Thompson: I don't want Obama's policies to succeed

Fred Thompson, a former GOP White House hopeful, said Wednesday that he doesn't want some of the president's policies to succeed.

Fred Thompson, a former GOP White House hopeful, said Wednesday that he doesn't want some of the president's policies to succeed.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Count former GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson among the growing chorus of prominent Republicans who want President Obama's policies to fail.

Tuesday evening Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal called pressure to support Obama's policies "political correctness run amok."

Thompson told CNN's John Roberts Wednesday that he agreed with some of his fellow Republicans who have said publicly they do not want the president's policies to be successful.

Watch: Thompson on American Morning

"I want his policies that I believe take us in the wrong direction to fail," Thompson told Roberts on CNN's American Morning.

"If he takes us down the road of tripling our national debt in ten years and making us vulnerable to higher interest rates and higher inflation, and things of that nature, I want all those policies not to succeed," he said.

Thompson, who made the rising cost of entitlement spending a focus of his 2008 presidential run, said he'd be happy to help Obama overhaul those programs.

"If he wants to do that, I will join with him. I'll do everything I can to make him succeed with regard to that because that's the whole ball game in terms of our fiscal future in this country," said the former Tennessee senator.

Thompson criticized Obama's ambitious health care agenda, telling Roberts the president's plans would cost the government more than they would save.

Best way to deal with hate mongers is to ignore them, they feed off of anger.

Prominent Republicans fingered on their calls for Obama to fail?

    Let the backpeddling begin!

That is right Republicans continue to want President Obama to fail and we will become a one party system. The Republicans do not get it and it looks as if they will never get it. So we might as well go to a one party system for now and in 2010-2012 have as many Democrats as we can get, maybe by then the Republican will get it but I doubt that would even get their attention.

If the Republicans want to play a role in the future of this country, they are going to have to do a lot better than this.

Sure the GOP doesn't want Obama's policies to succeed. They want the policies where the rich continue to get richer and to hell with everyone else. Sorry GOP you had your chances and you blew it. The same tired rhetoric will not fix the calamity we are in.

It is amazing to me that these politicians can wish for a President not to succeed. All the damage that Pres Bush did to the country. I never heard any Democrat wish his policies to fail.

These politicians are vindictive and pathetic. I would never vote for them. I think the Republican Party should hold their head in "shame". I want to see them when President Obama's plans succeed. Because they will succeed. The Republican Party and the "do nothing" but attack President Obama will leave with their heads held in shame.

It really hurts me to see this type of comments from the people that are suppose to care about all of us it does not matter who is in the white house republican democrat or whatever, what we need is somebody that cares about our problems and tries to fix them not like Bush that all he did was ruin the economy of this country and now that we are trying to fix his mess everybody wants what we need to fail, where is the love for this country we need to come together to come out of this mess not to be divided...all these republicans that want this administration to fail did not say a word when Bush was ruining this country's economy maybe because they had their bank accounts full of money and nobody could touch them?? who knows!!!

Wanting him to fail means this: We don't want trillions of dollars, that is TRILLIONS of dollars spent because of the enormous rise in inflation ! That is why they say they want him to fail – so things won't get worse!!!

Republicans have killed the public trust by their persistent destructive criticism of the current administration – how do you convince the public that you are genuinely interested in helping the current government succeed than just scoring cheap political points to get back into power. As an independent, I now careless about any comments from a republican! Their motto is – REPUBLICAN PARTY FIRST, AMERICA LAST!

This is silly. The GOP wants our president's polices to fail, and with this wants our country to fail. Shouldn't they want our country to succeed and not fail? They have differences in opinion about how to bring our country out of the mess that they (the republicans) put us in, but with any policy promoted by either the democrats or the republicans, shouldn't we all hope that it succeeds and our country becomes stronger, not weaker? Isn't wishing that anything weakens our country unpatriotic?

