First lady Michelle Obama met with members of the military Thursday in North Carolina.

(CNN) – Michelle Obama toured the Fort Bragg military base Thursday in North Carolina in her first official out-of-state trip since her husband took office.

Greeted with cheers and applause, the first lady posed for pictures and chatted with soldiers and civilians in the Iron Mike dining room, before meeting for a private lunch with military families and base volunteers.

Watch: First lady in the limelight

Support of issues facing military families is a platform Mrs. Obama supported during her husband's presidential campaign and has continued through her role as first lady.

Obama will travel to neighboring Fayetteville later in the day, speaking at the city's Arts Council to recognize community organizations providing assistance to families of military members.

Finally, someone is paying attention and bringing the plight of the brave soldiers to the forefront of America. Right on Michelle. Keep up the good work!!!

SuRy   March 12th, 2009 9:01 pm ET

"Never one to miss an opportunity for a photo op. Makes me want to throw up when I even see this radical far left socialist pretending to care for the military or this country!"

Right, our soldiers and their brave families received nothing but the best care under Bush. Insufficient body protection, insufficient vehicle protection, electrified showers, fecal contaminated food and water, sordid conditions in the military hospitals, families left without moms or dads for years at a time, etc... I bet our brave men and women long for more Bush, Cheney and their no-bid friends. That must be why the active military abroad supported Obama over McCain 6 to 1!

Hey libs…

if a soldier throws a boot at Michelle – will you all support that soldier getting a medal or ribbon? Just checking your "hypocrisy-meter" as so many of you liberals praise the reporter in Iraq throwing his shoe at Bush.

=========================================================

What is it exactly that you are trying to say?
First of all, Michelle Obama is the First Lady. She has class, style, beauty, and brains.
Second of all, Bush deserved that shoe from a person in the country he destroyed.
Thirdly, get a life and stop being so miserable and hateful.

Obama 2012
Michelle Obama 2016
Bush had neither of these qualities.

Deb in Colorado   March 12th, 2009 8:44 pm ET

I am always amazed that the haters on the Right are so quick to say that the Dems don't support the military and are not patriotic, etc. Did anyone question Palin about her association with a party that wants to secede from the US? No, because she is a "real" American, unlike us treasonous liberals who just want our country to be better than it has been the last few years. Look at that great Repub icon Chuck Norris who wants Texas to secede and he'll be its President. Quit throwing bricks and take part in fixing the mess we are in – regardless of who is at fault. It is VERY easy to criticize when you aren't the one with the responsibility to fix the problem. Find a solution and stop finding fault.

louise   March 12th, 2009 8:30 pm ET

Its so refreshing to have these two wonderfully smart, talented hard working sensible people trying to make America what it used to be. I'm so proud of them, even if I do still have to listen to the haters make stupid comments..........Keep up the good hard work Barack and Michelle, REAL AMERICANS ARE PROUD AND HOPEFUL........

Lynn   March 12th, 2009 8:25 pm ET

Based on a lot of these comments, I am not proud of my country.

Why are some people still harping on that? It happened last year, probably almost a year ago. Can you not find another Michelle Obama "flaw" or "mistake" to over emphasize? If one misunderstood statement uttered months ago is the best you've got on her, you have nothing.

Be a part of the solution, not the problem.

If you have read any of previous posts you will have read that I have stated over and over again am a conservative. I have challenged BOTH sides to be a little more civil. A losing battle so far! As far as Palin and her family., I am a Palin fan and the nasty comments from the left is how they express their fear of a prominent conservative female! And you are correct, I have never done that! I hope now you are clear!

It is utterly disgusting to this proud veteran that an America-hating Socialist would darken the doorway of a military unit.

Obviously Conservative Texan you are spotting the daily talking points–read your history. Republicans are for the military industrial complex made up of NO BID contracting firms such as KBR. Leave it to you the troops in the trenches would get the occasional crumbs off the table.

You're an idiot! If you're looking for hypocrites, look at the GOP!

Bush spat on the Constitution, drove our economy into the ground, executed more prisoners on Death Row as Governor of Texas than in history (all the while proclaiming he's a Christian). He was nothing but swagger and words (which he couldn’t pronounce correctly half the time), bamboozling people with all his talk of country and family values… now THAT makes me want to hurl!

big papa   March 12th, 2009 7:47 pm ET

Okay moderators...

...let's try this:

...Right wing conservative America-haters...

...are so unevolved and primitive in their thinking...

...that when they see poise, intelligence and beauty...

...particularly in a Black woman...

