In a 2 1/2-hour procedure on March 4, doctors replaced the 83-year-old former first lady's aortic valve with a pig valve after determining that part of it had hardened.
Her activities will be limited for at least three weeks, after which she will be able to resume her normal activities, said surgeon Gerald Lawrie, in a written statement issued by the hospital.
"Mrs. Bush was a remarkable patient," he said. "Her recovery was very quick for this type of procedure. I expect her to be back to normal soon and resume her active life."
