McCain's tweet not sitting well with one newspaper

WASHINGTON (CNN) – A South Carolina newspaper isn’t too happy with what John McCain’s been Twittering.

McCain has been using the microblogging site to post a near-daily list of the “10 Porkiest projects” in the omnibus spending bill. On Wednesday, the Arizona senator posted “#6. $950,000 for a Convention Center in Myrtle Beach, SC.”

The Myrtle Beach Sun News editorialized Friday that McCain is using the site “to make congressional earmarks a political wedge issue for the Republicans” by posting such earmarks without context.

The paper wrote that “readers of McCain's Convention Center tweet are now invited to think - without the inconvenience of critical reflection - that the Myrtle Beach Convention Center project has no value.”

The editorial argued instead that the convention center project has the potential to create long-term wealth and jobs in the coastal resort city.

“The irony in all this,” the paper wrote, is that the earmark was inserted into the spending bill by one of McCain’s closest friends: South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham.

In addition to my former remarks, let me interject that I have been to the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, and they need another building. I don't know how old the present facility is, but it looks like it's been around for years. It is the main venue in that area for programs, and events of all types. It is not pork. They need to change that name. I'm sure it is another propaganda invention of the (R) party.
The "PORKIEST PROJECT" coming out of Washington these days is Sen. McOutraged. "Earmarks" or not, I see defeat in his future.

I don't have an issue with the concept of exposing the "pork" in the spending bill. But, expose it ALL. Including any earmarks for Arizona... I would bet you didn't do that, did you Mr. McCain? As usual, you pick the stuff you aren't behind, but conveniently forget to include the stuff you support. So, either list it all, or shut the heck up. Either way, I don't care what you write. That you are even able to use a computer is a miracle to me...

McCain is just pork. His bank accounts are full of pork too. His wife's pork.

Strange how Republicans don't mind the pork if it's theirs.

    In response to my critics:

Yes, people in those areas do pay taxes. I don't argue that point. But why should MY tax dollars go to helping THEIR area recover? If they want it, then they should pay for it. I will see no benefit from this. If the federal gov't wants to help pay for this then present a bill about this and vote on this alone. Don't include it as a side not to an important piece of legilslation like the budget. This kind of back room dealing needs to stop. If you don't agree then I got a proposal for you. My house needs a deck. Give me some of your money and I promise to throw a party my neighbors every Saturday so everyone in the community can enjoy it. Don't like that idea? Well that's how I feel about paying for stuff so YOU can enjoy it.

I doubt McCain said that "the Myrtle Beach Convention Center project has no value.” But perhaps he did imply that the citizens of Myrtle Beach should be paying for its construction, not, for example, those of us from Cary, NC.

What possible benefit is this proposed convention center to anyone outside of Myrtle Beach?

By not fearing to offend his good friend Lindsay, McCain's action is only more credible. The newspaper shot itself on the foot! No excuse for any pork spending.

It seems like common sense to me, but wouldn't a new Convention Center stimulate the local economy in Myrtle Beach?... creating jobs and what not

Lindsey Graham is a typical republican hypocrite. When the republicans controlled the senate they supported earmarks galore, such as the bridge to nowhere. Now that the senate is controlled by democrats, earmarks are the most corrupt practice ever. His credibility and values rank with the worst.

Thank God McCain was not elected to President. He and his cronies would have continued to ruin America as the George Bush administration did. McCain does not care about the American public, he only cares about himself, his dilapidated party, and special interests.

If he were a true American, he would support our President in solving our economic problems, instead of performing politics as usual. His strategy is nothing more than us against them, R vs D. And yes, the American public is wanting both parties to come together to solve these problems.

As a registered Republican, I will vote against any party unwilling to unite to solve our current economic problems. Shame on you, McCain!

Our Federdal Taxes should be spent on federal government business. The convention center in SC is a state matter and therefore ought to be paid for through state taxes.

By the way, former Democratic Governor, and now Senator, Evan Bayh has come out against the spending bill. Too much spending and not enough cutting. He says that government must do its job to be fiscally responsible in these tough times...and not increase the base budget of the US govt by over 3 times the rate of inflation.

We cannot tax ourselves into riches, folks. If government spending were the solution...we would be out of this mess before it started. How many Democrats argued that Bush spent money recklessly and gave us a deficit in the first place? Oh, but the solution is to spend even more money by a Democrat?

    No, spending is the solution.

You Twits! Obama has been President for 6 weeks and you're giving him grief for not having gone through the budget yet line by line. Are you all REALLY that stupid? or are you just blinded by anger? frustration? inbreeding?

Americans stop being so unbelievably moronic. Turn off Fox news and learn something. You're a disgrace to the Red, White and Blue.

Earmark is a form of corruption that the law makers made legal. It is hotly supported by those who are happy to spend other people's money.
Obama "lied" that there are NO earmarks in his budget. Well, there are 9000.

There should be NO EARMARKS in the type bill being looked at. EARMARKS are not debated or brought up during formulation of a spending bill. EARMARKS are put into a bill at the last minute to do someone a favor.
I have no problem with a lot of earmarks – just the way they are done. By spending money for a new Myrtle Beach CC a lot of jubs will be created – construction, retail, small business and service jobs. But BRING IT UP FOR DEBATE!!!!
And another thing in this process that really, really ticks me off – that Democratic Congressman from NJ – Melendez is a real piece of crap. How the voters can re-elect him is beyond understanding. HE WILL VOTE FOR THE BILL ONLY IF OBAMA STOPS TALKING ABOUT RELAXING THE EMBARGO AGAINST CUBA!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT CRAP!!!!!
Just another example of a member of Congress selling his vote for something HE WANTS – not something that will help his Country. If he is even a "Cuban American" he should know that the Embargo only hurts Cubans in Cuba. The embargo has done nothing to harm Castro and the Governmant there. All it does is prolong their agony and problems.
