Gibbs takes swipe at Cheney, 'Republican cabal'

Watch Gibbs take a swipe at Cheney.

(CNN) - White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs took a slap at Dick Cheney Monday, likening the former vice president to controversial talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh.

The comments came at the White House daily briefing, during which Gibbs dismissed Cheney's statement Sunday on CNN that several of President Obama's policies had left the country less safe.

"Well, I guess Rush Limbaugh was busy, so they trotted out the next most popular member of the Republican cabal," he said. "I would say that the president has made quite clear that keeping the American people safe and secure is the job - is the most serious job that he has each and every day.”

On CNN's State of The Union with John King Sunday, Cheney defended the Bush administration's policies on the handling of enemy combatants.

"I think those programs were absolutely essential to the success we enjoy, of being able to collect the intelligence that let us defeat all further attempts to launch attacks against the United States since 9/11," he said. "I think it's a great success story. It was done legally, it was done in accordance with our constitutional practices and principles…"

Gibbs later dialed back his comments, after being asked by a reporter if the sarcasm was the official White House "sanctioned tone" toward the vice president.

Watch: Cheney questions Obama's policies

"Some times I ask forgiveness, rather than for permission," he said. "I hope my sarcasm didn't mask the seriousness of the answer…that for seven plus years the very perpetrators that the vice president says he's concerned about weren't brought to justice."

Cheney – the guy who talks big about fighting when the truth is that he got five, count 'em, five deferments during the Vietnam conflict because he was too chicken-crap to fight in his own generation's war. He's a perfect example of modern republican manhood...a bloated windbag who hid under his mama's skirts for the first 30 years of his life. Cheney doesn't deserve to lick dog crap off the boots of anyone with balls.

I am disappointed in CNN and John King for putting Cheney on the national news. This only gives the false sense that his views are worth the air time.

@Clearly Departed Has anyone told Cheney that Bush isn't in office and instead of attacking another president's plan, he should be finding something more constructive to do with his time...

Like you know, fix the Republican party and try to get this nation back on track.

"It's those who have never served in the armed forces that don't want to see reality." I presume you are referring to draft dodgers Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney.

Well, Mr. Arnett at 5:37pm, your comment about Vice President Cheney not looking at anyone reminds me vividly of the last two years when a certain "O" we all know NEVER looks at anyone. He looks at his best friend, the teleprompter. He looks like he is watching a ping-pong match swinging his head back and forth, back and forth and never once looking at the American people through the camera lens.

I wonder how much of this anger by the left is because they were never able to defeat Bush and Cheney. 2-0 with no impeachments!
You never beat them and now you never will!

When Dicky Cheney speaks, no one should listen. He ran our country
like a dictator. Bush II only thought himself as President.
Tell Dicky boy, someone else is trying to clean up the mess his dicisions got our country into.

I think Dick Cheney is brilliant and smarter and more honest than the Obama clan. Way smarter. Cheney has the skills to run a business and act like a CEO. Obama and his liberal following are hateful, bad sports when challenged. Never seen an administration single out names they want to destroy personally. Shame on Obama and Gibbs.

We didn't have any major problems handling enemy POW's during the previous major wars. We even had POW camps scattered around the country and we abided by the Geneva Convention Agreements. Gitmo was never needed except to conceal the crimes committed by Bush and Cheney. As far as I am concerned, they should be subjected to a session of waterboarding and then see if they declare it not to be torture. Bush was a deserter during his Air National Guard days and should have been charged then. But Daddy and Grandpa managed to have the paperwork doctored and lost. Hopefully, the truth comes out during the Rather lawsuit

As an old, retired guy, I have seen many Presdients come and go. This President has inherited the worst situtation I have ever seen. For the former Vice-President to parade around making disingenuous comments is outrageous. I give Mr. Gibbs high marks for his ability to answer the most leading questions with fitting remarks."

Pipe down one cares about what you've seen.

Dick Cheney can't stand it because there is a Democrat in the White House. He needs to keep his mouth shut and let Obama undo all the damage that Cheney and Bush have done over the last eight years. There is one thing thats for sure, Dick Cheney will never admit that he made some big mistakes while in office.

Cheney is an irrelevant figure who's trying to stay in the spotlight longer than his due by spouting out equally irrelevant tirades, trying to justify himself and his legacy. The White House responded properly by not taking them seriously.
