Michael Steele is a "BIG JOKE" , go sit down some where you fool!

I disagree with Steele. While I am not a socialist per se, I beleive that the bush policies got us into this economic mess. For one, the market forces alone odviously don't self regulate. Next, you cannot just focus on more wars and not focus on supporting your own people.

Next, we need to do some of the things the stimulus package is going to be used for. One is the need to start weaning off the addiction to oil. This is because the world is starting to run short on it. If you don't beleive me, read the blogs by Matthew Simmons (who by the way is a republican and not an environmentalist), Richard Heinberg, Colin Campbell, James Howard Kunstler, and others. Next, millions of teachers lost their jobs with the recent budget crunch and the stimulus will put people back to work.

What the republicans don't get is that they need to sometimes consider domestic, non-war related issues a priority and to act on them. The collapse of Bear Stearns and all the home foreclosures soaring should have been a warning sign that deregulating the banking industry was not working and that a disaster was in the works.

I continue to be completely astounded at the ignorance and arrogance of the Rebulican Party. The party has been hijacked by extreme right wing politics and right wing evangelical beliefs. I was a republican for 30 years and have switched my affiliation to Democrat. 8 years of Bush/Cheney was more than I could stomache and after the complete crash of our banking system from greed of the wealthiest Americans it is more than time for a change to new ideas.

The Obama administration might not make a perfect move with every move they make but I sincerely believe they are looking out for every american and truely want us all to succeed.

I am 100% behind Obama and will be contributing financially to any opponent of a Reblican in the 2010 election.

The scary reality is that the concept of keeping people victims is key for the Democrat party. I think the last two years of complete Democrat control of Congress scared off investors and business people. The GDP dropped over 6% in the last quarter of 2008 on the news and reality of Obama's victory. I suggest reading Michael Lewis' article The End on the economic crisis on portfolio dot com December 2008 issue. It is a great read, very entertaining and very insightful.

By keeping interest rates too low for too long post 2001, the Federal Reserve overstimulated the housing market. With the widespread use of Adjustable Rate Mortgages, when these mortgages "reset" to higher rates (typically 5 years after they were taken out), the borrowers faced difficulties paying their new monthly payments. Both those who gave the loans and those who took these loans are to blame.

Bush relaxed regulations on Fannie and Freddie and allowed these quasi governmental agencies to buy lower quality mortgages (or grouped mortgages) – the banks could then sell these loans quickly and no longer cared about the underlying quality of the loan as much as to whether the loan conformed to a series of criteria that could be packed and sold on to the market.

Banks are not required to lend who cannot afford to pay them back – this is simply not true. If you are trying to reference the Community Reinvestment Act that was from 1977. The banks were lending to questionable people because it was profitable for them to do so – commercial banks, investment banks and insurance companies all made very nice fees from the mortgages and their securitizations.

If you are looking for a Clinton era initiative to blame, the one to consider is the Graham-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999 – which allowed Citibank and Travelers to merge. This allowed commercial banks and investment banks to merge. When times were good and investment banks were reaping profits, the banking system benefitted from additional equity in the banks and additional lending took place. When the stock market fell, highly levered banks with proprietary trading operations saw their equity get crushed.

As banks have equity requirements which affect their lending abilities, with less equity, the banks are able to lend less. Furthermore, the risk models that the national banks were using, typically did not predict a countrywide collapse in home prices. As such, the banks' falling equity limited the banks ability to lend.

I hope this helps clear up some of the misconceptions – do read the Michael Lewis article – it is great.

First off, CRA did not have the ability to force any bank to make a bad loan. Secondly, the majority of loans that deafulted came from mtge cos and other institutions that weren't even regulated by CRA.

The cause was more than anything greed among the investment banks, and people who thought they could buy more home than they shoud have been able afford. And the regulatory and rating agencies did nothing.

My good friend finally made good her escape to another city following years of being the recepient of domestic abuse from an ignorant, insensitive, stingy, impotent, self-centered swine.

Arrogance did not allow him to see what was happening right under his nose as her sister and I helped her pack up the kitchen...I recall wishing I could be a fly on the wall on Friday evening when he returned to an echoing house.

The victim's sister later relayed the drama that included much weeping and gnashing of teeth – "why did she leave me...what did I do...I want her to come back home...bla, bla, bla..." Responding very superficially when the dust settled, he diminished any level of culpability on his part, thus, never truly accepted responsibility for the disintegration of the union.