...it SO intimidates them...

...they immediately seek to denigrate, renounce and destroy her...

...with their ugly words, and mean-spirited primal screams...

... these are the Bush-Limbaugh conservatives...

...NEVER forget who got us in this mess...

JJ Boston   March 12th, 2009 7:45 pm ET

This is refreshing! But let's not forget Mrs. laura Bush and her dedication to the less fortunate. I always respect the First ladies and their contribution to our society.

C W   March 12th, 2009 7:44 pm ET

Democrats are against the military? Are you for real? That is a completely illogical statement! I'm a lifelong Democrat and I've always been supportive of our military – perhaps because my father served 30 years in the Army.

What I have always been against is the military-industrial complex (which Eisenhower warned us all about). Those companies who defraud the taxpayers and hang our soldiers out to dry by not properly equipping them, etc. are nothing more than disgusting vultures.

Regarding Mrs. Obama's visit: I think it's wonderful! She and her husband are not just paying lip-service, they are actually doing something to help their country.

Now THAT is truly putting Country First!

@ SINGLE MOM…….. I hear you, and AGREE…….. BUT……. one would expect our Military families to be given better housing, for the Pentagon to cut back its wasteful spending and remodel the housing on the bases. What I am saying Single Mom, is that for all the "support the Troops" rhetoric of the GOP….. (they have been in charge for 8 years & 12 years in control of Congress) they do not put their money where their mouths are. Fair is fair….. IF they expect our Military families to sacrifice, then do right by them, give them decent housing at the very least.

@ Matthew in Detroit……. what else is new? You are the typical-far-right-nut……. only have vile comments and put downs. May God grant you peace, man.

@ BIG AL........ Must you ALWAYS put-down the Obamas??? Go ahead and throw-up if you must.

BIG AL...... the "socialist" thing.... been listening to Limbaugh too much??
It is typical and traditional of the FAR-RIGHT to cry "the communists are coming, the communists are coming!"

NOW....... its "the socialists are coming!" The GOP is at it again with its fear-mongering.

AND YOU KNOW WHAT BIG AL????? The CONservatives have ALWAYS called any Government program that helps Americans ...... Socialist!

Here is a list BIG AL of ALL the programs deemed Socialist by the far-right-conservative-nuts like you....

Social Security

Medicare & Medicaid

Unemployment Benefits

Welfare

Minimum wage

SCHIP- which gives healthcare to poor & working class children!

SO you see BIG AL, ALL these programs are SOCIALIST BUT........what would Americans do without say...... Social Security???
Millions of elderly, many of whom SERVED OUR NATION...... would be homeless and destitute!

I am tired of seeing my brothers & sisters in arms struggling to make ends meet because no one cares about their issues. As far as a Soldier throwing a boot at any guest on their base I would expect that Soldier's leadership to punish them appropriatly. There is no room in our ranks for such childishness. He has already said he is going to cancel (cut) weapons procurement which will cost jobs. I will reserve judgement until i hear where cuts will be made. For all these clowns talking about how the Democrats hate the military, I have a couple questions.

Who was president when Walter Reed was exposed as crumbling, full of rats and mold? Who was running for re-election when they accused a decorated Viet Nam hero of being a coward and a traitor? Which party's 2004 convention was full of people wearing little kid band-aids on their cheeks to symbolize a "tiny scratch" for a purple heart? Which President sent soldiers to die without making sure they had MRAPs and proper body armor? Which President, in the summer of 2008, threatened to VETO a new GI Bill because he was afraid the benefits were "too good" and it would hurt retention? And which party's candidate in the most recent election echoed that same sentiment?

Get off your high horse, you'll get a nose bleed up there. Support the troops by bringing them home and letting them see their families.

Nate Hussein   March 12th, 2009 5:32 pm ET

do these two have no shame–all this while her husband is cuting money to the military? what a hypocrite.

Some of you really are stuck on stupid, he just increased military spending, do some research before you make yourself look foolish.

Matthew, Detroit   March 12th, 2009 5:31 pm ET

Cutting the Raptor program.

Cutting an additional 20% from the military budget.

Not backing VA hospital.

Really dont back the military but hey take it for what it is another photo op for Michelle.

Jo   March 12th, 2009 5:30 pm ET

I never saw either Barbara or Laura go visit the soldiers or their families. All the republicans can do is send them to a war that shouldn't have been started in the first place. No matter what the president or the first lady do, the republicans would find fault with it. I never saw such poor loosers and spoiled brats in my life. The government is not all yours to run. And before you go bashing Michelle or anyone else you better clean up your own house, aka Vittner, Palin, etc.

