Stimulus Recovery Plan
starts showing an economic turnaround, we should all expect a return
on our investments; since monies have been flowing to banks, etc....

Whammybar   February 27th, 2009 10:52 am ET

Jim Demint, you republican. Hey, try fixing our problems instead of calling people names. This seems to be the mantra of the conservative group. Get your face in the media and call somebody a name becuase they don't think the same way we all do. By the way, what's your great solution to the mess the were in? For the good of the country stop being a politician until this crisis is over and then you can go back to playing political games and call people names all you want. You were elected to serve the people, all the people! Your partisan behavior in a time of national crisis is pathetic.

Tina in Phoenix   February 27th, 2009 10:52 am ET

I get so tired of hearing this bull over and over again. REALITY CHECK!!!! We've never been a purely capitalist, free market society. Never, ever, ever! Plus I always love people who have their lives made in the shade who complain about tax payer money being spent to help others who are less fortunate. Huckabee and DeMint will never want for anything for the rest of their lives because of their jobs. If more socialism will get us out of this mess that unregulated, 'free' markets have brought us to, then I say, fine with me.

Maureen McMurdo-Chapman, New Britain, PA   February 27th, 2009 10:52 am ET

CPAC and it's fawning "please pick me" crowd are a bunch a whiners! Socialism indeeed! When was the last time one of these so-called conservatives lost their home to foreclosure or had to decide whether they could put food on the table for their children or pay the mortgage or rent? Most rich people in this country don't have a clue and don't care about the rest of the country that is suffering.

They whine because they want to distract the rest of us from the absolute financial debacle they've caused in this country. What a joke they are.

M.R.   February 27th, 2009 10:52 am ET

And did Huckabee say that of the previous administration also? Because the government bailout of the banks started with Bush...

The Republican party had 8 years to figure out how to keep the catastrophe we are all now living from occurring; where were all their bright ideas then?

If the Republican party wants to rebuild, then I say to stop the mudslinging...and actually formulate a contrasting plan with real specifics. Back up the talk with action, and then maybe more people will pay attention.

Craig   February 27th, 2009 10:51 am ET

I'm wondering where republicans are buying their credibility, because they used what little they had left at the end of Bush's second term. I mean they did such a fantastic job with the whole 'fiscal conservatism' thing that they wasted a budget surplus and left us with record deficits. Then they have the nerve to tell us that we should just 'pull up our bootstraps' to get us out of this mess. Personally, I'm really not interested in any republican politician's opinion on or help with anything having to do with the economy. They have done way too much already.

Keith   February 27th, 2009 10:51 am ET

I find it ironic that Sen. Demint who marched lock step with President Bush and his cronnies while they drove our country into a depression , is now doing everything possible to prevent a recovery that would benefit the majority of Americans. Sad, sad, sad.

Artie   February 27th, 2009 10:51 am ET

Maybe someone should as these senators what they think of 100,000 people losing health insurance every day. It's blatantly obvious that we need some nationalized guarantee of health care, otherwise the overall cost to our society will be enormous.

michael   February 27th, 2009 10:51 am ET

Obama doesn't have to 'sell' socialism - the zero oversight theology of Jim DeMint, GW Bush & Co has already forced it on us.

Derrick   February 27th, 2009 10:51 am ET

What DeMint says is essentially true. To be more accurate, Obama's policies are those of social democracy, which is slightly different from pure socialism.

However, after 8 years of corporate socialism, the Republicans have lost all credibility with me when it comes to fighting this. Where the hell was their outrage when Bush was doing the same thing?

Bernard   February 27th, 2009 10:51 am ET

1st, who heard of this guy outside of SC before now? And 2nd, why are GOP representatives trying to launch a violent insurrection against the President? During the election I had to stomach Gov. Palin accusing the President of "palling w/ terrorists" while people were hissing racial slurs & calls to lynch the then-democratic candidate; now I have to read about Sen. DeMint calling people to "take to the streets"? When will the Neo-Cons understand?

I know these guys don't get elected if the people aren't motivated into a crisis-mode every two years. But. Every economist on the planet is saying our nation hasn't been in this much trouble in decades. A new approach is needed, no? Why not roll up your sleeves and help your neighbor instead of stubbornly sticking to 30 year old ideologies that probably got us stuck here in the first place?

I mean, not like the GOP won't win another election. They can just do what they did in 2000: snatch the country's economic growth, squander it, then blame their poor decisions on the outgoing Democratic president, CC Fox news to spread the Word & they're good, right?

