Former White House political adviser Karl Rove, pictured above, and counsel Harriet Miers have agreed to face questions from Congress about allegations of improper political influence in the Justice Department.'

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Former White House political adviser Karl Rove and counsel Harriet Miers have agreed to face questions from Congress about allegations of improper political influence in the Justice Department, the House Judiciary Committee announced Wednesday.

Both will give depositions to investigators from the committee, and claims of privilege will be "significantly limited," according to a statement from the committee. Rove and Miers had been resisting congressional subpoenas about the matter, but a federal judge in Washington ruled that the former Bush administration officials had no grounds to invoke executive privilege in the case.

The committee, led by Rep. John Conyers, D-Michigan, has been investigating claims that Rove and his White House allies fired U.S. attorneys for political reasons and prosecuted officials whom they saw as opponents.

Don't get so excited. People like Karl Rove don't go to jail. He's way to clever for that. He's a professional evil genius. He has reservations at the swankiest hotels, restaurants...oh, and a special place in Hell too. We may never see him and his ilk get the comeuppance they deserve, but I do believe karma catches all. Vengence is Mine sayeth the Lord.

Randall in Torrance - Ha Ha Ha , Rove is Going Down   March 5th, 2009 1:37 am ET

This is going to be good – real good. Bush's brain is finally going to have to face the same government oversight he avoided and ignored for 8 years. Hey baldy, how does it feel knowing that you aren't going to get away with all the BS you kept laughing about behind America's back when you controlled Mr. Puppet President Dubya? Be a real man and take your medicine by telling the truth of how you and Bushie boy from the Texas farm conducted illegal operations behind everyone's back just to ensure nothing would stand in your way (i.e., congressional oversight, public scrutiny, etc.). Where's your loyalty now fat boy? Are you gonna rat out your former weasel head doofus? Ha Ha you're going down slim shady. I can't wait to see this. Great job Representative Conyers. You deserve a medal for bringing this douche bag to justice. Whoa, this is good. This story really made my day. Noting would be better than to see Karly boy Rove in an orange jump suit behind bars. If America's sweetheart Martha Stewart did time, this gives me hope that there is still justice being served in the homeland.

Last time I checked leaking a name of CIA undercover agent was a capital crime in this country. Everybody knows he did it. I'll buy the tickets and bring popcorn – let it fry!!!

Patrick, Snohomish, WA   March 5th, 2009 1:24 am ET

It is about time this man was forced to the carpet to answer questions about his very questionable role in the Bush administration. I doubt if he will face any charges, but far too long, he and Dick Cheney thought they were above the law – you know what? At times they were. But now!

Rob in Detroit Mi.   March 5th, 2009 1:18 am ET

If scarecrow or MRS. King tell one lie then they should go to jail.

Ben in Dallas   March 5th, 2009 1:15 am ET

Judy in PA,

Please.

Bush systematically reduced funding for the SEC. Hampering its investigative capabilities. His cronies made billions off the war. Enron was given special treatment by eliminating the requirement to have documentation on foreign oil purchases.

It is inconceivable that you can blame the mortgage crisis on the democrats. Or the failure of Fannie Mai either.

NotNowMookie   March 5th, 2009 1:14 am ET

I wonder if Rove can squeal like a pig?

skullsoup432   March 5th, 2009 1:03 am ET

Rove, Rush and Mitch McConnell have got to be the ugliest humans on earth. What is sad is that what goes on in their heads is even uglier.

Ohh, Tom, guy who came up with phwase "commander in boob," what a cwever word guy you are! Bet your mommy is weal pwoud of you! What are you, six months old?
Note for the adults out there: this politization of the Justice Department appears to have landed the former Democrat governor of a US State in a US prison on trumped-up charges.

As much as I wish it will happen, we all know Rove will skate.

In fact, the only thing more predictable than that is the usual cast of right wingers coming on this blog and blaming the Clintons and Obama for all that is wrong.

asdf   March 4th, 2009 11:28 pm ET

Commander-in-Boob eh? Guess that continues the tradition for the last eight years except Obama is less likely to start a war solely to hook up his buddies in private industry. I agree the truth should come out about the last eight years but it won't. I agree though so far Obama and the democrats are flailing. One of these days one of the partys will move to the center socially and push true libertarian values and that party will dominate. Both partys seem to advocate big government (albeit in different ways) and ultimately both partys will/have suffer(ed) for it.