Matthew, Detroit   March 12th, 2009 5:30 pm ET

Pretty much a joke when Michelle and Barack have such distain for the US military.

Wish her to be even more active, she has great intelligence and common sense to help administration in a few goals – like improving K-12 education, and military families.

dennisk   March 12th, 2009 5:27 pm ET

As if America wasn't lucky enough to have an intelligent, sober and responsible President, we also have a smart, dedicated and involved First Lady. What an absolute breath of fresh air! Other countries have a reason to be jealous of America again.

Sue   March 12th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

What a bunch of crap!!! She's wasting OUR $$$ flying all over the country and buying new ugly clothes to speak about something she knows NOTHING ABOUT!!! When the hell was she in the service or Mr. O? How do they know anything about these people? They used government $$$ to pay for the many, many years of taxpayer sponsored educational benefits and still don't know how to relate to the poor people who paid their way!!! Stay at home and stop spending our $$$ on your gadabouts!!!!!!

Mari March 12th, 2009 4:48 pm ET

Mari, most military housing is falling apart. This is nothing new, going back decades. It's not flashy to put money into housing or support systems. Leaders of both parties need to admit that they have seriously let our military down in every way possible – housing, support, pay, equipment, and using them as a political tool. Presidents of BOTH parties have done this. I'm not singling any out.

And for those saying a soldier would throw a boot at the First Lady, you know little to nothing about the caliber or quality of the individuals in the military. There might be a very small percentage of idiots, but that pales in comparison to the lunatics in Congress.

Susan in SC   March 12th, 2009 5:25 pm ET

@janee : "do these two have no shame–all this while her husband is cuting money to the military? what a hypocrite."

I beg to differ. President Obama has done more for the troop his less than 2 months in office than GWB did in 8 years. Obama has committed to better benefits for troops, better post-service education opportunities, etc. How Bush, Cheney, McCain & company could deny our troops better benefits just amazed me. Wasn't their reason for not wanting to increase benefits something like, "then the soldiers will not inlist again and will want to go to school." Gee, you thnk?

phoenix86   March 12th, 2009 5:25 pm ET

Hopefully she'll apologize to the troops in advance for the Vet funding about to be pulled and the body armor about to be cancelled so that her husband can fund his welfare state.

A. Darton   March 12th, 2009 5:19 pm ET

Hay Jon in CA.... Michelle Obama didn't start a war in a country who had nothing to do with 9/11.A war were we were lied into. Were over 4000 Americans soldiers were killed. Billions of dollars were spent. Where innocent Iraqies were killed. So I don't think our soldiers would have any reasons to throw any shoes at Mrs. Obama. With the mess which was left for President Obama, by you know who, I felt like throwing a shoe or two at GW myself. So proud of my First Lady.

FAYE, NV   March 12th, 2009 5:19 pm ET

Conservative Texan   March 12th, 2009 5:17 pm ET

Give me a break. The Obamas care nothing about our military. This is an attempt to make them appear that they do.

It is utterly disgusting to this proud veteran that an America-hating Socialist would darken the doorway of a military unit.

What's next? Perhaps she'll go on a roadshow with Bill Ayers touting a new G.I. Bill (something which was NOT offered to me when I served under Jimmy Carter).

I am not a "lib" but yes, I did suport that man for throwing his shoe at Bush. I wouldn't have blamed him for trying to shoot him with a gun. It wouldn't have made it right but I wouldn't have blamed him. Bush raped his country.... all with that smug look on his face. He is detestable and has put a black mark on our country for a long time to come. It happening to Michelle though..... would not make sense since she does not have innocent blood on her hands.

single mom   March 12th, 2009 5:13 pm ET

Has anyone else noticed our First Ladies tend to have more class and poise than our Presidents? Granted this is probably because, most of the time, they remain above the political idiocies their husbands have to deal with, but still... think about it.

Mike Syracuse, NY   March 12th, 2009 4:51 pm ET

@Brian Crooks, you are correct. This is nothing more than a photo op. I don't give a crap about her dress. What I do care about is that while pretending to care about military families, the Obama administration is advocating that vets pay for service related injuries with private insurance (opposed by every veterans group) and are projecting major reductions in defense spending so the military will lack the tools they need to do the job. Meanwhile he signs a spending bill with 9000 earmarks.

@ Steve "family members .....should be off limits"

So all that hate and nasty comments that Obama supporters leveled against family members of Palin, McCain, and Clinton was not OK then? I am sure YOU never did that, right?

