McAuliffe asks Republican to condemn Limbaugh remarks

McAuliffe is trying to make Rush Limbaugh a campaign issue.
McAuliffe is trying to make Rush Limbaugh a campaign issue.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – As national Democrats eagerly point to Rush Limbaugh’s influence among Republicans, one Virginia Democrat is looking to make the radio host a flash point in this year’s governor’s race.

Terry McAuliffe, the former Democratic National Committee chairman now seeking his party's nomination for governor, sent a letter Tuesday to the de facto Republican nominee, former state Attorney General Bob McDonnell, asking him to reject Limbaugh’s recent statement that he wants President Obama to fail.

“I know that you and I disagree on many issues, but I'm hoping that we can agree on this: hoping for failure isn't the right way to get our economy back on track,” McAuliffe wrote in the letter. “That's why I'm asking you to join me in condemning the remarks Rush Limbaugh made wishing for the President to fail.”

McAuliffe wrote that Virginians are concerned with getting the economy back on track and that Limbaugh’s comments are not constructive.

“I hope you'll join me in calling for Rush to start taking an approach that reflects the best of what our system stands for,” McAuliffe wrote.

McDonnell campaign spokesman Tucker Martin said McAuliffe "desperately wants our attention."

"And if he wins his competitive and tough primary in June he will get it," Martin said. "Until then, we wish him the best of luck.”

Current Virginia governor and DNC Chairman Tim Kaine highlighted Limbaugh’s influence in the GOP in multiple cable appearances Tuesday, calling the polarizing radio talker “the godfather” and “Wizard of Oz” of the Republican Party.

McAuliffe is competing against former House delegate Brian Moran and state senator Creigh Deeds in a three-way Democratic primary.

If this was Bush enacting these ludicrous pork laden plans you would all be calling for failure but since it is Obama its o.k. Now that Bush is gone lets jump on Rush. How many of you have been as successful as him? Rush has 33 million reasons to laugh at you libs all the way to the bank. By the way when the dimwitocrats took control of the house in Nov 2006 election DOW was at 12000, march 2009 now at 6800. Whatever happened to its the economy stupid?

The Democrats are seriously beating a dead horse here. This is soooo ridiculous! Limbaugh does NOT, I repeat, does NOT want this country to fail. He wants Obama's attempt at making America a Socialist society to fail. If anyone would actually listen to his speech at CPAC instead of blindly believing what the media and Rahmbo Emmanuel tells them to believe, then people would understand.
Just one more thing- while Bush was in office, not a day went by that some crazy liberal was pronouncing for Bush to fail. Where in the world was the outrage?!?!?!? I am sick of the hypocrisy!

I could just have imagined what the righty's reaction would've been if someone publicly wished Bush's Iraq adventure would've failed.

    Where's the OUTRAGE?!?!?!

    This is treason!

He should be banned from the public airwaves!

America is in economic turmoil because of the republican deregulation of the financial marketplace allowing greed and corruption to take place on a grand scale. Now, the chief spokesperson for the republican party Rush Limbaugh is leading the charge to defeat the economic recovery. I wonder what Americans think about Rush? How many out-of-work good ol boys and how many conservative football moms looking at their savings and retirement accounts think that Rush is their leader? Let's see a poll on what Americans think about Rush's hoping that our President fails in our national economic recovery.

Ange@Where have you been, George Soros, the unions, ACORN all democrats aided by their trusty comrades in the media, attacked Bush every minute of every day he was in office and spread the lies and the deceit. What you will read in this blog shows that. Democrats are the meanest, most evil things ever created.

I agree with George the Democrat. I would put Rush' picture on all things Republican. It will solidify the repub. base to be sure but, it will make them a regional party at best.

There's no need to go to the trouble of condemning Limbaugh's comments when we can just ignore him.

As usual the liberal Dems hear only what they want to hear.....Yes, Rush did say he wants Obama to fail. Why? Because if he succeds, it means that the great U.S.A. as we knew it will cease to exist. We will turn into a socialist country where those with personal responsibility will always have to support those individuals who are used to hand-outs from the federal government...I'll leave it to you to figure out who they are (hint, they are not Rush supporters).

    Beth:

We did hear his comments at CPAC – that's the problem for him ... and you ... and the rest of your archaic, fossilized ilk.

  16. Rush and bin Laden want America to fail!!!

Even if Rush does not agree with Pres Obama he needs to shut up just like he asked any dissenters from Bush to 'shut up' (ie, the Dixie Chicks, etc). The Republicans are the only ones throwing the word 'socialism' around as if that scares people. It's only good for the Republicans when the wealthiest few are prospering and the rest of us have to redistribute our wealth to help the wealthiest become wealthier.

Get a life Republicans! America will always have capitalism and no one believes your fearful rhetoric of 'socialism'. COME UP WITH SOME SOLUTIONS TO OUR ECONOMIC PROBLEMS THAT CAN ACTUALLY WORK!!!

  19. Perceptive

The Republicans keep tossing the term "Socialism" around only because it makes people nervous. But really... would you expect anything else? Scare tactics have been an integral part of their politics for years.

You know: "We've got ot keep America safe. Terrorists are everywhere and ready to attack. If we don't torture them, Americans will die. Gays are ruining the moral fabric of America and causing the destruction of the family. Marriage is under attack. We have to go to war because of WMD". The list goes on. The threat of socialism is just another inflammatory comment designed to spark fear in the hearts of Americans.

It's hilarious how these so called conservative people complain about big government, socialism this, capitolism that, when the fact is most of these conservatives are far from RICH at all most of you live out in rural america that dont have anything else to do but complain all the time those people at the CPAC conference would take government aid in a HEART BEAT and they know it. If RUSH knows exactly what he's talking about instead of being on RADIO just to pop his gums he should be on a ballot somewhere so his followers could vote for him for something but of course that won't happen because he doesnt know anything just like most conservatives think they have the answer for everyone in AMERICA it's always their way and no one elses that's why you guys will forever be STUCK ON STUPID!! The fact of the matter is things are shifting, conservatives are becoming the MINORITY and thats what your really afraid of. You guys need to wake up you won't WIN ELECTIONS with just your base only and for some reason you dont seem to realize that but it's cool just keep listening to RUSH and people like him the sooner you cease to exist the better!!

Libs, you must be afraid of mid-term elections. You've already started your typical smear tactics. Can't you be at all original in your political strategies? How about talking about your accomplishments and the positives about your sacred "watch us walk on water" Party? Oh yea, that's right – you've got nothing but pork spending, record deficits, escalating a war in Afghanistan and a tax cheat in charge of the Treasury. Way to go!

Seattle, Get your head out of your arse. The lefties did wish Bush's Iraq war would fail. Did you not watch the news? They repeatedly said they weren't going to fund the war only to not stand for their convictions. Didn't you see all of the protests by Code Pink outisde of Bush's ranch? Harry Reid even said the war was lost. So don't come off all high and mighty.