CW is right. The judiciary must remain independent. But, since U.S. Attorneys are part of the Executive Branch and serve at the pleasure of the president, I don't see how it applies.

I also love the claim that no one is above the law. Three words: Yes they are. Not you and I CW, but court decisions, jury verdicts, and prosecutors' discretion prove that some are.

I do not give a rip about the cat fights going on with Obama, Rush, Rove, Pelosi, Hannity-
Even Cramer on Mad Money has me scared about my money.
Why in the hell do we not hear, day after day, minute after minute, full concentration of the economy-what went wrong. I am at the point I do not care so much about who but what went wrong so we can prevent more collapse. I care much more for my family than I care about the reporting on who hates who.
Politics as usual.

Judy, the real failure regarding Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac lies with the SEC, which did not adequately investigate those two companies, and the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight, which also failed in its mission.

Basically, the fox was guarding the henhouse. We need better, more stringent regulation of all the financial industry to keep this current economic debacle from happening again.

Vinny   March 4th, 2009 10:39 pm ET

How can Karl Rove be on sunday talk shows while he is the true genious Criminal in American History. How?

Jan Illinois   March 4th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

I hope we all get to watch the caged bird sing, I hope he sings a tune so sweet that we all get to hear just how unjust the entire Bush administration was. Prosecution for all that lied about the Iraq war that cost us 4000 plus brave soldiers and billions of dollars, will be music to these ears for sure.

Intrigued   March 4th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

- Both Miers and Rove should be sent to GITMO. They are a combative TERRORISTS!!! Their cell keys should be melted down and made into a chain and place around Bush's Press Secretary Ari Fleicher's NECK!!!

But according to your side, nobody should be sent to gitmo because of all the human rights violations, and that would be cruel and inhumane punishment, hypocrite.

Len   March 4th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

Judy from PA – It's true, but the democrats had to find some way to install Obama. Remember, things were looking good for McCain till the financial debacle began. But the liberals can't believe truth; it's just beyond their ability

It's about time. No one is above the law. If any of us ignored a subponea to testify to Congress, we'd be in jail for contempt in a heartbeat. So it's about time Rove and Miers did the right thing and obeyed the law.

Of course, the cynic in me has to wonder how times we'll hear "I don't remember" the same way the former Atty General couldn't remember anything when he testified.

There is alot of Bush bashing on this blog. For the record, I did not vote for Bush and did not agree with most of what he did. But I am willing to admit that once in awhile the guy was right. Can you bloggers please search Sept 11, 2003, when Bush asked Congress to investigate Fannie and Freddie and asked for more bank regulation. Guess who shot it down?? Barney Frank and the Dems. I am so tired of hearing about the mess that Bush left us with. I can only wonder what type of financial situation we would be in right now if the banks were dealt with in 2003 when Bush wanted to deal with them.

Jack from West Virginia   March 4th, 2009 9:13 pm ET

Ok where is this going? What we are going to see taxpayers money spent investigating this over a long period of time and in the end nothing will happen, point in fact Bill Clinton. Have to admit Carl is pretty well connected and I don't believe he will be the fall guy for anyone.

Tom   March 4th, 2009 9:13 pm ET

How about The Commander-in-Boob said Profit and earning ratios?

If there were illegal firings and political pressure put on people to have these people fired, then bring all those who are responsible to justice. Rove and his ilk belong behind bars if that is the case. I never like the man in the first place but that doesn't mean he is guilty of anything, unless proven otherwise. Bush and his coharts may have done things that Americans do not approve of. It should not matter if you are a Democrat or Republican. Breaking the law is a criminal offense and all those who have done so need to be punished, including Bush himself.

Mike   March 4th, 2009 7:47 pm ET

Karl Rove is responsible for the GOP being in ruins by getting Bush in office. The Architect of the GOP's Destruction should answer to Republicans first.

AT LAST!!!   March 4th, 2009 7:47 pm ET

Well Mr Rove ....are you going to appear on Fox News Tonight!!!

texasgreenacres   March 4th, 2009 7:46 pm ET

FINALLY! lost the bush to hide behind?

ib   March 4th, 2009 7:43 pm ET

This is nothing but a witch hunt and should be stopped. In this case Bush did not do anything any other president hasn't done. There are a lot more important things that need to be addressed right now. It's over; let it rest.

dr ted baehr   March 4th, 2009 7:43 pm ET

rove is such a criminal. putting him before congress will make his guilt evident and probably get him indicted.