I didn't like Bush's policies and I didn't think they would do us any good, but at the same time, I never wished that our economy would falter, that our environment would be failing, and that more of our brave troops would die, I hoped that all of those would have improved and become better.

I would have hoped that those in Germany in the 1930's wanted National Socialism to fail there as well? The same type of reaction by the libs today was what the opposition there got.

If the libs took half the energy they use on hating, lying, and attacking any and all Americans who form their own opions outside of what they are told to think at sites like and used it toward improving the lives of themselves and their families, then they wouldn't need to steal the wealth of the Americans who pay for everything in this country.

The founding fathers would be very upset to see that half the country despises their fellow citizens for working harder and fully going after their own American dream. Certainly the American dream is not stealing, lying, and cheating, so the libs as always are in contradition to what this nation really stands for. They always have the homes of Castro and Chavez for their values and beliefs, however, as lib says, it is unpatriotic to want a guy cut from the same cloth as those two to fail in destroying this nation.

These Republicans who say they want Obama to fail are complete morons. If Obama fails the country sinks. Are you that partisan? The problem is they're all pretty well insulated from the country's problems because they're all independently wealthy. Thompson and Jindal aren't facing foreclosure. This is just a big game to them.

    @ Who Cares:

Please don't take one sentence out of my opinion. Read it in context. And reply with something other than a liberal talking point.

What I am saying is that I think it is extremely dangerous for the democrats to play "double or nothing" with the American public. Surely you must see that?

Where are your detailed counter-proposals, Thompson?
    Obama is DOING something.
The only thing the republicans do is say it won't work but they offer no alternative other than the proven failures of the past 8 years.

I say give Obama 8 years and then let's compare results.

Are you serious? Is this a joke?

Please, will somebody bring up the absolute hypocrisy that is the Republican Party? I seem to remember that during the Bush years, it was "unpatriotic" to criticize the President.

So why all of a sudden is it ok?

Oh yea, I forgot. As long as it's your party, it's ok.

    What a joke...

At this point failure is not an option. I've never heard a group of naysayers wanting policy to fail. For all the people that want him to fail, what do you want? Maybe you are the 1% that received benefit from the non working trickle down theory. Well it did not trickle down to me and if anyone has any idea's it more than what the other side is saying. Eight years to do what you wanted and it has not worked and you still want failure? I dont get it. My prayer is that the President and this country not fail. At anything.

A lot of baseless claims there, but not really surprising coming from you. The one I want to pick on is socialized medicine. I have to laugh when righties complain about medicine becoming socialized. They don't want it socialized because "it just doesn't work!" And our current system does? Get over yourselves.

I thought the people at the Congress were adults.

I thought the adults could act their age.

These are the "learned "folks that ran to be president???(and lost).

What will these type of people come up with next?????

Maybe Thompson wants to join Norris in the charge to have Tx not be a part of the U.S.. will "they" do everything right??? gee....I hope so.

Why don't these Republican losers just shut up?? They don't contribute anything constructive, they just criticize, complain, obstruct and hope for failure. How unamerican is that? Either contribute something positive or shut up. They have a comment about every word the President utters. They can't stand that they are losers and just refuse to go away. The Dems. won the Election. Let them run the Country for the next 4 years and if it goes bad, then elect Repubs in 2012. That's it. Bottom line – but shut up in the meanwhile. You should rename yourselves the Contrarian Party. What a bunch of whiners!!

Thompson is absolute correct. No one wants the nation to fail and no one in their right mind wants the US to be a country that is socialized. Obama cannot be allowed to take away or freedom of choice in schools(voucher) or where our charitable contributions go. Our top 10% give generously but Obama wants to take their money and put it into HIS government programs. Socialism pure and simple. He needs to let the forces of the greatest capitalistic system in the world work. Fix the regulations and leave the market to work itself out.Health care can be fixed with ruining the system. I have seen first hand socialized medicine. Doctors were seeing patients in their basement offices patients who could not be seen for months. It leads to rationed care and delayed care.