Niki, New Jersey   February 27th, 2009 10:51 am ET

Mr. Huckabee and Mr. DeMint, America can no longer afford Capitalism since the last 8 years of it brought this country to its knees. You call it Socialism, the rest of us will call it cleaing up after George Bush.

Concerned in MA   February 27th, 2009 10:51 am ET

I'll use Obama's own words to describe his policies:

"You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig."

Jose   February 27th, 2009 10:51 am ET

And these men are absolutely right. For some reason, everyone is so caught up in the Obama personality cult that they will not even stop for one moment and ask how much money two trillion dollars is.

And where is it coming from? FYI, we're not writing a check off of money we have in the bank. We are BORROWING it. How long do you think we can continue to borrow this way before our nation goes belly up financially, the same as happened to systems that were run this way in the past (USSR, Argentina, N. Korea, Brazil)? Socialism doesn't work, and people need only look up the definition of socialism to find that that is exactly what Obama and the Democrats are doing. Or do we think it can't happen to us, since "we're America?" Think again.

Not that CNN will post a comment agreeing with these conservatives....

Obambi   February 27th, 2009 10:51 am ET

Pelosi and Reid are the brains behind the New Socialism–it is very obvious that Obama is just the messenger....scary.......

David, ID   February 27th, 2009 10:50 am ET

And Sen. DeMint is the world's best example of an idiot.
He has no idea what Marxism or Socialism is... Maybe if he tried cracking a book now and again instead of just trying to hurt a political opponent.... I could claim he is a follower of McCarthy, but I don't know the Sen. even knows who that is.

Dexter in Houston TX   February 27th, 2009 10:50 am ET

Sen. Jim DeMint, Jindal and Huckabee, please tell Americans your great plan, we're waiting to hear the "Republican solution" to the economic crisis...please tell us.

How's the air up there Republicans, I'd like to know because down here in the real world we need people with real world solutions not politics as usual...

Allow me to make a suggestion to you gentlemen...SHUT UP!

Republicans = window lickers   February 27th, 2009 10:50 am ET

And the Retardlicans are the best salesmen of economic depressions. "Follow our economic policies and we can promise you economic prosperity..........if you are a millionaire already"

Pro-Socialist   February 27th, 2009 10:50 am ET

American style capitalism caused this mess Senator Demint. You want to meet in the streets, I'm more than willing to fight you and your thugs for control of this country you've ruined.

Pete   February 27th, 2009 10:50 am ET

So, a sitting US Senator is telling people to "take to the streets"? A sitting US Senator is giving a wink and a nod encouragement for people to take up violence? Hey, Senator, does the name Timothy McVeigh mean anything to you? Just in case some chucklehead decides to be McVeigh the Second, we WILL remember you said these words.

Jon   February 27th, 2009 10:50 am ET

Go ahead and take to the streets and while you're at it, grab a shovel and do some real work instead of chirping about the evils of socialism.

Obama Victim   February 27th, 2009 10:50 am ET

good morning comrades............perhaps we should call him
"Premiere Obama"

shelly   February 27th, 2009 10:50 am ET

Demint should have a recall. It would be like calling him the senates leading spokesman for fascisim. The president is no socialist and if the past 8 years of no leadership that the Republicans ,you might even think he is a little right of center. But with the crap that you did to this great nation drastic steps need to be taken

donna   February 27th, 2009 10:49 am ET

Yawn....

David   February 27th, 2009 10:49 am ET

I'm getting tired of my Republican "leaders" to get in the way of this country getting out of this deep recession. Accept that your ideas failed for 8 years and if you believe the President is bringing socialism to this country than shut up and let history judge him. If you are right, he will be impeached or not reelected along with many Democrats with a majority of this country supporting you.

RS   February 27th, 2009 10:49 am ET

When they have a better way to get us out of the economic crisis we currently find ourselves in, let me know.

