WASHINGTON (CNN) - Two senior administration officials confirm that Daniel Fried will be named a special envoy to oversee the closing of the Guantanamo Bay prison.
Fried is currently assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs. The new job is intended to underscore the administration’s seriousness in shutting down the facility. Fried is a veteran diplomat who worked under former President George W. Bush. His main job will be to negotiate transferring Guantanamo detainees to third countries, mainly in Europe.
Such vitriol from posters.....pathetic to say the least....there won't be a conclusive answer to this problem....the current administration will hold a middle-ground position until either a new administration is formed or the homeland is o'er trod.....
I am not a Bush hater nor Obama hater..so don't think I have an agenda here like most people. For all these people that think Obama is going to bring change is crazy. I honestly believe he wants to make change (good ones) however when he actually learns what the REAL siutation is.....he then can understand why it was put in place. He wanted out of Iraq right away...aint happening. With Gitmo, he is closing it, but why it hasn't it been close right away?? Cause all of these terrorists go back to where thy came from..ie..new talibn chief. With the spending bill, I feel Obama really wanted no earmarks. However, in real politics, you have to give certain things for votes. This whole change thing was a myth. Like I metioned before, I think Obama wanted to atually change the way it was. But he is playing in the big boy world. It's the same stoy people, it' just he a Democrat.
We need to keep Gitmo open...
...for the right wing conservative confederate Bush-loving, Obama-hating racist TRAITORS in THIS country...
And by all means lets put all of the prisoners in our already overcrowded prison system! Just what we need, more ethnic groups to form more gangs! Thats the ticket!........NOT!!!!!!!!
The war on terror is an ideological war. Whoever abandons theirs first loses. I don't see the terrorists waivering...why should we? What you people don't get is that Bush lost us the war the minute he threw everything we stand for as a country and a people out the window. Are we such pu-es and so unsure of our fundamental beliefs in human rights, equality, decency, freedom, etc., that the first sign of something to fear comes along our spines melt or are we proud enough, strong enough and possessed of sufficient integrity to stand by what we believe in the face of such threats? That was the test we failed. We cannot afford to fail it again.
I am delighted that GITMO is closing. It's a stain on America that it ever existed. Innocent people rotted years of their lives away in that hell hole and then were released without apology. When the American government pays Iraqis and others to hand over terrorists, innocent people are bound to suffer. As for the guilty, they have been so tortured for so long that it is impossible for their trials to have any meaning in the civilized world. If Nuremberg worked for trying the Nazis, I do not see why something similar could not have worked for the terrorists. By ignoring international laws and our own code of ethics, we severely damaged our standing in the world.
