Congressional Dems have 'heated' meeting over spending bill

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Senate and House Democratic leaders had what two sources describe as an extremely heated meeting Thursday night about the spending bill.

Once Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid figured out he did not have the votes to pass it, he and Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin went to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office to propose passing a five day resolution to keep the government running, and come back to the $410 billion spending bill next week.

The two Democratic sources say Pelosi reacted with “anger,” arguing that Democrats should instead adopt a “scorched earth” strategy and simply fund the government at last year’s levels through the end of the year. Her point, according to the sources, was that even though Republicans have been slamming the bill as wasteful spending, many of them really have an interest in seeing it passed. This would call their bluff.

One of the sources says Reid and Durbin pushed back, saying the bill increases funding for a lot of Democratic priorities slashed by President Bush, and that it was worth another try. At the end of the tense meeting, Senate Democrats prevailed.

This meeting was first reported by the Politico.

Nancy is finally and publicly showing her frustrations with the weak-kneed Harry Reid. If the 'Cons want a fight over the bill then let them follow through with a proper fillibuster. Bring out the cots and let the criminal Repug thugs demonstrate their hatred for the poor people of America.

That would be all the "poor" that don't pay federal taxes yet get "refunds and credits" and free food and medicaid health care and and and...

"call their bluff"....does Pelosi think this is a game? Evidently both the republicans and democrats think it's a game. Vote them out if they've been in office more than 2 terms. After they've been in office that length of time, they're more interested in their own special interests than they are in the general populations. TERM LIMITS for them all. We have term limits on governors and the president, why not for all the rest of the politicians. This would keep them from making a career out of their jobs....especially when their job is supposed to be to serve the people of our nation, not themselves.

the republicans have had a scorched earth policy for 8 fricking years. I say, Go Nancy! It's about time you showed you have some balls. Now, when are you going to bring those criminals from the last administration to trial? They deserve a fair trial like all other criminals.

Isn't the article about Pelosi getting mad at Reid and Durbin? What does Obama, Bush, Rush, Repubs have to do with the topic? It's a story about Pelosi, Reid and Durbin arguing. It's amazing how people will comment on an article by bashing Obama and the Libs, or Bush/Rush and the Repubs (depending on their side), whether it has anything to do with the topic. Stupid people! Thanks to JSM63 who had the best reply to the topic.

um last time i checked DEMOCRATS are in charge of congress and have been since 2006. Only a moron blames this on republicans. before you come on here and make a fool of yourself be sure to look at who controls congress first. Dick Durbin is NOT a republican. Pelosi also changed procedures to stop republican congressmen from offering any amendments 3 years ago and immediately shuts down their alternative legislation. Get your facts straight or else be another useful idiot Please stop wasting everyone's time with your ignorance. I wonder if Pelosi thinks her democrat colleagues are "unpatriotic" now.

i think it's funny that democrats that hated the way republicans spent money under Bush believe that giving the democrats a chance to spend wildly is okay. if this is just last year's business, why do we let this year's congress vote on it? and if this year's congress is going to vote on it, should't they take into account the $1trillion they have already agreed to.

Politics is a palm-greasing game, and Obama, from the pay to play state, is no different! He continues his charade with the rhetoric of a snake charmer or, if you prefer, the lies of a used car salesman! :(

They are all power hungry, arrogant, nasty, manipulative obfuscators!

But the one with the Alinsky ideology is the dangerous one!

I'm A DEM and I don't want this bill past as it is. Their is a great number of Dems that beleive in cutting goverment spending. We also think giving a bigger tax break to small business and tax credits is a good thing. I have no problem letting the BUSH tax cuts exspire and having the same tax deduction for chairity contributions the same for all. I voted for Obama and he is doing everything he said he would do but on this bill he would have needed to VETO it for us to keep the faith.

Warthog – get a clue. socialism is about taking wealth from some and spreading it around. It does not promote competition and removes any motivation to succeed as you will just have it taken and given to someone else. Can't imagine government health care...just go to your local DMV and try and get any level of service...it stinks. You are not a customer, you are a tax payer. The same will hold true with universal health care. What a joke.

Keep sipping the Obama kool-aid and everything will be just fine. Please!

warthog...........do you know how stupid you sound. Do you know what socialism means. It is an economic policy ,This is the definition.
"Any of various theories or systems of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy."
Maybe you should read a few books.
Nancy Pelosi is without a doubt the epitome of narcisism. It is all about her and her only.