Dee   March 4th, 2009 7:42 pm ET

Let the high-tech lynchings begin!

Scott   March 4th, 2009 7:42 pm ET

I'm glad to see no one is above the law. This is a good start. This isn't even close to the end.

big papa   March 4th, 2009 7:41 pm ET

Reckoning day...

Snake eyes   March 4th, 2009 7:39 pm ET

"AGREED TO FACE QUESTIONS"???

OH AND THAT SUBPOENA WAS JUST OPTIONAL EH KARL?

Moving Forward!   March 4th, 2009 7:39 pm ET

I guess Karl Rove is NOT ABOVE THE LAW!! While I would like him to sing real loud, I also wonder what good it will do now that Bush, Cheney and their friends are out of office. I guess better late then never uh?

Charlotte   March 4th, 2009 7:39 pm ET

I imagine there will be alot of taking the 5th flying around during these testimonies.

Thomas   March 4th, 2009 7:35 pm ET

About Time !

Machiavelli, Baton Rouge, LA   March 4th, 2009 7:34 pm ET

Another waste of taxpayer dollars. Everyone knows that nothing will come of this questioning of Rove and Miers. They will be evasive and duplicitous in their answers because these politicians like to play games of semantics that has turned national politics into a cheap Picaso throwback.

Harry   March 4th, 2009 7:33 pm ET

It's about time. Isn't it. I would like to see this figure head locked up!

radicalcentrist   March 4th, 2009 7:31 pm ET

...so there MUST be a God if turd blossom is getting his day in court sans 'Executive Privilige'. It's nice to know the court system wasnt completely 'fixed' under GWB..nice try though, huh?

Alice Newman Center Harbor NH   March 4th, 2009 7:30 pm ET

Congress may have Rove/Harriet bodies but I doubt their willingness to testify: bet they take "the 5th" before the first question is asked ... as in their names ...

Marydoe   March 4th, 2009 7:30 pm ET

It's about time. In fact, it's more than past due. Stay tuned for this one...

Chas   March 4th, 2009 7:28 pm ET

And how many times will each invoke the 5th Amendment ?

bill   March 4th, 2009 7:28 pm ET

If you think that Rove and Miers will tell the truth, even under oath, I have some swampland that I need to sell.

Dexter Skagway   March 4th, 2009 7:28 pm ET

White man will speak with forked tongue.

GODZILLA1   March 4th, 2009 7:24 pm ET

Get ready for the 5th Amendment!

Gorbashov - Long Beach, Ca.   March 4th, 2009 7:21 pm ET

Please!!

Matt   March 4th, 2009 7:20 pm ET

It's Wednesday so that means it is party time for Barack at the White house tonight. I wonder what is being served tonight? More $100 steak and all the free booze you want. Maybe another conga line. Keep it up Barack and we will crucify you for this.

Joanna   March 4th, 2009 7:20 pm ET

i say fry them all. the irony of all this is that bush set this country up for fascism, but the GOP is accusing obama as a fascist. Where was there outrage than? Obama is running a transparent admin for which we have never ever seen. He is involving everyone in our nations challenges. Bush was secretive sneaky, a fear monger who prayed on our vulnerability, than to top it off he broke dozens of laws. yep, thats irony for ya.

supporter   March 4th, 2009 7:19 pm ET

Here come the SMOKE and MIRRORS. Rove well smile and say he knows nothing and that willbe considered an acceptable answer.

Strange how Obama is being held to much higher standars of openess than Bush. Try as he might Obama can't make the government traqnsparent enough but Bush wasa all about secrets and DARK corners where truth was hidden from public view.

Minnesotan   March 4th, 2009 7:19 pm ET

Rove and Meiers don't get any 'privilege.' Their 'privilege' was to play with the rest of the crooks and pocket as much of the money as they could. Now, it's time to pay the piper for their misdeeds, which I'm sure will earn both a fair stint in prison.

Barack Of Batesville In   March 4th, 2009 7:18 pm ET

Keep using that first letter, the one that tells you to blame the man in office before you. We are not tired of that yet

Rhino   March 4th, 2009 7:17 pm ET

Finaly! Convict and throw away the key!

