WASHINGTON (CNN) – Sixty-one at 50. President Barack Obama is halfway through his first 100 days in office and he's still enjoying a honeymoon with the American public, according to an average of recent polls.
Obama's job approval rating stands at 61 percent in a new CNN poll of polls, which averaged seven national surveys all conducted over the past two weeks.
"Obama's support is not as high as it was during the transition period and immediately after the inauguration, but approval from six in ten Americans is a pretty robust level of support," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.
The 61 percent approval rating is also slightly higher than his predecessors' numbers around the same time. George W. Bush stood at 58 percent around 50 days into his administration, with Bill Clinton at 53 percent, George H.W. Bush at 56 percent and Ronald Reagan at 60 percent.
With the country mired in a severe recession, the overwhelming issue for Americans is obviously the economy. But while the stock markets don't seem to have much confidence in Obama, the polls suggest Americans do.
"Patience is wearing thin in Washington and on Wall Street, where people are demanding a quick turnaround. But the public is much more patient," says CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider. "Americans think the recession is likely to last two years or more and at the moment they have confidence in the president's ability to turn things around."
So far the vast majority of people don't blame Obama for the recession. And three out of four people questioned in a recent CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll had confidence that the president would make the right economic decisions to help the country escape the recession.
That's much higher than the 30 percent who had confidence in Wall Street to make the right calls when it comes to the economy. It's also higher than the 53 percent who had confidence that Congressional Republicans would make the right economic decisions.
"The real test for Obama and the Democrats won't come until the midterm elections in 2010," adds Holland. "By then it is likely that Americans will think Obama is responsible for the condition of the economy at that time.
"But even if the economy remains in poor shape, the GOP will need an economic plan of their own to convince voters that they could do a better job than the Democrats."
@ Unhappy American
Right, because whenever something that is done in a scientific manner provides results that you don't like, you shoudl immediately resort to accusations of conspiratorial ulterior motives. I mean, wouldn't it be grand if scientists stopped measuring the temperature only on warm days or if species would cut it out and stop adapting to their environments to evolve?
I posted this before anyone else and am still waiting for moderation. Nothing inflammatory like some of the others I see, so what gives? Here it is again...
Wow! I've just watched aprox 50 point increase in the DOW in the last 3 hours! I guess this means President Obama's should get the blame for this also. Wait for it, wait for it, the Republicans are going to say that it's because they're doing something right……..
The American people are smart enough to realize that we did not get into this overnight but they do realize Obama has made it ten times worse and infinently harder to recover from in just 50 days.
"Honey moon" is exactly what this is. His disapproval numbers are climbing FAST and while it is easy to get a poll to say whatever you want it to say, the truth is, there is not a single American who understands the situation who still supports the Presidents course of action.
President Obama's plans are with out thought or care. It's like the amuture hour at the White House.
Thank God Reagan had the forsight and thought to lower taxes, deregulate industry and let the American people win. "Government cannot fix the problem, Government IS the problem."
"while the stock markets don't seem to have much confidence in Obama," you write. This is a piece of Republican propganda that I'm surprised CNN is so eager to swallow and repeat. The stock market's poor performance is caused by the credit crisis, which will not be affected by the President's policies for many months. Really, you don't have to dumb things down to these absurd talking points.
In a nation where more and more are depending on welfare and handouts, this is not surprising.
Everyone but Republicans realize that it will take more than two months to turn this country around. President Obama is doing better than McCain could ever have imagined. And now here comes his daughter..........................
Pac contributions made through 2008
Building Trade Unions: $16,052,104
91% to Dems / 9% to Repubs
Industrial Unions: $12,383,936
98% to Dems / 2% to Repubs
Misc Unions: $6,805,441
97% to Dems / 3% to Repubs
Public Sector Unions: $16,332,578

So of course the Unions will get what they paid for!
Hey Holland the GOP has a plan its called cutting taxes vs. Obama's tax and spend. Bobby Jindal spelled it all out in 10 min. while was on the air where were you.
@ Tk1, who said "B.S. this is a poll of about 1200 people why dont you pol the entire united states, we are ready for a divorce!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
We already did poll th eentire US...on November 4, 2008. The sooner you people stop pretending that happened, the better off all of us will be.
We elected him and we will support him. The guy was dealt with something none us has ever seen in our life time and he's handling it with grace. What else can you ask of a leader like Obama? God bless him as we continue to lift him up in our prayers.
Not this American!!!!!
"Stock markets don't seem to have much confidence in Obama." What, pray tell, do stock markets have confidence in?
Response to Taxpayer 101
I work, pay taxes, don't get government handouts and I have alot of confidence in President Obama. I shudder to think we might have John McCain or worse yet, Sarah Palin in charge. Our current president is intelligent, thoughtful and is a president for all people, not just the rich and the big oil companies. It will take time but he will get things turned around.
You probably live in a red state, grew up bigoted and ignorant.
God Bless our President!
The Republicans are in trouble.
Conservatives and Republicans prove day in and day out on these boards that reading is not the strong point of their ideals, nor are there ideals viable based on fact and reality.
The majority of the comments that disagree with 'this poll's" Inaccurate findings are laughable. Why? Because this is an average of a conglomerate of polls, INCLUDING fox news. I guess its ALL liberally biased eh?
"CNN poll of polls, which averaged seven national surveys all conducted over the past two weeks."
It's sad that details, in general are simply too much for republicans and conservatives mired in ideology rather then reality. I feel sorry for your loss. From evolution, science, and our countries progression, if it does not suit the ditto head ideology, all they have is "No!" and "Not true!"
PJP – I was the first one to post my response that agrees with you but CNN chose not to put it on display! They seem to not want dissention shown to their messiah, do they? I said in mine that there is no one that I know that likes or approves of the way Obama has been handling ANYTHING! But CNN wants to be partisan and not post responses from people that to NOT agree with the great one.
Does this mean that if 3 years from now Obama still has a high approval rating, he would still be on a Honeymoon. Is there no circumstance under which he could be enjoying majority support because he's doing a good job?
Complete confidence in Obama. Face it people, this dog of an economy didn't start the day he took office. It takes a while to turn a huge ship like the U.S. economy.
Btw, does he get blamed for the positive gain in the DOW today too?
Who did you poll, I have not spoke to one person who is happy with the president. Everyone I know hopes his policies fail. I'm so sick of everyone saying give the president time you shouldnt want him to fail, etc...These are the same people sending death threats to George W. Bush and hoping he fails, but yet when a lefty gets in its, how could you go againist our president you racist. Give me a break it makes me want to puke.
"Thank God Reagan had the forsight and thought to lower taxes, deregulate industry and let the American people win."
Hey Jake, read your history. Reagan sure did raise taxes, and more than once. Get your facts straight, dude.
I think President Obama is doing a fine job so far :-).
The stock market has been dropping for over a year now. This was caused by decades of deregulation and very high risk behaviors which were allowed by the deregulation. Obama has been President for less than two months and it's somehow his fault? That makes absolutely no sense at all. Maybe you and others around you should stop listening to folks like Limbaugh and do some reading instead.
BTW, I am a hard-working American taxpayers that doesn't get hand-outs from the Government. I am more than a little angry at what's happened to my 401K but I don't blame Obama for it. I also feel pretty lucky to still have my job. For many of the unemployed, the sky has indeed fallen.