Rick from Murfreesboro, TN   February 27th, 2009 10:49 am ET

I am sick and tired of the Republicans trying to paint Mr. Obama as a socialist. It is their fault that we are in the mess we are in. The Republicans were in charge of Congress for twelve out of the last fourteen years. They controlled the White House for the last eight years. This deficit is Bush's not Mr. Obama's. It is time for the Republicans to either help to get us out of this mess or for them to stand out of the way. The American people spoke in the elections, we want something different from the tired old rhetoric of the Republican's. They need to remember that this nation was founded by liberals and moderates who were tired of a conservative British government. During the American Revolution the conservatives were known as Tories and they fought for the British. Every real advance we have made in this country has come about after we have pushed aside the nay saying conservatives and have gotten along with the business of running this country. Right now we are reaping the results of Ronald Reagan's idiotic economic policies and his removal of governmental controls. Conservativism has failed in this country just as it has failed in the past and it will continued to fail in the future. Working people are constantly getting screwed by the rich conservatives who only want to make money for them selves and their toadies. We have had enough of this old way of thinking.

Marydoe   February 27th, 2009 10:49 am ET

Does anyone really believe these guys will "take to the streets?" Oh, c'mon. It's amazing how a word's meaning can be stretched and expanded so many different ways. Socialism is already in play in this country when you consider who is in charge of the infrastructure. It's not in private hands and I would question the idea of putting our infrastructure in private hands. Do we want the Saudis or the Chinese to own our roads, bridges, etc.? I think not.

debbie   February 27th, 2009 10:49 am ET

Ahh Republican fear-mongering. It's what they do.

bendo   February 27th, 2009 10:48 am ET

the gop, the gift that keeps on giving!

John Sullivan   February 27th, 2009 10:48 am ET

What does "take to the streets" mean? Is the Senator advocating rebellion? It's been awhile since South Carolina stirred up trouble. Another man fron Illonois may have to take care of that state this time also.

Robert   February 27th, 2009 10:48 am ET

I'll take socialism over the fascism the GOP were offering.

Laverne   February 27th, 2009 10:48 am ET

Insults, insults, insults from the right, but yet again NO real ideas or solutions from the them, except cut taxes and cut more taxes. I think Bush cut taxes while engaging America in 2 wars and all it did was put us where we are right now! To DeMint and the others in the party of no, instead of being a problem finder, how about becoming problem solvers or is that asking to much?

TonySD   February 27th, 2009 10:48 am ET

I will take socialism over dictatorship (Bush Administration) any day! Come on guys...Socialism? You can do better. Fact: The Democrats are in control now and you cannot fathom the thought and will do ANYTHING to twart President Obama's leadership! Why werent you screaming about deficits when your president took us to an unauthorized war under false pretenses and racked up the worst deficits in American History? Why? Because your partisan; I mean look at your party.... continue this rhetoric and you all will find yourselves without a party! Score: America 1 REPUBLICAN BIGOTS 0

Lee   February 27th, 2009 10:48 am ET

The best socialism salesmen have been these republicans who rolled backed New Deal regulations and allowed unbridled greed and capitalism to FAIL in the most spectacular way under their leadership the past 8 years.

Now the republican party is the "know nothing" party, the hate party, the party of treason, secession and the old confederacy, the anti-science party, and the party against modernism and progress.

It has become the party of ignorance and hate led by their corpulent drug addicted leader, Rush Limpbaugh. Even educated conservatives, like David Brooks, Frum and Peter Buckley have decried the "dumbing down" of republican thought and ideology.

Keith   February 27th, 2009 10:47 am ET

Me thinks South Carolina is still not a beacon of political thought. It's probably also sure money that their good Senator will continue to be inconsolable over the election of a biracial President.

Eddie B.   February 27th, 2009 10:47 am ET

These Republican Conservatives are unreal. They really reaped the benefits while corporate america ripped off the American people under Bush. Their lack of regulation produced nothing, but ethics infringements and pushing this country to the brink of a depression with greed. When the US was bailing out their buddies on Wall Street, it was fine, but when the government helps the people that are suffering as a result, it is socialism. They sicken me and are desperate!

beckyinOhio   February 27th, 2009 10:47 am ET

Socialism. That's all the Republicans can do now is to continue to use scare tactics against the people of our country. Too bad so many are so ignorant that they believe them.

Socialism also includes, Schools, Police Dept., Fire Dept, roads, sewers, Social Security, Medicare, (and the list goes on), would these guys like to take ALL of these social services away from us?

It is the Republican party that needs to wake up. We, the people, are sick of your scare tactics.

Kevin -- Indiana   February 27th, 2009 10:47 am ET

Ronald Reagan and is cult-like following have just been insulting the electorate for 40 years, and people keep voting for these jokers.

If you think government is the problem, guess what ... in a democracy WE are the government.

