Obama touts job creation from stimulus plan

President Obama says his stimulus plan will spur job creation.
President Obama says his stimulus plan will spur job creation.

(CNN) - President Obama on Friday touted the benefits of his economic recovery plan at a police cadet graduation made possible as a result of the recently passed $787 billion stimulus package.

"We've got big challenges ahead of us," Obama said at the ceremony for 25 new Columbus, Ohio police officers.

But the stimulus plan would facilitate an economic recovery, he said, in part by helping support workers in law enforcement, teaching and other public sector professions.

Watch: The politics behind the unemployment figures

"Because of this plan, stories like the one we're celebrating here in Columbus will soon take place all across this nation," the president said as he announced the distribution of $2 billion in new law enforcement grants from the stimulus package.

The graduating cadets were informed at the end of January that they would be laid off because of a shortfall in the city's budget, Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman said.

There is nothing in this bill that will create a sustainable, long term job plan. Nothing at all. Read it the entire thing. It is full of either short term programs or pork. And now, we will have a higher level of people not wanting to work since the government will give vouchers out to everyone so that they can get a cable converter box for HD. They'll continue to sit at home and watch the tube.

And Dutch, yes, you have to spend money to make money, but the money needs to be spent wisely. The stimulus is full of pet projects that will create nothing. The money could have been better spent by gathering all 50 governors and have them discuss the unique needs of their states. Then you work on a funding bill that can be distributed to each individual state based on their needs. The needs of Texas are not the same as the needs of Nebraska for example.

The worst senario is that states take the stimulus, create foundations, programs etc and when the money runs out from the stimulus they will have to find a new way to fund that. In other words, tax hike. Obama has created nothing since he took office. He has continually thrown money at problems instead of taking care of the core issues. Pelosi and Reid are idiots as well as 95% of the workers in D.C. (both democrats and republicans). They bad mouth every bank, automaker, etc. for wasting money and they have been doing that forever.

Give the man a chance! You guys are the same people who wanted us to go easy on the Bush administration as we slowly swirled down the toilet into economic ruin. The least you could do is give him 1 term.

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

    @ Dutch,

Check your facts. Government spending has NEVER got any country out of a recession.

Nothing like tooting your own horn-but no real results forthcoming. Get off the campaign trail and do something more than spend OUR money!

Conservatives should move out to another country if they don't like it here... since the "liberal" agenda going to wash their face with tax cuts and etc... my wife just got a tax cut on her check..from the stimulus plan.. 100$ per month, but at least something...

Well, sounds good to me and I don't live in Columbus.

This is a good place to start. Show how and why these moves are necessary. To those who have so many negative things to say, ask those cops families how they feel about it.

Kevin, exactly what policies could he have enacted to create or save jobs today? I mean, we've been waiting for the trickle down to get to trickling since the 80's. At this rate, lowring taxes should help out the guy at the bottom of the totem pole somewhere round.....2050ish?

Pompous naysayers and nitpickers on the left, right, and in the middle are way too busy looking for things that are not perfect. The American people should know better-the President Obama is doing well and they should be thankful that he is trying to do his best in spite of your constant nitpicking and non-support. This is not mission accomplished far from it, so hold on to 2012 so you can really have something to gripe about.

He's always using a teleprompter. I'd like to see him once without one. What is he afraid of? That people will recognize that he clearly is not qualified to be president?

well haters it more jobs then that village idiot bush created for the entire 8 years he was living in the white house (he wasn't working, it was more like he was on welfare, living off American workers). 25 jobs is a start and we have to start somewhere. President Obama has only been in office 40 something days and he has done more GOOD then the village idiot did in 8 years. its sad you can't seem to give him a chance, but you gave bush 8 years , 2 terms to completely DESTROY THIS COUNTRY AND SENT THOUSANDS TO THEIR DEATH!!!!!!

Those 25 jobs were saved by the stimulus, hopefully by next year the city of Columbus will be able to keep these 25 job because the economy will have recovered enough, yes I have seen him not use a teleprompter , investing in the stock market is investing in the rich man. I for one am tired of the rich getting richer and the rest of us losing.

It is always great to hear from people that have no ideas to get us out of this mess, but insult the other person's ideas.

If you do not like the ideas, come up with something new. Tax cuts apparently do not work.

So, Kevin in Ohio, what is your idea?

  25. Well there it is

3.5 million jobs saved or created was his campaign promise? No it was 4 million jobs created. The numbers are decreasing and it's changing from created to saved, not the same thing folks. Then again, with 8.1 percent unemployment there is still over 90% employment. Guess he already saved 3.5 million jobs and will continue to do so no matter how many are actually lost.
