WASHINGTON (CNN) – Senate and House Democratic leaders had what two sources describe as an extremely heated meeting Thursday night about the spending bill.
Once Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid figured out he did not have the votes to pass it, he and Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin went to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office to propose passing a five day resolution to keep the government running, and come back to the $410 billion spending bill next week.
The two Democratic sources say Pelosi reacted with “anger,” arguing that Democrats should instead adopt a “scorched earth” strategy and simply fund the government at last year’s levels through the end of the year. Her point, according to the sources, was that even though Republicans have been slamming the bill as wasteful spending, many of them really have an interest in seeing it passed. This would call their bluff.
One of the sources says Reid and Durbin pushed back, saying the bill increases funding for a lot of Democratic priorities slashed by President Bush, and that it was worth another try. At the end of the tense meeting, Senate Democrats prevailed.

Nancy is finally and publicly showing her frustrations with the weak-kneed Harry Reid. If the 'Cons want a fight over the bill then let them follow through with a proper fillibuster. Bring out the cots and let the criminal Repug thugs demonstrate their hatred for the poor people of America.

"call their bluff"....does Pelosi think this is a game? Evidently both the republicans and democrats think it's a game. Vote them out if they've been in office more than 2 terms. After they've been in office that length of time, they're more interested in their own special interests than they are in the general populations. TERM LIMITS for them all. We have term limits on governors and the president, why not for all the rest of the politicians. This would keep them from making a career out of their jobs....especially when their job is supposed to be to serve the people of our nation, not themselves.

Pelosi also changed procedures to stop republican congressmen from offering any amendments 3 years ago and immediately shuts down their alternative legislation. i think it's funny that democrats that hated the way republicans spent money under Bush believe that giving the democrats a chance to spend wildly is okay. if this is just last year's business, why do we let this year's congress vote on it? and if this year's congress is going to vote on it, should't they take into account the $1trillion they have already agreed to.

I'm A DEM and I don't want this bill past as it is. Their is a great number of Dems that beleive in cutting goverment spending. We also think giving a bigger tax break to small business and tax credits is a good thing. I have no problem letting the BUSH tax cuts exspire and having the same tax deduction for chairity contributions the same for all. I voted for Obama and he is doing everything he said he would do but on this bill he would have needed to VETO it for us to keep the faith.