The government is NOT the problem. Ultimately all responsibility falls to the electorate.

Insult the government all you like, ultimately it's just self-hatred.

beevee   February 27th, 2009 10:47 am ET

This idiot senator seems to be stuck in his conservative hole without any idea of how dire is our economic crisis. Talk to any unbiased economist who will tell you that Obama's strategy is not to turn this country to a socialist one but to turn things around to establish prosperity once again.

Tomas E   February 27th, 2009 10:47 am ET

Ron Stevens   February 27th, 2009 10:47 am ET

Where were all you congressmen and womenwhen Obama was campaining? Where were the news and financial network anchors with the interviews during the campain?

christi in canada   February 27th, 2009 10:46 am ET

Up here in "socialist" Canada (a thriving democracy based on capitalism and free markets, with prudent regulations) – we have health care for all our citizens, nobody is preyed upon by unscrupulous banks, and up until last month we were running a surplus.

And let me tell you, Obama is much farther to the right of centre with his ideas than Canadians are. He would be a conservative up here.

So the "socialist" label is smoke and mirrors guys.

warrcorick   February 27th, 2009 10:46 am ET

Rich people have always considered helping people instead of
taking advantage of their weaknesses socializism. President Obama
is so popular today because the majority of U.S. citizens today are homeless due to ungoverned capitalizing. It's your turn to take it.

It's scary to see that people so high up in government can have absolutely no idea of the fundamentals of policies like socialism and communism, can see no difference between the two, and can stoop to using the names of Stalin and Lenin so loosely to instill fear in their constituents, rather than offering effective alternative choices to Obama's policies.

Bob   February 27th, 2009 10:46 am ET

Finally someone actually acknowledges it. But, of course, most liberals will get angry, say it isn't socialism, and go back to living in la-la-land.

If you're a socialist, why not accept it?

Donna Annacone   February 27th, 2009 10:46 am ET

Right......
Lets keep it the anarchy it has been for 8 years. That gotten us far......

Corey Cantor   February 27th, 2009 10:46 am ET

The Republicans are absolutely ridiculous... and I would say the same to any Republican that called Bush a dictator or worse. Their ideology, with a small Clinton break, got us here and its 93' all over again.

The budget looks good; the Repubs need to get real.

L. Bateman   February 27th, 2009 10:46 am ET

Wake up America!......here in Canada we are a free democratic country with Health care..it isn't perfect, but we don't have to worry about paying medical bills ever!!...I would think that anyone with half a brain would want this for your children & grandchildren as well as for yourself...each province in the country has it's own healthcare , taken from taxes...It's not socialistic, it's progressive

Dave in Albuquerque   February 27th, 2009 10:46 am ET

Want to understand the complete bankruptcy of the Republican Party? Instead of offering ideas, all they can manage is calling people names.

Nick   February 27th, 2009 10:45 am ET

It is socialism if the goverment works for the common man..

Anything new here after Palin and Mccain used this term?

dinah   February 27th, 2009 10:45 am ET

That's a ridiculour statement, more rant than sense. If we did do the unlikely and turn to socialism it would be Republican arrogance and distain for the common man that would more likely be the cause.

Ryan   February 27th, 2009 10:45 am ET

what choice do we have? letting everyone lose their jobs and make the recession even worse? i mean, what do these republicans plan on accomplishing by giving these criticisms without presenting a better option? at least the democrats are attempting to fix the problem!

PAUL   February 27th, 2009 10:45 am ET

SOUNDS LIKE SEN. DEMENTED WAS ASLEEP WHEN CAPITALISM WAS RUNNING AMOCK. NOW HE IS BLAMING SOMEONE ELSE WHO IS TRYING TO GET THE SITUATION UNDER CONTROL. WHEN THE ECONOMY TURNS AROUND CAPITALISM WILL PREVAIL AND MAYBE SEN. DEMENTED WILL BE OUT OF OFFICE.

Ridiculous. The uneducated lap this stuff up. Consider social security, people. Socialist? Of course it is. Is DeMint opposed to social security? I doubt it.
This guy is just another Republican naysayer trying to protect his rich buddies from economic justice.

george cook   February 27th, 2009 10:45 am ET

He is trying out for the "KING OF SOCIALISM"...let's be honest about this.
Another Dandy...a $318 Billion Tax Hit on the American Citizens. Maybe he has a "Money Machine" we dont all have access to! Again, what can I tell you...."The Tax and Spenders" are AGAIN in power in the Big House.
Just take a bottle of Aspirin, the whole bottle and relax.

