WASHINGTON (CNN) - A leading contender to serve as the top deputy to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is no longer under consideration for the post, as 17 top jobs at the department remain unfilled in the middle of the financial crisis.
Annette Nazareth, a former top official at the Securities and Exchange Commission, was being considered for the prestigious post of Deputy Treasury Secretary but is no longer in the running, according to an official familiar with the matter.
While Nazareth was never formally nominated for the job, she did have interviews for the post and a background search was being conducted. But the official stressed that this "was not a vetting issue," such as the tax matters that tripped up nominees such as Tom Daschle and Nancy Killefer.
Nevertheless, the development could be a blow to Geithner as he struggles to deal with the financial crisis at a time when 17 top jobs beneath him remain unfilled at the mammoth agency.

Wasn't the SEC chewed out for no oversight? Not what we need more of. Good riddance.
I am shocked that everyone expects these posts to be filled in 46 days. We have become such a "fast food" generation that we expect a drive thru window for everything. I wish all the complaining from talking heads, wall street and main srreet would STOP. If you don't have a solution don't make matters worst by being part of the problem. I'm stratirn to agree with Phil Gramm we have become a nation of whiners. We have complaining down to an art form how about turning that negative energy to something positive, change doesn't begin with the president but with each of us.
Geithner is such a fool. How Obama appointed him is beyond me.
It must be hard to find dedicated socialist communist muslims to fill these jobs?
Posters on here are idiots.
Les, your pointy white hat is showing
Tom is right. There's something very unsettling about all of this and I wish someone with some investigative credentials would get to the bottom of it. Come on CNN, that means you.
The GOP has no staff in the Steele trap office and they are worried about a 17 post in the Treasury? At least the Treasury is functioning. The GOP is in the process of turning into 2 parties each equally worthless.
To Mustang Allie- If Obama the Clown, what was Bush?
Obama pulls the skeletons out of the closet...Bush and his crew hide in the closet. So what you're saying is it's okay to be a crook as long as you are a Republican Crook. Right?
Tax Cheat Tim needs all the help he can get before he further runs our economy into the ground. Fill those jobs!!!!
@ Mustang Allie.
If you are so unhappy about what the current President is doing then do us all a favor and move to another country where I'm sure all your cares and concerns will be taken into consideration. No wait, you won't be a citizen there so your voice most likely won't be heard. Oh well, you can keep putting all the blame on the current administration for STEPPING into this mess, you can keep telling our President to keep his dumb mouth shut while he's trying to preserve what's left of the US economy. You can keep placing all the blame on democrats when republicans are the hatemongering idiots that put us into this predicament. Since you are so smart why don't you come up with a plan to get America back on track so you can save your own IRA instead of sitting back and doing nothing except complaining about those trying to rectify this huge screw up the past republican administration left. How about you just shut your dumb mouth before we have to hear anymore idiocy coming from it?
GOP Melt Down in full bloom: Last week it was finance chair Tim Chapman, and now the man in charge of all on-line operations has left — without any immediate prospects!
If she can't stand the rules and regulations that this new President is enforciing then yes bow out now and save your face. That is certainly her lost but she would make it more easy for everyone to understand that this was not a tax issue maybe a man issue. Just tell us the truth Nazareth, everyone that bite the dust usually have an exciting story to tell the American people, so what is yours?
Constant Obama bashing with short memories, remember Clinton and Bush; they, also, had problems with their cabinet members.
The smart people are getting as far away from this crowd as possible.
Call the IRS and start the audit.
After two months, words out that no one wants to be a part of this Administration. It's ok, Barack knows enough crooked politicians here in Illinois to fill any remaining posts in Washington. In fact, I expect soon we can be calling D.C. "little Chicago".
What does this have to do with Obama. We only want to see great stories about Obama.

But this is going to be a new era in Washington....Change....Change you can believe in!
Let me guess, she actually pays her taxes, so she's not eligible for the position. Well, that's the administration you voted for, America.
For the record I have no party affiliation what so ever. I agree with both parties in different areas. But I am tired of everyone saying that it's just the Democrats that have the tax problems. Yes, lately it's been mainly the Democrats, I'm sure that if you went through the Republicans you would have equal the amount of issues for taxes. It's not a Repub or Dem thing, it's a dirty politician thing and it needs to stop. It never will, but atleast we can try.
