Obama touts job creation from stimulus plan

President Obama says his stimulus plan will spur job creation.
President Obama says his stimulus plan will spur job creation.

(CNN) - President Obama on Friday touted the benefits of his economic recovery plan at a police cadet graduation made possible as a result of the recently passed $787 billion stimulus package.

"We've got big challenges ahead of us," Obama said at the ceremony for 25 new Columbus, Ohio police officers.

But the stimulus plan would facilitate an economic recovery, he said, in part by helping support workers in law enforcement, teaching and other public sector professions.

"Because of this plan, stories like the one we're celebrating here in Columbus will soon take place all across this nation," the president said as he announced the distribution of $2 billion in new law enforcement grants from the stimulus package.

The graduating cadets were informed at the end of January that they would be laid off because of a shortfall in the city's budget, Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman said.

I learnt alot through this mans campaign. To take one step after the other and never give up even when it gets tough.

Thank God I learnt that life is a long journey you have to appreciate even the least of these!!

    That is the case here!

  4. And it grows and grows.....

Only 3,499,975 more jobs to go! I hope he doesn't plan to celebrate every time 25 jobs are saved or if he does I hope he atleast shares the $100 per pound steak he eats at the taxpayers expense.

To get well Soon GOP and the other Matthew bashers please shut up. My guess is Matthew is working and had to type the email fast and unfortunately made a mistake in his writing. He is probably not at home looking at porn and waiting for a welfare check from Obama like you morons and made a mistake. He is probably working hard so that he can make enough money to pay your welfare checks. Also Michael Steele can't create jobs kind of like Obama with the exception of all the pork and wasteful spending.(I apologize for any mispells I am in a rush and only graduated from a state college)

    @ FINALLY, who said:

"Government spending has NEVER got any country out of a recession."

Oh, really? So the New Deal accomplished nothing? WPA? CCC? My ancestors WORKED, ATE, and LIVED INDOORS because of those GOVERNMENT-CREATED job.

    @ PHINEAS:

So ... are you claiming that people who lost their jobs and can't find another don't WANT to work? 7000 applicants for 300 jobs at a recent job fair would seem to give the lie to THAT notion.

Look, folks: it took more than TWENTY-FIVE years (from the Reagan Revolution onwards ... Clinton amounted to eight years of breathing space) for the Reich Wing to CREATE this horrendous mess ... yet I see someone on here writing "OBAMA'S recession."

Didn't your Sunday School teacher teach you that lying is a SIN??!!

Are any of you complainers doing anything but complain? Anyone volunteering at their local food shelf, homeless shelter, church, school? Didn't think so.

Quit complaining about what President Obama is trying to do and get off your behinds and out in your community and do something to help those in need. You might need help someday too and then you'll realize what its like.

    Bunch of whiners, geez.

Actually, Obama's campaign promise was 5 million jobs. Of course, by stating a number of jobs "either created or saved", it becomes a number that is impossible to measure. Sort of like figuring out how many lives were saved when we dropped the bomb on Japan to bring a speedy end to WWII. But then again, it'll give the politicians yet another thing to agrue about when the next election rolls around.

Obama is only going to create low paying construction jobs and government jobs. And the funding is only short term. Government jobs do not produce anything for the economy and repaired roads and bridges are not marketable commodities. While the infrastructure and government jobs are good for those who get them, they will fall short of stimulating the economy. Obama is providing no help to business where almost all the countries jobs exist and where goods and servies are produced that actually grow the economy. This will fail and the business sector knows it which is why the stock market is in a free fall.

Wow, twenty five jobs, huh? Boy, he is just moving at lightning speed, isn't he? And the markets are just LOVING the rapidity of his actions, not to mention their relavance to what is truly needed to repair the economy. What a moron.

Great! Employers have only laid off nearly 2 million employees since Obama was nominated and they started to prepare for his taxes and government control that he is ramming through congress.

give it a rest. You think everything will miraculously be 'all better' in a couple of months? If the RIght wasn't so greedy and impatient, we wouldn't be in this mess.

Sorry your big investments aren't paying off. Maybe you can withdraw some money from one of your offshore (tax free!) accounts. That way you can continue to blame the poor for being poor. I'm sick of hearing how the Stimulus plan is 'rewarding' bad planning by homeowners. Give me a break. Like trillions going to Wall Street is a reward for the great friggin' job they've been doing.

I see how some of you operate. When Limbaugh makes a statement, you come on and repeat whatever he has said in your blog. Now there is a report by a reporter, saying that that President Obama always has his teleprompter with him. I ask you; who gives a darn, besides you, and the few small minds, that tend to allow others to regulate their mental capacities? Here's a unique thought: Why not try thinking for yourselves? Unless you have no thoughts of your own. Maybe that's why Limbaugh and the like are so popular.

Those who live mediocre lives tend to look for mediocre, insignificant things to witch about. Live and let live. To each his own. Next complaint?

Do he ever not? Matthew, you need a teleprompter! What type of English is that? Are you Black or just Southern?
As a Black southerner, I think that this comment is out of line. It's about time that everyone just stop with the whining, complaining and playing the blame game. At what point will everyone realize that we're all in this together? The bottom line is that we are all Americans and I would hope that we would all want the best for OUR country.

I can't speak for anyone else, but if it were me and I got to have a job for another year until the economy gets better, then I would be grateful.

According to Republicans, we jumped straight from the "Clinton economic panic" straight into the "Obama recession"

And they wonder why we don't trust Republicans with the responsibility of governing?

The GOP will take your house, they'll take your job, your healthcare, and your rights.

But the one thing you're guaranteed Republicans will never take is responsibility.

Okay Mr. President you saved 25 jobs. But 651,000 jobs were lost in February. I know Obama took credit for the 25 saved jobs; but, will he also take responsiblity for the lost jobs. After all he was the Prez in February. Can't blame George Bush forever!

The dems own this issue now! The stock market is down again. Lets here solutions. I don't think $13 in my check is going to buy very much now that prices are going up and we are going to be hit with an Energy Tax. CNN said that tax (it's in the stimulus) could be as much at $350 year per person. So that wipes out the $400 we save in our paychecks. This is such a joke!

    Change I CAN'T believe in!

My sons job as a special ed teacher in long beach ca was also saved by the stimulus but he lost his teacher aid which was very much needed since these kids have special needs but at least he was able to keep his job and the kids were able to keep a great teacher who loves and cares about them and these kids need him more then he needs a job because he is an adult and he will make it one way or another but these are just helpless kids, just think what kind of damage would have been done to these kids if they would have lost their teacher in the middle of the school year belive me it would have been heartbreaking.

Its been less than 100 days and he's made some head way - 25 jobs.

Let's hope there are more to be saved and created by the end of the year. Give it some time people - at they very least 100 days.

Its not a giant step, but at least its something. At least he's actually trying. What are you doing to help people save their job?

If you want proof, just look at the standard of living in European countries.

Now compare that to living in Honduras.
