Congressional Dems have 'heated' meeting over spending bill

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Senate and House Democratic leaders had what two sources describe as an extremely heated meeting Thursday night about the spending bill.

Once Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid figured out he did not have the votes to pass it, he and Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin went to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office to propose passing a five day resolution to keep the government running, and come back to the $410 billion spending bill next week.

The two Democratic sources say Pelosi reacted with “anger,” arguing that Democrats should instead adopt a “scorched earth” strategy and simply fund the government at last year’s levels through the end of the year. Her point, according to the sources, was that even though Republicans have been slamming the bill as wasteful spending, many of them really have an interest in seeing it passed. This would call their bluff.

One of the sources says Reid and Durbin pushed back, saying the bill increases funding for a lot of Democratic priorities slashed by President Bush, and that it was worth another try. At the end of the tense meeting, Senate Democrats prevailed.

This meeting was first reported by the Politico.

While we know that Republicans are Evil, we're being given daily doses of Stupidity by the Democrats. Can somebody please tell me why we allow such fools to run our country?

Seriously though, does any of this bickering really matter until action one way or another is taken? This is just news trying to fill a void. The internet sure has a lot of crazies, thankfully I am not one of them.

Warthog. Maybe you should pick up a dictionary, or any book on social studies because you obviously have no idea what socialism is. Socialism deals with a government's involvement in the economy as well as the providing of services for citizens (healthcare, and stuff of that nature).
What you laid out are things that an authoritarian gov't does. While it is true that you can have Socialist Authoritarianism (Stalinism) the two are not inherently related.

Have any of you that posted a comment realized your sparring with each other to defend a group of people that have no grip with reality? Their is NO difference between a Repub. or Dem! Whats wrong with everyone. The lobbists pay both sides, and both parties drink from the same money troff. They will not share power but they will share a campaign doner...

Think of every recession we have had since the gas crisis of '76... most of them are still in office (repub. and dem). Please america, vote for anyone that is not an incumbent. Most voters root for a political party like this is a sport. This is not a sport, this is real, so quit playing games and elect quailified representatives, let them stay for a short time, then vote their tails out too. Both houses of congress need term limits as the executive branch does.

i find it funny that people feel the need to post thier professions on here like it helps thier individual opinions out anymore. Those that work for a government post, and hold a clearance be it secret or higher should know better in particular. Like "military officer" for example. please be careful with your posts if you know who you are

Nancy Pelosi is an absolute moron who is doing everything in her power to kill this country. She looks out for her own interests, ie, Starkist Tuna, but is doing her best to ruin the hard working American and to kill capitalism. We will soon be a socialist country and all hell is likely to break loose. She must be voted out of office. I feel extremely bad for our kids. They are screwed.

Checks and balances, Nancy. Do you remember your grade school history? That's why we have the type of government we have, so only one party can't run roughshod over the others. Of course, now that we have a totally Democratic run House, Senate and White House, there is no doubt who will be responsible for the mess. Why doesn't Reid have the votes? The Dems control both houses. Could they be worried about their reelection?

I watched Obama in Sept speaches say he would go thru the budget line by line and eliminate items that were not needed, whether it was dem or repub pork. Also their would be no earmarks. I guess he is not going to keep this promise either.

It needs to be vetoed. Period. If the earmarks were any good they would be able to be funded on their own merits.

Pelosi is such a space case, a stupid flake and should be fired...oh, years ago!!! People like her in government is the reason we have no confidence and things are failing. Ever since the Dems took power about a year or two ago Bush could do nothing, the Dems single handedly brought the US to it's knees.

    @MarkG.
All we need to do is find and convince qualified, independent people to run for political office, and then vote for them. There is no restriction in this country to have a "two party" system. Unfortunately, we, the electorate, have not made the effort, with very few exceptions, to break out of the mentality of only voting in a Democrat or a Republican candidate into office.

Take out the Republican earmarks then stand up and say that you have reduced the bill's pork by 40 percent. That will show fiscal responsibility!

Just give Queen Pelosi enough rope and she WILL hang herself. When the voters have had enough of her power tripping, they WILL speak on election day...Just not soon enough!!

She is completely worthless to the people, but not herself!! Very selfserving
