WASHINGTON (CNN) – Senate and House Democratic leaders had what two sources describe as an extremely heated meeting Thursday night about the spending bill.
Once Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid figured out he did not have the votes to pass it, he and Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin went to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office to propose passing a five day resolution to keep the government running, and come back to the $410 billion spending bill next week.
The two Democratic sources say Pelosi reacted with “anger,” arguing that Democrats should instead adopt a “scorched earth” strategy and simply fund the government at last year’s levels through the end of the year. Her point, according to the sources, was that even though Republicans have been slamming the bill as wasteful spending, many of them really have an interest in seeing it passed. This would call their bluff.
One of the sources says Reid and Durbin pushed back, saying the bill increases funding for a lot of Democratic priorities slashed by President Bush, and that it was worth another try. At the end of the tense meeting, Senate Democrats prevailed.
This meeting was first reported by the Politico.

At CPAC, the de facto leader of the Republican Party, Glorious Leader Rush Limbaugh, as much as said bi-partisanship was dead. The conservative crowd cheered. So I say, fine, let's play that way. Hold their feet to the fire, Nancy. The Republicans can get on board, or sit on their hands until 2012. Skrew 'em.
It sounds like I call your 410 Billion and raise you 410 Billion and I"ve got a wild card, and you don't strategy .
Yeah, bluffing for the the sake of what, or whom? She wants to just revert to last year's bloated budget, and continue the path set for the last month and a half. "Who can bankrupt the country quicker?" should be a new hour-long Faux, er FOX game show where only past-and-present congressmen/senators and presidents are allowed to play. Winners get pork, private jets, junkets, golf trips to Scotland, campaign contributions, and the opportunity to re-write history. Losers will be scorned, laughed at, ridiculed, and mocked. Yeah, that sounds about right. The good 'ol USA. We elect great sheepherders.
let's call a bluff allright! but it will be pelosi's because all she has is bluff – what a fool!!!!!!!!
They are all bums, Dems and Repubs, but Pelosi and Reid are the worst. Pelosi, Reid, Frank and Dodd, should be thrown in jail.
Now you know who screwed Bush Congress!!!
Sure Rick, only Republicans live by the "my way or no way" credo... Thine ignorance is laughable.
Everyone blames the Republicans...
But the FACT is that Democratic Senators are against the bill.
Democratic Senators have killed the vote.
Some Democratic Senators have come out against the bill and shown
that they have a backbone.
Wasteful Spending is ALWAYS wasteful spending. Whether Rep. or a
Dem.
Republicans need to redefine themselves instead of just seating back and critizing. They don't even have a leader except Rush and for anyone to see him as a leader tells a lot. Some comments here are clearly from indoctrinated non-thinking Rush listeners. There's still 3 years and 9 months...deal with it!!!
I keep noticing Republican and"Conservative" comments about socialism and Obama. Remember it was these "conservatives" people who were planning on using our soldiers to search, commandeer here in our own country(socialism), unwarranted wire tapping of our conversations(socialism),attacking another country on rumors and lies(socialism),no bid contracts to their friends,(socialism), hiding how much they were really spending(socialism)., political firings of Federal Attorneys (socialism) . The list is endless. All this was accomplished by those who are no more Patriots or so called devout Christians than are the Taliban. They have brought this great nation to its knees in despair, shame and financial ruin. So until their admirers can come up with an original idea to help this country and all its people. Shut the Hell up!!!!!
The party in power always seems to forgot why they got elected. In 1994, the GOP was swept into Congress on the contract for America and new ideas counter to Clinton; then they forgot to perform and got fat and happy. In 2006, the Dems were swept into power based on change and anti-Bush feelings around the country. Not even 3 full years into power and the Dems in Congress are already falling apart.
The GOP survived with a stronghold in Congress for 6 years while Clinton was President and, most Americans would agree, it was a good 6 years for the country. The Dems survived the first 2 years from 06-08 while Bush was President as a counter-voice to him. This really highlights that checks and balances do work and when you have one party in control of everything, it becomes out of whack.
Texas Teacher......
It is DEMOCRAT SENATORS that have come out against the bill.
The old stick in the mud Reid has lost control of his party as has little
Nancy Pelosi. She is more worried about getting pictures with Brad.
Nancy is finally and publicly showing her frustrations with the weak-kneed Harry Reid. If the 'Cons want a fight over the bill then let them follow through with a proper fillibuster. Bring out the cots and let the criminal Repug thugs demonstrate their hatred for the poor people of America.
Pelosi has only ever cared about her own power. California needs to jerk her butt straight out of the house – no re-election for you!
Nancy Pelosi is not a consensus-maker or a leader. She is a political bully in lipstick. She is more like a Republican than a democrat in terms of how she things the government should operate. Obama needs to take a private meeting with her and let her that she is expendable.
Lbear: It's 60 votes, not 2/3, to end a filibuster in the Senate. Get it right.
I will say that the Dems aren't showing a lot of "across the aisle" spirit, and they can hardly expect the Repubs to meet them halfway until they do. OTOH, there's always a chance the Repubs will live down to their growing reputation as the Party of No...but one never knows until they try.
She is acting like a socially-conservative Republican.
let's just wait and see what will happen when it is reintroduced. We are fighting to much and should be trying to work on making sure we stay on our knees for our President, all of Congress and anyone else who is involved.
This kind of partisan politics makes me wonder why we even have political parties. They are so often concerned about what's good for the party that they forget about what is good for the country. We should just do away with the "party" system and let each candidate for public office run on what he or she believes in with regard to what they feel is best for the country.
Opinions?
As so many have stated Pelosi is an anti Christ to the Obama agenda and a polarizing self indulging meglomaniac at the country's expense. I have not been a supporter of Obama's agenda and priorities but with someone else at the helm bi-partisanship could work and is a reality. I say let the air out of her tires, give her a broom stick and let a real bi-partisan convoy move on....I also feel that Harry and Barney should take some Tony Robbins courses on positive affirmative mindsets rather than being the puppets of the wicked witch.

These A holes need to crawl back under their rocks or under Limbaughs baggy pants and let Obama and company try to right the wrongs THEY made! It is sooo hypocritical to whine all this righteous indignation as though NO ONE remembers What THEY did in the last 8 years… I'm truly sick of them!
Go on… just keep lying to the People! But recall we voted overwhelmingly for Obama…. NOT YOU!

From Texas Teacher: Sorry, folks, I didn't mean that. I'm "just saying." And, as usual, I'm spitting up in my mouth - and I really, really like spitting up in my mouth. IT makes me feel IMPORTANT!
Let him have it Nancy. Let's buy Nancy some black leather and a whip. That will teach Harry. Nancy is a brainless bimbo and Harry is a hand wringing wimp. I am sooo proud
eehhaa!!
He's a moron. She's a moron. Just another moronic Duhmocratic meeting that when it's over costs the US taxpayer billions and billions and billions of dollars. This country is so screwed for decades to come .......
I am with Pelosi, Repugs are the one with the majority of pork in the bill, but they continue their moaning and groaning.
There is a lot of repugs on this ticker. What is Rush not on? Don't you have his fat sweaty behind to kiss up to????
With civility and bipartisanship. WTG Nancy! Remember...Democrat politics first...country second!