Kentucky Democrat for Obama   February 27th, 2009 10:45 am ET

Hmmm....Bush wants to throw money down the drain with tax cuts for the rich, an unjust war and a horrible bailout to bad banks and the Republicans hand it to him on a silver platter while Obama wants to spend money THE RIGHT WAY to get us out of the hole that Bush put us in and all of a sudden, we're sliding into that horrible abyss known as "socialism."

GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!!!!!! The Republicans are doing the only thing they know how to do: play on people's fears. If they had been the "fiscial conservitaves" that they claim to be, we wouldn't be in this mess.

CitizenKane   February 27th, 2009 10:45 am ET

Same thing was said about FDR, JFK, and others. Yet the out of control spending and mismanagement of the recent republican administrations seems to be fine with these people. It is truly unfortunate when we elect people of such profound ignorance as Sen. DeMint.

Lynn   February 27th, 2009 10:45 am ET

As usual fear and slander from the Republicans just like they used to get America into the war in Iraq . What about an actual plan of their own?? All politics and eyes on the next election and no country first!!

What they propose is an aristocracy of the rich while everyone else works for rock bottom wages with no benefits.

LMC in Seattle   February 27th, 2009 10:45 am ET

Socialism is the new Republican cry! Pretty soon they will be seeing socialists and communists on every corner as in the reign of terror of the McCarthy era. It's hilarious to see all of this rebellion against government spending that we didn't see when Bush was spending the money! I guess it just depends on who is spending the money. I think these legislators and ultra-conservatives would be singing another tune if their jobs were cut and they didn't know how they were going to pay their mortgage or feed their family!

Jim   February 27th, 2009 10:44 am ET

Let's say for the sake of discussion President Obama is selling socialism - what do Republicans, Conservatives, and Libertarians have to offer instead? More Cheney and Bush? Rush Limbaugh? That kind of self-interested and buffoonery leadership? I don't think so. There must be a third way.

They take hand outs from federal government like Katrina and tax revenues then turn around act big. The God loving people seem to ignore people's suffering. Is it 2013 yet?   February 27th, 2009 10:42 am ET

See sheep, we don't want to bail out the banks either, there used to be something called self accountability in this country, but is gone.

Small and medium banks are thriving, it is the big bullies that had their houses picketed by ACORN and were forced by Barney and Chrissy to give loans to people that had "no money" and the banks are now being bailed out and Barney and Chrissy keep their jobs.

Obambi preaches it, but he doesn't mean it, big "gubment" will take care of everything if you fail it's the new American way.

I live by the credo that we are all guaranteed Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness, but RESULTS MAY VARY.

One and done Barry.

Debra Austin, Texas   February 27th, 2009 10:42 am ET

These people are living in another world at another period in time. The days of rugged individualism as perceived by these monoliths are long gone. Even an actor who played a cowboy on TV isn't going to bring that reality back. Now's the time for creativity. Instead of thinking all or nothing as these dinosaurs are doing, think more of public/private partnerships so that the private arena doesn't get lost. Instead we're just hearing more 'no', more unrealistic junk about cutting taxes that don't make sense in this world. You want car companies to compete with foreign companies where insurance costs are paid nationally, then you have to think of how to be competitive, that means affording workers the opportunity to get health care without employers subsidizing the cost. Either come up with solutions are STFU.

Tennessee Libertarian   February 27th, 2009 10:42 am ET

RN in Ann Arbor   February 27th, 2009 10:42 am ET

I never heard Democrats suggest that anyone take to the streets except to protest the actions of the Bush administration. Now DeMint says we need to "take to the streets to stop America's slide into socialism". This sounds like force. This sounds like treason. Every day I want to keep getting further away from the Republican party. Is this now the party of spoiled brats who aren't in power now- so they want to end the game and don't even play nice if they are in control?
These people really do need to fade away so this country can move forward. I may not like everything being done now but for the past 8 years capitalism wasn't working out so well.

Justin from New Haven, CT   February 27th, 2009 10:42 am ET

Pragmatist   February 27th, 2009 10:42 am ET

I've tired of these McCarthy era diatribes from Mr. DeMint.

He sounds just like those idiots on that HBO special "The Right Feeling Wronged". There were a bunch of loud mouthed hillbillies on that show calling the President a "Marxist" and a "Socialist" and NONE of them could accurate define those doctrines.

