Congressional Dems have 'heated' meeting over spending bill

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Senate and House Democratic leaders had what two sources describe as an extremely heated meeting Thursday night about the spending bill.

Once Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid figured out he did not have the votes to pass it, he and Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin went to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office to propose passing a five day resolution to keep the government running, and come back to the $410 billion spending bill next week.

The two Democratic sources say Pelosi reacted with “anger,” arguing that Democrats should instead adopt a “scorched earth” strategy and simply fund the government at last year’s levels through the end of the year. Her point, according to the sources, was that even though Republicans have been slamming the bill as wasteful spending, many of them really have an interest in seeing it passed. This would call their bluff.

One of the sources says Reid and Durbin pushed back, saying the bill increases funding for a lot of Democratic priorities slashed by President Bush, and that it was worth another try. At the end of the tense meeting, Senate Democrats prevailed.

This meeting was first reported by the Politico.

She needs a one-way ticket to California – and leave the taxpayer-paid-for plane in Washington.

However, the rest of the dems are just like her – me, me, me – get my way! And will try to get it at any cost.

This administration is wrecking our country, why can't you poor pitiful folks see it????

I think it is crazy that everyone says that it's Dem politicians against Rep politicians when actually it's the Dem public against the Rep public. We elected these people and we expect them to do what we asked them to do. Read these comments and you CLEARLY see that we as citizens can't agree on this issue so how in the world can we expect the politicians to agree? Politicians are what we are! A divided and confused group of people that can't agree on what size or type of bandage to put on the bleeding economy.

I personally like the band-aid brand with cartoon characters. It doesn't help the bleeding much but it makes you smile!

As a Democrat i feel shame in having Pelosi represent us in Washington. She has the largest carbon footprint of anyone in congress with her HUGE plane flying back and forth. She has done next to nothing to prove that she deserves to be Speaker of the House. She always has this fowl look on her face. Is this REALLY the person we want to be shown representing us and showing our ability to lead, I think not. It's time for a NEW leader of the house!

What type of of Doctor was Howard Dean? I highly doubt he was a surgeon. Why is Obama considering a politician for Surgeon General?

What everyone fails to realize is that some democrats come from conservative areas and they are afraid that they are going to be accused in the next election of what the republicans are screaming about which is taxing and spending. It's nice that there are some who are concerned and are not willing to rubber stamp everything the president put out. Under the republican run congress president Bush had a rubber stamp and look where that got us.

Quick some one go get Nancy her med's. Correct if I m wrong, but is
she not from a state that is BROKE & Sending out IOU!! I m not for
ANY ear marks no matter what party. All ear marks are "buying votes".
They should let the states keep more money and let the LOCAL elected
official's decide. I do not know about any one else but it sure is easier
and quicker to get to my state capital and there local office than
WASHINGTON DC. The local official's have to live in our neighborhoods, go to local schools, shop ect.... (most in my state are not soooo rich they so not care)

Nancy and her idiot robots ruined California and now they set their sights on the whole country. They've been in power since 2006 letting Fannie and Freddy drag the county down. Now that it's in the toilet, they say "it was the last administration" and give themselves raises, increase basic spending 8%, and created a stimulus plan that doesn't stimulate a frikin thing except generations of your kids paying higher taxes and more debt. ARE YOU BETTER OFF NOW
THAN YOU WERE IN 2006 WHEN THE DEMS TOOK OVER CONGRESS????? Remember that in 2010 when its your chance to throw the bunch out. They won on a mantra of "we're not Bush" but now they actually have to run a country. They can't even run their own party.

  12. Down With The Liberal Dictators!

As an Independent voter, I'm sick and tired of this "last eight years"
    propaganda from the Democrats.

The Democrats took control of BOTH houses of Congress two
years ago. A fact they like to overlook, or pretend it never
    happened.

Things were pretty good back in 2006, so what changed?

I'm voting to throw out all the phoney over-spenders, Republican
    and now the Democrats too!

Thank goodness we have enough Republicans to stop some of this wasteful spending. Give me a break! Socialistic society here we come.
Remember John Adams ( founding father & Constitution signer) said that the greatest danger to a free nation was to put too much power in one idividual's hands. The same can be said of out two party system.

Nancy Pelosi is the worse thing to happen to this country since Jimmy Carter. At least Jimmy was just a docile idiot while she is a brazen hothead who needs to be silenced.

I worry that the spending does not end. So far we do not see any improvements....I know it will take some time, but when enough is enough?
I do not care how you call it, something has to help, we do need to get out of this misery.

I want to thank all the morons that put this clueless man in the White House.
Only in President Obama's world can you go on TV and praise yourself for saving 25 jobs.
4.4 million jobs lost and President Obama saved 25.
Can you image what would have happen if Pres. Bush went on TV and talked about saving 25 jobs?
CNN and all the morons in the news jump up and down like a bunch of dogs waiting for President Obama to throw them a bone.
Thank you for putting someone in the White House that does not have a clue about economics.
Rome is burning and President Obama does what he does best campaigns with the teleprompter.
    Thank you!

Pelosi is still a small-town politician at heart (and skill). She senses that she is in over her head – as she was in local politics back home – and stomps her feet and threatens to hold her breath until she turns blue.

Once the big gay money that put her in office realizes that Obama and Reid have already run to the center on social issues, they'll drop her on her head fast.

With Feinstein looking like she wants out of Washington for Sacramento, there will be no place for Pelosi back home either.

And Nancy – no more face lifts for you. One more and your eyebrows will be on the back of your head.

We ALL need to be accountable for this mess we as Americans find ourselves in. We ALL need to be honest and trustworthy and that includes ALL politicians – Democrats and Republicans. The truth of the matter is no one is holding anyone accountable and until we do things will only get worse. We have all lost our way and until we find it again we do not stand a chance. We can not trust anyone anymore... Democrats, Republicans, black, white – doesn't matter. All are out only for themselves and to prove THEY are right. Truth and Honesty – for the greater good is the only way to get right and stay right.

Pelosi is nothing she does not care about this country.
All she cares about is her career, which looks like it's circling the drain. California, wake up and get someone like Reagan (even if he/she is a Democrat) to replace NUTTY NANCY!

I can't believe how many posters here think that this story is somehow related to Republicans ignorance is bliss i guess.
Check one two, is thing on? Democrats have the House and the Senate and the Presidency, they can do whatever they want. It's put up or shut up time. One poster had it right without balance things get all messed up.

It is less than 2 years until the election will put the Republicans back in the House and the Senate. This will make Obama a lame duck. This will be good for the USA.

Great job Democrats, you will lose in 2 years.

    Just a American.

Between Pelosi, Reid and the rest of the Obama kool aid drinkers, we are in trouble. I am waiting for a repeat of the French revolution to happen in America. Keep putting pressure on the few that are left standing with jobs to support all the rest, an incompetent government and everything else and just wait to see what happens. It most likely will not be very pretty.....way to go dems for giving us this zoo ! Obama, back to whatever continent you came from, Pelosi take a long walk on a bridge to nowhere and the rest of the clowns should follow. Give us back our prosperity over the past 8 years !

Too many people focus on Pelosi. She and the constituents that voted her in are a tiny minority of crazy idiots that have taken control of the country. The best thing to do is to either shame them or boycott SF (frankly all of California) until they vote her out. California is so close to bankruptcy all it needs is a little push. When people see that they can't even run their own state maybe they'll vote some smarter people into office. If you don't, you'll be supporting the bad habits of California with your tax dollars, just like you're supporting the bad habits of foreclosed homeowners with your tax dollars.
