(CNN) - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid expressed confidence Tuesday that the Senate would be able to pass an overdue bill that includes hundreds of billions of dollars in spending and thousands of earmarks - pet projects of lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.
Reid postponed the vote last week because he wasn't sure if he had enough votes.
"This has taken far too long on this piece of legislation. I hope that we can move on to other things with a little more cooperation from the Republicans," Reid said Tuesday. "It just seems that they're just saying no to everything."
Reid said getting the 60 votes needed to end debate on the $410 billion spending bill is "certainly doable."
"Then we'll look and see if we can get enough votes to pass it. I certainly think we can," he said.
Democrats will need at least some Republican support in order to move ahead with the bill.
But if the Senate changes the current bill, the House would have to take it up again, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has warned that if that happens, she'll scrap the bill - sending funding back to current levels, with no money for new programs, and eliminating all of the earmarks.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday called the bill a "missed opportunity."
Updated 3:18 p.m.
The House added a pay freeze amendment to the Omnibus Bill on
2-25-09 for the 2010 Budget. This bill is only for the last half of the 2008-09 budget. They don't need to change it. Just freeze it now. Stop playing games and twisting the reality of what is going on. The Senate is the problem not the House. Remember, these people have to support two households. Their home district and one in DC. They really do not make that much money if you consider that.
PLEASE....HOW DARN THEY WANT TO ALLOW AN AUTOMATIC RAISE IN PAY AND PEOPLE ARE LOOSING JOB LEFT AND RIGHT!!!! Why don't Reid and Pelosi follow the President example and freeze their pay!!!
The average pay for a congressional representative is $170,000. This is just the pay they receive from the government, it doesn't include any bribes or lobbied funds from special interest groups they receive. The pay for senators can be even higher, often times well over $500,000 per year. Washington DC isn't that expensive to require such a high rate of pay. If the American people are forced to do with less due to the economy, why should the government be any different?
@Ghost that was awesome "GTFOH" I agree if they can't afford to live in DC then move where they can. Just because they work on the HILL does not mean we taxpayers will pay to let them live "HIGH ON THE HILL". @pcolman it is Bi-weekly and I will take $20 to $30 a month it will pay 1/2 tank of gas, buy milk, bread eggs so stop minimizing after all it could be $20 to $30 less a month.
With regards to EARMARKS, the majority of them are from the REPUBS
So what exactly is the threat - removing pork from the spending bill if the Senate wants any compromise? What is wrong with that? By the way - Obama 2.0 - the president doesn't "have to sign" the bill. He does have the power of veto. If you actually used it, while standing behind one (and the only one, so far) of his campaign promises, some people in this country might start to respect him. Of course, since he is just the mouthpiece of the DNC, he will sign whatever they send him.
NO RAISE For NONE of them Especially Republicans they have DONE NOTHING! TO HELP THIS ECONOMY
You far right wing nuts is looking for any thing to be so obstructed on any thing. Congress have all ready stop their raise for 2010. You far right wing nuts just want to pay politic and nothing else. You nuts making your comments no increase in pay are just trying to stir up trouble becasue everyone desired a pay raise exspecailly and these time so stop your whinning.
Those who voted for Bush twice are the reason we are in such a mess. He gave away the surplus he inherited from Clinton, has us in two wars, gave a tax cut to the wealthy, and, of course, destroyed our economy. He also became the biggest socialist with his 'don't ask, don't tell' where the money went in the bailout
You have to take some responsibilty for the mess if you are an adult.
If you actually read the article, it said they already put in that they would receive no pay raise in 2010.
And, I have no idea why everyone is cursing Nancy Pelosi. She said she would scrap the increases and earmarks in the bill and leave funding at current levels for the remainder of the year, i.e. LOWER than in the bill. Isn't that a good thing? Isn't that exactly what people are screaming that they should do?
Is this any different than the corporate honchos getting a huge bonus for ruining their companies?
No more raises for politicians until the people are taken care of first . . . did they become an elected official for money or to help the country?
Let's step back and analyze why Nancy has her job. I'm just guessing that the Democrats wanted someone speaking for the group that represented a very liberal voice, that could speak harshly and with candor during George W. Bush's time in office. Bush is gone now, and the Democrats now have to deal with the Frankenstein they helped create. It is now their problem and not our problem and they now have to deal with a situation gone bad.
I suggest they put their heads together and fire her and get on with the business of the people.
Looks like agreement in this although, I don't know why anyone would say they have been doing a good job lately (Brian Crooks@). They haven't done anything to help the country as whole since 2005, just the special interest groups like ACORN and the unions.
So just becasue some people don't have jobs that mean every body should not get a paid raise. I get an automatic 3 percent raise very year and I am not going to give it back. Raises are a part of your job package so get over it.
MANY PEOPLE ARE ANGRY, THAT CONGRESS, GETS AN AUTOMATIC PAY INCREASE, IF THE EVEN HAVE A JOB, THEY WOULDN'T GET THAT
