Gibbs takes swipe at Cheney, 'Republican cabal'

Watch Gibbs take a swipe at Cheney.

(CNN) - White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs took a slap at Dick Cheney Monday, likening the former vice president to controversial talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh.

The comments came at the White House daily briefing, during which Gibbs dismissed Cheney's statement Sunday on CNN that several of President Obama's policies had left the country less safe.

"Well, I guess Rush Limbaugh was busy, so they trotted out the next most popular member of the Republican cabal," he said. "I would say that the president has made quite clear that keeping the American people safe and secure is the job - is the most serious job that he has each and every day.”

On CNN's State of The Union with John King Sunday, Cheney defended the Bush administration's policies on the handling of enemy combatants.

"I think those programs were absolutely essential to the success we enjoy, of being able to collect the intelligence that let us defeat all further attempts to launch attacks against the United States since 9/11," he said. "I think it's a great success story. It was done legally, it was done in accordance with our constitutional practices and principles…"

Gibbs later dialed back his comments, after being asked by a reporter if the sarcasm was the official White House "sanctioned tone" toward the vice president.

Watch: Cheney questions Obama's policies

"Some times I ask forgiveness, rather than for permission," he said. "I hope my sarcasm didn't mask the seriousness of the answer…that for seven plus years the very perpetrators that the vice president says he's concerned about weren't brought to justice."

Dick is SO right in his comment about 9/11!
There hasn't been a stampede of wild elephants in the US after that date either. I guess that he and W protected us from all of that too.

His comments are about as pertinent and relevant as nothing. PLEASE – no more interviews with this clown!

Too bad Cheney will take the Limbaugh comparison as a complement, as will Limbaugh.

I actually like his serious answer better than the sarcastic one.

The main difference between Cheney and Rush is that Cheney is evil, while Rush is merely stupid.

This country is sick of Cheney and Bush. With any luck, they will end up in jail. They did more to aid terrorists by starting a war with lies and oil company profits than anyone else in our history. Go back to your dark cave Mr. Cheney.

I have already said here what I think about John King. At a moment when the nation is bleeding, the fella brings up this dying hawk to give us lessons. King wanted MacBush to win but lost. It was good Blitzer continue on sunday. He at least is sometimes balanced in his bias views.

Cheney is one of the most hated Americans for good reason. It's unethical and disrespectful to undermine your successor like this. I think Dick is just trying to fasten a fig leaf over the shortcomings of the last eight years.

the long and short of it is that Cheney, along with the moron whose vice president he was, are war criminals responsible for the senseless deaths of thousands of innocent Iraqi's, Pakistani's, Afghan's–the holocaust on those countries which their policy's are responsible for, along with the senseless deaths of 4258 (as of today and continuing under the Obama administration) in the mire that is Iraq and 666 senseless deaths (as of today and, with the escalation of THAT war by Obama, most certain to continue well into the next decade–the late Buckminster Fuller once remarked..."Why is it that we always seem to elect to major offices in this couintry, those most lacking in creative thinking ability?". How true. (as an aside, I did hear that the war criminal cheney bought the moron he worked for a Kindle when they left office...a good thing, now bush can order his coloring books and comic books wirelessly from Amazon!

Cheney needs to move to Dallas, buy a mansion, and enjoy his fantastic retirement as a multi-millionaire. Right next door to his boss.
He's the biggest Chicken-Little there is, which is normal for a draft dodger. His stomach was even too weak to watch the tortures.

Rush Limbaugh talks in a hateful and mean spirited way, but in the school of actual evil he is like a boys scout to Chaney. It will not be long now before horns begin to sprout from Chaney's head. Lucifer must be licking his chops.

After reading these posts it is apparent that Dems are brainwashed and paranoid. Bush and Cheney will never be brought up on charges get real. I know you need someone to hate and blame for your sad sorry lives. I know you need the government to give you a hand out.

The world became a much safer place the instant Cheney left office. He is delusional and dangerous and belongs committed in an institution for the criminally insane for the rest of his miserable life.

Note to CNN: Stop feeding the Trolls.

Why would CNN put Cheney on a Sunday morning show. It seems to me he is having a hard time letting go of his power and so wants to keep saying over and over that he is right. I didn't watch the interview. I just felt disgusted with CNN for giving him a stage to repeat the same thing. Does CNN realize he was defeated and isn't liked at all by most people? Later on it might work to have him on, but right now are you that desparate?

Why is Gibbs and the Democrats trying to tear this country apart with their remarks? The White House should be trying to unite the country.

I have no problem with the comment, the gloves should come off when dealing with Cheney. He showed no respect for the American people so I say lets return the favor. He orchestrated a symphony of lies and misdirection for 8 years. Dick Cheney is no patriot, he is a complete disgrace to the United States.

You act as if torture was invented under the Bush Administration. Do you think we used torture in WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Dessert Storm, etc? Under Presidents like Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Carter, Clinton, Bush? You don't think they had ways to extract information when George Washington was President. You people hare Bush so much you live with your head in the sand. Grow up, they call it war for reason!!!!!!
