Obama touts job creation from stimulus plan

President Obama says his stimulus plan will spur job creation.
President Obama says his stimulus plan will spur job creation.

(CNN) - President Obama on Friday touted the benefits of his economic recovery plan at a police cadet graduation made possible as a result of the recently passed $787 billion stimulus package.

"We've got big challenges ahead of us," Obama said at the ceremony for 25 new Columbus, Ohio police officers.

But the stimulus plan would facilitate an economic recovery, he said, in part by helping support workers in law enforcement, teaching and other public sector professions.

Watch: The politics behind the unemployment figures

"Because of this plan, stories like the one we're celebrating here in Columbus will soon take place all across this nation," the president said as he announced the distribution of $2 billion in new law enforcement grants from the stimulus package.

The graduating cadets were informed at the end of January that they would be laid off because of a shortfall in the city's budget, Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman said.

To "thefletch": The Dow tanked after Reagan was inaugurated; it tanked when Truman declared victory in Europe; it skyrocketed when the Titanic sank.

The Dow is not an accurate barometer of how well a President is doing; it just represents how a select group of companies are trading.

Nothing more, nothing less. Besides, the stock market has been falsely over-inflated for a very long time and was due for a correction.

Enough with the "Democrats are all on welfare" foolishness. Look at the actual statistics, Democrats and the Blue States tend to be the people /areas that have the highest rate of education and employment. For many, many (too many) years it has been the Blue States that have paid for the inbreeding and lack of proper education of the Red States.

Republicans get off the federal teet. We Democrats are sick of paying your bills and digging the country out of your messes.

    ENOUGH!

When is this guy going to stop campaigning and start governing? 25 jobs , wow. What an accomplishment for our new president. Reagen created 20 million jobs and he didn't have to spend $800 billion to do it. Let me ask one question. If the government is going to go $1 trillion in debt, would you rather they give $5000 to every taxpayer or give that money to states to blow in any way they please?

    hmmmm....

Barack Obama is a smart man. He is doing exactly what is necessary to change the system:

    1) break it down by doing all you can for the current system to fall apart
    2) keep touting how bad it is and we have to move quickly
    3) push your agenda while people are in a panic

The only thing he forgot was:

    1) this is the United States of America and he's starting to look like a one-term presicent to me
    2) If it can be proven that he is doing the above, I call that treason and he'll be impeached and thrown out the white house door.

    I'll be happy with #1!!!

obama doesn't know his head from his tail.....for he is so out of his league as a 'leader' that he doesn't know what he is doing from one minute to the next. all this country has seen is obama playing hopscotch from one problem to the other ..........without landing and solving a single problem. why? because he doesn't know how to solve a problem and neither do his 'committees of advisors who are greenhorns and now handling the government.'
this probably won't get posted either................why? because this is the truth and obama runs from the truth and lies about his motives. CNN is so pro obama that it cannot see his GRAVE FAULTS. Time will only tell, and pray that this madness lasts only 4 years!!! GOD SAVE THE USA........obama will NOT!!!

Tired of it: You need to read a few history books, and then go live in a developing country. If that doesn't open your eyes to how bad life could really be like, then you're a hopeless case.

Our country is facing huge challenges, but we've got the Constitution, infrastructure, a basically civil society, a manufacturing base, and the innovation of the American people. Yes, times are tough, but I'm not going to throw the towel in so easily.

I've lived in Latin America and all I can say is, suck it up, Tired of It, roll up your sleeves and start being part of the solution, instead of part of the problem!

YOU need to check YOUR facts. Government spending is the ONLY way to end a recession. Geez...Accounting 101, IDIOT!

It is amazing to watch Obama sit back and watch the markets crater in total rejection of his policies and he is out politicking. This so much reminds me of the initial Carter months. Gets elected because of a jaded population / bad economy, his personal appeal and proported intelligence. Puts forth really bad policies (under adjectives of "bold", "sweeping"). 6 months into the presidency the country is in a creater that it cannot escape for years.

    Not looking good folks.

Ok, for all of you nitwits out there, you can create a whole lot of government jobs, but you have to have people in the private sector that creates wealth to pay these people. It is as simple as that. You know what, why don't we all work for the government? Well, we can't, someone has to produce a widget (sic). There has to be risk takers. Most of the people that work for the government are people who have never held a real job, except the military. If we all were on the government dole, then there would be no money. Obama is a joke!

Former President Ronald Reagan created over 20 million good paying jobs during hid term in office by implementing the Laffer Curve methodology or also known as the Kemp/Roth tax cut. Why is it so hard to take a page from history and learn from it??

Those 25 jobs were saved by the stimulus, hopefully by next year the city of Columbus will be able to keep these 25 job because the economy will have recovered enough, yes I have seen him not use a teleprompter , investing in the stock market is investing in the rich man. I for one am tired of the rich getting richer and the rest of us losing.

Only an idiot would celebrate the 25 government jobs in Ohio when we've hit 25 year highs in unemployment. It shows Obama's priorities when he's proud we have 25 more doughnut powered, radar equipped, toll collectors when American business is failing due to his Socialist plans. I'll bet the cost of flying to Ohio and setting up this publicity stunt was higher than the wages of those 25 cops over the life of their careers. It's just another step on the long path blazed by Marx and Stalin.

An economic recovery requires strong businesses, not a strong government.

I doubt if this gets posted.

Today Obama announced he saved jobs in Columbus – the jobs he saved are all service jobs paid for by the tax payer and saved for only a year, we need to create tech and manufacturing jobs which sell products and are self sustaining. Please President Obama help create policies which help companies as IBM, Lexmark, Microsoft, GE, manufacturing companies etc keep their sites in the US and not send those jobs overseas.

The only thing this is guy is good at is making speeches. He calls for shared sacrifice. Then why is he flying air force 1 all over the country at a cost of $40,000/hour. The latest flight was to Ohio to announce that he saved 25 police jobs. That's also why he's serving pricy Waygu steak at the white house. Bush and his senate/congress spending were horrible. Obamas spending plans this far are a disaster. Just wait a couple years when raging inflation kicks in as a result of this spending spree.
His treasury secretary has the audacity to tell congress that it's important to show the world we are serious about deficit reduction. In the meantime his boss is announcing more trillions in new spending.