Jamie   March 4th, 2009 7:17 pm ET

Yay! about time these criminals are made accountable.
I bet they thought this day would never come (I sure didn't)

Rove vs. Rhamn   March 4th, 2009 7:16 pm ET

Maybe it is just me, but imagine a pointed hat on his chrome dome and he would be a dead ringer for the Travelocity gnome.

Gorbashov - Long Beach, Ca.   March 4th, 2009 7:15 pm ET

Forget depositions!

Get them in front of the committee and grill these criminal bastards!

Richard L   March 4th, 2009 7:14 pm ET

Hopefully, this is just the beginning for a long prison term.

Oh cool. I've seen this part on "Law an Order" just as they are about to nail the slime-ball he offers a better slime-ball higher up the criminal chain. There are not too many higher up than this one. Go for it!!!!!

SGJ   March 4th, 2009 7:10 pm ET

After 8 years it'll be sweet to see that weaselly worm squirm. Hopefully he'll turn and we can see Cheney sweating a little or atleast getting poorer as he defends himself!!!

HouseDiva   March 4th, 2009 7:10 pm ET

I don't know where you people get the idea that people who are losing their homes due to foreclosure are going to get government money to stay in their homes....it's a lie.

even though these people lost their homes they are STILL required by law to pay for their lost houses even if the government pays the banks for taking back the mortgages

foreclosed homes will be paid back in DOUBLE! it's the BIGGEST RIPOFF EVER!!!

and all you people who claim to pay your mortgages on time...you are NOT i repeat NOT bailing your foreclosed neighbors they already lost their homes....so quit believing the media lies...the mortgage crisis was PLANNED and placing the blame on the American people instead of the bankers and corrupt politicians was planned as well. they would rather you turn on your poor neighbor than turn on the real culprits in Washington...how stupid...selfish...and blind America has become.

simmy   March 4th, 2009 7:10 pm ET

An appearance whose time has come. Bush won't cover your butts this time. Tell the truth or end up like Libbey.

Art in Las Vegas   March 4th, 2009 7:09 pm ET

Gary   March 4th, 2009 7:03 pm ET

Will Rush the Gush be there to hold his Hand?

dennisk   March 4th, 2009 7:03 pm ET

"Significantly limited"? Why? These people have zero executive privilege, zero claims of immunity. Get them in–even if you have to arrest them–and turn up the heat. It's about time we started digging into the heaping, stinking pile of dung that is the remnant of the Bush Administration.

DeeDee   March 4th, 2009 6:59 pm ET

Don't expect cooperation let alone truths from these ttwo. True and faithful Republicans.

abc   March 4th, 2009 6:58 pm ET

and this was a SMALL government? conservative in what way?

YOO SAID PRESIDENT WAS ABOVE THE LAW   March 4th, 2009 6:56 pm ET

This probably falls under the Yoo memo stating that the then President Bush was in so many words above the law because he was the president and that the war crimes committed were not war crimes. So Mr. Rove probably felt what is good the the goose is good for the gander. People the Bush administration did what ever they wanted and now the Repubs have a problem with the current Administration. What a bunch of hyprocrits.

Dan   March 4th, 2009 6:55 pm ET

While it may be personally satisfying to many to see Rove squirm under official scrutiny, the real value of this investigation will be to achieve a permanent depoliticization of the Justice Department. We need a fundamental structural change that will make this sort of thing less likely in the future.

justin   March 4th, 2009 6:54 pm ET

Your can run but you can't hide Rove. Especially with that huge brain of yours. Not that you have a bulbous head or anything. I am just saying, I don't want you to borrow any of my sweaters.

Susan   March 4th, 2009 6:52 pm ET

itorial "Mad Max's Justice Department"

IMAGINE A PLACE where soldiers are entitled to burst through doors without warrants and citizens can be locked away without trial. Imagine that the leader of this place has the power to silence dissenters and the press and has the right to keep duly elected legislators from having a voice in these matters. Imagine further that he can unilaterally rip up and disregard any treaty he dislikes and that he has been told he is on solid legal ground by a hand-picked circle of advisers.

This is not some lawless Third World country or dusty fictional outback from a sci-fi movie but the United States of America, as described in a series of newly released Justice Department memos from the early years of the Bush administration,

From the Washington Post

shoegazer   March 4th, 2009 6:50 pm ET

Karl Rove should be in jail,no question about it.

