Vets object to billing private insurance for service injuries

Veterans groups say it's wholly unacceptable to charge their private insurance for service injuries.
Veterans groups say it's wholly unacceptable to charge their private insurance for service injuries.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Veterans groups are warning President Barack Obama against going ahead with a possible administration move to charge veterans' private health care for service-related injuries.

In a letter sent by 11 of the most prominent veterans organizations, the groups warned that the idea "is wholly unacceptable and a total abrogation of our government's moral and legal responsibility to the men and women who have sacrificed so much."

CNN obtained a copy of the letter sent to the White House last Friday by groups including The American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

Read the letter

A White House spokesman would neither confirm nor deny the option is being considered.

"The details of specific proposals will be transmitted with the full submission in April. The president has made it clear that meeting the needs of veterans is one of his priorities, and as a result has requested an 11 percent increase in discretionary funding for 2010, and the administration is actively working with the veterans community to ensure we get the details of this budget right," said White House spokesman Nick Shapiro.

In the letter, the groups said they have been told by sources on Capitol Hill and at the VA that the idea under consideration would allow the Department of Veterans Affairs to bill health insurance for a treatment of a disability or injury that was a result of military service.

Just another pointless complaint by Vet groups who would rather not see Obama in office. Obama will support Vet rights strongly, arguably more so than many of his fellow Dems and Republican counterparts.

"the groups said they have been told by sources on Capitol Hill and at the VA that the idea under consideration would allow the Department of Veterans Affairs to bill health insurance for a treatment of a disability or injury that was a result of military service."

So – a source that won't be named publicly throws out a juicy rumor and these 11 groups pop their top, not even knowing if there is a shred of truth to it. Nit wits.

Why, oh why, do so many take to heart and respond to "junk news?" Why not wait for the actual proposal to surface? Why not do some research and get your facts straight?

If this is indeed proposed, these 11 groups will be have their time in the media to object (and I agree, they should...) – But please – don't get your undies in a wad before it's a confirmed proposal.

Let me get this straight . . . the President is in favor of Universal Health Care for everyone except those that have served this country. He is replacing the obligation of our nation to care for our Veterans with private industry for the ACORN'S of the world . . . Wake Up America.

As a Vet. I am not sure what this all about. It seems to me what President Obama is doing, is making sure our Vets get treated in ever way possible. So what is wrong with that?

President Kennedy said it, THEY WILL SPRING UP AMONGST US and they are here and its Obama, Pelosi and the rest of the DEMONCRATES.

God Bless Our Troops and Our VETS, these are the people who secure your freedom, its not the demoncrates.

The Vets should get the royal treatment, since they have put their lives on the line and yes Obama is thinking about them, moreso than Bush had done. Our Vets is our national heros... Whether you are stateside or aboard.

    That is my opinion

Let's force the politcians to get their own health care coverage instead of then using the Military services at Walter Reed Hospital.

I'm not sure if this plan will work. I realize that the govt is trying to cover costs and that's commendable, but I don't think my insurance company will cover war-related injuries; i.e. the standard "war claus" found in most insurance policies.

I trust CNN will keep us up to date on this story – and will use confirmed sources instead of unnamed sources.

You serve anytime in uniform? This is not a pointless complaint. The government has an obligation to treat those who have served and were injured in war. You are cheering homeowner and Wall Street bailouts. Why not this? Politically, vets are like everyone else some voted for Obama and some did not. The first half of your complaint makes no sense!

They are right to loose their top over this...best to squash the rumor before it 'appears as a truth'.

Why is it that CNN allows for 1200 comments when it is about Palin, Rush, or anything conservative, but only 6 when the story is critical of Obama? CNN does what it has to to protect liberals and the socialist agenda of this administration.

    floridakaye,

The reason these groups are "popping their top" over such rumors is because if it is true and they wait until April to find out it WILL BE TOO LATE. These veteran groups will have to compete with all of the other hacked off entities for air time.

If this is true, Obama will not get reelected. This is not a good policy for him to sign.

That man in the white house is so emotionally tainted, immature and inexperienced that he does not understand anything about real sacrifice for this country. Good luck, vets. I just hope things don't continue to get worse for you with this man in the white house.

Obama is more than willing to bailout everyone else (*including the BIG, BAD BUSINESSES...liberals take note), but not take care of our veterans. How absolutely perfect. Let's also weaken our military, while you're at it, oh Great One...and keep sending your pitbull Hillary on overseas adventures to talk with all the terrorist nations and sympathize with them and what the terrible "Bush Administration" did while trying to protect a bunch of non-appreciative liberal pansies here in the U.S.A.!! The real winner in this is Bill Clinton...not our veterans or troops!

Are the Vets getting proper care? That is the responsibility of the government, not the method of payment.
When Veterans complain about waiting up to 3 monthsfor treatment, usig a mix of private medical and VA hospitals, makes perfect sense.

Thank God those 11 groups are being proactive and voicing their concerns well BEFORE Obama opens his mouth and shoots from the hip again. "A White House Spokesman will neither confirm of deny the option is being considered"...... yep, that's the openness Obama was talking about. Change we can believe in.....

Probably because this president and the Democrat-led Congress have a habit of writing and signing legislation before anyone has an opportunity to actually see what's in it.

It's better to squash any thoughts of forcing our veterans to pay fees to treat their war-related wounds BEFORE they gain traction.