Our President is an American, through and through, dealing with the mess that an incompetent Republican Administration, with the aide of folks like DeMint, has left. It is the actions that he must take in the face of their steaming pile of ____ that the right wing zealots call socialism. Yet they have no answers to their screw ups!

Gary   February 27th, 2009 10:41 am ET

That's funny. I didn't hear the same comments when a Republican president and 40% of Republicans in Congress and more than that in the Senate voted for government bailouts of the banks (see TARP). If Obama is selling Socialism, were Bush and the Republicans selling Fascism or Authoritarianism (ya know, like Mussolini's Italy or Hitler's Germany)?

Byron   February 27th, 2009 10:41 am ET

DeMint is just an other redneck in the Senate from SC... If Obama is a Socialism salesman... then Bush was a War salesman... and he bough Bush's product, including DeMint.

Kevin in Ohio   February 27th, 2009 10:41 am ET

We are no longer on the brink of socialism.... we are there, and on our way to Obama style communism.

Marla   February 27th, 2009 10:41 am ET

What else would you expect from DeMint? Just more fear-mongering from the sore-loser Party of "No."

Leah from FL   February 27th, 2009 10:41 am ET

Whipping the repub zombie into yet another frenzy. With this type of talk we might be witnessing our own brand of 'terrorist' being born here in the US. AND by the exact same group that states they are anti terrorist. They are terrorizing us with these false 'sound the alarms' statements.
And what should we call the socialized health care that all of the Senators and Representatives are privy to – 'exclusive healthcare'? Do we hear them griping about their very own type of socialized healthcare only they can get – - nothing on that coming from them. Hey let's start there – yeah – do away with their socialized healthplan first. OK.

Hispanic in Dallas, TX   February 27th, 2009 10:41 am ET

I couldn't agree more!

I do not work to support the individuals in this country who are just waiting for handouts!

Socialism has not place in America! This great country needs free markets and competition in order to grow and compete in the global market otherwise we will get left behind.

No thank you, Mr. President, keep your socialist agenda out of my pocketbook!

Scott   February 27th, 2009 10:41 am ET

When did the Republicans stop even pretending to be honest and caring about the best interests of the nation?

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   February 27th, 2009 10:40 am ET

Well, I have to say that the senator is wrong for the reason that the market rarely corrects itself. This is a time that it really needs a correction. The market seems that it is never willing to do the better thing or have forward thinking.

If Obama was really aiming us toward socialism, then the nationalization of the banks wouldn't be denied as much as it is. Let's hear your ideas for keeping the finacial system from totally crapping up. Is that silence I hear? Yes it is because you don't have any other ways to fix the problem.

TracyM.   February 27th, 2009 10:40 am ET

If capitalism is to work, the private sector must take responsibility for its actions. They must care for their employees and their bottom line, and make sure their needs are met before splurging on private jets or huge bonuses. If capitalism is to work, it must have a conscience. The banks and auto industry came to the government looking for help. If the government is going to be ASKED to interfere in the private sector, then the government gets to call the shots. If we'd let them fail, our unemployment numbers would double or triple. It's an unwinnable situation, but I do believe Obama will be happy to hand over the reins once these industries get their feet back under them. I don't think it's socialism; it would only be socialism if Obama had announced he was taking control of the private sector. That's not how it happened. Again, Republicans are very good whiners - but solutions seem to be beyond their ken.

T Jones   February 27th, 2009 10:40 am ET

CNN WHY DO YOU KEEP POSTING WHAT THESE MONSTERS ARE SAYING

Republicans got us into this and now we are supposed to care what they think? THEY RUINED THE COUNTRY!

P   February 27th, 2009 10:40 am ET

I'd say republicans get a dictionary and look up the definition of socialism ha

Jay   February 27th, 2009 10:40 am ET

Nothing wrong with a little socialism. Look at Sweden... it's one of the highest ranked places in the world to live.

hateYT   February 27th, 2009 10:40 am ET

It's really more of a communist take over.

Uriel   February 27th, 2009 10:40 am ET

These comedians have some nerve trying to scare people about socialism and expanding government. Where were these republican "conservatives" several years ago when governent size and spending hit infamous levels under a republican president and complete republican control of congress? This is exactly why the republicans and the neo-conservatives that have controlled their party lost credibility over years, and hypocritical comments like those in this article will only ensure they lose what little credibility they have left.

