Obama heads to Mexico next month

President Obama will travel to Mexico next month.
President Obama will travel to Mexico next month.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Obama announced Wednesday he will travel to Mexico next month to meet with President Felipe Calderon.

Obama last met with Calderon in January, but this is his first time he will visit the Mexican leader as President of the United States.

The president made the announcement during a session with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus that the White House described as "robust and strategic meeting" on immigration. During the meeting, he told the lawmakers that he will discuss immigration reform with Calderon, and ways to end Mexico's drug-related violence.

This will be Obama's second international trip as president. He traveled to Canada last month.

This makes me hopeful that the two leaders can come up with a plan to combat the rampant drug war in Mexico. Let's make it happen, Mr. President!

The only immigration reform I want to hear about is that he intends to see that our laws are enforced and the increasing flow of humanity sneaking into this country stops! I don't expect much from him as he, along with the other trollers-for-votes in Washington keep cozying up to groups like La Raza (who need to be run out of town on a rail) and the Chamber of Commerce. They preach job creation out of one side of their mouths while encouraging illegals to take available jobs out of the other. They have a lot to prove before they can convince me that they are serious about any sort of reform.

No blanket amnesty. Retroactively roll-back the "anchor baby" provisions. Start deducting the cost of social programs and prison space related to illegal immigrants from the foreign aid that we give to mexico and other central & south american countries.

When American citizens are having trouble finding jobs (for the record, illegals are NOT just doing the jobs that Americans don't want – that is propaganda, pure & simple), going without healthcare, etc., the consistent pandering to illlegal immigrants and their advocates is totally unacceptable!

For the record, I am a liberal democrat. The immigration debate crosses party lines.

At least he's not whacking weeds in Crawford, TX every other weekend. He IS taking care of business that was left undone or bungled up for the last 8 years.

    Just Curious:

I am glad you mentioned how much he as been traveling. We finally have a President that is doing him job. Traveling to meet the people and other world leaders to solve problems. GW Bush just sat in hiding and did everything behind closed door.

Mr. President, please bring back the stimulus dollars that those criminals (aka undocumented workers) that you are allowing to be hired for stimulus construction jobs will be sending to their families in Mexico. We are supposed to be stimulating our economy, not theirs. By the way, why did you get rid of the provision requiring that only LEGAL residents be hired for stimulus projects? It was in the bill, then the Dems stripped it out. Way to go.

Let's hope he will try to collect on the costs we have incurred feeding, housing, educating, imprisoning and deporting illegal Mexican immigrants. Instead he will probably promise them more money and amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Why can't you Obama detractors (and fans for that matter) keep to the topic at hand? This story is about Obama going to Mexico, why waste time and bandwidth with irrelevant comments like "IMPEACH OBAMA" ... get a life, stop wasting our time and learn to be constructive

We need security (troops) at the border and a comprehensive immigration or worker program (but not complete amnesty). We should be helping Mexico to stablize and grow. Having a Democratic, stable safe North American with Free Markets will make us all stronger and safer.

As for those of us in border states, we will appreciate anything done on immigration, border protection, drug smuggling, identity theft, SSN secuity and crime in general. Our interstate highways heading south are a pathway to rampant theft of automobiles & property not to mention the drugs flowing north and cartel related murders. They just found a drug cartel graveyard of at least 11 victims outside Albuquerque a clear indication of a problem!!!

Look, this drug war at our gates to our south is a much more immediate problem right now than immigration reform. Be careful down there President Obama.

@ The Death of America by Obama: I didn't realize traveling to meet with foreign leaders was an impeachable offense.

'I am glad you mentioned how much he as been traveling. We finally have a President that is doing him job. Traveling to meet the people and other world leaders to solve problems. GW Bush just sat in hiding and did everything behind closed door.'

President Obama is hiding in plain sight.

I've been wondering how long it will take before more than a few people will BOO Mr Obama in one of his 'events' .

I will be curious how he reacts when that happens. Might happen sooner than later I think.

    One other question
If it can be proven that President knew about the AIG bonuses before last week (with no doubt he knew) What does that mean to his office and his integrity.

The problem with immigration is not that it's too easy to sneak into America, it's that it's too hard to get here legally. If I'm dirt poor with a newborn and a drug war in my hometown, I really can't afford to wait a year or longer to have my immigration papers reviewed and for my green card to come in. We need to speed up the immigration process for Latin Americans the same way it's sped up for European and Asian immigrants.

For the record, the largest number of illegal immigrants to this country is NOT Mexicans. For the most part, Mexican workers are migrants that cross the border to work, maybe stay a couple of days at a stretch, but usually cross back over the border at night. The largest number of illegal immigrants are students from Asia and India that overstay their visas and get good, high-paying jobs as engineers or technical employees after their graduations. Sounds crazy, but those are the illegal immigrants that are really taking jobs from qualified Americans and nobody seems to care.

Well, when here all potts are boiling over it makes sense to take a trip around the world.
But I don't expect this trip t Mexico to be a good thing for USA, it will probably help Mexico to bring more of its citizen over the border to avoid more social unrest.