EC   March 4th, 2009 6:50 pm ET

Both Miers and Rove should be sent to GITMO. They are a combative TERRORISTS!!! Their cell keys should be melted down and made into a chain and place around Bush's Press Secretary Ari Fleicher's NECK!!!

S.M.R.   March 4th, 2009 6:48 pm ET

Take them down and set an example on how not to abuse power. Bush and Cheney come to mind for some reason. hmmm

Rove is not in prison yet? He must be very street-smart guy!

demo in PA   March 4th, 2009 6:39 pm ET

JUST PUT HIM AND HER IN JAIL

Mari   March 4th, 2009 6:36 pm ET

Rove, Miers, Cheney, Bush........ etc., should all be dragged before a Grand Jury, and tried for crimes against the Constitution & Humanity!

howie   March 4th, 2009 6:34 pm ET

At last we are going to hear the reasons for the dismissal. Perhaps we can now move on. I predict nothing will ever come out of this but a lot of wasted time and money. Being a former federal manager, i am sure they will provide justification for the dismissal. At least the democrats will be satisfied that Rove is finally talking. I really get tired of hearing about it. Lets move on because there are larger fish to fry.

Scott L   March 4th, 2009 6:32 pm ET

Who cares? Geithner just backed tax increases on the wealthy. This slimeball doesn't even pay his own taxes!

Obama and his merry band of Democratic thieves!

Susan   March 4th, 2009 6:32 pm ET

Does anyone really think they'll finally show up, or tell the truth if they do?

Angi's Mom   March 4th, 2009 6:31 pm ET

Be ready to count the "I don't recall" responses.

Harry   March 4th, 2009 6:28 pm ET

They didn't ask Rush what they should do?

Agnes   March 4th, 2009 6:27 pm ET

Good. Let's get the truth about the Bush lies.

Darko   March 4th, 2009 6:23 pm ET

Earth to Leahy...there's been policital influence in the Justice Dept. since it was created!

Check out how many J.Reno fired when Clinton took office. Makes Bush look like a nice fellow.

Howard   March 4th, 2009 6:18 pm ET

Isn"t it funny how the republications are speaking out so loud about the Rush issue. Helps to keep the public's attention away from true corruption.

dumbocrat alert   March 4th, 2009 6:15 pm ET

this is a good step forward. Maybe they can convince the justice department to file charges against Conyers, Barney, Dodd Schummer and Reid for corruption and bribes.

Big Ed   March 4th, 2009 6:14 pm ET

LOCK 'EM UP! They ignored subpoenas! Put 'em under oath, then lock 'em up!

JonDie   March 4th, 2009 6:13 pm ET

They both belong in prison.

C W   March 4th, 2009 6:12 pm ET

This is an extremely important investigation – our judiciary needs to be absolutely independent. And it must be reiterated that no one – not even Karl Rove and Harriet Miers – are above the law.

Arthur   March 4th, 2009 6:09 pm ET

Sounds alot like Halderman, Erlichman and Watergate to me. Some just seem to think they are above the laws of the people of our great nation.

G.R.   March 4th, 2009 6:07 pm ET

Finally, we may get some truth. The days of refusal and "executive privilege" are OVER!

MDM   March 4th, 2009 6:07 pm ET

hope he means the fifty or so that Clinton got rid of...

GOP = Greed Over Poverty   March 4th, 2009 6:07 pm ET

I bet the rabid right and neo-con fascists are all hoping for a Rapture during the hearings for Rove and Miers!

Mike Dallas   March 4th, 2009 6:05 pm ET

The day, no days of reckoning for past sins is upon us!

Jo   March 4th, 2009 6:05 pm ET

Do they think these two will actually answer questions honestly? Or will they play the Gonzalez card and keep saying I don't recall/remember/have recollection. I wouldn't trust either of them as far as I could throw them.

Jon in CA   March 4th, 2009 5:59 pm ET

Great... maybe these TRUTH SEEKING NON-PARTISANS will call Hillary Clinton to ask how FBI files ended up in her private White House Quarters years ago??

Or maybe they could find out EXACTLY how much foreign contributions funneled into Obama's campaign fund??

Oh wait!! They only are interested in asking Bush appointees questions....

arithmetic is liberal   March 4th, 2009 5:59 pm ET