Dana from NY   February 27th, 2009 10:39 am ET

Well its better than the Communism of the last 8 years with GWB...so we can pick this all apart until the cows come home- at the end of the day its REPUBLICAN policies that got us into this 1 Trillion dollar debt by tax cuts and war... Obama's spending reinvests into the country creating jobs and actually putting money to use... so I think call it what you want, but it will work a hell of a lot better than the Republican song and dance of the last 8 years. They have no problem spending trillions on a unecessary war, and on tax cuts for the rich- but ask them to spend money on America and the American people and they call it socialism...go figure!

GOP = Geriatric Obstructionist Pityparty   February 27th, 2009 10:39 am ET

Is it not treasonous to propose a violent revolt?

I would be very careful DeMented, seems you are on very shaky ground!

R Cross   February 27th, 2009 10:39 am ET

These CPAC people are some scary and dangerous people. I dont know why I bother to write. CNN alway moderates me:(

america first   February 27th, 2009 10:39 am ET

President Obama is keeping OUR money here in the U.S, he's taking care of America, unlike the last administration did, you spent our money in other countries, you spent it on wars that were not justified, we have a President now that cares about America, and we the people support him.

Becky, Midwest   February 27th, 2009 10:39 am ET

Well, Duh! That's all Obama is: a salesman. People bought his dribble hook, line and sinker! LOL. Be prepared for four years of nothing more but 'inspired' speeches! It will be a four year long campaign.

Peter Horan   February 27th, 2009 10:39 am ET

I didn't realize that anyone beyond political neophytes with no real understanding of the issues was calling President Obama a "Socialist" ... I seriously hope the voters of South Carolina take note and make sure not to re-elect such a joker next term.

Diane Dagenais Turbide   February 27th, 2009 10:39 am ET

People are hurting so much by now thanks to decade of irresponsiblity that they are deaf by now and do not hear anymore the same old verbal excuse for not taking responsibilities towards your own people by continuing on scaring people about the same excuse using the word socialism....life is not about socialism and capitalism...life prosper when focused on living in the middle! Keep on living in the past and reminding us that you are in the past...the rest of us will move forward!

stag   February 27th, 2009 10:38 am ET

We need to speed up this conversion process. How about we replace BHO with Putin as Pres and Chavez as VP. Life will be so much better we should hurry to get there.

Stalin, where are you when we need you?

Dave from Canada   February 27th, 2009 10:38 am ET

So let the country go bankrupt. Is that the Republican answer?

eunice c   February 27th, 2009 10:38 am ET

STOP STOP I donot see Any of You people coming up with a plan to fix this mess we are in - huckabee not doing anything, the Rep not doing anything to come up with a good plan SO EVERYBODY THAT IS SO SMART WHY DON'T YOU COME UP WITH A GREAT PLAN IF YOU DON'T HAVE A SMART PLAN MR. SMART COMPLAINERS SHUT UP AND AS FAR AS OUR KIDS OR TREIR KIDS THEY WILL JUST HAVE TO WORK TO LIVE JUST LIKE ME AND EVERYONE ELSE IN THIS COUNTRY DO

Thebe   February 27th, 2009 10:38 am ET

And DeMint, Huckabee, and the hip-hop wannabes Steele and Jindal are the world's best nihilists!

Virginia   February 27th, 2009 10:37 am ET

Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary Tenth Edition defines socialism like this:

"Socialism – 1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2a: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property; b: a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
3: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done."

Now will someone tell me how this does NOT describe the direction our country is now headed. We knew it would happen, and it is....don't blame me, I voted for the other guy!

Alicia   February 27th, 2009 10:37 am ET

This is news? Another Good Ole Boy, racist Kentucky Fried cracker making a negative comment. Where was this guy eight years ago or even the past two? Oh yeah he was sending bills through of pork spending for his state that Dubya signed off on. I honestly feel that Bush has to feel betrayed by his own party that used him for their greed.

I guess like Senator Shelby this guy will question President Obama's citizenship.

Republicans give it up! Even with that token 'Steele da man' bull, people feel you messed up. Your party ruined this country.

Smart People   February 27th, 2009 10:37 am ET

There’s a good idea…Let’s encourage a riot over this so called “socialist” agenda. Luckily, the only people who will “take it to the streets” are corporate fatcats who can’t fathom not getting paid obscene amounts of money for failure. The republicans truly don’t get it. They offer no solutions, but can’t wait to criticize someone who is.

