Congressional Dems have 'heated' meeting over spending bill

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Senate and House Democratic leaders had what two sources describe as an extremely heated meeting Thursday night about the spending bill.

Once Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid figured out he did not have the votes to pass it, he and Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin went to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office to propose passing a five day resolution to keep the government running, and come back to the $410 billion spending bill next week.

The two Democratic sources say Pelosi reacted with “anger,” arguing that Democrats should instead adopt a “scorched earth” strategy and simply fund the government at last year’s levels through the end of the year. Her point, according to the sources, was that even though Republicans have been slamming the bill as wasteful spending, many of them really have an interest in seeing it passed. This would call their bluff.

One of the sources says Reid and Durbin pushed back, saying the bill increases funding for a lot of Democratic priorities slashed by President Bush, and that it was worth another try. At the end of the tense meeting, Senate Democrats prevailed.

This meeting was first reported by the Politico.

Since when is someone getting "angry" news? Oh, wait – she's a woman in a leadership position so we'd better take her down a peg and remind everyone that women are expected to be sweet as pie at all times!! Sarcasm aside, I don't particularly care for Pelosi, but when was the last time a man getting "angry" was news, if it didn't involve actual threats or violence?

I don't know the details of the case well enough to argue in favor of Pelosi or Reid .... but I do know I've been frustrated with Reid's lack of backbone in the past. Sounds like Nancy at least is sporting a pair ...

Why should we stop Pelosi and reis now. They are breaking the back of every person in this country. They will bankrupt this country also. Thoase that complain what Bush did. Well they have taken what ever he did and took it to new level. When you need a wheel barrel filled with dollarbills to buy a laof of bread you will say damm I voted Democrat. Many who write here need to look up the Weimer Republic in the 1920s and learn what happens when the dollars value keeps going down. Wake up America Obama is bad for this country

It's hilarious that alot of these Republicans are crying about how Obama isn't being bipartisan, when they were controlling everything, and we did things therir way for the better part of 6 years. I think Pelosi is just the person we need because she's strong enough not to cave under Republican pressure especially when they'll stop at nothing to get what they want. They need to kick-out Rush Limbaugh, and retract there "report card" of Obama. It's been a month, people. Relax. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Nancy Pelosi is a partisan idiot. She has never had a real job so she has no appreciation for what it means to spend money you don't have. She has never had to make a payroll or earn anything she's gotten. Why doesn't someone ask her how the U.S. is supposed to pay for all this spending. We're getting the money by selling Treasury Bonds to the Chinese. If we can't pay back that debt, the only thing left to sell them is our land. That is the direction that Obama, Pelosi and Reid are taking us. Granted, Bush started us in that direction but they are putting us on the bullet train to doom.

Glad to see someone mention term limits. Our country's government is completely broken; the only way to fix it is with term limits that mean serving in the Congress is not a lifetime job, it really is *Public Service*. Then we need laws against former members of Congress and govt. agencies from doing any kind of lobbying or work with the govt. at all for at least 15 to 20 years. And we need election financing reform. We have a term limit for presidents; why not for Congress? Some people in Congress have served as long as me (and our current President) have been alive!!!

Obama needs to remind Pelosi that he wants bi-partisanship efforts during his administration. Proposing a scorched earth strategy doesn't sound like the Princess is reaching out to the other side.

On a positive note, it looks like the earmark for the San Francisco Sewer Rat survivability research project might make it through as an earmark. Thanks Nancy. We appreciate you spending our tax dollars on this profound research. We sincerely hope that the rats, rodents, gerbils, or whatever it is thats being threatened in your District get back on their feet.

Lets get them ALL mad with a national referendum for a constitutional amendment for the line item veto AND term limits. It will do one of 2 things. They will get off their butts and do what makes sense or they will be so busy trying to save their butts they will get even less done.
One other thing that could turn this country around... VOTE EVERY INCUMBENT OUT OF OFFICE AND THEN CHANGE THEIR RULES!

WE THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA NEED TO BE PATIENT. A HUGH GLOBAL SHIP WILL NOT CHANGE IN DAYS OR 2-3 MONTHS. THIS CHANGE WILL BE GRADUAL AND WILL START TO TURN POSITIVELY IN 3-5 MONTHS. THE STIMULUS MONEY IS REQUIRED TO HIT THE PAVEMENT IN 4 MONTHS WITH THE STATES.

IF YOU BELIEVE IN MORE FREE MARKET, TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH AND COPORATIONS ALONG WITH UNREGUALTED SPENDING WITH MINIMUM TRANSPARENCY THEN VOTE REPUBLICAN. THIS IS THE MESS THE REPUBLICANS GOT US IN THE FIRST PLACE AND WILL MAKE THING SIGNIFICANTLY WORST. WE MUST TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY LIKE OBAMA IS DOING BUT THAT BIG SHIP WILL NOT CHANGE IN DAYS OR A FEW MONTHS.

BE PATIENT AND WATCH THE ECONOMY GROW. OUT OF THE LAST 4 PRESIDENTS ONLY ONE HAD A SURPLUS AND GREW 23 MILLION JOBS – CLINTON. THE OTHER THREE REPUBLICANS ALL HAD DEFICITS NOT TO MENTION BUSHES GROWTH IN OUR NATIONALDEBT OF 6 TRILLION DOLLARS. OBAMA IS PLANNING ON CUTTING THE FEDERAL BUDGET IN HALF AND WILL GET THIS ACCOMPLISHED IF YOU ARE PATIENT.

SUPPORT YOUR PRESIDENT DURING THIS CRISIS AS WE DID DURING THE 911 CRISIS.

    STAY COMMITTED AND STRONG!

WE DON'T NEED ANOTHER WHITE ELITIE RIGHT WING REPUBLICAN IN POWER.

If we loose both Reid and Pelosi, I bet the country would be 1000% better off. I am not an Obama fan, but without those two, since they really run things, perhaps we could get this country back on track. Send them both to gitmo, oops that is closing. Well, put them with the others in gitmo and see what country would be willing to take them – I would bet the terrorists would be picked before either of them, sad but true

Nancy Pelosi strikes me as the left wing Rush Limbaugh. I think she jeopardizes President Obama's agenda and it would be best if someone else were Speaker of the House.

She makes me sick. I love to see her stand there and smile that sick little smile...all the while just thinking that she has the world on a string......nevermind the fact that we are going to hell in a handbasket with her in the drivers seat. Can't wait to see how my hard earned money decorates her cabinet meeting rooms.

I LIKE Nancy Pelosi, and she has more balls than poor Harry ever will. Time to call the R's bluff...they come up with pathetically ridiculous "ideas," all for the sake of rhetoric, and we save them from themselves. They get to keep the money while claiming ideologicial purity. Fiscal conservatives, my gluteus. Go, Nanc. Call their bluff. Let them make their beds AND in 'em.
