Obama announces first DOT-funded stimulus construction project

The President visited the Department of Transportion Tuesday.

The President visited the Department of Transportion Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Barack Obama announced Tuesday that the country is already "seeing shovels hit the ground" on the first infrastructure repair project funded through the Transportation Department's share of the $787 billion stimulus bill.

Watch: New roads save lives, Obama says

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood added, "The work begins today in Montgomery County, Maryland, where a work crew is starting on a project to resurface Maryland State Highway 650 - a very busy road that has not been fully repaired in 17 years."

Obama and LaHood made the announcement during an appearance before federal workers at the Transportation Department.

The resurfacing contract, LaHood said, went to a Pennsylvania-based family-owned company, America Infrastructure.

LaHood said the project will support 60 jobs. "And that's how we're going to get the country back on its feet," he added.

The stimulus plan - signed two weeks ago - will ultimately help steer $28 billion in new federal funds to highway construction and repair - part of the "largest new investment in America's infrastructure since President Eisenhower built the Interstate Highway System," Obama noted.

Obama stated that, over the next few weeks, the country will launch more than 200 construction projects nationwide, "fueling growth in an industry that's been hard hit by our economic crisis."

He promised that, all together, the new highway spending will create or save 150,000 jobs by the end of next year - more jobs "being created or saved in one year than GM, Ford and Chrysler have lost in manufacturing over the past three years combined."

Obama also announced that the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve are launching the Consumer and Business Lending Initiative on Tuesday. When fully implemented, Obama said, the initiative "will generate up to a trillion
dollars in new lending for the American people, and this will help unlock our
frozen credit markets, which is absolutely essential for economic recovery."

"If its not in my backyard, I'm against it." That seems to be the attitude of many of the posters to this site. I regret we seem to care little about our neighbors. America, get a heart! People are hurting!

Big deal, resurfacing one road does nothing.

We need to see some real results.

    Get the economy moving Obama!

You have now spent almost 3 TRILLION dollars in less than 2 months and have failed all of us. Forget the pork and tax increases, real people are suffering. Show us that you are not a clown and do something or go down as the worst president in US history.

The stimulus officially begins today so everyone can monitor to see where the money is flowing and hopefully witness the results in the economy. April 1 is when taxpayers will begin seeing increases in our take-home pay. We can only hope these things help somewhat but all Americans can help NOW by buying energy efficent appliances and energy star products. Even replacing light bulbs with CFLs or LEDs helps the economy and the environment!!!

Well here it goes, the end of high profits in wheel alignment shops. I think the shops need lobbyists or substidies to cover their lost revenue. There's always some special interest groups whining about something.

The DC area could use some help. There are too many major water main breaks in an area that is supposed to be the national capital. The last one nearly caused people to drown in their cars and authorities are blaming this on outdated infrastructure. Obama can now pick up the slack because Bush's eyes were fixated on Iraq and not not the area right under his nose.

Hey David, make sure you teach your children that they have to clean toilets in hotels, wash dishes in restaurants, pick up trash in the streets of America, pick crops because these are the jobs Americans don't want or I should say refuse to do so if there are illegals working the streets it is because we as a society are above getting our hands dirty. What is funny about the crops a lot of them are owned by other illegals or I should say were brought here after the war (s) By the way I am not an illegal so don't even go there.

Amazing. You gave the last guy 8 YEARS to make the country better all the while sticking your heads in the sand about the exploding national deficit and debt. Bush did not veto a single spending bill until 2006(hmm wonder why) but you never questioned it. Now you want Obama to fix in 3 months what it took Bush 8 years to screw up.

Pilonidal abscesses look like a large pimple at the bottom of the tailbone, just above the crack of the buttocks. It is more common in men than in women. It usually happens in young people up into the fourth decade of life.