Now let’s get back to the right wing comments that misconstrue the meaning of socialism to fit their weak arguments…

Brad   February 27th, 2009 10:36 am ET

Oh please....

Because capitalism is a resounding success...

mimi   February 27th, 2009 10:36 am ET

President Obama makes me feel "soft and fuzzy" and these guys give me the "cold pricklies".......and I'm not 2 years old !!!!!

Chris, Albany NY   February 27th, 2009 10:35 am ET

It scares me to think what would have happened if McCain had been elected rather than Obama. Holy crap, these peeps are just willing to sit there and sign all the bills to double our national debt, but arn't willing to try to pull the country up and outa this mess. We want lower taxes, we want lower taxes that's all I hear outa them, well guess what lower taxes havn't worked!!! Use some flippin common sense people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ken   February 27th, 2009 10:35 am ET

Really? UASR? Lenin and Stalin? So, our phones are tapped? We can't speak out without risking being called unpatriotic at best or getting thrown in a secret prison, books we checked out from the library could be scrutinized by the government, we have unprecedented levels of military spending on wars we were lied to about a la 1984.... Oh, wait, it WAS awful Sovietesque.
Now, we're spending money on health insurance instead of bombs, building schools, repairing dilapidated roads and bridges, trying to salvage our economy from 8 years of gross mismanagement and deregulation and THIS is what you decide to complain about? Really?
The right wing needs to get a grip and realize that they had their chance and they screwed it up. So, either get on board and be part of the solution or get out of the way. The people have spoken. Give it a chance to work before you tear it down.

Rednecks and rat feces   February 27th, 2009 10:33 am ET

Republicans only hope it were true, its their new mantra and all they have left to stir up hate and try to salvage whats left of their Facist party.

Fan of Common Sense   February 27th, 2009 10:33 am ET

AMEN!!

Had It   February 27th, 2009 10:32 am ET

From South Carolina? Heck, they can't even spell socialism in that poor, uneducated, backward state !

Stay Active   February 27th, 2009 10:32 am ET

I wish people would stop all the name calling. This is not second grade! I am not young but a proud member of AARP. I loved the Presidents plans for my childrens future. WE need these investments to start my childrens futures.

If you can't think of a better idea....don't say anthing. You can't just stand up there and call someone a Socialist. This will get us no where.

Ira   February 27th, 2009 10:31 am ET

These idiots really need to learn what the definition of socialism is: a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.

Republicans are calling for bank nationalization (which is actually a good idea), that is closer to socialism than universal health care or a carbon market, those things are tenets of liberalism. Socialism calls for near or complete equality, liberalism just calls for everyone to have a minimum amount.

pat C.   February 27th, 2009 10:28 am ET

AND THEIR PLAN FOR AMERICA TO SURVIVE IS???????
didn't think so!

Sen. Jim DeMint best seller of failure   February 27th, 2009 10:27 am ET

Sen. Jim DeMint, well well you are certainly a huge reason for the down fall of our economy

why don't you shut up and help fix what you made

this 'socialism' is an attempt to fix your large failure

don't run next time, you obviously don't know what you are doing

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   February 27th, 2009 10:27 am ET

What else would you expect a republican south carolinian politician to say. The all sound stupid. They can criticize all they want, but where are their new ideas. I know I wouldn't be confident we'll get out of this crisis if McCain and Palin were in office. The republican deregulators have almost bankrupted this country.

Lawton Apartments   February 27th, 2009 10:26 am ET

There's no problem with spending money to help Americans through better government. And I disagree with fellow conservatives that Barack Obama is a socialist, because spending so much money is more a free-market idea than a socialist one. The best I can come up with is to characterize Barack Obama as a hybrid of capitalism and socialism, and I haven't seen that before in modern government. The senators who are criticizing Barack Obama with these blanket statements about socialism and even communism don't appreciate the true meaning of their words. America has never been a socialist country and never will be.

Obama 2.0   February 27th, 2009 10:26 am ET

And Jim Demint still thinks that the honor system is what is best for wall street and trickle down economics! I will go with the salesman, I rather like social gatherings, HA!

Q   February 27th, 2009 10:25 am ET

The man has great speaking skills alright. If only people would actually do their own research and understand what is happening instead of listening to mainstream media...

Neel   February 27th, 2009 10:25 am ET

i would love to hear a repub idea. for once. give us an alternative. that's right, you don't have one.
