Obama touts job creation from stimulus plan

President Obama says his stimulus plan will spur job creation.
President Obama says his stimulus plan will spur job creation.

(CNN) - President Obama on Friday touted the benefits of his economic recovery plan at a police cadet graduation made possible as a result of the recently passed $787 billion stimulus package.

"We've got big challenges ahead of us," Obama said at the ceremony for 25 new Columbus, Ohio police officers.

But the stimulus plan would facilitate an economic recovery, he said, in part by helping support workers in law enforcement, teaching and other public sector professions.

"Because of this plan, stories like the one we're celebrating here in Columbus will soon take place all across this nation," the president said as he announced the distribution of $2 billion in new law enforcement grants from the stimulus package.

The graduating cadets were informed at the end of January that they would be laid off because of a shortfall in the city's budget, Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman said.

Can the GOP point to 1 job they have created since Steele took over? In fact he fired the whole staff of his office. That is called hustling backwards.

Once the money starts getting to the states, we'll see jobs being saved and employers hiring again. We have to spend money to make money.

so my federal tax dollars are paying for state run police departments in Columbus, where the state iteself cant afford it. This is a state issue and not a federal issue. I dont live there, I shouldnt be paying for it. Nice move Messiah.

And in a year when the stimulus money dries up, where do the funds to pay these folks come from? Seems like a short term fix, Mr. 0bama.

Good Job Mr. President. Once you fix this mess created by Bush and the Grand Obstructionist Party, you will see them clamouring to come back and mess it up again. It's a trend that the GOP does not know how to run an economy but war. They brag about wars but could not even manage the Iraq war as we speak. Recall Clinton handed Bush a surplus and here we are today in deficit.

Nothing but grandstanding. This sounds an awful lot like "Mission Accomplished" to me..... arranged by Mayor Coleman for the benefit of Obama's liberal propoganda. Get real. 25 jobs? He could have created THOUSANDS more by now if he had instituted policies which would not have so drastically impacted the stock market and the wealth of Americans EVERYWHERE. Instead, stocks are tanking, people are hoarding what little cash they have left, and the Obama Depression grows more ominous each and every day.

I wish President Soros...uhhh I mean Obama....would realize he won and stop the campaign speeches. Every time President Soros....I mean Obama...opens his mouth or Geithner opens his mouth, the stock market and my 401K goes down

Matthew, is that all you've got? Really? And your precious shrub didn't use a telepromter? Have you ever given a speech? Get real or shut up.

Steve, let me explain to you how economics works – when people have jobs, they spend money and create tax revenue. Yes, this may only be 25 but when all of the infrastructure jobs created under this stimulus bill kick in (and the vast majority of economists say that the bill did not spend enough), more people working creates more spending which creates more tax revenue.

You two really need to stop listening to Limbaugh.

Do he ever not? Matthew, you need a teleprompter! What type of English is that? Are you Black or just Southern? Anyway, as a tax payer I am glad I can help the people of Ohio keep their police force going, and in a year when the economy is stronger because the cops have been paying taxes what looks like a short term fix will be seen as a job saver.

President Obama delivers just like he said he would. Cable TV shows, especially Morning Joe, are spreading gloom and doom about our country. They and the pundits won't even give the President a chance. This is because they are all Republicans and they want Obama to fail. All you crazy folks need to wake up and smell the coffee. What's wrong with you? Well, Obama won't fail in spite of all you stupid people hoping he does. So sit there all smug and defiant and keep on making your silly predictions. The Dems will have the last laugh!!

25 jobs in 30 days... it will only take Obama 9,589 years to keep his promise of 3.5 million new jobs!

And OF COURSE... Obama takes the credit for these police cadets but will blame Bush for all the job losses during his 1st year in office.

SORRY – YOU OWN IT NOW, BARRY! Loser!

Calm down conservatives calm down!!! Things are not going to be as bad as you predict. We all know your mad because the nation has had enough of your crap and your jealous, but don't worry. The Dems are going to clean up your mess...just like they always do. And the country will be better for it. And maybe in a few decades, when people have forgotten how bad you guys are at running the country, maybe you'll have another chance at running the country. You'll drive the country down again and we'll come back and clean it up. I have noticed the cycle.
You guys screw up the country and we fix it.

    Great !

We will need more police to arrest the many people that will be stealing food because they lost their retirement income or don’t have a job NOW. If they aren’t jailed, at least they will have free healthcare to diagnose their malnutrition…

Thanks, Mister Obama ! It’s your fault........

Great, he created 25 jobs for 1 year. then where does the money come from? This is really forward thinking. Instead of investing in businesses that can sustain jobs for the long term, his spending program pays for jobs for short term projects. What do we do next year, have another $1.75 trillion dollar deficit?

    What an idiot!!!

I hope that the stimulus package will help kick the economy in gear, but I have doubts that it can work. We need some basic rules changes on how all companies do business, and how trading is conducted.

When trying to insult, please grammar check. You should have said "does" not "do".

Has anyone that hates the stimulus bill every researched the multiplier effect?

When these 25 officers start getting a paycheck they will spend it on housing, food etc. That, in turn, will cause other people to have jobs. It is not a hard concept to grasp, but when you are too busy listening to the talking heads you have no time to do your own research.
