Envoy to oversee closing of GITMO

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Two senior administration officials confirm that Daniel Fried will be named a special envoy to oversee the closing of the Guantanamo Bay prison.

Fried is currently assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs. The new job is intended to underscore the administration’s seriousness in shutting down the facility. Fried is a veteran diplomat who worked under former President George W. Bush. His main job will be to negotiate transferring Guantanamo detainees to third countries, mainly in Europe.

If you want to win the hearts and minds of Cubans – give over all of their stolen land that GITMO resides on.
This is the first step to healing wounds between nations, anywhere in the world.

Oh great. These fools are closing down Gitmo after it has been proven that more than 60 former Gitmo inmates have gone back into terrorist activities. Obama is more concerned with the rights of terrorists than his own American citizens. Disgraceful

Send them to Saudi Arabia where they can be properly beheaded.

The closing of Gitmo will anger Bush Republicans and false Christians, because the facility goes against American Principals and Christian morals.

True patriots, Rep, Dem, and otherwise, will hail this as part of the return to American values.

Now the world waits for Obama to progressively define the new consequences of supporting terrorism..

Jeff in Illinois is correct about returning to American values on the closing of Gitmo. The problem is: where do you safely put these terrorists? For all of its faults, Gitmo was isolated by the water, and the prisoners were not mingled with a general prison population. The terrorists may not be safe in a US prison. What a mess....

As space opens at Gitmo, perhaps we can send Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, Rangel, Kerry and Frank there.

But of course.., as the Supreme Court just ruled, Bush was constitutionally right to hold these noncombantants indefinitely without charge..

I said close that shamefull prison now. Trial all this detainee in the court of law, put the guilty one in maximum security prisons here or in other countries, release the innocent (don't care if they go back to al queda or the taliban).
Ask european leaders to help fight the extremist talibans unwilling to help boost al queda and follow al quaeda where ever they go until they become irrelevant or until Bin laden is killed or captured.
Ask pakistan regim to help secure their nucs and provide millitary troops to help confine alquaeda in the mountains.

Noah and April – we are sending them to your houses.

...or we could do something radical like, oh, I dont know, trying them in a court of law?

It never ceases to amaze me how many Americans are willing to betray our way of life and ideals for the false sense of safety.

Let me ask you this, knuckleheads; how did the detainees being in Gitmo make the pastor in Illinois or the 10 shooting victims in Alabama any safer? Don't you get it? We are all going to die anyway. Get over your fear and stop selling out your souls.

@ Phoenix 86............... WHY??? What have Pelosi, etc., done????

Let's be HONEST and get the REAL CRIMINALS in there:

Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld, Paulsen, Madoff, Rove, Mier, etc.!

Just because YOU disagree with Pelosi & Co., does not make them criminals....... on the other hand.........

BUSH TORTURED & LIED. Bush & Cheney both, who swore to protect, uphold and defend our Constitution totally disregarded it when they sanctioned SPYING on American Citizens!

Bush & Cheney CAN NOT travel abroad, because any one of our European Allies can and would ARREST them for WAR CRIMES!

SO....... yes close down Guatanamo, bring justice to the prisoners; investigate why they are there. Some are not terrorists they just happened to be at the wrong place and the wrong time!

People forget that what makes our Nation GREAT is our system of JUSTICE! Bush & Co., made a mockery of our Nation's laws and values!

I wonder if any of the places they end up in Europe or Asia will aloow them access toi a Quaran like we did at GITMO. Those of you who think their rights were violated are full of crap.

Oh yeah this is just great. They will probably go to Mexico cross our border and we will put them on unemployment benefits and pay for them to damage us from within! What a joke, it is a known fact these people dont care about hurting America. But you bleeding heart libs beg to shut it down so they can rejoin there buddies and continue to cause pain and suffering to the US and our troops. This is a proven fact as many released have already went back to the same old tricks. It is a major problem I agree but trying to beg other countries to take them is a joke why would they want them. They will agree and then just let them run out the back door.

The liberals will be blaming the gop some how for the next terrorist attack even though they target any defensive measures this country tried to develop in the terrorism fight.

Thankfully most of them live in NY!!

Most liberals would support leaving Gitmo open if they could just let the terrorists go free and fill it back up with Americans who have views and beliefs that are conservative.

Since it is obvious now that liberals cannot ever debate a conservative, other than making childish lib insults, they wish to silence us by any means possible.

Conservatives find terrorists who want to kill people to be our enemy, liberals find their fellow Americans who disagree with them politically to be theirs. Face it, the aveage liberal Democrat would choose to have Limabugh killed before Bin Laden, that's an undeniable fact.

I've come to realize the majority of people who comment here are simply either NOT American, or poorly educated. Which, if you are poorly educated, for the sake of this country go back to school and learn a thing or two about common sense and rationality.

Those clowns in GITMO were involved in 9-11...Killing them is what they want. They are really proud of themselves for what they did. I don't know what our government has done to these people in the past that we are not aware of, but it's sad for the innocent

  21. Nonsensical Liberal

Finally, a return to REAL American values like releasing our enemies so they can return to their terrorizing and killing!

Shame on Bush and Republicans, they should keep GITMO open so THEY can be TORTURED, because their actions are a hundred times worse than a terrorist that plans bombings that destroy the lives of innocent people! Strapping bomb vests onto mentally retarded women and detonating them in the middle of a crowded market is NOTHING compared to BUSH! Recruiting children as suicide bombers or human shields is child's play compared to BUSH! Maybe if BUSH only kidnapped innocent people and beheaded them in front of a camera he might deserve his freedom!

I hope Obama can find a SAFE home for these poor terrorists.

PS: I am completely insane AKA Liberal

Released terroists or suspected terroists will probably return to their business of terrorism, just as so many times convicted felons return to crime when they are released. I don't have an answer – just an observation, but somehow I think we need to figure out what gives them the desire to do what they do and change that. What do we do to reform people in our prisons so they return to be useful and full citizens – and there are success stories. We change the person one at a time.

Obama releases Gito detainees to third parties washing his hands of terrorists. Meanwhile...., The Taliban's new top operations officer in southern Afghanistan had been a prisoner at the Guantanamo Bay detention center, the latest example of a freed detainee who took a militant leadership role.

How many more people will Obama let these captured terrorists kill??

Noah March 11th, 2009 10:55 am ET : Convenient memory you have, it was the Bush administration that released the former prisoners. The detainees at Gitmo have been held against their will for years without formal charges. While not all detainees are innocent as new born babies, what right do we have to kidnap anyone, and take them to a foreign country against their will? How would you like to be swept up from your life, taken to a foreign country, told you're guest while having a gun and torture everyday? Would that be enough to turn you into something you were not previously? Why do you think Bush choose Gitmo to house the detainees? It wasn't because of the sunshine, he was probably informed if they set foot on American soil they would be subject to our laws and rights, one of which is a speedy trial, which is hard to do without evidence, even circumstantial evidence. No one has said these men are free, they are being handed over to authorities to be jailed. I think these men will surely wish they were back in Gitmo than the less than cushy confines of a foreign prison. Americans have to practice what we preach, we cannot expect to violate the right of others and expect to have our soldiers treated with kid gloves when captured.
