House Republicans warn of socialism under Obama

Bachmann sounded the socialism alarm on Thursday.

Bachmann sounded the socialism alarm on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Some Republicans in Congress are continuing to warn that President Obama is intent on turning the United States into a socialist nation.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann pressed the socialism argument on Thursday, telling a conservative radio show that the Obama administration is "completely socializing the American economy" with its mortgage relief proposals and bailouts of financial institutions.

"What we've seen them do in the last five weeks is nothing short of a great leap forward toward than finalizing a place of socialism in American economic life," Bachmann told radio host G. Gordon Liddy. "We have never seen this level of socialism in the history of our country, and I think the American people would be floored when they understand the dramatic steps that Obama has taken for our future."

Bachmann called for a "a growth future, a prosperity future, a freedom liberty future."

"Will we be a country that will go forward with liberty, freedom and prosperity, or will we be a country that's mired in Eastern European, Western European doldrums, where freedom is limited and taxation remains high?," she asked.

Bachmann wasn't the only House Republican to say as much on Thursday.

Tennessee Rep. Zach Wamp, who is also running for governor in his home state, told MSNBC that the president's health care proposals represent "a fast march toward socialism."

Does anyone REALLY listen to this lunatic? This woman doesn't have a frigging clue of what she's talking about. She' s like a wind-up doll with a Rush Limbaugh record spinning inside her.

where do I start?!? First of all Rep Bachmann needs new handlers. Her frequently displays of her houseplant-like intelligence do the GOP no service. And what would she recommend we do during this deep recession to counter our growing crisis? She recommended nothing because the last 8 years have demonstrated the GOP's religion of plutocracy and an unchecked free market have nearly destroyed our economy. They are bankrupt of ideas so they resort to the "sky is falling" cries of Socialism. It's rather sad a formidible national party can't put one viable idea on the table to challenge the Obama approach. Instead, like children, they resort to hyperbole and empty platitudes – "Blahblah we love freedom and liberty. Obama bad!" Real enlightened.

Lets be wild and say they are right. In the next election we would be right back to our old ways. A preseident cannot make the nation Socialist, to do so the constitution would have to be changed.

For all those who said President Bush failed, well, didn't America then failed? And if America has already failed, how then can President Obama succeed?

This is apparently the only response that Republicans have. They use it for EVERYTHING. Squawk....socialism....socialism...squawk squawk.

If this is socialism, then bring it on, because apparently under Bush, we had a dictator. Being proven now by all of the memos from the Justice Department that are being released.

I am so tired of hearing *Socialism* just a *word* *a label*
I am from Canada and am an older lady who has NEVER paid a doctor bill or a hospital bill in my entire life and I have been to both hundreds of times over the years bc I have been a severe asthmatic all my life!!
We have no insurance companies to pay thru the nose for either!!!
Do we have wait times ...sure... but only for minor ailments but ty I will take OUR health care sytem and wait times over YOURS anyday!!!
Bottom line is NO Canadian has ever lost their home, their life savings
or gone bankrupt over health care!!!!
By the way our country is not a socialist country either!
    We are a free democracy!!!
No person should go without health care!!

What's wrong with Europe? Last I checked the Euro was beating the U.S. dollar to shreds.

Seems like the Republican party is re-branding itself to cater to ignorant xenophobes, homophobes, racists, and any other fear-based irrationality it can attach itself to.

Sorry Bachmann ... but the nutjobs like you are the minority now.

Who cares what Michele Bachmann or any other right wing wack has to say. The bottom line is this. President Obama won the presidency by a very large margin, both by the popular vote and the electoral college vote. People want what he is selling, if the reverese were true there would be a President Mc Cain and more republicans in the house and Senate. Righties like Bachmann have stale ideas and cling to their old ideas and fears. We the people see right through that and have voted for the kind of change President Obama is trying to bring about. I am still try to figure out why anything that may slightly resemble socialism is a bad thing. Maybe we can use some of that and reshape America for the better. It's time for change and what Bachmann and her cronnies reprensent is more of the same no matter what new catch phrase or twisting of terms they use. When Americans finally starts paying attention again like we have begun to we really are not that dumb.
Tell you're story to the hardcore righties thay will never have an open mind because those are the only folks that will listen and they are becoming a fast shrinking audience.

Just which Western European countries is she referring to that have limited freedom and economic doldrums?? The economic doldrums started in the good old USA!!! Most European countries have had stronger growth than the US. You just can never admit that somewhere else might have something going for it and maybe even learn from it. This is why the US is viewed as arrogant around the globe...

Plus what Mr. Obama is proposing is not Socialism...and John McCain wanted mortgage bailouts – does that make the maverick a socialist???

I would like for all of these people who keep screaming socialism would put forth some plans to solve the severe problems that we're having in America. Just simply saying the other person's plan sucks is not going to cut it and the exact reason the Repubs are not in office now. Half the people screaming socialism don't even know what it means in the first place...so sad!