A photo-op against the back drop of veteran complaints and the prospect of troops being sent to the other war is begging for a comment. It is a criticism and is what this country is about.

Mari   March 12th, 2009 4:48 pm ET

@ JON in CA......... you are a typical mean GOPer. I seriously doubt that a soldier would throw a boot at Michelle Obama! WHY?

Because unlike Bush....... Michelle Obama has not killed innocent civilians. Bush attacked a sovereign country!

And Michelle Obama's husband will be bringing many of our Troops home, which will make any soldier thrilled to be coming home out of harms way!

Finally, Michelle Obama is wanting to help military families that for all the "support the troops" talk from the GOP......... LIVE IN POVERTY.

Check out Base housing its as bad as the ghetto!

Steve (the real one)   March 12th, 2009 4:48 pm ET

@Independent chicago man age 25. Exactly how would you know Bush did not serve honorably? Would that be based upon that nonsensical story on CBS a few years ago? You do realize a few folks where fired over that, right? Secondly, exactly what branch of service did Obama serve in? He didn't but, he did decide to serve in other areas before he entered politics. Why can't you appreciate Bush serving in the Texas Air National Guard or is your hatred that much overwhelming?

Shooky   March 12th, 2009 4:48 pm ET

Brian Crooks   March 12th, 2009 4:40 pm ET

Hey libs…

if a soldier throws a boot at Michelle – will you all support that soldier getting a medal or ribbon? Just checking your "hypocrisy-meter" as so many of you liberals praise the reporter in Iraq throwing his shoe at Bush.

Hey Jon,

I would praise that soldier if Michelle Obama had ordered the killing of a hundred thousand or more of his countrymen and the forced homelessness of more than 2 million, and then came over for a smiling, high-fiving victory lap. Give me a break, you act like George W. Bush was some sort of innocent victim and that the Iraqi people made up the atrocities he and his Blackwater cronies committed. You should be ashamed of yourself.

If Saddam Hussein had invaded America, bombed dozens of cities and replaced our government with one he had hand-picked, then came over for a photo-op and talked about what a great job he had done and how thankful the American people were to live free, wouldn't you throw something at him?

Jasmine in Germany   March 12th, 2009 4:40 pm ET

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   March 12th, 2009 4:39 pm ET

AIRBORNE First Lady Obama.

@ John in CA

Michelle Obama hasn't invaded a country under false pretenses, tortured people, etc. No one should have a reason to do such a thing. On the other hand, your leader, " The Decider," he did those things. He's lucky it was just a moccassin and not a Timberland boot.

cnnnewser   March 12th, 2009 4:39 pm ET

No one has a reason to throw a boot at Michelle – and as far as the nitwits calling out the Libs – I would rather be a Lib than a war monger, a hate monger, a racist, or a Limbaugh follower.
The Libs need to start calling out these conservatives – the so called conservatives that constantly pick on the Libs and blams the Libs for everything.
The republicans are conservatives – they're the evil doers in the country....not the Libs.

PA Dem   March 12th, 2009 4:38 pm ET

Jon in CA,
1) The broad brush you use in "libs" is off-base. Not everyone supported the boot-throwing, liberal or otherwise.
2)The boot throwing was aimed at the president, the politial leader. Mrs. Obama holds no political office.

So, your rationale is senseless at best.

gary gpp   March 12th, 2009 4:36 pm ET

@ Jon in CA

Hypocrisy has nothing to do with it. Michelle Obama is not the one who destroyed our country.

Charlotte from Charlotte NC   March 12th, 2009 4:35 pm ET

I knew the Obama Administration would help the military family's.
These family's have been mistreated, ignored, and left on their own while their husbands, wives, and children are off fighting unnecessary wars.
It's really a crime knowing that Bush is living high and mighty on billionaire row in Dallas, playing golf, and enjoying his family and friends.
Makes me sick.

Seriously people, stop all the hate and realize that all of the attention she is giving the military families is positive. These individuals need our support and assistance and I am all for shining a bright light on them. As far as the shoe throwing, come on that was an Iraqi angry at Bush for invading his country. There are no similarities in that and Michelle Obama's visit to Fort Bragg. Just stop the hate and let's get this country back on track together.

Maryann Rose   March 12th, 2009 4:30 pm ET

Jon in CA – that is the worst straw man argument I've ever heard.

Throwing a show at a man who destroyed your country, and throwing a boot at the first lady for no reason are two completely different things. But, typical republicans cannot tell apples from oranges.

Griff? "And the takings are still down with no possible window" ???
