Senator calls Obama 'world’s best salesman of socialism'

For the second time in as many days, a prominent Republican has likened Pres. Obama's policies to socialism.
For the second time in as many days, a prominent Republican has likened Pres. Obama's policies to socialism.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Another prominent Republican told the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday that the president’s spending plans are pushing the country to the brink of socialism.

Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, the only member of the senate to earn a perfect rating from the American Conservative Union, called President Obama “the world’s best salesman of socialism” on Friday in describing his prime time speech earlier this week.

DeMint, a fierce opponent of government expansion, told the CPAC crowd that conservatives might have to “take to the streets to stop America’s slide into socialism.”

His remarks comes a day after Mike Huckabee told the conference of conservative activists that “the Union of American Socialist Republics is being born” with the president’s stimulus package.

“Lenin and Stalin would love this stuff,” Huckabee said of the government bailing out financial institutions.

If America is sliding towards socialism, we must erect a monument to its father: George Bush.

Sick and sad. These ultra-conservative nut jobs have nothing positive or productive to say, so they fall back to the same ole' toxic partisan rhetoric every time. After all, their president grew the government and ignored a screaming economy for eight freaking years. Did they say anythingabout the economy or a huge government then? So we find ourselves in a disastrous mess. Do they offer a solution? No, they just whine and complain like spoiled children. ENOUGH! If you bring nothing of value to the table, shut up and get out of the way!

Although I consider myself moderate, I'm fine with being called a socialist. A capitalist socialist I guess. The republicans want to redefine the meanings of words. Maybe I'm a communist according to the republicans. That's why I don't take anything republicans say seriously anymore.

Conservatives have been running the country for the last eight years, with full control of the executive and legislative for six. If this were the first time that huge deficits were run up under a conservative president they could argue that Bush was an anomaly but this happened under Reagan too, and a Democratic administration had to clean up their mess .The Republican purveyors of blind deregulation, cronyism and emasculation of the SEC have no credability at all and no alternative ideas to fix this mess, just bluster..The myth of Republican fiscal responsibility is officially dead, RIP.

I love these people who keep insisting that the Bush years were this boom time. The fact remains that we only saw a net gain of 2 million jobs in eight years, which is anemic when compared with the previous administrations. What was Jim DeMint doing in the last eight years, or was he part of the rubberstamping machine that looked the other way and refused to deal with the problem untill it blew up in our collective faces? Its easy to talk tough when you have no power, but I doubt Mr. DeMint would be as decisive were the situation reversed.

    For you Democrats...Socialism:

1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2 a: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property b: a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
3: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done

We are already there...can't argue with the dictionary...

IT FIGURES. The first poster to even mention race was a liberal democrat. you just cant stop them from hating so much and they will never acknowledge that HISTORICALLY it is their party that is known as the party of slavery and that it was the REPUBLICANS who went all out to free the slaves (LINCOLN RING A BELL?) but it was the DEMOCRATS that refused to allow it to happen. Even today, black america is enslaved to the party. most could not tell you anything about the party except that when a democrat is in office, free services flow. again, IT FIGURES.

Am I supposed to recoil at the word "socialism"?

The unintelligent among us equate socialism to communism.

Any country worth its salt provides and guarantees the foundation for sucess. That is: Education & Health.

If that's socialism, where do I sign up? For you are only as great as your weakest citizen.

Do a search on how well the socialized medical systems in Canada & Great Britian are working and see if that's what you want. If Obama is truely trying to reform health care and bring down costs part of this must be medical malpractice tort reform which has been absent from all he has put forth. This is not suprising since the trial and unions were the 2 largest contributors to Obama and the DNC. Whats good for the trial bar is not good for you and I

Both of the parties got us into this mess! Democrats controlled Congress the past 4 years with a Republican president. Get your head out of your mainstream liberal media's butt. Now that we have a Democrat president – you people can't stand if someone criticizes or slams him. You had no problem when the media was slamming republicans. Hypocritical people!

Everyone just throws "Socialist" around these days, apparently without even knowing what the ideology is. Obama is pretty darn far from socialism.

As a moderate Republican, I have no problem admitting that Bush did his part in spending this country to financial ruin. He also turned a blind eye to the greed on wall street and the frenzy of a housing market. Please realize, that those aspects have really nothing to do with the war as many claim. Much of that links back to the Clinton years in which his policy was to push home ownership for EVERYBODY...helping lead to the housing issue we have now and the spark which set this economy on fire. I think we as a country need to accept that we are broke and that we can no longer consume with no regard. That is why I think we should just bite the bullet and not have so much packed into a stimulus that simply tries to sustain our current love for consumption. Paying this back is going to cripple us further in the future for generations to come!!!!!

What country are you people talking about. This isn't communism its socialism. The USA has been a socialist country for years we just don't describe it that way. The "Fairness Doctrine" is an idea advanced by Pillboy and his like. Obama has no intention of putting that back up and Sean Insanity knows that. It gives him something to talk (complain) about. Trickle down economics does not work. The rich guy still has the porshe and the poor guy still has to wash it for him for a pack of gum. Reagan the pinnicle of Republican thought instituted socailism when he bailed out the S&L companies. Was that due to a lack of regulation. Just maybe.

Show me where I am wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Totally inflammatory remarks and unnecessary. Huckabee should be ashamed to fuel such vitriole...The Republicans are so out of touch, too old and need a major paradigm shift if they expect to be players.

  23. Oh Boy!!!???

I am siding with the Anti-Christ. He has a plan that works best for all not just the "holy-god-fearing-rich" folks.

Was their a plan in place for when the wheels fell off a few years back? Was there a plan to stay out of a bogus war?

Now that we are here in the now, what is their plan? If everyone gets a tax break, who pays the bill? We've allowed our leaders to do this to us.

The money has to come from somewhere.

America, let's pay this tab and never let the top 1% run the rest of us!!!

    So what?
hes not taking away the right to start a business or buy and sell freely.
I don't care what he does as long as I have work, food, and somewhere to live.

How this government spending different from spending 3 trillion dollars on a needless war? It's going where we actually need it.

I think we have all had enough of listening to anything Republicans have to say. After 8 years of George Bush and the policies that have put the entire world economy in serious trouble, I think the best thing Rep could do is accept responsibility and not say another word for 8 years.
