Obama touts job creation from stimulus plan

President Obama says his stimulus plan will spur job creation.

President Obama says his stimulus plan will spur job creation.

(CNN) - President Obama on Friday touted the benefits of his economic recovery plan at a police cadet graduation made possible as a result of the recently passed $787 billion stimulus package.

"We've got big challenges ahead of us," Obama said at the ceremony for 25 new Columbus, Ohio police officers.

But the stimulus plan would facilitate an economic recovery, he said, in part by helping support workers in law enforcement, teaching and other public sector professions.

Watch: The politics behind the unemployment figures

"Because of this plan, stories like the one we're celebrating here in Columbus will soon take place all across this nation," the president said as he announced the distribution of $2 billion in new law enforcement grants from the stimulus package.

The graduating cadets were informed at the end of January that they would be laid off because of a shortfall in the city's budget, Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman said.

Floyd in NY – I know that the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) is left/liberal leaning, HOWEVER they use data provided by the Congressional Budget Office, the U.S. Census Bureau, and the Government Accountability Office among others, and their reports are well considered so far. So take a look at what they have to say about 'Reaganomics', check their data and analysis and then try to say anything positive about the 'Reaganomics'. Just FYI, the Laffer curve is not efficient on any conditions, check the CBO's 'Analyzing the Economic and Budgetary Effects of a 10 Percent Cut in Income Tax Rates' paper for more information.

  3. But wait, there's more

Actually, I believe Obama's job creation total has reached 85.
There were 60 people who started working on an obscure bridge out in the Missouri countryside, too.

What Obama failed to mention is that funding for these jobs from the stimulus plan stops after 1 year.

President Obama has been in office less than 90 days–that is the problem with the American public they want quick fixes–if you all have the answers and/or solutions run for President. It's easy to sit at home in front of your computer and spit out your opinion.

Ask the Republicans with NO solutions this question: How many jobs were created by George W Bush and the Republicans. I'll wait for a legitimate answer...

    Still waiting...

25 jobs that are funded for 1 year... then what? Can you see why some governors are reluctant to take the money?

They give you money this year and you're supposed to continue the funding for the future. That's just asking for a budget crisis.

    $800,000,000,000 divided by 25 jobs = $32,000,000,000 per job.

Will Obama the Logo President be photo-oping each new job or hire?

If the stimulus created/saved those jobs.where will the money come from next year for them to keep those jobs? Are they temp jobs or will the good people of Ohio see a tax increase, or better yet will that burden fall on the hole country?

You people are crazy. He really could walk on water and you guys would ask you is that creating jobs. I'd be willing to bet that you guy also laughed when he suggested that getting regular tune ups and inflating tires would save folks gas.

Get over yourselves, give up the rhetoric and just wait and see.

Idiot Republicans and their proposition of tax cuts, they just don't get it (which explains why the party continues to be in utter disarray). How is a tax cut going to help the man or woman who doesn't have a job and has no taxable income to begin with!? With a tax increase on the big business fat cats who make too much anyway, at least money is actually going into the economy; but what can you expect from the uneducated party of 'no'?

President praised the fact that 25 jobs were saved today. What I understand they save those policemen's jobs for one year, what happens a year from now? More needs to be done to help everyones job, not for just one year though!

Bush always leave a place better then when you found it. You got to the white house with a surplus and left with a bill. That is like hustling backwards. What is wrong with you?

    March 6, 2009 04:52 pm at 4:52 pm |

That is 25 more than the repubs have created!

President Obama is at least doing something unlike the repub "leaders" which are sitting in a corner and pouting and randomly shouting "tax breaks for the rich" and "ShamWows for everyone"!

Therefore, proving repubs are useless except as shills!

Democrats like to play the blame game citing the past as an excuse for their present actions. The stimulus will only create a larger budget for the future as the infrastructure jobs will only be temporary. Those jobs will only last while the work does, resulting in unemployment or additional spending to keep them employed. Not to mention, most of the money will disappear due to inefficiency and corruption at the local level. It's only human nature to steal, it takes an effort not to.