Having abused her for so long, HE SEEMED NOT TO HAVE A CLUE WHY SHE LEFT HIM – That she had grown tired of having the life leeched out of her while getting nothing in return...Like an open grave, he only took...life was all about him...his needs and wants.

I recall thinking... "IF HE REALLY HASN'T FIGURED OUT WHY SHE LEFT HIM, SHE WOULD BE A FOOL TO GO BACK (for more of the same)!"

I have read many posts on here and there is a lot of anger towards the Republican Party. I don't pretend to know much but here is what I do know....
This mess was started during the Clinton Era when the Banks were told to make loans to people who couldn't afford it. By the time Bush became President, the affects of this was not evident. It took some time for people to realize that they couldn't afford the loans they had taken out. So far, 95-98% of people are current on thier loans. But those that were bad scared the banks into tighter lending procedures. When people found out that they couldn't get credit and loans, they paniced and stopped spending which caused the market to drop. And it doesn't help every time President Obama gives a speech. Yes, people are loosing thier jobs, but this is not as bad as you think it is. But if we keep spending money we don't have, this is going to get a lot worse.

No one over 40 should run for office in the GOP.

Go back and look at your history. For the past 30 years whenever the retaliban party was in power, they were not fiscally responsible, the government grew and every single one was for the rich and the corporations. Just because you keep saying something does not make it true.

I like safe food, good roads and bridges, and I think if you have over 75% percent of the wealth you can afford to pay more than 40% of the taxes. I know it is nice for you if those of us who share the 25% pay 60% of the taxes, but we find it kind of hard to survive on a day to day basis.

The GOP is living in the twilight zone. They have dumbed their party down so much; they vote against their own interest. If the GOP believes Jindal, Palin or Steele is the answer to Obama, they are sadly mistaken. They continue to live in the past and have been preaching tax cuts and small government for almost thirty years. America voted for change and we don't want anything resembling the last 8 years. Our country is in shambles, and the GOP wants us to trust them and complains about everything President Obama does. Now they are blaming everything on Bush, when they were appropriating spending in congress and running up hugh deficits, using fuzzy math on the budgets. Now after they screws things up with deregulation, trade swaps and derivatives, tax breaks for corporations moving abroad, tax cuts for corporation and the wealthy, two war, no bid contract, etc., the GOP is concerned about the deficit. At this point, the only people who continue to fooled is the "Elmer Gantry and Lonesome Rhodes crowd" and if you've seen either of these movies, you'll know exactly what I mean.

The GOP voters are mostly rural whites who do not have access to information to form intellectual decisions. They depend on Limbaugh, Hannity, Fox and republican politicians for information. But change is on the way, broadband is coming to rural areas soon and you will be able to do their own research and realize the lies you have been told.

Why do I get the feeling that most of the negative,vile anti Republican comments on here come from that 19 to 29 year old age group that know absolutely NOTHING about politics!! In short, It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than it is to speak and remove ALL doubt!

I'm a democrate. A FISCAL democrat, though you would be hardpressed to believe such beings existed. If the GOP would actually PROPOSE something, AN ALTERNATIVE, a PLAN (can anyone think of more synonyms?) I would listen to them very attentively. I believe in bipartisan ship but I am also a realist.

I am well-versed in economics for a biochemist with an MBA who only works in a hospital laboratory. Adam Smith, no offense, is a little outdated–by about 233 years. The GOP still believes in this philosophy. As times change so do economic philosphies. David Ricardo, Thomas Malthus, John Stuart Mill, Marxism, and John Maynard Keynes were brilliant economists from which we have derived our academic beliefs, in fact have tried to morph them into one belief: democracy.

Though not an economist by trade I read about it constantly, am fascinated by it. The more I learn the more I realize that we just may be unwilling to admit that democracy has the potential to be a failure; that is, a failed economic model. Is that un-American? Absolutely to some, but from an academic standpoint it is merely an objective conclusion drawn from years of data that is ever-increasingly pointing in this direction.

Will there be a revolution? With the upheaval, anger, bitterness and downright plausibility of a Wall Street Meltdown, factories closing, inflation rising, unemployment rising, GDP decreasing, the dollar losing value, the home sector losing value, the retail and building sector losing value, the consumer confidence index dropping consistently........there IS going to be a BANG at some point. And you can't blame Obama, or Bush, or Clinton, or Reagan, or Carter or whoever. For a moment consider that they have been the guide that has kept the train on the tracks. The tracks, symbolically being democracy as we know it, seem to be running short.

