(CNN) – Actor Chuck Norris has his eyes on the presidency, but not the White House. Norris wrote that he would be interested in becoming the president of Texas, if the state were ever to secede from the Union.
“I may run for president of Texas,” Norris wrote Monday in a column posted at WorldNetDaily. “That need may be a reality sooner than we think. If not me, someone someday may again be running for president of the Lone Star state, if the state of the union continues to turn into the enemy of the state.”
The actor claimed “thousands of cell groups will be united around the country in solidarity over the concerns for our nation” and said that if states decide to secede from the union, that Texas would lead the way.
“Anyone who has been around Texas for any length of time knows exactly what we'd do if the going got rough in America,” Norris wrote.
“Let there be no doubt about that.” Norris was a strong supporter of Mike Huckabee’s presidential bid, and he helped to draw attention to the former Arkansas governor’s campaign.

Contrary to what many Texans believe, Texas did NOT retain the right to secede when it became a state. That's old "wives tale".
Interestingly though, Texas can divide into as many as five states which could affect the balance of power in the Senate. [BTW: Texas didn't retain the right to fly their flag at the same level as the US Flag either. That's old "wives tale" too. Other states just choose not to.]

Secession is not illegal. It is actually a protected right in the consitution. Our four fathers "seceeded" from England. Any state has a legal write to seceed. The only thing the Civil War proved is that the country could be held together through military force.

Regardless of whether any State decides to secede, one thing we should all agree upon is that the 10th amendment calls for Federal and State governments to share power, and that any issue not designated as a Federal issue in the Constitution is up to the States.
If the Federal government would start respecting States' rights, there wouldn't even be any talk of secession. Why should those red state and blue state voters constantly fight each other? Respecting States' rights eliminates this problem.

What most of you guys commenting might not realize is that unlike the confederacy, Texas was its own country circa 1850 and when it joined the U.S. as a state it retained the right to secede from the union in its consitution. I'm not sure exactly how it would work in reality, though.

I think it would be a smart idea to leave the Union, Texas is well off on its own, and we have enough resources to survive. Texas is the only state that entered the union with a treaty between independent Republics. It may legally secede. I doubt the USA would go to war over it especially if the treaty were upheld by the supreme court which does tend to interpret contracts and treaties literally.

As a real Christian who studies the Holy Bible let me warn those of you who will be left behind after the rapture of true believers (not any particular church or denomination) who put their faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and live their lives according to His word – Mr. Norris is the type of people who will be running everything when we Christians are no longer here to make any sense of what is going on. Mr. Norris is what the Bible calls a zealot – people who lived during the time that Jesus Christ lived and betrayed Him because He said He would not bring God's Kingdom to earth at that time. They take God's words and twist them to mean something different than what God intended for them to mean. We do not prepare the Kingdom and present it to Jesus when He returns – Jesus brings the Kingdom with Him when He returns to this earth to rule and reign because the Kingdom of God exists in the hearts and minds of those who believe in God, put their faith in Jesus Christ and live their lives in obedience to Him. After the rapture Christians will be taken into Heaven and will return with Jesus as His Kingdom. I encourage all to read and study a good and reliable translation of The Holy Bible – The Authorized King James Bible is a very good one. I recommend reading The Gospel of John in The New Testament first because the main theme is about how much God loves mankind and His free gift of salvation for all who choose to believe.

Actually Mr "Accountability" the U.S. Constitution is silent on the issue of the secession of a state from the union. Only one obscure and controversial Supreme Court ruling in 1869 (Texas vs. White) establishes any margin of precedence on the subject. This was after the civil war brought seceding states back into the union by military force.
The bottom line is this: what Mr. Norris proposes has not been thoroughly tested in an impartial court of law. As long as he does not take up arms against the USA nor advocate its overthrow, there is no federal law preventing him (or anyone else for that matter) from seeking a popular referendum on secession.
It is also held by Texas vs. White (though not stated explicitly in the Constitution) that a majority of the other 49 states would have to agree to the secession. This is the key area of controversy in the 1869 ruling.
I have lost all respect for this guy. As far as I'm concerned, he's a traitor, terrorist, and total nutcase all wrapped in one.

This was a condition of the original admission into the Union, as the Republic of Texas was an independent nation. There is NO provision for leaving the US and the Supreme Court has made that amply clear since the War of Northern Aggression in the 1860s. Now, on the other hand, if Texas were to become a separate nation again, it would supplant France as a dominant financial and industrial power. Wouldn't that bust their buttons?
The idea of splitting Texas into five entities with a total of 10 US Senators has made the rounds of every session of the Texas legislature as long as I have been watching them, but no one seems to take this as a serious idea. If Texas seceded, it would become a third world country pretty soon. Most of the southern states (for all their bluster) take more from the federal than they give back in the form of taxes. Chucky can be pres, Rush can be VP, they can name Ann Coulter Secretary (not of anything, just Secretary), and Eric Cantor can be Chief Spokeswhiner. They can form a strategic alliance with Alaska when Todd Palin finally convinces Sarah to secede, and trade their oil back and forth. As Americans I feel we have the duty to work out our issues like responsible educated adults. We may not always agree. But just because you may not agree with some issue does not give you the right to succeed. It like a child playing a game. If they start to lose they just quit instead of seeing through the issue. When I first read this I felt sad and scared. Sometimes our leaders aren't great, but I'm sure they try their best. I am a democrat, and voted for Obama. However, if McCain won I would stand by him and his decissions as president. Neither McCain or Obama (to my knowledge) ever mentioned about splitting off any part of the united states. Its been argued over for a long time from what I am reading now but the constitution clearly reads that individual states are to govern their own people with its on laws. The bailout plan took out e-verify, which means that it can give jobs to illegals since they will not be verifying if they are citizens or not. Healthcare, is that for AMERICANS or illegals? If it is for illegals, they will come at an even faster rate and it will no longer cover Americans. Obama wants us to pay our taxes but how many people that he wanted for his cabinet have not paid their taxes. Folks, there is something terribly wrong with Washington right now. And the only entities who have the means to really change things are the states. It only takes the legislatures of 34 states to either dissolve the union or abolish and reform the Central Government. Remember, the Federal Government was formed by the States to serve the States, not the other way around... For this very reason, there's a lot of us down here who don't hold that SOB Lincoln in high regard, nor that SOB Bush... (As a Texan, I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to my fellow Americans for the short comings of our former Governor).
I wouldn't mind seeing a few states leave the union if it would demonstrate to the rest of the States and the Central Government the seriousness of the problem and that the people (as in "We The People") were taking it upon ourselves to fix it (which is our GOD GIVEN RIGHT to do as affirmed in the Declaration of Independence). Maybe then, the Fed will pull its head out. Advocating secession is not treason so long as you remain loyal to your state and you do not engage in warfare on the United States until after your state has seceded – this is why very few Confederates were prosecuted for treason.
Personally, I'd rather have Ron Paul as the President of Texas, better yet, as President of the CSA or USA (whichever the people of the States decide).
