McAuliffe asks Republican to condemn Limbaugh remarks

McAuliffe is trying to make Rush Limbaugh a campaign issue.

McAuliffe is trying to make Rush Limbaugh a campaign issue.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - As national Democrats eagerly point to Rush Limbaugh’s influence among Republicans, one Virginia Democrat is looking to make the radio host a flash point in this year’s governor’s race.

Terry McAuliffe, the former Democratic National Committee chairman now seeking his party's nomination for governor, sent a letter Tuesday to the de facto Republican nominee, former state Attorney General Bob McDonnell, asking him to reject Limbaugh’s recent statement that he wants President Obama to fail.

“I know that you and I disagree on many issues, but I'm hoping that we can agree on this: hoping for failure isn't the right way to get our economy back on track,” McAuliffe wrote in the letter. “That's why I'm asking you to join me in condemning the remarks Rush Limbaugh made wishing for the President to fail.”

McAuliffe wrote that Virginians are concerned with getting the economy back on track and that Limbaugh’s comments are not constructive.

“I hope you'll join me in calling for Rush to start taking an approach that reflects the best of what our system stands for,” McAuliffe wrote.

McDonnell campaign spokesman Tucker Martin said McAuliffe "desperately wants our attention."

"And if he wins his competitive and tough primary in June he will get it," Martin said. "Until then, we wish him the best of luck.”

Current Virginia governor and DNC Chairman Tim Kaine highlighted Limbaugh’s influence in the GOP in multiple cable appearances Tuesday, calling the polarizing radio talker “the godfather” and “Wizard of Oz” of the Republican Party.

McAuliffe is competing against former House delegate Brian Moran and state senator Creigh Deeds in a three-way Democratic primary.

"Seattle" – What on earth are you talking about? The liberals didn't just hope Bush's plan would fail, they said it did. It was Murtha or some other liberal traitor that said we lost the war in Iraq. As far as banning people from the airways, that's probably on Obama's Socialist/Communist agenda. Why do you think so many Americans want Obama's plan for a "New" America to fail???????

Too bad the blind Obamabots can't think for themselves.

We lost lives because of the Bush war that was a lie. thay is why we spoke out against him. we again lost lives when Katrina hit and again Bush lied to us. that is why we spoke out this new President has not lied to us and we have not lost AMERICAN lives because of it. so please stop saying Dems were all over bush all the time. he stole an election but we still had faith and i believe we were all behind him on 9/11/01. But as you can see his policies were dead wrong so we had every right to speak up. i guess being a socialist is better than being a NAZI that republicains wants us to be with the censorsship and lies that the last 8 years have brought us.

Hey Terry, let those Republicans morons "worship" their NEW GUIDO GODFATHER in Rush Limbaugh. That will only seal their fate even more come 2010 and 2012.

I'm loving this fight going on within the GOP/RNC between Rushy and DA'MAN Steele, who clearly proved he's NOT DA'MAN today. RUSH made it clear he's "DA'MAN". LOL.

It took less than 51 minutes for Michael Steele to tuck his balls between his legs and go slobbering his apologies to the BIG FAT WHITE MAN with the BIG MOUTH!!!! LOL.

Don't cha just love the irony and the hypocrisy of the GOP and RNC? It's like watching vultures eat their own alive! LOL.

Actually, I think Rush is a PERFECT example of a Republican; fat, slothish, obstructionist, selfish, inept, uncooth, immature, and anal retentive; he SHOULD lead the party!!!!!

  11. Why

Comparing Democratic criticism of Bush's illegal war, torture, wiretapping, etc., etc., etc. to Republicans hoping for Obama's failure because of spending to get us out of the mess left by the Bush administration IS JUST ILLOGICAL! And, believe me, that was the nicest way that I could possibly put it.

  12. Rush is a HUGE (in more ways than one) Hater

Don't worry about "Rush-haters" - Rush has more than enough hate to trump all of them put together. In fact - it is all he has. No ideas. No intellect. No solutions. But, plenty of money from spewing hate.

please stop given rush any more airtime he is a disgrace...why isn't he in jail? to say you hope the president to fail is to say you hope the country to fail. i wasn't for going into iraq but i never wanted to see the prez or our country to fail but yet becuse i asked questions and did'nt back the war this guy and the rest of neo cons called me unamerican against the military etc. i always said i would rather be wrong and have to admit to being wrong then to see the prez fail look at our lost in iraq to our own military not to mentions the high numbers of other lives but here we are and these hateful ugly sad losers (HANNITY ANNE C BILLO DELAY RUSH ETC...) hve to continue the hate. please no more airtime let them crawl back into the hole they came from and lets just silence the hate. good debate and different opinion conversation is one thing this is not that

i agree with rush. now that obama is SHOWING HIS TRUE COLORS he has put his party, his socialist agenda, and his allegiance to the Unions ahead of the good of this country. the PROOF of this is wll be that the flawed legislature fm obama and the democrats WILL fail.

obama's neglect of the economy in favor of paybacks to his backers smacks of insincerity, if not treachery.

the sooner the voters realize the liberals HAVE failed, we can get some moderate common sense back into the government. rush is correct, obama's liberal agenda must FAIL if we are to survive his reign.

Republicans/Conservatives appear to be just very nasty nasty people. The hate mongering coming from both of these groups is disgusting. Sure hope the American people can see though this Nazi/sexist/racist mentality.

Typical Dumbocrat trying to make Rush Limbaugh the issue why Obama is going to fail and not deal with the fact that every consumer reporter or economic talk show host has been blasting Obama's simple minded budget and economic plan. Wall Street hates Obama and his plans and they are the only ones with the money to bail us out.

Obama has not addressed the issue and has only made problems worse and harder to solve. This is what you get when you get someone with ZERO experience running a business and put them in charge of the largest company in the world.

I agree. Making a destructive comment like wanting to see the President of the United States fail is so grossly irresponsible that it's hard to imagine. There are countries where you'd be taken outside and shot in the head for making a comment like that.

As part of the younger generation that will probably have to pay for this stimulus bill in the future, I for one can say that I have no qualms about having to! The fact of the matter is that it was republican deregulation of wall street whose greediness was allowed to cause this mess in the first place. I'm really sick of people throwing words like 'socialism' and 'big government' around. I can say that the majority of my peers are sick of the finger pointing and criticisms that the republican party keeps spewing (especially the blatant lies and hate mongering coming out of rush limbaugh). Why not work together with our new president and offer some sort of solution. Something besides the redundant tax cuts for the 1% wealthiest in the US in the hopes that the money will somehow trickle down to the rest of us.

    @One Nation under God

You are so full of crap. You sound like you are about ready to cry. We have every right to criticize this President the way you and liberal lefties tried to wish for defeat in Iraq. You don't want to admit it now, but you can't change history. Democrats ran on failure in Iraq. However, we won. Too bad for the Democrats, because they look like fools.

Where is all of this anger coming from. I think Rush is a huge blowhard, but I don't have to listen to him.

You people who say terrible, cruel things against Obama need to grow up. This is exactly the kind of vile garbage Rush, O'Reilly, Coulter, Hannity and the rest put out. You parrot it. Can you not hear yourselves? THAT'S THE PROBLEM!
