House Republicans warn of socialism under Obama

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Some Republicans in Congress are continuing to warn that President Obama is intent on turning the United States into a socialist nation.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann pressed the socialism argument on Thursday, telling a conservative radio show that the Obama administration is "completely socializing the American economy" with its mortgage relief proposals and bailouts of financial institutions.

"What we've seen them do in the last five weeks is nothing short of a great leap forward toward than finalizing a place of socialism in American economic life," Bachmann told radio host G. Gordon Liddy. "We have never seen this level of socialism in the history of our country, and I think the American people would be floored when they understand the dramatic steps that Obama has taken for our future."

Bachmann called for a "a growth future, a prosperity future, a freedom liberty future."

"Will we be a country that will go forward with liberty, freedom and prosperity, or will we be a country that's mired in Eastern European, Western European doldrums, where freedom is limited and taxation remains high?," she asked.

Bachmann wasn't the only House Republican to say as much on Thursday.

Tennessee Rep. Zach Wamp, who is also running for governor in his home state, told MSNBC that the president's health care proposals represent "a fast march toward socialism."

    Adam, you are on the money. People quickly forget one of our greatest presidents ever had a very Socialist agenda. FDR's was the reason we got out of the Great Depression (yes Matt in MN, along with WW2). The jobs that were created are the reason we have the roadways we have today, among other things. Republicans need to get their heads out of you know where and wake up.

    I agree, this country does seem to work best, when there is a balance of Capitalism and Socialism, but it is definitely leaning toward Socialism, where even in the very near future, we are going to have a one world Political system, and a one world Government, "So what I say unto you, I say unto all " Watch".

    Socialism is for people who want to be taken care of. Going to socialism there would be no reason to work hard to get ahead, so who would work? Your dog would get better health care than you. Who would want to be a doctor? Why work hard to make good money only to give it to someone who doesn't want to work?

    Cathy--– In 1900 the U.S. deficit was 2 billion dollars, today its 11- 12 trillion. What makes you think government has any business handling any money? The president, the Congress, the Senate, should have to prove they can operate within a budget before we let them handle our tax dollars. This president, Congress, Senate will be the poster men and women for not only term limits,[which the president already has] but for shorter term limits which should be a maximum of 2 terms of 2 years for every branch of government.

    on behalf of my fellow Minnesotans, I apologize for letting her win the election.
    She showed nothing but ineptitude and bigotry during her campaign, and were those opposed to her to unite behind either DFLer Ttinklenberg or Independent Bob Anderson, we would not be dealing with this bull right now.

    It's too bad that none of these lackwits can define "socialism." It's too bad that none of them did ANYTHING to prevent this mess. It's too bad that they are recommending the same one-size-fits-all-problems solutions that they have been promoting – but not doing – since 1964.

    Or, maybe so many sheeple were just wanting to make history, or vote for him from misplaced guilt, or just voted for him because of the color of his skin.

    Whatever the case, it is obvious to people that think for themselves that he is on his way to ruining this country, sending it the same way the Roman Empire went.

    If we as a country want to survive as anything other than a 3rd world country, we need to elect people in 2010 that will block at least the most dangerous of his actions.

    If you not like capitalism, than you must be unwilling to work and make a better life for yourself. Capitalism is what has made this a great nation. Do you enjoy watching what is going on in Venezuela? Is that the kind of country you want to live in? All you liberal wack jobs just don't get it. Yeah, the republicans have really stunk it up for a while now too, but less than 2 years ago we were a booming economy. If you were serious about making this country even better, we would embrace more Libertarian values.

    How on earth is Michele Bachmann a member of congress! I can't believe she got re-elected. Everytime I hear her talk, I just want to crawl into a hole. To me she is just a pretty face and doesn't have anything to contribute politically. And don't ask her a diffuclt question if you don't want her to spin you sick and then not even get a solid answer out of it. And to get to the point of the story, if we don't provide some bailouts and just let everything happen on its own, we are for sure doomed. The more companies that go bust the higher the unemployment rate goes. I don't like all the bailouts anymore than the next person, but really, do we have another option. What they need to do is put a ball and chain on the companies that get the taxpayers money and make sure it is being used for reasons intended.

    Socialism only works if the citizens can handle it. France has free healthcare and higher education, and rich people too! The government is more stable that Venezuela's because French citizens aren't afraid to protest and strike until they get what they want. BTW, how many rich Americans ADORE French products!