Government intervention is necessary because it is the ONLY entity with the weight to push things through with sheer force of will. Ultimately, 100 years from now, our grandchildren just may be reading about us the way we read about the former "Great Philosophers."

Think about it. You may say this scenario is impossible. In science, we NEVER say anything is impossible: we say it is highly unlikely, for there is always the chance.......

I am so pleased that President Obama is addressing the health care problem, education the economy, infrastructure and global warming. If McCain had won we would be spending all of our money fighting Iran by now. You all have noticed that the war rhetoric has calmed down. President Obama is winding down the Iraq war and will solve the problems in Afghanistan. He is a thinking person and will lead this country out of the horrible mess that the bush/cheney regime got us into.

As a long standing inedpendent I try to be open minded and listen to all points of view but this is really getting absurd. Is the Republican Party no longer capable of hearing what is being said by their own members? Obama didn't win because he was black, he won because he offered a new perspective, beating out the "heir apparent" of his own party. Palin is a fool, Jindhal is becoming a fool, and Steele is clueless. "Traditional values"? How about listening to what the majority of Americans are saying: WE WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT! Trickle down economics, tax cuts, and military spending don't work anymore! Conservative spending? How about the nearly $700 BILLION spent in Iraq, most of it borrowed from China, and for what? Saddam is gone, big deal. What difference does that make in the world? And why was that expenditure OK but spending the same amount on AMERICAN SOIL is somehow irresponsible? I've noticed that the media keeps refering to Obama's first term. Perhaps this is subconscious recognition of the fact that there will be a second. If the Republicans keep doing what they are doing they will be lucky if they have any seats left in four years. I can't wait for the story lines in 2012: Joe the Plumber dukes it out with Sarah Palin and Bobby Jindhal for the opportunity to be slaughtered by Obama.

So, I keep reading that Michael Steele is a "token" for the republicans and that he is in place to try and steal some of President Obama's thunder, i.e. the minority vote, but as a young conservative I agree with him. I don't want him to get ahead because I think he is gonna sway some voters by his skin color, I want him because I disagree with most liberal policies and so does he.

I would like someone to tell me where it has been written that republicans are narrow minded and bigots. What is wrong with our education system today? I sit and read and listen to the young generation and they somehow believe that Corporations started as Big Corporations. I always here that they are ruining Mom and Pop stores and hurting the little guy trying to make it. Do you not realize that at one time these corporations were the little guy? They excelled and became bigger with new and innovative ideas. It also scares me how many people truly believe the government owes them – healthcare, dental, homes, transportation and everything for life. That the rich should be punished for being rich and foot the bill for everything. I guess they do not realize that if everyone paid the same percentage the rich would already pay more, but it is even worse. The rich pay a higher percentage the more they make. I am a registered Republican who voted Democrat in this election. As long as the GOP continues to pander to the far right I will not be supporting it. Most of the Republicans I know, including myself and my husband, and many of our friends and neighbors are more moderate in many of our beliefs. The party as it is organized now is not inclusive regardless of its new leadership and how it appears to be representing itself. I was not impressed with Bobby Jindal the other night. If he and Sarah Palin are the future of the party, I will not be supporting it.

Obama's proposed "smart government", "government works for people". GOP still tries to promote old "limited government" which means "do-nothing" government. Once, when I was in a car accident, I totalled my car. It was my fault. I was driving too fast. But despite that , a good semaritan stopped and helped me. He called the ambulance, he called my husband. My car was totalled, but I escaped injury.

An interesting couple of camera shots during Obamas speech on Tuesday. Both were close-ups, one was of Mitch McConnel and the other McCain, in each case Pres. Obama had just made a point and in each instance both McConnel and McCain leaned to their right and spoke out of the side of their mouth to the person sitting next to them, then got up and did the 'token gesture' clap. I never could trust anyone who talks out of the side of their mouth. Still 'Old boys' doing the same old thing, those guys would stab anyone in the back to retain their positions, even the entire country. Those are the only traditional Republican values I am aware of.

By the way...I am tired of hearing Republicans say that Dems of the past caused this crisis(Carter, Clinton anybody?). Really? Do some research...the GOP has been in power roughly 20 years to the Dems. roughly 13 years (I was born in 1979). Since I have been alive you have been running the show. You are not going to convince me that Dems. have done more harm in 13 than the Reps. did in 20.
